Not everything goes downhill as we age. Well, surely our close friends circle becomes smaller, hangovers get worse and more responsibilities fall on our shoulders. But a new body of research has shown that some of our brain abilities improve as we age.
For example, a 2011 study looking at data from more than 60,000 people found that our ability to recognize faces continued to improve as we age—until just after we hit age 30. "At almost any given age, most of us are getting better at some things and worse at others," lead study author and MIT department of brain and cognitive sciences researcher Joshua Hartshorne commented to Business Insider.

Another more recent study found that some of our abilities, like reading others' emotions and recalling events that have just happened, to name a few, keep improving until we turn 30. Incredibly, skills like basic math and a larger vocabulary rise throughout our lives and reach their peak around when we turn 50.

Does that mean that we get smarter with age? Well, it depends what we define as ‘smart,’ but some of our cognitive abilities do indeed improve as we age. However, some will deteriorate, like our ability to quickly process and recall information (also known as fluid intelligence), which peaks at about the age of 18. After its peak, those abilities continually fall over the rest of our lives.
But that doesn’t mean it’s bad news for us. There is another study suggesting that having a greater purpose in life can help protect against cognitive decline among older adults. In fact, greater purpose in life has been linked to reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular problems, increased longevity, maintenance of general physical functioning, reduced risk of stroke and reduced incidence of sleep disturbances.

Not the case with those hermetically closed bulletproof pieces. There are always a few of those clam-shut suckers in every bag. You have to smash those with a rock.
I have strong teeth so I always get those ones. I like to think they're more hygienic lol
Load More Replies...I typically have a set of pliers about when eating pistachios. Just in case.
At bit more convenient then teeth, I've got really strong nails so I just stick an edge in and pry it open.
I learned you shouldn't eat the one that didn't open cause they may be bad.
If I remember correctly, it's because they are from the nightshade family. They are steamed to partially cook them and break down any toxins, which also opens the shell. The implication is that the closed shells are uncooked so may still be slightly poisonous.
🤣😂 not even close! pistachio, (Pistacia vera), small tree of the cashew family (Anacardiaceae). Nightshades are Solanaceae. Not toxic all except to horses. Occasionally nut mold, so unless you have nut allergies.
That's what I thought. Can't remember exactly why but I think the impenetrable ones are nature's way of saying you're not supposed to eat them.
Like oysters that won't open when you boil them. If I remember correctly those shouldn't be eaten..?
Those are for guests you didn't invite over. Put them into a separate container so they'll keep.
or a meat tenderizer. I have one that you can crush someone's skull in
Or knife. I did so, and then decided to have a two-week brake in regard to playing guitar. Sucks big time, that!
I remember when pistachios were red. Still don’t know why they did that but they were pretty.
Exactly! A paradox. It's like the chicken and the egg. And eggs also have shells! Life is weird.

Seriously? It is easier for him to use a shell as an opener instead of, you know, fingers?
You get the odd ones that have the smallest of slits in the shells that you can't get a finger nail in, or maybe you've just cut your nails? Then get the end of a shell. Put it in the slit and twist. It'll pop right open. Been using that technique for years on those pesky ones.

You just made me want to cry. Then again I do not even want to understand tiktok.
Yep. I've had male and female roommates over the years who didn't do chores or learn to cook growing up. I did have a couple guys who were shocked that I wasn't just going to be their new mommy and cook for them and pick up after them, which is not something I got from the women. Most of them didn't, though. They were content to live like slobs and eat instant ramen all the time.
We need to remember everyone has different experiences. Things you learned growing up are relative. I never knew until I was in my thirties that the refrigerator door hinges could be moved. Now it seems obvious but it had just never come up before. Everyone doesn't own an instant pot, or have the same hangovers, or regularly use a cooler for things. Don't be a jerk - people have different experiences.
Everyone has different life experiences, but some of these "discoveries" consist of reading the installation material the comes with a product. Now, given that some of these products may have been purchased second hand (and thus without the manual), there is room for some benefit of the doubt. I just feel that if you have reached your 30s without already having learned most of these, society has let you down.
