If you ever feel like you’ve seen it all, done it all, bought it all, then you clearly haven’t spent enough time on the internet. We might spend way more time online than your average Panda, but even we get surprised by some of the things we stumble across. To say that these make us do a double-take would be a disservice: there’s a third take and a fourth one, too.

One page that really caught our attention is the ‘Yup That Exists’ project, found on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and elsewhere. ‘Yup That Exists’ documents all the bizarre and unusual things that “you never knew existed.” From strange facts and products that will raise more eyebrows than we can count to wonderfully weird things that you’ll want to share with your friends.

Scroll down for the best of ‘Yup That Exists,’ and upvote your fave pics, dear Pandas. If you have a moment or two, we’d love to hear which of these things you were most surprised by. So drop on by the comment section.

The ‘Yup That Exists’ project is very popular online. It has branched out to all the major social media channels and dug its roots deep. For instance, on Facebook, it’s amassed a whopping 711.6k followers.

Meanwhile, the ‘Yup That Exists’ project has over 401k followers on Instagram. Whereas on TikTok, it has over 554.8k followers and has collected over 14.8 million likes across all of its videos. Say what you like, but strangeness clearly sells, especially when paired with interesting information. And the entire project has won over the hearts of many an internet user.

However, you describe the things in this list—peculiar, odd, downright bizarre, or even aesthetically challenged—one fact remains: they’re eye-catching. They stand out. They hook you and reel you in because they’re so far away from the norm.

Earlier, Bored Panda spoke about this with Swiss design experts Jonas Nyffenegger and Sébastien Mathys who run the Ugly Design Instagram project. According to them, they have a love for ugliness that keeps growing, meaning the line between ugliness and beauty gets blurred. And that helps content stand out from the crowd.

It assumes that there are forms of life that are not sentient (aware of one's own existence) that are ok to be cooked alive. I feel all life is equally valuable, if not equal tasting. Respect the life given.

"It appears more and more of our followers have completely lost their taste. That’s a good thing. It means they’ll have to find it again. It will most likely be forever changed,” they told us.

Jonas and Sébastien explained to Bored Panda that different designs stand out from the crowd on social media. “When seeing an ugly design rather than perfect aesthetics (as defined in the 21st century)—scrollers takes notice,” they said that unpredictability wows viewers.

Some people even take bizarre designs to a whole other level by incorporating them into their homes and gardens. History teacher James Hull and landscape architect Bede Brennan, the founders of another popular Instagram page that celebrates weirdness in gardens, told Bored Panda that just because something has a funny vibe, a weird aesthetic, or is different doesn’t necessarily make it bad.

"We love the way people put themselves out there with their gardens. Gardens are a really personal thing and are always on display out the front of your home. They require huge amounts of effort and upkeep too," they said that even ugliness has artistic and aesthetic merit.

"Certainly, there is something about the ugly aesthetic which stands out on Instagram, a garden doesn’t have to be classically beautiful to stand out, make you happy, or be a landmark in the real world either," James and Bede told us that the peculiar really does stand out on people’s social feeds.

how it works: they carefully prune the branches of Kitayama cedar trees, ensuring the remaining shoots grow straight upwards. this results in round and straight timber (taruki) like the trees in the picture. harvesting takes around 20 years and the trees can grow up to 100 shoots at a time. I hate things like that and I don't even smoke. I fully support smoking bans in public places where your smoke can harm others but what I do with my body is not the business of a nanny state government.

Is this any different from forcing people to wear seatbelts or helmets? It's strictly for their own health, and the risk far outweighs the luxury. Speaking from an American perspective, I think it's prudent to have more "nanny" laws from a nation with universal healthcare; if people's healthcare is being paid by the public taxes, then it's in the public interest to put a stop to needlessly reckless habits that cost them money. To put it bluntly, it actually IS the government's business.

In the UK, the ban on public smoking (2007) and other interventions have reduced the rate of children taking up smoking by around 40%. It's not something that happens overnight. If smoking in NZ can be reduced to zero within say 50 years, then it will have been worth it. They have to start somewhere. And I speak as someone who smoked most of my adult life, starting at 15.

That's why I think this law is great. It is not making current smokers have no access to cigarettes, as it is so hard to quit. It is stopping the younger generations from ever starting in the first place (or at least that's the aim).

Cigarettes and tobacco are two of the most highly taxed commodities so what is going to be taxed higher in New Zealand now as a result of the government creating a short fall in its own budget? Two other highly taxable commodities are petrol and diesel so again with the push for electric vehicles leading to a drop in tax from fuel, so either something weird is going to happen where tax and money just disappears from the world or we are going to start getting taxed for things like the air we breathe

It's all a slippery slope and when you picture the world without all the "bad" things you only think of what you agree with. I am pro-life but I will always support and vote pro-choice bc I have no right to tell someone else what they can or can not do to their bodies. What if the government said tattoos were banned or piercings? What if it was banning harmful literature? It makes common sense bc Tobacco ruins people but when you give an inch they take a mile. It's a slippery slope.

