Traditional shepherds have lived and worked in the rural regions of Hungary for many decades. It is one of the most ancient jobs in agriculture, and even though it's a bit hidden from the public, it still exists in its original form in many ways.
The death-defying horse riding skills of the horsemen, the tough shepherds who guard the large flocks of sheep during all seasons, even in the coldest winter days, the famous strong grey cattle-herding shepherds - they all protect their ancient knowledge and rich cultural traditions, which is closely tied together with folklore songs and music. The most well-known area of shepherds is the Hortobagy region, but other, less known parts of the country also have its shepherds, guardians of the past.