I do not have an insta-pot either but I do know about the foil and the fridge hinges. In this case he really does read like a “look what I just found out!” kid. My own mother at the age of 70 acted like she had been the first person ever to discover socks (I’m not even exaggerating). But like you said, everyone has different life experiences
Theres plenty of 30 year old women who pretty hopeless domestically by some standards. . .ive worked with nurses who have never cooked a meal in their lives, dont have kitchen utensils and whose houses are a domestic nightmare. The filrhiest house i ever saw was one owned by achild services supervisor who inspected facilities for child care. Very few male nurses knew how to iron clothes because they were never taught the skill, plenty of female nurses are absolute slobs at home . . . . .its easy to laugh but if you arent taught these tip, teicks and skills then how can you be expected to know them . . . . . hell, ive been a gym goer for over 40 years but i still come across young men and women who dint know how to form, plan or implement a workout simply because whilst everyone ASSUMES this generation is oh so internet savvy, many arent and dont know how to 'research' a topic. . . . . . another thing to take into consideration is the cordoning off of some skills like car maintenance.
Lots of nurses are unfortunately also sadistic nutcases. I used to live below one who worked graveyard shifts and had a MASSIVE "emotional support" dog (it wasn't) who would run around and she absolutely refused to do anything about the noise. When I moved out she finally bought rugs for the floors. I have met numerous nurses like this-- I truly believe some of them join the medical profession because they like to see other people suffer. It's usually the rich white perma-sorority girls from rich families
Right? Reads like other “life hacks you don’t know” articles that tend to proliferate on FB, YouTube, et cetera. Still…there are many hacks here that aren’t bad (even if most seem to be common sense).
This is the average 30 year old of a child with shitty parents. Most of his claims are verified bullshit and the others that are true, I learned when I was about 9.
Maybe he’s a 30 yr old who has been drunk or stoned for many years and lost years of being productive at home or being around functional adults. People can get emotionally stunted because of the years lost while high, maybe functional “adulting” development stalls too.
I think there's a lot of ppl, men & women that inadvertantly waste food because they don't know a lot of kitchen tips. Not uncommon. Tips, lil hacks are for sharing
Spells and edits like a 5 y.o., too. Is it really so hard to take an extra 5 seconds to proofread before hitting "send?"
I had the exact same thought! Almost all of this is on page one of the products' manual. I don't understand how people can buy something and not read the manual.
Every time I see another TikTok video I’m really trying to stay objective and read it through. And every time it’s either bunch of bullshit or things so obvious kids in kindergarten probably knows it. At some point you have to ask if this is the generation that is that stupid, which I really doubt, or TikTok is somehow an incubator of entitled people
considering some of the tiktok "challenges" i'd be inclined toward it being an incubator
Load More Replies...But since Incubators tend to grow things; wouldn't it be an anti incubator as it's making brains smaller?
Anything that puts people on camera does that, though. Unopposed idiocy mistakenly believes itself unopposed for being right, whereas in reality all they are is alone. Anyone else nearby would immediately point out the idiot's idiocy with a reality check of some sort. Since we can now put people on camera without a cameraman to laugh at how ridiculous the idiot's being, all bets are off.
I'm just going to say it... What's it say about you that you have Tik tok installed and clearly view the content yet here you are being well judgemental about the content just delete the app and let the kids be kids or are you upset that guys like this man get paid for their content and paid well
They decide to do a video, and only then they "discover" something "very interesting". Should be the other way around.
You both clicked and interacted with this so... anyway, TikTok has lots of high quality stuff, especially cultural education, but also a wide variety of enthusiast how-tos and even some pretty decent science explainers. BP has none of that stuff. There are occasionally cool photos and people talking about a place, but there aren't really deep dives or anything pushing boundaries except maybe of tasteful humor. Anyway, you can bemoan the TikTok generation but I am more inclined to assume it is your bias and filters and not the actual state of young people, or even social media.
considering my 9-yr-old godkid can do better.... yeah, this guy isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer... but don't let him have a knife. Please. Ye heavens.
