Whether you live in your first apartment or dwell in the same house for years, decorating interiors is quite a task. While some see it as a fun and fulfilling challenge, most people instantly feel overwhelmed by myriads of complex and, more importantly, expensive choices when trying to make their humble abode feel more put together.
Of course, there’s no arguing about taste being a matter of preference, and it’s great to make your home feel like you. But interior design is a tricky game to play, and certain solutions may not turn out as expected. So recently, TikToker Krishnan Rajaratnam, who goes by the handle @interiorbykrish, revealed several decor mistakes that might make your home look cheap, and people online are divided.
From crushed diamond mirror furniture to the "Live Laugh Love" type of decorations, we’ve gathered some common faux pas homeowners might want to steer clear of. So take out your notebooks, grab your pens, and decide for yourself whether you agree with them. Also, read on for our in-depth interview filled with handy tips from an award-winning interior designer Linda Merrill. Then if you’re interested in even more questionable home decor trends, then check out Bored Panda's previous piece about it right here.

The task of furnishing and decorating your home can be a daunting experience, especially when you realize how expensive it is. We reached out to an expert in the field, an award-winning New England-based interior designer Linda Merrill. She is a renowned author of the Surroundings blog filled with clever and creative solutions to help anyone lost in the design world to come up with stunning decors.
According to Merrill, there are plenty of simple tweaks for low and even no-cost decorating that are both beautiful and functional. For example, when searching for affordable furniture and accessories, the interior designer suggested looking at second-hand, consignment stores, or Facebook Marketplace — places filled with great pieces waiting for a new home.
"This is especially true if you live in an area with a mix of high-end homes and towns where more affluent people are redecorating more frequently and are more likely to be getting rid of better-quality furnishings," Merrill told Bored Panda. "Don’t be afraid of vintage pieces — they are better quality than low-cost items made today and with a little cleaning, painting or reupholstering, you could have a like new item for a fraction of the cost."
Another inexpensive solution that can make your pad look and feel more put together is paint. "[It] is relatively cheap for the impact it offers and while it requires labor, touching up tired paint on trim and walls, or repainting entirely will freshen up a space significantly." If you’re in a rental, Merrill has recently written a blog post with some ideas on decorating that will work as well, so be sure to take a peek right here.
Merrill pointed out that fabric is a reasonably-priced decorating option that can instantly make a difference. "I’m a big fan of the magic of fabric. It helps to be able to sew, of course. But when I was young and on a no-money budget, I would use sheets to make curtains, bedding, shower curtains and pillows. They come in such pretty patterns and are available at all price points," the interior designer said.
Of course, there are also several no-cost solutions that can make your residence look more put together. "For no money, spend time re-organizing, decluttering and simply re-imagining how you’re using your rooms and can you move things around. We hang a picture and then stop looking at it. Moving things around will make them feel like new (or at least seen!)."
The interior designer shared a few common decorating mistakes to have in mind when updating your space. First, she explained that old furniture that looks worn out should be repaired to give it a fresh look. "Rachel Ashwell marketed the Shabby Chic aesthetic, which is a feminine take on aged and used-looking items. It’s a gift to be able to turn chippy furniture and frayed fabric edges into a chic (and also expensive) brand. But in reality, nothing looks cheaper than chipped, tired-looking pieces," Merrill explained, adding that a bit of repairing and touching up will always up the whole look.
Another mistake some homeowners make is bad lighting. "Regardless of how expensive, or inexpensive, an interior is, if the lighting is terrible, it will look terrible," she told us. "Overhead bright lights are reminiscent of being under investigation. Hard on the eyes and makes you look terrible. Don’t rely on just a single ceiling light wherever possible." Merrill suggested avoiding this by simply adding a few table and floor lamps is key. "Also, dimmers are your best friend when it comes to lighting. Switching out standard switches for dimmers is a relatively easy DIY project that will give all your rooms flexibility in the lighting."
Are there really people who, when visiting a house, stick their head in the shower and then pass judgement on it?
Oh no. People can see that I wash my clothes. The horror of having to put the machine where you have space for it.
When it comes to timeless design choices that can instantly spruce up your home and require little effort, Merrill said that curb appeal is definitely something to consider. "Adding pretty pots of flowers, a fun doormat and a freshly painted front door will up the look overall. The author Edith Wharton said in her book The Decoration of Houses (pub. 1897) that the transition from outside to inside should be as smooth and easy as possible." According to the interior designer, the outside should set up what’s happening on the inside. "If the outside looks tired and lackluster, the inside will feel the same."
