Latvian Artist Carves Wood Cabinet In Shape Of Giant Beetle

Alder wood cabinet made in a shape of beetle by a Latvian artist and designer Janis Straupe. This is a sculpture with function, in its own style that does not belong to any art decade.

“The Beetle” cabinet was made in 2005 and it took 3 months to carve (over 11 staff guided by Janis). Inside the cabinet there are 11 drawers, section for stationery, wine rack, and paperwork section with two secret sections.

this wardrobe was our ยฃ 1,000 sale on ebay. I wanted to buy it, unfortunately there was no way to bring it into the apartment :( sad, so much heart and work and I ended up on ebay

Only three months? How beautiful this is, I love scarab beetles and the Egyptians made them lovely creatures also. Now if only there were some inlays to really make this beetle pop with color. I really thought I'd never see craftsmanship like this again.

It's gorgeous. The article says the cabinet's artistry isn't based in any style, yet there's a strong Art Nouveau iinfluence in the use of plants and animals. Here, they're used with very simple up and down patterns, but in Nouveau there would be more looping and intersecting (sometimes centered, sometimes off center.