Load More Replies...Yea...but I do kinda worry bout this fella...he can't be as simple as it makes him seem...can he?
Seriously, BP staff: could we PLEASE stop advocating tikfuck, especially with extremely stupid content like THIS? It's a data mining platform controlled by the chinese government that insta-bans everything that's contra the PRC's narrative (eg concerning Taiwan or Hong Kong), do we really want to support this? Oh an did I mention that this post was EXTREMELY STUPID and half of it is either useless or plain wrong?
I've commented a few times about how ridiculous it is to have to look at 14 giant photos of someone's nostrils or making a slightly different face or those who spent 3 hours doing their make up so want every angel to be shown, hoping they'll pass an audition. It gets voted down so much I stopped posting. I'm glad to see this Tik Tok crap annoys others, too. There's soooooooo many sites, funny things, beautiful things and places to reproduce or repost content besides Tik Tok, FB and reddit.
Has it occurred to any of you posting all the negative comments, that he's just sharing helpful little 'hacks' or tips he's learned to use, that others may not have known about and can try them out for themselves. I've been putting sheets on beds for half a decade and until today I didn't know the tag is on the lower left of the fitted sheets! And putting salt in a pan with hot oil in it is a helpful tip for anyone who's just learning to cook, no matter their age. Sheesh, so much negativity from so many... it's discouraging to see here.
Load More Replies...well I meant to type half a century! lol I've been on the planet over 50 years... been putting sheets on beds a lot longer than half a decade! But when growing up & first learning to cook, on my own, didn't know about sprinkling salt into hot oil in a pan to help prevent splattering. So, maybe some of these tips can help someone else who has no other help when learning... just a thought!
How many of you nitwits do your own laundry without ruining it, sew, iron your clothes, cook, clean, rather than your significant other doing it? Ya know; all the things a self-sufficient man can do.
They call those of us with such skill and expectations " toxic" now. Not to mention that striving to be self sufficient is a form of " white supremecy ".
Wow...tough guy...I'd bet you can thread a needle much less stitch a seem. Let me see be rude check...insulting check...feel like I'm missing something...oh yeah childish name calling have a nice day hope you enjoy a "self sufficient" man
Who wrote these captions? I think my 7 week old niece could've done a better job. Good Lawd.... also, those of you wigging out over the can opener thing, this is true, we just all have been doing it wrong. it makes it so the edges aren't sharp. However, it's a pain in the ass so I just stick to the "wrong" way.
Some tin openers only work on the side of the tin, some on the top.
I thought he was just introducing things most people know but many don't, does not mean he is not knowledgeable.
I wholeheartedly agree with you! All the negative comments here about this post are just rude.
Load More Replies...So is the arrogance of the poster to pretend he's "right" -just rude.
Did you know, when you put your dirty clothes in the washing machine and turn it on, after an hour or so they‘ll be clean?
Oh l, the idiocy. The only moron bigger than this guy is anyone that needed his "advice".
I did find the one about the dishwasher interesting. I had no clue it had a filter. I grew up overseas in a third world culture that didn’t have almost any of the technology I now have in the United States, including a dishwasher and a dryer. I had left the US when I was 8, so, when I first came back to the United States for college a few years ago, even though I was coming from a family that are citizens from America, I had no idea how to use a dryer or a dishwasher - even though I was 19. So, I find some of this stuff really interesting. Thanks!
People are railing on this dude for only learning these things now and not giving actual life advice, but it’s supposed to be funny, not useful. You can’t see it in the screenshots, but in the video it’s him making fun of himself for not knowing these things. Of course not everyone is this ignorant, that’s the point. You get some videos of him being ignorant, and some of actually useful tricks.
I think the comments are rather hard. These things you have to learn, and not everybody does at home
Hi I'm 13 and I knew the real stuff from the fake this is pretty bad
Well, I liked the posts, and there was only one I didn't get - the crockpot lid
This post gave us a revealing insight in the brain function of the average tik-tokker. All hope for the human race is lost.