Not true. Take a look at some of the most traditional British houses.
Pale colored wall all the way. Bright.. nonono
Load More Replies...Oh. f**k off. I like bright colors. Not everything should be soul-sucking beige.
I'm beginning to get an idea of what this so-called Interior Designer thinks would be an acceptable home. Cold, sterile, plain.
HGTV dreams. Boring. I can't be me in grey and beige.
Load More Replies...My most beautiful flat had every room in a different bright color. My landlord loved it too!
Exactly! For the love of God, if it makes you happy in your home, who cares what other people think about my house. I'm out.
Load More Replies...It's not the bright color Wich make this room look cheap but the cheap furniture !
Pretty sure the sloped mattress and folding chair say a lot more about this room than the yellow walls do.
I didn't even notice the mattress 😂 I'd fall out every night!
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure it's the busted poorly-made-up dorm bed with random mismatched sheets and the leftover school office desk and folding chair, but okay we can blame yellow
Depends on the room....im guessing the person who wrote this lives in a solid white, plain, blech house... hows that?!
I will take bright color over clinical, boring white any day. Rich people seem to like white and gray, they can have it.
When we first moved into a rental house together, the landlord paid for whatever paint we wished, as long as we did the repainting work. We colored the bathroom bright yellow, the office bright orange, the kitchen bright red, and the bedroom mint green. Mental stimulation FTW!!!
My living room is currently being painted sage green, the kitchen will be '80's blue and white, bedroom purple. I think I want the bath to be pale pink with black accents, and the studio will look like a Jackson Pollock painting.
Load More Replies...Every room in my house is a different bright color. I love it and don’t care what others think
That's just bull! Kidsrooms can have bright colors without being tacky. Certain houses NEED a bright color on their walls to make it sparkle. What we do with our houses isn't what others should do with their houses. I can like or dislike something in someones house, but hate or love the same item in my house. No judgement on what others do. It's not my house!
Pah! I love bright walls!! I have the brightest walls you ever did see in my house!
If you go into some of the antebellum homes in the south the walls are colored bright and are beautiful
Today's home section of the Washington Post has an article on using bright and bold colors in various rooms, on walls and furniture. It is fashionable, and has been for decades. Even Mount Vernon's original wall colors are bright, not some subdued modern idea of what looks upscale.
Absolutely not true. Color is beautiful and saves us from the boredom of the dreaded off white walls (shudder).
Neutral colours are so boring. I want to feel at home not in an institution.
The U.S. trend for "fancy" interiors is bland boring very neutral tones, which is okay sometimes, but again wall color depends on the decor, furniture and color scheme of the room and rest of house, sometimes could just do an accent wall maybe with bolder color choice
Its everything in the room not the colour - just have a double bed with headboard and lift for space underneath make the wardrobe look built in and the wall colour will have no effect. Essentially the room is sooo bad your eye sees only the walls..look at that charity shop chair, desk and bed - no way
A brightly painted wall can brighten a dull room. People paint their interior walls to suit themselves. When you buy that house, you just paint over in the colour you prefer.
i’d rather my house look”cheap” then have all my walls be boring beige
IT's not the colour looking cheap here - it is the furniture etc. Bright colour rock! ( Currently in a new house with magnolia everywhere - just hate it!)
Yeah let's paint all the walls dark and cry daily like this BP author...
It's fine if the rest of the room goes with the paint. You can use bright colors and it can look really classy and nice.
I’m going through this list and realizing that looking wealthy according to this author means drab, dull, and pompous. No cheer aloud and certainly nothing practical.
Is the person who made this list from the shadow realm? No patterns. No colors. No shiny things. No personality. Their house must be drab and devoid of all life.
Not that it matters, since there's no reason anyone else's opinion of what looks "cheap" or otherwise should influence our personal style, but I would actually think the opposite. Pale neutral walls are used by landlords and house sellers because they're fairly inoffensive: most will neither love them nor hate them, and if the next occupants want to repaint in their own colour scheme, they won't need extra coats to cover. Bright colours suggest to me that the householder has probably spent time and money making the decor their own, instead of the cheaper/ easier option of living with the landlord's choice of magnolia. Of course if you do prefer magnolia walls that's also fine - you do you.
