Another fun fact; He drank all the alcohol he could get from his room, Spider-manned his way up the side and onto the deck, then grabbed a bunch of women and Hulk-ed them off the side. He was one of the only survivors, because his blood alcohol content was so high that the harsh environment literally could not kill him.

Without alcohol, the pain kills you. Alcohol suppresses both pain and frostbite. With alcohol, you die when your core body temperature drops too low. Without alcohol, you die long before that.

Alcohol lowers core body temperature, making you feel warmer. Being that drunk probably lowered it significantly. It doesn't change the amount of damage your body sustains from the cold exposure though.

For a bit, yes. Yet, the cold water will cool down that blood/temperature fast and hypothermia will set in. And because of the opened-up vessels- the now cooled blood - it can reach the heart and all other organs way more easily...

My nana was in her mid-70's when she slipped on her icy sidewalk just feet from the door after a night out drinking. In the morning, the neighbor across the street saw her still lying there and got her inside. She was bruised, nothing more.

Its been proven that alcohol does not help in any way to survive the cold and saying one of the "only" survivors makes it sound there was a couple of people. Out of the 2208 people 705 survived. Yes that's still only about a third but way better than saying "one of the only"

If alcohol helped him in any way, it's because it kept him calm. The fact that he wasn't panicking and burning energy but "calmly paddled around until dawn" did more for his survival than a bottle of brandy or two. The guy knew exactly what he needed to do.

There is a story of a submarine that sunk and guy got out survived. He was drunk as a skunk. They think it helped him not panic. No one believed it until the sub was found with the hatch open

In other grim news, I was told this is why many drunk drivers survive their accidents because when they crash they “rag doll” and are less likely to be injured whereas their passengers tense up and brace for impact. Don’t know how true it is but it does make sense.
