tifa Report

Bored Panda reached out to Aga Karmol, a UK-based fine art equine photographer, whose stunning horse portraits made it to the finals of the 2023 TIFA. The jury awarded her images with bronze for "The Hug" and gold for "Angel's Hair."

The photographer behind these winning shots studied art and earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. As mentioned on the TIFA website: “Karmol cooperated with the biggest Polish national equestrian magazine, Kon Polski, regularly publishing photo stories from horseback travels across the world. Her photos and articles with an equine theme were also printed in Forbes and National Geographic Traveler. In 2005, Aga relocated to London and became a correspondent for the magazine. In 2014, she moved to Somerset and shifted her focus to fine art photography.

To learn more about the impressive photo of two fighting stallions that Aga skillfully captured, we asked the photographer what led her to choose this specific moment as the subject for her shot. Here’s what we found out: “I am passionate about horses and their natural behaviours. Even the breeds that don’t exist in the wild still carry the need of their ancestors' way of life in their genes.

Horses are highly social, and sparring matches are a norm in the wild, they are a play and a way to establish who is to be a leader. So, when a yard owner decided to put two stallions together to give them a little play, I couldn’t miss that moment. These are horses in their most natural state, doing what happy horses would do.”

The Hug By Aga Karmol

The Hug By Aga Karmol

Fighting stallions. This is what horses do when living wild. They won't kill each other, they fight to establish leadership. It is us, owners, who deprive them of their natural behaviour, because we are being overprotective. Keeping stallions alone often leads to them being frustrated and becoming agressive. Horses are social animals who are unhappy when they can't interact with others. During this photoshoot, none of them got injured. They were closely supervised to avoid any risk. After an initial fight, they were perfectly happy with each other.

Miracle Of Spring By Hiroki Matsubara

Miracle Of Spring By Hiroki Matsubara

This was early one spring morning. I went to a lake where cherry blossoms were in bloom. It was raining at night, and at sunrise the rain stopped and there was fog. While I was photographing the scenery, a rainbow appeared overhead. I hurriedly changed lenses to find the right composition and took the picture. Here is a shot of the spring cherry trees and the two miraculous rainbow arches! I took a 14mm shot, but it didn't fit, so I took multiple shots and composited them into a panorama.

I am a landscape and wildlife photographer with a wide range of genres in Japan. I usually work as a construction worker and enjoy using my camera. I work for various companies and NFT in a wide range of fields. I started participating in international photo contests outside of Japan in 2022!

When asked to describe the experience of being present during the shoot and to share the emotions she felt as she captured the action, Karmol told us: “Being there so close and watching them was uplifting and very emotional. They may seem violent in the photographs, but they were not trying to kill each other! There was a lot of prancing and showing off, and the moments of them getting together were very short - just a few seconds - so I had to watch them carefully through the viewfinder and react quickly.”

Hehuan Mountain Dark Sky Park(HMDSP) in Taiwan is far away from the light pollution of urban area, it is easy to be here by driving for stargazing the dark sky over 3000m altitude all year. Taiwan is one of most ecologically diverse areas in Asia, due to Eurasia’s animals and plants migrated to here during the ice age, there are some special species, like Alpine rhododendron, could be found in here. It took me two years for scouting and waiting for the best timing to complete this collection, it presents the landscape with dark sky I love in this beautiful mountain.

The photographer added that the size difference between the two horses made the entire scene even more dramatic: “The pearl-coloured Andalusian was much bigger than the black Welsh Pony - but it was the Welsh who was the feisty one, provoking confrontations all the time. It was exciting to watch, especially knowing that they were closely supervised by their owner (a horse behaviourist and trainer), so they were safe from incidental injuries.”

Curious to learn more about Aga’s personal philosophy on the relationship between horses and their natural behaviors, we asked the photographer, and she shared: “Personally, as a horse owner, I think that we should give our horses the possibility to live as close to their natural way of living as possible. This means open space, pastures, interactions with each other, and not stable boxes most of the day. Horses are animals of big open spaces and big herds.”

Lastly, Karmol shared details about upcoming equine photography projects that she’s excited to explore: “In my work, I photograph a lot of staged scenes since the breeds of my choice don’t live in the wild. Sometimes I capture feral horses of Exmoor or Dartmoor (England) - but one of my dreams would be to photograph wild mustangs of America.

Right now, I am heading to capture wild Yilky Horses of Turkey, who live in Cappadocia. And soon after, the most beautiful Andalusians in Spain.”