This really is a pointless list. No bright colored walls? perhaps I should everything blood red.
I disagree with most of this besides the crushed diamond desk and the velvet anything. But that's my taste and velvet I cannot touch it gives me Goosebumps. The room is nice but purposely made to look like poo with that folding chair from the designers last NA meeting, no artwork to pull the messy made bed together. This is BS
Disagree. My front entrance is pretty close to this yellow (Surfboard Yellow) and it really brightens up the way in. My kitchen is inspired by a 1950s diner, in red and white (No More Drama) in honor of my mom who thought a red kitchen would look sharp. When the painter saw the color he exclaimed, "Oh thank god you picked a color, and not beige or gray!" Last year's bathroom reno has wallpaper of a waterfall in the forest, with accents in dark green and a blue sky with clouds paited on the ceiling. The basement main room is pink and tan with a dark pink epoxy floor. You got all these colors to pick from on the color chart, why not make your surroundings interesting?!
Oh for Pete's sake. Get over yourself. Now what the hell is up with that... "bed"?
Lol, my office is painted orange - "obstinate orange" from sherwin williams, to be precise
I don't like coloured walls personally but my home is not plain bland or sterile looking even though it is whitewashed. I brighten my rooms with coloured curtains rugs cushion covers and accessories. I did this because a) It's a very small house and the white opened it up. b) When I want a change I can easily switch up the soft furnishings and accessories. Works for me. Each to their own I say :)
Then I rather be "cheap" with colorful walls than the boring typical scandinavian clean white walls.
Personally, I think that the currently preferred blah color palette is boring and lifeless. I would not paint a room this color, but I sure would not paint it 'clay'.
That’s not about picking bright colours. It’s about understanding the right colour to go with everything else.
Of course, one of the most important aspects of making your house look stunning is rather simple — declutter. A messy home takes away from the charming space that might be lurking below, Merrill said. "Decluttering and having storage systems in place (such as baskets) to contain toys, clothes, etc., will turn a space around immediately. In the same vein, collections of small items (collectible teapots or action figures) are not elegant unless housed and displayed with intention," she mentioned.
Again, depends on the pattern, I know people with scrolly brocade carpet and it looks luxe in a carved-wood living room.
If you’re in the middle of redecorating or feel overwhelmed by the daunting process of designing your own home, Merrill advised you to have patience and be flexible. "Everything is more expensive and is taking longer these days. Long-lead times are annoying but unavoidable much of the time. If you love something, it’s worth the wait. If it’s not worth the wait, you might not love it as much as you think."
Huh? Aren't shelves for putting things on? Otherwise, what's the point of having them? Is this shelf 'cluttered'?
Dunno where you live mate, but i've frankly never been to a country where it seemed they hid them. These days interesting designs for your radiators are actually all the rage?!
Moreover, when it comes to what you need vs. what you want, she explained that our needs must come first. "For example, if you need a decent sofa and want it to be leather (which can be very, very expensive), this is the time to consider the second-hand furniture route. Genuine aniline leather will last for years. Bonded leather, which comes on cheaper pieces, will not last very long because all it is are micro-thin slices of the leather scraps applied to a paper foundation."
"Try to buy the best quality you can on seating and items that will be well-used. Tables get less physical use (usually no one is sitting on them, moving them a lot, etc.) so cheaper stylish versions can be found that will work quite well," she added.
No matter your decorating budget, you want to create an aesthetically pleasing space that speaks directly to you. "It’s fun to follow trends, but be sure you really actually like it in the first place. Just because everyone is doing gray doesn't mean you will like it. Don’t spend money on things you don’t love." And, most importantly, enjoy the process but take it seriously. "Whether you’re rich or poor, you don’t want to waste money or time," Merrill concluded.
There's a place for thick rugs, there's a place for thin rugs. I won't put a thick rug in our nursery, because it's harder to clean and our twins have had diaper accidents sometimes. Similar with the hallways, why would you put a thick rug where people walk in with their shoes on? In our living room, go ahead, I'll take a rug I could lose my keys in.
...are a necessity if you don't want them to touch radiators under the window.
Awful, pretentious list. Let people decorate their homes the way they like without being shamed.
Panda: This post was a massive fail. Whoever posted this stuff really didn't know what they were talking about.
