Studies suggest that people who engage in new experiences are more likely to be happy. This is because each time we take a leap of faith, we're training our brain to remember the positive rewards associated with it.

The adrenaline rush, the endorphins, the sense of pride—they're all stored in our memory banks.

But being open to the world also means you might run into something that's not entirely up your alley. So Reddit user Best-Palpitation-915 asked everyone on the platform to share what they tried once that they instantly knew wasn't for them. Here are the replies that received the most attention!

45 ‘Anti-Bucket List’ Things People Swear They Will Never Do Again Jogging. I’m in good shape, so it wasn’t solely for health reasons. My dog, who I used to go on long walks with, died mostly of old age. I wasn’t ready to get another dog, so I decided that jogging would be a great hobby. Feeling connected to the neighborhood was a priority for me as I found myself staying at home a lot with no dog to walk.

So I bought decent shoes, did a little research on methods and started jogging just a few blocks a day at first to get into the groove of my new hobby.

Omg I f*****g hated every second of it. There was nothing relaxing or enjoyable about it at all, and I got home every night feeling like I was foolishly making taking a walk punishing rather than fun. About 2 weeks in, I stumbled and fell, scraping my hands up a little. I walked home, put my new shoes in a closet and never jogged again.

I adopted a new dog about a week later.

I can totally relate to that. I even tried it for several years - several times a week. After a while I even joined running courses and ran with groups. Everyone told me that at some point you get to the point where you enjoy jogging. Even after 5 years, I hated every moment I went jogging and couldn't motivate myself to go, even though I got quite "good" at it. It was a huge relief after I decided that I didn't have to torture myself with it and that it wasn’t my kind of sport.

My boss once questioned why I didn't try to push an iPhone 14 onto an old man who came in asking for advice on how to use his flip phone, always loved that one.

45 ‘Anti-Bucket List’ Things People Swear They Will Never Do Again Snow skiing. I fell, a lot. I hurt my a*s. I couldn't figure out how to stand up without falling again. I fell again. I hurt my a*s again. I was freezing. It took me another five minutes to stand up just so I could fall yet again and get even colder. Probably not the best place to start. C++ can be very very hard - as in I can look at some code and struggle to work out what it does - and that is coming from someone with decades of experience of C++ and who wrote a C++ parser in C++ and is rather too well acquainted with the Annotated Reference Manual (C++ Bible)! Oddly my introduction to Object Orientation came through Pascal and an OO version of it that my university was developing. Java is probably a better bet if you want to learn OO.

Python rocks! Once in a project I had to extract some stuff from a vendor, and the only way to do it was via API calls (no reliable "export" button on the report). Took me two weeks to manage to do it by myself, but it was so satisfying that I kept learning and two weeks after that I was already using the multiprocessing module to parallelize the extraction! tl;dr: the learning curve is steep, because you need to know some stuff before any of it is even usable, but once you figure it out, there are no limits!

Imho it's a bit of a perspective question. I can't say I know any programming language to full extend, but I always know what I need to do (logic) and basic principles of any language are very similar: define variables/parameters, do what you need to do and finally provide result in some form. In that way it does not really matter which language you use - you choose one best suited for the environment/goal and look up syntax when needed. In this way I had robotics related projects done with c/c++, API's done with java, web fronts done with php or .net and huge number of scripts utilizing python.

Teaching middle school. I taught high school for 19 years, moved states and had to take a middle school position for a year.

I instantly realized it was not for me. I thought, "they're just a few grades lower, how different can they be?"

Completely opposite, exactly. I dragged myself into that school so exhausted and irritable every day. I quickly realized that one middle schooler with bad behavior = 5 high schoolers with bad behavior. My humor went right over their heads. The misbehavior itself was a type of misbehavior I'm not used to. Also, high schoolers sleep. Middle schoolers scream. High schoolers will sometimes be apathetic. Middle schoolers throw things. High schoolers are developing the capacity to think before they speak. Middle schoolers shout whatever comes to mind. High schoolers bully each other online. Middle schoolers bully each other in person in front of a teacher's face.

I have never gotten so many rude comments as I did when I taught middle school.

Psychedelics. I was with a bunch of friends when we tried them. Everyone else was enjoying it and losing their minds, while I literally felt nothing. Ended up leaving early and driving home since I literally felt completely sober.

Tried some others another time, and same thing happened. I figured I must be immune to hallucinations or something and never tried them again.

Pilates. It felt like torture and I didn't understand why people did it.

The violin. I practiced by force and at my mother's request for 3 months, I never liked the results.

What's the thing I saw online somewhere, if I wanted to disappoint two people at the same time I'd invite my parents to dinner. Lol

LARPing. I'm more comfortable sitting at a table and rolling dice than being at some park with a bunch of dressed up people.

All my life I thought to be bisexual or pansexual. But I am not. I'm straight as f**k and don't know how to change the pansexual flag from my account lol.

But who doesn't like getting stabbed? Did you at least try it more than once to be sure?

Dark Souls and any soul-like game, for that matter. No thanks.

That's a perfectly fine take to have. I suck at the Dark Souls series, but I do enjoy the Nioh series, mostly because Nioh is a bit easier.

Matcha is an acquired taste I think, I hated it the first time but then tried again and enjoyed it! Mint is my absolutely-number-one-hands-down favourite flavour and it only improves the flavour of chocolate
