This post is not exclusively about a Friesian horse – it’s more universal. It’s about relationships, hence perfect for this time of year.
It’s about three people; Nancy, Carol and Harry, a Friesian horse named Annie and a half Shetland, half miniature pony aptly named Storm.
Annie was born at the farm on June 7, 2011 at 12:01 a.m. Annie’s Dam (Mother) would not let Annie nurse and treated the newborn as if she didn’t exist. A tenuous start for the newly minted Annie.
Carol, realizing the severity of the situation offered Annie to Nancy. In the hours prior to meeting Annie, Nancy read madly on how to support an orphaned foal as her life was in the balance. Nancy met Annie at the farm the next day and as Nancy said “that was it ” which translates as love at first sight. Annie was fed via bottle at 8:00 p.m. that night.
The next day Nancy moved into the tack room with two alarm clocks, Annie being in an adjacent stall. She would have to be fed a special formula, by bottle, every three hours around the clock if she were to survive. On the 12th day, Storm moved into the stall with Annie. Friends were now helping Nancy with some of the feedings giving Nancy a break from the routine which could not be varied. Bottle feeding by hand ended on June 18th and Annie was moved to Nancy’s farm on June 21st. Annie and Storm were separated but both continued to sleep opposite each other at the fence.
Nancy has Haflingers and for the next 5 months Annie and Storm were inseparable – Storm having taken on the role of Annie’s guardian.
Four years have passed and today Annie is a healthy, beautiful Friesian. Storm, in the interim has as the pictures will attest adopted another cause – Pippa.
We now have many new friends on the Friesian and Haflinger circuit and many new friends on social media as a result of peoples love of that singular majestic animal, the Horse.