This Tiktoker is a 20 year old interior design student from England who thinks anything that betrays a lack of servants or space looks cheap. They probably grew up posh and clueless.
Basically they want minimalism and anything else is tacky and cheap
Load More Replies...This is the most pointless and ridiculous article ever. Is this article written just as a click bait so people will read and rage?
@gk sutto what is your problem people are commenting perfectly accurate things that only person that looks insecure and offended is you.
Load More Replies...I disagree with 95% of what's on that list, so I'll just leave it be...
And what is the point of posting this list? To shame? The less that kind of pretentious people who makes such lists, the better everybody would be..BP:better no content, than that kind of content.
So this is a list based on the writers personal tastes; we all have our own taste and that's ok. What's not ok is to criticise people for not sharing your taste and declaring that anything other than your personal taste looks cheap. The cheap v expensive argument is weird to me... who gets to decide what looks expensive and why is "looking expensive " something to aspire to? My taste is pretty maximalist, and my home decorated in keeping with its Victorian heritage. We love it but my mum hates it; she paints everything white or cream and hates "clutter" as she is very minimalist. Our tastes are very different but do either look cheap, I don't know and I don't care. Maybe we should stop judging people and let them like what they like.
@gk sutto I don't even know why you're defending the dumb post.
Load More Replies...This is an awful list. Shame on the compiler - pretentious upstart.
The next thing will problaply be that i can't have my lego-models everywhere... 😂😂😂
You Can have your Lego-model anywhere you want. Everyone that say otherwise doesn't deserve the time you would waste listening/ reading their poor opinion
Load More Replies...Note to self: never let this person anywhere near my house. What a pretentious twat they are, bet their home is one of those awful McMansions with all the latest trends in place and an interior decorator who comes in regularly to update it. Meanwhile back in reality I have mismatched furniture, bright colours, random artwork, an exposed washing machine (gasp) and all the other "mistakes" this idiot thinks I am making.
Based on the downvotes, is Ieva going to be benched for a while now? 🤣🤣
Hahaha well looks like my home ticks nearly all these boxes and you what? I don't care. If people don't like then they don't have to come back
Yeah i'm joining the choir, this list is awful. Guess i'm cheap! Better than compulsively and fearfully living in some sterile, all white/pastel nightmare because "style" and "what will people think". I'm going to go and sleep incredibly soundly on my patterned duvet covers.
Do try not to wrinkle the bed linen while you sleep though, because apparently that's 'cheap' too. Are we supposed to get the iron out every day?
Load More Replies...Wow, whoever came up with this list really needs a good slap upside the head. If someone came to my place, and complained about all the things that made it look "cheap" which fits MANY of the postings above, I would tell them to get their behinds over to one of the expensive places with decor that fits THEIR idea of "tasteful" and load up a truck, and redecorate my place. LOL, the cricket chorus would be deafening, I think!
Whoever wrote this post did it just to write a post. Apparently everything looks cheap. Senseless list. Flat cushions? Radiators? Small artwork? Huh?! What are you going on about?!
Wow, what a snobby, pretentious and judgemental post this is. Way to go BP, you've reached a new low.
This is a objectively horrible list. Live and let live. Whoever made this must be very insecure and devoid of personal style…
Well, there's 5 minutes of my life I'll never get back, BUT I will sit here in my randomly decorated home, surrounded by a happy mess of color as well as objects and pictures that mean something to me.
This list is just an excuse for someone to be snobby and judgemental while passing it off as design advice!
Honestly guys, go onto this idiots tiktok homepage (not on tiktok so can't go that far in) She has made a few videos all about things looking cheap. It's tacky and pretentious, and she evidently feels the need to appear somehow superior. Read the room before putting c**p like this up, Ieva!
Perfect people don't have to read the room. The room just has to know it's place. Right???
Load More Replies..."Not to my liking" isn't the same as cheap. C'mon 🙄 Or small spaces, those aren't the same as cheap either!
What a condescending, entitled, BS list. This should have been called, "Things That I, Ieva Gailiūtė, Think Make Your House Look Cheap." This was only the author's personal taste, and frankly? Most of it was stuff a lot of us have zero control over. Money makes all of this easy to address, eh? Yuck.
I think it's originally from a british tiktoker. Ieva is just a redacor for bp who compiled it into an article.
