We often form opinions about others based on the words they say, the actions they take, even the clothes that they wear, and since it's impossible to see the world through their eyes, we have to be extra careful with our perceptions.

At least, that's the theory, which in practice can be really hard. So when Reddit user DolphinsR4evr made a post on the platform, asking everyone "What is something you have a hard time not judging people about?", many had something to share.

From littering to neglecting pets, here are the submissions that received the most attention.

"People With Enormously Obese Pets": 35 Things People Can't Help But Judge Others For Poor treatment of pets.

u/FirehawkLS1 added:

I see that often (I volunteer at our local shelter) and it really makes me angry seeing the people come in and just surrender the dog because they couldn't be bothered to put in the time and dedication. Dogs aren't a damn appliance. They are a living breathing being with feelings. There honestly should be a database that those people get added to that prevents them from ever having a dog in the future if that's the reason why they are surrendering a dog (or any other animal). And I get that there are legimate reasons for surrendering an animal (owner dies and surviving family cannot properly care for it, loss of housing and job, etc).

I work in a restaurant and just today I had to dodge 4 kids doing somersaults on the floor while carrying very heavy trays of food. This isn't a one time thing. Not only is it disrespectful, it's dangerous. I have like 200lbs above your kid, without carrying heavy trays. If I trip and fall on your kid, they could get hurt. Bragging about *reading* books, too. I don't mean people who read something they enjoyed and want to share it with the world. I mean people who make reading their whole personality, talk only about how they're better than others because they read a lot and shame people who don't have time or prefer other hobbies. Or say that it's not a *real* book because it's fanfiction or from the mainstream. Unfortunately I've tons of book-snobs around me - for a few years they legit caused me to dislike reading. Fortunately, it passed.

If I die in a horse-riding accident it would be bloody unlucky (I don't do high-risk riding like cross-country or jumping) and I always wear a custom-fit body protector as well as my riding hat, so my ribcage/internal organs are protected as well as my head. Having said that, accidents do happen and it is a risk, always. In which case I'd be content with having died doing something I loved and that brought me so much joy.

I don’t feel bad for them. I am angry at them. I’m angry at their selfishness with not consideration for the impact their actions have on other people. Their families, the emergency services that rescue them/recover their bodies, the traumatised innocent bystanders, the MONEY spent on rescue and recovery.

As for caving - it is like a kid's ball-pit for adults! Every cave is different. And most caves are different coming out, than they were in going in. A true caver will have the best equipment - shoes, lights, ropes, etc - to prevent accidents. They will have extra batteries, lights, food, water, a means to keep dry and warm, etc. You could tow a semi-truck with the rope, carabiners, etc that I use. And they will have other equally prepared cavers with them. I have been in caves that have rooms larger than the local shopping mall. I have been in caves with waterfalls and rivers running thru them. And when I come across a situation I'm not equipped for, either equipment or ability, I turn around. It isn't about "thrill-seeking". I have discovered a world around me I never knew. I have gently placed fallen bats back onto the wall, preventing their death from freezing. I have seen animals that are blind, translucent, that have adapted to cave life. And I made life-long friends

To be fair those people are usually the first to admit they do not want sympathy for doing something risky. It's usually everyone else who is uncomfortable and want them to stop. You do have a mix of people who are clueless though who expect to be rescued from their stupidity. These people should be charged for the costs of rescue. I, myself engage in risky behaviors and never would want anyone to risk themselves rescuing me and certainly I would not want any effort put out to recover the body. I enjoy scuba diving alone. I enjoy walking the deep woods alone and have no problem doing things risky with power tools though I do wear safety gear. The freedom to risk myself is not something I would ever want to lose.

I think this attitude in general is weird. at least if you treat it as your default reaction. sure sometimes its hard to feel bad for people like the titanic sub but on the whole what does it do negatively to you to not be sympathetic?

As a smoker, I know it's disgusting. I never smoke indoors and always try to avoid people. If I'm smoking in public, I find a spot far out of the way if people approach I hold my cigarette over my head and try to move further away. I'm especially always watching for kids, they don't need the smoke, neither do any other people. I never, ever smoked around children and indoor smoking is even more disgusting and I don't do that either. I know my habit is gross, it's my choice (hubby and I are trying to quit, it's not easy but it's a goal) but no one else should have to put up with my smoking. I also don't leave the butts lying around, they are field stripped and properly disposed of.