It is if the country has free healthcare, and has to pay for the insane amount of lung cancer caused by cigarettes. Cigarettes are really dangerous, other forms of nicotine are so much safer. I think some people are confused about this law - it isn't to stop kids from accessing tobacco products. It is sayin anyone who is CURRENTLY younger then 14 can NEVER purchase these products, even when they are of legal age to do so. So when these kids turn 20, 30, 40... they still cannot purchase. Making it illegal for some and legal for those who are already older is what I think the bigger problem is.

One thing I think a lot of people are misinterpreting is that this is mostly about tax dollars. Most people do not think about how much others use of the medical services their tax pays for. When you have a universal healthcare sytem what matters is that you get what you need, not nosing around to check how much others are using. The bottom line is, use of tax dollars are not the main aim of this bill. It is more about public health. They want to make sure there is one less addictive substance out there that can drastically affect the overall health of the nation. It's about stop the citizens from smoking before they even start.

New Zealand is always so progressive: creating indigenous parliamentary seats (1857); granting women the vote (1893); advocating an eight-hour working day (1840); state-funded old-age pensions (1898); the world’s most extensive system of pensions and welfare (1938); and its unique no-fault accident compensation scheme (1974).

I'm was a smoker for many years myself and managed to quit, and my best friend is still to this day wanting to quit but struggles so much with it. I can see the purpose with this and i think it is a interesting idea. However! The current smoking rate of New Zealand adults is 13.4 percent in 2019/2020, and 40.2 percent in 2011/12, Statistics from other countries also shows that it is slowly dwindling. I do think better education (let teenagers meet real people in the hospitals and stop showing those shitty anti drug movies from the 80's! ) and harsher prices is a way to go. But not forbidding. Its up to individuals to chose. Where do we draw the next line? limit on takeaway? alcohol? tax fat people more? Parents that share their unhealthy eating habits with their kids?

All of the unsurprisingly authoritarian/borderline communist comments on this aren't a huge surprise to me, given the audience that proliferates here. I would be very interested in hearing what people's thoughts are on the banning of alcohol and the criminalizing of fast food restaurants in general. My point being, this is a dangerously slippery slope, and people make poor health and poor lifestyle decisions on a daily basis. At what point do we draw the line? If someone is frequently promiscuous (I can just feel the "sexually liberated" readers getting uneasy now), and they are at a higher risk for STD's, statistically speaking, should we outlaw sex before marriage? According to this source, smoking and obesity actually cost less in health care dollars than "thin and healthy" people: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/05iht-obese.1.9748884.html I don't expect anything I said here to make sense for the vast majority of you, given that it's common sense. It's perfectly appropriate to have a NANNY telling people 14 and under what they can't do!!! Young people are absolutely not able to make a life altering reasoned decisions about whether to become addicted to nicotine or not.

This means they will never be allowed to buy them even when they turn 18, never ever

Imagine the different responses if yoga was gonna be phased out instead of tobacco. It’s all a matter of perspective. It doesn’t matter if one is healthy and the other deadly. Adult choices with adult consequences. People have been paralyzed doing CrossFit. But smoking does stink, literally.

What if that government is paying your medical bills from smoking related illnesses?

Amanda Nolting

For everyone saying it's government overreach, just consider. In New Zealand they have universal healthcare. In the US, you get cancer from smoking it's your problem to deal with. It's absolutely YOU dealing with the consequences of YOUR actions. But that's not the case here. When universal healthcare is in place, the government absolutely has a vested interest in your health. They're paying for the upkeep of your body. If you develop cancer or any of the other many possible conditions related to smoking, the government has to pay for it.

You know why this is brilliant? It's the way to put an end to something that should have ended years ago. And it's just going to happen. There will be hemming and hawing and within weeks (maybe months) it'll be over. It could work.

you can't discriminate one group of adult citizens in buying something that is legally being sold in the country... ban cigarettes altogether, I have no problem with that... but this is a terrible idea

That's smart, more criminalization of addiction. Thanks Nixon and Reagan, Bush Sr. and Jr. and Biden and Clinton and all the Dems who go right along with it all.

Why not just ban them altogether - like you do guns - same difference!

You'd have to deal with a whole load of people who are addicted to cigarettes and suddenly can't get their fix. Imagine how many stressed and angry people you'll have on your hands! Better that people never get addicted in the first place.

It's the same with the Youth Hostel at the Rocks in Sydney! Not only can you see the historical dig site underneath, but there are glass cases in the common room displaying various artefacts.