Load More Replies...Is this post meant to be sarcasm or do the publisher think it's relevant to tell someones ridiculous opinion about normal life and decorating? I do not appreciate this kind of posting. Do not make fun of peoples taste of decorating or tell them they are trash when they live their life as they want to live.
Yes, it's just below the last entry, before comments. Reading other posts, it may be blocked from further downvotes -200 as I write, but don't know as I downvoted earlier.
Load More Replies...I don’t even know why I clicked on this since I knew it was going to make me angry. Stupid me.
The OP whines over INTERIOR fittings. So what? Only residents and any visitors (friendly or otherwise) will be exposed to triviality. More important IMHO is what a place looks like OUTSIDE. We want rough passersby to decide our plain home is not worth burglarizing.
So, basically, most of that was saying "don't be POOR" and don't let your HOME look like an actual HOME!
What a stupid list. My house my deco. Never had anyone give comment on my Ikea furniture. At least I am not in dept Just to look posh for the others
This entire article escalated from "things that look tacky and cheap as a matter of opinion" to "being poor" awfully fast.
Wow. So, don't like... live in your house. Or buy stuff you can afford. Or have children. Sheesh.
Kinda agreed for the first couple of things and then they started listing literally everything middle class apartments have. We're not CHEAP, we just trying to make it as comfortable as we can with what's affordable Ieva
Understatement, but exactly how I felt reading it. You English too? 😁
Load More Replies...This is the stupidest list I have ever seen! Don't waste your time with this one.
-173 people disliked this. So happy to see that. What a pretentious list!
I think whoever created this list just hates everything and is a terribly unhappy person.
Is BP leaving this "article" up just to see how many down votes it gets?
I started this thinking, cool, let me get some good ideas of what to avoid. Not even halfway through I was like, ummm....what in the name....this can't be right. Most of these are just normal things. What is their definition of "cheap"? Should I get one of those pretentious chairs made with pipes and no cushions to look "cool" instead of a comfy chair? C'mon now. I will clutter my bookshelves and it'll be great!
So, literally anything and everything, most of which I can't control since I rent. Cool, thanks for the info.
What makes your home look cheap - expressing any of your personality in it!
I have a feeling the author of this list doesn't get invited to other people's houses very often.
I thought this was going to be like the TV programme we used to have in the UK called House Doctor, where people that had had a house on the market for ages without getting an offer got help sorting it out so that potential buyers would walk in and feel like "ooh, yes, this is nice, I can see us living here". Instead it told us things like "having massive thick rugs makes your house look like you have more money than if you have smaller, thinner rugs" - well, d'uh.
This article is awful. Period. To interior designers, go away. This industry causes MASSIVE waste. Don't like the inside of my home, don't come over. Don't like the stuff in my home, because it doesn't match....you go buy the c**p that matches and makes no sense practically. Please stop falling for these greedy, gotta make you think you're doing it wrong business practices. Your home is fine. If you have someone in your life who judges your home, lock the damn door. They aren't there for you. They are there to make themselves seem more important. Boredpanda....knock this off
Who made these decisions??? I agree with like one- the others are just ridiculous.
This is probably the worst article i have come across on here. It started well but then deemed almost everything as cheap and nasty. Its seems the people who pass this judgement dont live in the real world
There's a few things on this list I don't like. However, this list as a whole is bad in so many ways.
Oh I am soooo glad I'm as pissed off as everyone else!! So it's apparently a massive NO to window blinds, small rugs, exposed radiators, bright colours and god knows what else, all of which are present in my extremely nice Victorian family home. If it suits the room then it's just fine. My master bedroom has crushed velvet and looks like an expensive hotel suite. This person is a complete k**b.
This is BS.... We decorate our home the way we like, I don't give a dam about other peoples opinion :-)
Some people seem to have way too much time on their hands to complain about most of these.
Dear BP, please do not allow stuck-up, pretentious and arrogant snobs like Ieva Gailiūtė ( author of this 'article' ) to do any more writing for you.
What an awful list. It seems like the people who made this list, just threw random things on it.
Whoever made this list obviously lacks any form of joy in their life and this is a cry for help. Someone please give them a hug.
We'll, that was a waste. To much of that was ridiculous and the rest was clearly just someone's opinion. I mean, if you're selling your house and you didn't for the dishes, you have bigger problems. If you're not selling your house, who cares if it makes it "look cheap." This is probably the "cheapest" post I've seen on bp.