Swamp By Dennis Lehtonen

Swamp By Dennis Lehtonen

The aurora forecast for the night was promising so I walked a few kilometers to a nearby swamp area. Soon as the sky got dark the aurora was visible overhead next to the bright moon, but eventually got so far south that it completely disappeared from my location. At the same time the people of south Finland had their first proper aurora show in years. Later on the auroras would return to the more northern latitudes where the lights would explode in brightness and you could see the purple rays rising high into skies. The best parts finished just on time as the fog was starting to cover the sky.

I am passionate about polar regions and enjoy capturing the natural phenomenon, such as the northern lights and rare clouds. Having spent most of my life living in big cities of south Finland I felt depressed not being able to see the night sky properly due to light pollution, so I moved to the northern parts of the arctic to the small towns and villages. I move frequently as I enjoy discovering new rural locations in the arctic with each location having their own adventures and plan on creating a free astronomy club in Greenland.

Parrot Tulips By Tim Platt

Parrot Tulips By Tim Platt

These homegrown tulips have been photographed in a stylised way using studio lighting. The macro lens offers a shallow depth of field so in order to achieve enhanced clarity and definition a focus stacking technique has been used. Between 30 to 120 frames at slightly different focal points have been blended on each image to create pin-sharp focus from front to back. The goal was to observe as much fine detail as possible.

For Tim Platt, photography is above all about the simple joy of seeing. After over 25 years experience in delivering international advertising campaigns for blue-chip companies like Unilever, P&G, Samsung, LG, Britvic, and GSK among many others, Tim has mastered the craft and technique required at the highest echelons of commercial photography. Although craft and technique should not be underestimated, it is a mysterious neural connection between the eye and the brain that makes great images, and technique should always remain safely behind the scenes. He runs his own studio in central London.

I took this photo at the end of a heavy storm in the Tuscan countryside. While I was shooting, I appreciated the typical smell that the rain leaves on the wet grass and it reminded me of when, with my father, I admired the storms from the window of our house, hence the title, Scent of storm.

From an early age my parents have always taken me in their free time in the middle of nature, teaching me to respect it. Nature has always benefited my life. In fact, whenever I need to find myself and contemplate my thoughts, I escape the city and immerse myself completely in nature. I try to convey this value to my son Jonathan as well. In the hope that his generation can protect our beautiful planet in the best possible way.

Yearlings On The Snow By Kazuya Okuda

Yearlings On The Snow By Kazuya Okuda

All the horses pictured here are yearlings that are raised to become racehorses in the future. The snow makes them look expressive. This is because they (the field blanketed in white, the drifting snow, the falling snow by canter and so on) seem to emphasize their expressions and movements. They do well in environments with temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius. They are still in the growth stage, and it is hoped that they will survive the harsh winter and grow stronger. By spring, it will probably be even stronger.

Misty Layers By Giovanna Arnaud Fleming

Misty Layers By Giovanna Arnaud Fleming

A colorful and glowing sunset over layers of mountains emerging from the mist, all bathed in warm orange hues.

A consequence of growing up in mountainous areas is a sensitivity to the subtle cycles and seasonal changes of the landscape. The trees, the rivers, the fields, the snow cover, and the mountains, which show different aspects of themselves from one hour, one day, one season, to the next. The world’s wild places - mountains, glaciers, polar ice – are under increasing pressure, both from climate change and the relentless intrusion of human activities. One way to inspire people to value and make an effort to preserve these areas is by sharing images of them.

Dramatic Sunset Vibes By Justinus Sukotjo

Dramatic Sunset Vibes By Justinus Sukotjo

Selong Belanak beach is located in Lombok island, West Nusa Tenggara, East Indonesia, a beautiful and quiet beach and it's a perfect place to learn surfing. It's a beautiful white sand beach and also perfect place to have a zen and relaxed time far away from day to day busy life. I can also see colourful fishing boats pulled up on the beach with the local fishermen preparing their freshly caught fish. Furthermore, when came to sunset time, I saw one colourful fishing boats and I was using the opportunity to make a spectacular sunset photography.

I am a photography enthusiast with genre of landscape (color & black and white), fine art black and white and human interest. Although I started to make a photo since analog camera and mostly for family documentation, I started to focus on landscape photography since 2016 and human interest photography since Sep 2021. I am so passionate with photography because photography is an art that I can enjoy for myself and also for other people who love with photography.
