How I Made Floor Art From Random Wood Pieces

My name is Alexey Steshak. I’m a mad decorator, and I create WOW projects with my own hands.

Today I’m going to show you my new project – The Hardwood Floor with Ceramic Birds, which was made for a beauty salon.

I have been dreaming of creating such a floor for many years. And finally, my dream came true.

The total floor area is 56 sq. m. It took me five months to make it, and I worked seven days a week. I started on October 22nd, 2016 and finished on March 22nd, 2017. And that not counting the time for the material preparing and drying.

I used wind-fallen trees, some cut trees left after the fruit orchards thinning, and some trees were just brought by my friends. In the end, I had 40 bags of small wood pieces

So, I had such type of wood as: oak, Manchurian walnut, apricot tree, apple tree, pear tree, karagach, ash, birch, ash-tree maple, American walnut, cherry tree, larch, rowan and a little mahogany

The wood used for the “tree”: maple, birch, pine, larch, American cherry, pear, cherry, oak

For the background: apple, pear, apricot, Manchurian walnut, mahogany, oak, Siberian, Ukrainian oak, Hungarian beech, ash

I put the 10 mm plywood on a flat concrete subfloor and then glued the wood blocks on it

After the whole wooden part of the floor was ready, I started making the “birds”. I used broken ceramic tiles for that

Despite it was a long and very laborious process, it was a great pleasure for me, and I’ve never regretted that I started it

I love my occupation and I’m happy that I can come up with and implement such projects on my own

Hi Your craftsmanship is utterly stunning. I'm envious in the nicest way. If only I had the skills and the tools. Hope you'll keep creating such amazing work. Your love and passion shows in the result. Respect!

I wish you much success in all of your endeavors, sir. What you created is absolutely amazing and hopefully one day, you might consider giving lessons to others so that we can make using recycled wood and ceramics the standard in home renovations and in even becoming skilled volunteers for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.

I absolutely LOVE this. Amazing on many levels. Not only does it look beautiful, and show serious commitment and technical skill it also makes use of small pieces of wood that might have been discarded. If I were rich I'd commission you to come and make me one of these and I'd love it every day of my life. Fantastic work, you are a star.

From the looks of that pile, much of the process was left out of the article. A floor needs to be level. So those scraps hsd to be run through a joiner so they were all the same thickness. It was a LOT more work than the captions let on.

Awesome to see all the different kinds of wood in lights and darks! Amazing work. I also really like that the birds are not "real birds", yet clearly birds ;p

This is amazing how someone can come up with this and actually put it out. I don't think a lot of people would have the patience to make this and it's just so unique in it's own construct. I have seen a lot of modern art and just gave it an odd look, but this, my friend of the arts, is just extraordinary. And probably lots of fun to walk on minding my ADHD..

Beyond the beauty of the work itself, I'm impressed by the resilience of this artist and many others who will spend months, and years working on a piece. Amazing!

Your work is incredibly beautiful and I am stunned by the harmony of the mixtures... I love that there are mixed woods and wood mixed with tiles, I love that you continued the design on the wall! Very very nice work! :)

Incredible work! Aren't you afraid that thediffent kinds of wood wil slightly expand at a different rate from each other creating "bulges"?

How did you seal it? It not t&g and you forst glued but what of the tiny gaps? Many thick urethane coats or epoxy? A true labor of love. Here is to organic process construction and remodeling.

Fantastic art! Nice work. But how will the tree behave over time? Scary with so many different types. Wood is living. Some shrink and someone is expanding over time and with changing temperature. Please update in a year's time. Exciting

I did something similar last year but used another approach. Using a Laser Cutter M-800 I prearranged all tiles (ranging from 3cm to 50cm) in CAD and assembled it in just 2 days (24qm). Much easier and with the right algorithm you save a lot of time!

I really really liked the idea, of using (old) wood, back in shape of a tree and integration of ceramics. The overall quality is stunning. But looking at the last photos as an architect, circular line on skirtings and jamb and continuation of branch on wall was a little (how can I say) too much for me. I would prefer them to be modest, stay in the background and do not compete with the floor. Other than that, I can just appreciate the originality, effort and patience of it.

I love it, wood is such a lovely thing to work with. For my personal taste, it's a bit too scrambled - if I had taken this amazing time, I'd have sorted the wood-pieces by color and have the background flow into different shades. Which is why I'd never be able to do this, I'd get suck in micromanaging. The tree is gorgeous, and I love the doves/birds! Congratulations, I hope you're feeling a sense of pride whenever you walk over it :)

A truly stunning project. (Personally, I think the doors are a bit too 'noisy' and take away attention from the beautiful and unique floor.) I do hope to be able to see more of your work on here.