This is the problem when you say "Anyone can write on Bored panda". Sometimes you get good content, sometimes is trash like this list.
Bahaha made me think the original poster is a trash panda but then that's insulting to actual raccoons.
Load More Replies...Cheap versus entitled. This post shows a lot of privilege and outdated thinking.
This whole article was unnecessary. A list of judgemental horseshite that is nobody's business except for the homeowner who decided to decorate how they chose. Stay in your lane, Ieva and Kotryna, preferably one that is far away from others.
Most of the things on this list are completely opinion. Allot of what was mentioned has varying degrees of quality that can absolutely make your home look cheap. Fake flowers and plants for instance, I've seen some that could fool just about anyone. I've also seen ones that wouldn't even be appropriate on the grave of your most hated relative. Blinds, window shades, and curtains are another area that if you buy quality and not cheap out it can make a world of difference on the way your home looks. But at the end of the day 90% of it is opinion and this is a story for clicks and conversation and nothing more.
Anybody smell that??? Anybody? Smells like some bullsh*t to me. Somebody needs to pay their own mortgage and go sit the hell down somewhere....
You all are so sensitive to critics, I don't even have words. Nobody forbids you to decorate your home as you like. Look at some decor books or videos, you will see the same advices.
genuinely the worst "article" i've read on this website.
Is this post supposed to be satirical? Because it is incredibly stupid otherwise.
I hated this post. I love my house "outdated" because I love thrifting and avoid buying new stuff because I try to do my best for the planet.
This is from a designers stand point and people that hire designers usually are loaded beyond comprehension! The rich people we work for nothing is out of place and even laundry room has been designed by a professional even tho only the house keeper uses that room ! They have ground keepers and housekeepers! And if something breaks the house manager calls a repair man if the groundskeeper can’t handle it! They have landscapers and gardeners! We are garden designers and sometimes there are more than one garden design company’s at a house. Then lots of these houses we may visit 2 or 3 times a week all year long and the people might only live there 3 months of the year! There’s more of these people around than we realize !
I only work the garden design company I was blown away by the frivolous of it all when I 1st started now unfortunately I’m numb to even the fanciest house ! Which is kind of sad because it use to be so fun seeing how the other 1% live
Load More Replies...Hate this one. People have lives with constraints and that’s not shameful. This list is like “if you are poor, your house sucks”
I like half of this stuff. If that makes me cheap then great. I'm trying to live in it not f*****g sell it!!!
I have to say that this was really unfair. Everyone's families and lives are different, but I would never tell a parent that having their kids work on their walls makes their home look "cheap"! It's not like it's permanent, and children are only small for so long. They have every right to treasure those fleeting moments!
Makes me feel that living like a rich is quite uncomfortable and sad... Guess i would be better off with my cozy poor room.
This is the worst BP article ever. A cheap sign of reaching too far for content.
This list is by the beige-brigade. Oh no patterns and colors, EGAD!
i call bs on every single point on this list. who wrote that? i really want to know how the home of the author looks like....
What a waste of good reading time. Some pretentious assh*le(s) decided these things were cheap and decided to publish an article based on their OPINIONS? Next time try using an actual survey.
This whole post is quite condescending BP. At least half of the people who reads your blog are people on low budget and can not afford the fancy stuff you are promoting. Do you really want to insult your regular viewers? Who do you think reads your blog? Kardashians?
Who TF thought this was a good idea.... The idea of this list is terrible and gets worse when you look at each item... What a judgey bunch of bs
This was the first list on Panda I'm upset about. It's all about a person's happiness, comfort & personality, and these days, probably finances too! Big thumbs down.
I think everybody should feel free to decorate their house exactly as they like, even if the rest of the world thinks it looks ridiculous. There are too many boring houses out there because owners are scared of what other people might think.
What a tone-deaf, pretentious list. Whoever vomited this up must be an absolute drag.
Essentially this crappy list can be boiled down to don't have anything practical in your home or use the space that way. Also, definitely don't have kids. Then spend lots of money making your house look like a white tomb where no one lives except to stare at your original posh paintings. Disappointing article- how did clean and declutter make it into don't look poor? Like we don't know that messy isn't aesthetically pleasing?
Really, it just sounds like renting is considered cheap to the author
OMG, this was so full of s**t, I guess the writer doesn't have an editor. Or maybe they just make too much money to care about how their list shows just how entitled they are.