Okay but I think they missed a lot of his really good life hacks. Also he's just trying to inform other people so I don't get why so many people are just dishing out hate (except for the dangerous ones)
The wooden spoon over a boiling pot actually works. I've seen it in action. Don't know how it works, going to look it up.
I blame his parents. Obviously, they didn't teach him anything.
This would be better titled, "Things Functioning Self-sufficient Adults Already Know."
Damm why is mostly everyone so mean I've read the comments and some are seriously mean like the one that called him a man child like seriously is that really necessary just think how you'd feel if you were this guy and had all these hated comments I'm with this guy all the way he taught me stuff I didn't know so stop with the nasty comments
Apparently all the negative commenters are just absolute frigging geniuses, who were taught everything ever by the time they were three. Except they never matured much past six...
Not at all but our parents didn't have to tie our shoes for our graduation ceremony...oh wait is that hurtful? Hmm...yeah don't care.
Again - I really don't see why these have to be tiktoks. Please protect your readers better by not promoting that site.
Looks like BP has run out of interesting things and started accepting all submissions
Next we’ll be seeing a useful tips I didn’t know until I was a grown ass adult article about “you see these funny loops around the waist band of your trousers? They can be used to thread a belt through and will prevent your trousers from falling down“ or “shoelaces can be used to tighten your shoes so they don’t fall off” and all the kids on TikTok will be like 0.O !
Many young people don't learn to fend for themselves because they aren't interested in learning... and many parents allow their children to be like this by enabling their "learned helplessness". Most soon learn on their own as the need arises, though.
Most of this content probably helped a lot of people. I didn't really gain from it(besides the instant pot), but people I know can.
This "man child" discovers things after he sees a TikTok on it. Sad, really. He seems genuinely uninterested in everything.
Sometimes it looked like he was just milking basic stuff for filler, like the wooden spoon to stop overflow, but some of this was good info! My husband and I weren't homeowners until fifteen years ago. Still on our first home, we're learning there is a lot of stuff we should have learned about and been don't all along and we are trying to catch up now. This week we're repairing our washer. It's been way out of balance and, once taken apart, we found a lot of wet lint deep in it. I think it will be fine now that it's cleaned, but we had no idea that there is a filter to be cleaned. I recently started treating our cabinets with beeswax, such a difference. We obviously should have been doing it all along, but had no idea. The travel pillow on front? I didn't fly regularly until my thirties. It was a few summers of flying home before I realized that one.
It's a good thing he's pretty, because he's hardly the brightest bulb in the box, is he? Poor dear.
These are either known to mankind for Decades or absolutely insane rubbish. The TikTok lot are bloody bonkers. A 'grown man' mansplaining and getting much of it wrong or having only just discovered these. Bless his very public ignorance 🤣
Almost everyone here has slammed this, or judged it negatively... Why? The guy is just showing others some of the things he's learned in life that come in handy for him, and he's sharing some of his helpful hints to others who may not have anyone else to teach them things. I'm a lot older than a lot of you and I've never seen tongs used to juice a lemon before, so I don't have a juicer, and I'm going to try it! Sounds like a good idea. And the salt in the hot oil of a skillet is a helpful tip, too. Why knock every single tip with such ugly, negative & 'judgy' remarks? His home looks very clean, I didn't see "up his nostrils" and I think he presented a few helpful tips for folks who'd like to learn something new to help them navigate thru some of lifes mundane chores. Old adage that applies here; If you've got nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
We are free to comment. Either nice or harsh. I and more else, won't see stupid and obvious things like that. And.. We are here for a reason. If we want to see tiktok, we go on tiktok.. Not here.
Load More Replies...Every single person on here clicked on to read /view his hacks though. I am 55, left home at 13 and never had parents. I learned 2 or 3 things and I also have a college degree and was on honor roll several times for a 4.0....there are those of us out here who fit the audience they are targeting so.....don't be so mean!!!
So basically your good at school but not basic existing...interesting
This was by far one of the more lame posts. It also reflects manyof your past posts, just repackaged with a different title and different model.
SEriously this was the worst more R*****d article ever!!! Just down vote everything about it
Most of these are obvious things. If he's just figuring this stuff out now....sheesh.
