Not everything goes downhill as we age. Well, surely our close friends circle becomes smaller, hangovers get worse and more responsibilities fall on our shoulders. But a new body of research has shown that some of our brain abilities improve as we age.

For example, a 2011 study looking at data from more than 60,000 people found that our ability to recognize faces continued to improve as we age—until just after we hit age 30. "At almost any given age, most of us are getting better at some things and worse at others," lead study author and MIT department of brain and cognitive sciences researcher Joshua Hartshorne commented to Business Insider.

Another more recent study found that some of our abilities, like reading others' emotions and recalling events that have just happened, to name a few, keep improving until we turn 30. Incredibly, skills like basic math and a larger vocabulary rise throughout our lives and reach their peak around when we turn 50.

Does that mean that we get smarter with age? Well, it depends what we define as ‘smart,’ but some of our cognitive abilities do indeed improve as we age. However, some will deteriorate, like our ability to quickly process and recall information (also known as fluid intelligence), which peaks at about the age of 18. After its peak, those abilities continually fall over the rest of our lives.

But that doesn’t mean it’s bad news for us. There is another study suggesting that having a greater purpose in life can help protect against cognitive decline among older adults. In fact, greater purpose in life has been linked to reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular problems, increased longevity, maintenance of general physical functioning, reduced risk of stroke and reduced incidence of sleep disturbances.

Don’t use Aluminium foil at all. It harms the environment and your health as well. Just butter your bread tin or use baking paper.

Why down? I would need a big plate and it wouldn't lay flat with the lip of the plate. Upright, I can shred right into a smaller serving bowl with no extra step.

It doesn't work very well if you put too much pasta for example and the water is full of starch. Only for water I guess (salted or not). I just lower the heat.

I always put a bit of butter when cooking potatoes. Never boiled over since. It also makes them taste great.

As can be evidenced by this photo, by doing so, you can burn said wooden spoon on a gas hob!

I do that all the time. Totally works. You can also blow on it to get the bubbles down. Works with boiling water like for pasta and rice.

This is my fave hack, I've not destroyed my stove top in years after using this technique. I first saw it used when I asked why there was a wood lid floating around in a giant ramen broth pot at a restaurant.

a few drops of oil can stop a pot of pasta from foaming up and boiling over.

If your pot is overfilled it's not going to stop water from boiling over, it will stop the bubbles that form and grow till they spill over.

Depends what is in the pot. If it's goopey thick liquid... Nothing except lowering the flame will help... However if it's just water or similar density liquid then anything that you can place flat across the rim of the pot, such as spatulas, spoons, forks, or chopsticks, will stop anything from boiling over. HOWEVER.... It DOESN'T mean it's a " set it and forget it! ' kitchen hack. This was only meant for making it easier for someone actively in the kitchen who doesn't want to literally... watch water boil... So they can work on other dishes and not get surprised by an erupting pot on the stove halfway through...

I usually just move the pot a little bit to slow the boiling down. Ofc. I turn the heat down a little but it doesn't change the boiling instantly. (Not on my electric stove anyway)

Jamie Oliver says you can put the wooden spoon on like that, then balance the lid of the pan on it, and it will simmer without boiling over. That works. I don't think you can do a full rolling boil without boiling over unless you're using a very big pot without lid.

You can stop a pot from boiling by removing it from the heat til it stops, then turning the heat down until it doesn't boil.

Not all the time. It's more dependent on what is in the boiling liquid and how close to the top of the pan the liquid started at prior to the boil.

It helps break up some of the bubbles so it doesn’t spill over as easily but it can def still boil over (tried and tested)

Actually if you put a spoon in the water you are boiling it reduces the chance of boiling over, but not stop completely.

I dont understand how people are doing it. It always works for me. Obviously not for normal boiling water. When you start cooking everything shouldn´t be at a level that goes over the top. But when things are cooking and the "foam" goes up, havin a spoon (wooden or silicone) that is over the top, specially is it´s slightly round towards the water, it wont spill........ this works while doing stuff like pasta or while you´re boiling milk for instance. Never had a problem with it...

Ah yes, the well known fact that water is terrified of wood and will not pass the magical line created by a wooden spoon. I don't think I believe this one, usually I know it's boiled over because my kitchen sounds like someone filled it with snakes when the water hits the hob

Tin foil has a shiny and dull side because of how it's manufactured. It's so thin, they put two sheets through the rollers at once. They've said they see no difference in which way you use it