When someone else begins paying my bills in my house, I might.... nope, I STILL won't gaf about their opinion.
I definitely don't need an pretentious elitist telling me what I 'have' to like in my home.
Is this my mother? My husband has movie posters in a few spots in the house. Framed, not just pinned to the wall. They're movies we both like. My mother absolutely hates them. It's our house. Die angry.
I got halfway through and just scrolled to the bottom just to see what people were saying. To me, this an anti fun list with a dose of boring biege house slapped to it. No thanks. Apologies to people who like biege, it's not you, it's me, I'm not a huge fan of the color.
According to this article, our home is "cheap". We have brightly, hand painted walls, "outdated" lighting, "bulky" sofas and some other things in this list. Well, consider this, the look of and interior design of modern homes, which this article is insinuating to be "high class", is like a sterile, surgical, operating room - cold white or grey, bare - unpainted, and undecorated - walls, sparse furniture in the shape of four straight sticks with a flat, cold, undecorated top, no rugs, and handing upside down balloons for lighting. If this is "high class", I'd rather be in my "cheap" home!
Have in your home what works for you, down to personal taste. Also depends if you got a modern house build or an old fashioned one..not everything suits every home...not ev one can keep changing decor etc if they're on a budget
Rude AF. Not everyone can afford to update their homes, especially considering everyone has to spend more on rent, food, and gas right now. Who writes stuff like this and thinks it's smart and people want to read it? I'm embarrassed for you.
This list, with the exception of the "Diamond" furniture, is total bs. There, I said it.
This is bored panda and anyone can write here. This writer certainly is either super pretentious, a newbie to the decorating world, or just plain trolling us. I don't agree with anything they said. If that makes me cheap, so be it. It's funny though how much the writer talks about the home owner using "what speaks to them." That contradicts their judgements. Many of these things are just practical and can be perfectly fine or worked with/around.
It does my heart good to see the top comment on almost every list item flatly disagreeing with the author.
And the LED light strip are supposed to be like that I have some in my room they go around the perimeter of my room and I use them as a night light and they're actually really cool. They change colors (if you want) and they can be set up so they react to sound and you can choose from a bunch of different modes (as the instructions call them) to decide what pattern you want them to go in.
New title: "Things that make a house look like people actually live in it and have a budget where they can't have everything they want instantly"
Tldr version. Do you live in a mansion/castle made of solid gold? No? Then your house looks cheap... Smh
Just agreed with pattern carpets and fake plants. The others are just a matter of how and where you put it.
This is one of the worst lists in the entire history of lists and they're totally serious about it too.
This is just made by an enablist. Some of these things are for convenience, some are safety things, quite a few are about taste. None of which tell me that the person with these is cheap, but all of these do tell me something about the personality of whoever created this list.
Or the makers of this post is a bully? Or generation x spoiled rich kid?
Rich fashion people telling us how they want us to decorate our homes despite the fact that they will never set foot in them. They forget we live in our homes they do not. So we will decorate how we see fit. This person would hate my otter themed bedroom and bathroom, but I am happy with it and don't care what anyone else thinks. I laugh at people who want to criticize my decor.
Anyone who pokes their nose into my bedroom to critique my creased bedlinen will not be visiting again. As for thin/thick rugs. Thicker ones just make it easier for us unsteady people to trip over. Exposed radiators? Snob!
They forgot to add kids and pets and people and food to the list 🙄....
I had to stop myself from commenting on each and every item on this list. This was definitely made by someone who grew up with that 'minimalism' trend and had money to have all name brand possessions. Some of these things can't be helped, like the popcorn finish or exposed radiators. Like, really? I think the only thing I agree with one this list is the wall stickers one. But that is just more so the content of the sticker, like the dreaded live laugh love decor.
Personally (as these are a list of opinions), minimalist/metal/wood/empty rooms look terrible, cold, and uninviting, as if the owner has no friends.
Hahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha hahahaha Please delete this article 😂😭
"Anyone can write On Bored Panda" Yup, and it shows! This person is just pretentious and vapid. A degree in Swedish studies doesn't make you an interior decorator, nor a fashion writer... wow
I don’t say this often, but this was the dumbest list I’ve read in a while.
Everything is a matter of opinion. There really is no such thing as 'bad taste' just different taste. Imagine how boring the world would be if everyone's taste was the same.
Everyone’s pissed at everyone. Go watch a puppy YouTube and stop complaining. You’re the one who took the time to read this list
GTFO! Let people decorate how they like and stop being so f*****g rude! Yours, someone who ticks several of these boxes :D
I think this person must live in an all white room with little to not furniture.... Probably with padded walls.
This was tagged as interior design when every single entry is interior decorating. Why people can't distinguish between the two is beyond me.
Well my house is cheap...the upside is based on this list, so is almost everyone else's house too.
The entire blog is extremely pleasant discovered some well done. best leather sofa set
No need for /j because we all know this list is a massive joke 😩 (really though BP what were you thinking?)
This list was one of the worst I have ever seen. 99% of the things they listed don't have a thing to do with making a home look cheap. It is all subjective.
Probably from a realtor. They think you should strip your home of all the above, or it won't appeal.
So basically everything you find in a standard middle-class home is ugly. Thanks, TikTok influencer - whoever you are. I'm sure you are the million dollar baby you pretend to be in your posts.
This was a very disjointed compilation. It started out ok, then just disintegrated into nonsense. Here are some REAL tips for people that actually live in homes: Avoid particle board. It's better to buy gently used real, solid wood than new particle board. Interior decorating is much like fashion, there are trends but also classic, more timeless investments. These tend to be real, natural materials that are built to last. DO hang your kids or grandkids artwork if you want. Make a space you find cozy and can recharge in. Get some air purifying plants. Take time to plan your sanctuary spaces. Try to limit clutter in your bedroom. Look into fung-shei, it tends to create a nice, practical aesthetic. Marie Kondo has some great advice too.
what "hooman" made this list?! i can agree with one or two things that are... not that great for living, but still not that bad, but for jsus fck....
I thought it was going to have blankets thumbtacked to a window, using the walls as notepads, hanging laundry from 6 months ago, filthy toilets and dead cars in the front yard. Stuff like that. But, no. Wow, really scraping the bottom of the barrel for content, huh? Who wrote this? Someone working for a furniture/bedding/home improvement group trying to drum up business in THIS economy? What's cheap is judging nice things and things people can't control. But the tacky rich kids who don't know their noses from their elbows, look down on mid and lower class renters anyway. Not bored enough panda, just disgusted.
This might be the most stupid list ever on bored panda. Well my house looks cheap because it is cheap. But it’s comfy
This should be titled "Stuff some stuck up c*nt doesn't like". Like, you're really gonna go after kid's artwork? What horrible human would make that comment???
Really stupid list....and l don't agree with any of them. Its just a matter of personal taste!
I would be lucky to have a house, and dont give a s**t about some tick-f*****s opinion.
As i read this all I could think of was "REALLY? AND ON BP????? The nerve, I can't even...!!!"
One word (or is it two?): TikTok. I don't use it & this is another good reason not to. Full of pretentious, snobby, "Gimme attention 'cuz my parents don't love me!", hypercritical jackasses. No, thank you!
If your house does not look like a designer furniture catalog, it looks cheap. And don't even dare to decorate it the way you like. 😒 Well, I don't know about you, but I honestly don't give a s**t if people think my home looks "cheap"... they don't live there.
I'm beginning to think an empty box is the only way to avoid being on this list.
Your house must be EMPTY and have NO LIFE and NO COMFORT. It's cheap to have things and life and comfort! You are only allowed to exist within a pod composed of metal! Like lol this list is such trash.
So we shouldn't put canvas art, small picture, or our kids artwork on the wall so....what are we supposed to put on the wall? Stupid list. Decorate your home any way that makes it feel like home.
Sounds to me like this account thinks the sterile morgue/dentist/hospital look ala The Kardashians is what looks rich. It doesn't look rich, expensive, or tasteful, it looks cold, sterile and without personality.
Unless you’re a qualified, paid house decorator, GTFO with your kn0b head opinions. Ye gods BP, really scraping the bottom of the barrel now..
This list is just silly. Most of it is pretentious opinions, not anything else. And I guess people with style live in mansions, and those are the only 1 percent that counts. Right? Right??
Someone tell the lithuanian pretentious C U N T to shove Ikea and "oh I am so swedish and superior because I speak swedish now" up her a s s . F u c k it, I will say it myself: F u c k you lithuanian pretentoius D O U C H E. You will always be like West Virginia's Clarice Starling thinking she was better because she learned different from her origins.
