If You Think You Have Had Bad Thanksgiving Days So Far, These 50 People Might Prove You Wrong (New Pics)
Thanksgiving is an important holiday in America. Pew reports that 91% of Americans said in 2024 that they will be celebrating Thanksgiving – that includes large majorities in all major demographics. It's the time for the whole family to get together and say how thankful they are for each other.
On paper, it sounds wonderful and idyllic. However, the reality is sometimes much more bleak. This list is about those times: the times when the turkey wasn't perfect, when family members did something embarrassing, or people had to celebrate Thanksgiving solo. So, check out what kind of disappointments folks have had during their recent Thanksgivings!

Made A Meat Pie With Leftovers From Thanksgiving. I Think He's Cute
For some, Thanksgiving is a pleasant few days with family they haven't seen for a long time. For others, it's like the Thanksgiving episode of The Bear, "Seven Fishes": an onslaught of anxiety from all directions. The most common fears are that the meal won't be perfect and that family members will want to cut each other's throats by the end of the evening.
Yet these two worries can be completely manageable. As a perfectionist myself, especially when it comes to cooking and baking, I can relate to the people for whom the turkey is never cooked well enough and the mashed potatoes aren't the creamiest to their potential. And, as far as family goes, the key is not to talk about politics.

Load More Replies...I suffered oven failure one Thanksgiving. Of course it was the year WE hosted most of the family. What a disaster. Took me a couple of hours to realize the turkey wasn't getting cooked. It was the lack of that wonderful scent of roasting turkey that tipped me off that something was amiss. The oven never got above "warm." Guess what we went shopping for on Black Friday.

Those hosting Thanksgiving this year might already have every step planned—there are only a few days left, after all! Experts claim that the very start of Thanksgiving dinner should be a month before: that's when you go over the guest list, find the recipes, and get any gear that will be necessary for your meal.
According to Martha Stewart, the actual food preparation should be a week before. That's when you clean out your fridge to make room for the turkey and thaw the turkey itself. A week before Thanksgiving is also when you should prepare the brine and finish your shopping list for sides. Those who want homemade pies might also make pie dough and freeze it up to a month in advance.
We Got A Request From That Aunt Proclaiming That We Now Owed Her $75 To Cover The Cost Of The Thanksgiving Meal
It wasn’t at the dinner, but my aunt invited us all over to her and her families house (which was out of state) for thanksgiving, and it was all going to be provided by them. So our family decided to go and offer to bring something, anything just as a thank you. But she persisted we didn’t bring anything
The dinner was good, and it was an overall very great thanksgiving. Well, sometime about a month later, we got a letter from that aunt proclaiming that we now owe her $75 to cover the cost of the meal. My parents were furious, as we had just spent a lot of money to go down and see her, and had even offered to lighten her load by bringing some of our own dishes. They wouldn’t even be so mad if it weren’t for the fact that she didn’t even tell anyone about this when she was giving invitations.

Today is actually the perfect day to prep your veggies and make dips, relishes, and dressings. Did you know you can peel your potatoes two days in advance and keep them submerged in water so they don't brown until the day of? Try out that trick! As for dressings and relishes, they'll only get better once they sit for a few days in the fridge.

Nobody Showed Up For Thanksgiving
Then, the star of the evening—the mighty turkey. To cook the kind of turkey we often see in pictures in cooking magazines—roasted brown and crisped skinned—is quite a feat. As food scientist Nathan Myhrvold explained to NPR, that's because different body parts of the turkey don't cook the same way.
So I Get An Email With Photos From My Girlfriend's Family's Thanksgiving
Just when I think there is nothing left to creep me out enough to give me nightmares, this soul stealing abomination against humanity comes rolling in.

We Did Eventually Save The Turkey
"The breast meat will dry out if you cook it at the same temperature that you need to cook the thighs to have them be done," Myhrvold says. The breast meat might also just be dry by nature. For the skin to turn brown and crispy, you need to cook it at least at 175 degrees Celsius.

Oven doors about a safe place for it to land as any. Scoop it up, call it a strawberry crumble. Serve with lots of whipped cream and ice cream, laugh about it, you did good.
What he recommends doing so that the breast doesn't turn out dry is injection brining. When you brine a turkey by submerging it in salty water, it makes the meat juicer but does the same to the skin. Instead of crispy, it then turns rubbery. Myhrvold says he takes a brining syringe, fills it up with brine, and pokes the turkey. "You'll probably put about a cup into the turkey," he says.
Grandparents House Caught Fire While They Were Away For Thanksgiving
Sigh. Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving!
To make the skin even crispier, Myhrvold advises keeping the turkey in the fridge uncovered for at least three whole days. This dries out the skin even more. Then, after three days, you take it out of the fridge and rub it with any neutral oil: canola, sunflower, etc. However, if your turkey still doesn't look like from a magazine, don't fret. Myhrvold says a common food photography trick is to use brown shoe polish. Ew!

What if you're not worried about food this Thanksgiving and the eminent evening together with certain family members is the thing you dread? Well, you're not alone, as 59% of Americans are worried about political disagreements causing tension at the Thanksgiving table. Thanksgiving Disaster?
People - when you are cooking stuff in al-foil trays you have to put a cookie sheet,.or similar tray underneath to move the al-foil trays in and out of the oven and wherever you need to move it. So many cooking disasters would be avoided if people did this simple thing.
Right?!?! I hate seeing all those pics with spilled foil trays. They have no bottom support, they're not meant to be used on their own.
Load More Replies...I think most of them are fake. Step 1: take picture of table before everyone sits down. Step 2: lament "nobody came!" Step 3: profit/upvotes/attention.
Load More Replies...#1-never leave cooking unattended. Burnt food is wasteful but a burnt down house is devastating. #2-as mentioned, if anything that you're cooking is in an aluminum foil tray, stick a nice solid cookie sheet underneath it because otherwise you're going to pick it up, it's going to be hot, it's going to be heavy, it's going to fall, you're going to cry. #3-whether you're cooking a turkey consider brining it first (not in pickle brine) make a bath out of mostly water, some salt some sugar some spices, let it sit in this bath for about 8 hours in the fridge or a big cooler full of ice and the brine and then when you cook, it'll be nice and juicy and you don't even have to baste. (This works for pork too, 4 hours is usually sufficient) #4-Thanksgiving is about gratitude, not about stuffing yourself silly. Be happy no matter what you've got, plenty of other people have less. #5-always cook with wine. If you're not actually putting it into the food, put it into the cook.
This list makes me glad that Thanksgiving isn't a one time event. Because next year it would hopefully be better
Alas, when something beyond just "burning the turkey" happens, it kind of ruins all the Thanksgivings to come. My dad was helping put up our Christmas lights on Thanksgiving in 2000, after the meal, and he fell off of the ladder and sustained catastrophic brain damage. Pretty much put a damper on the holiday for us for all time. "Next year" was never better, unfortunately, because the accident had happened on that day, none of us could forget that aspect, and my dad was so brain-damaged that he was near-vegetative (we took care of him at home.) I loved my father dearly, and that's why I was his primary caregiver for 21 years after his accident (he died in 2021) but Thanksgiving was permanently sort of ruined for my family. My mom doesn't even acknowledge the holiday any more and jaunts off to her favorite Indian casino during Thanksgiving week.

Not really solo but on Monday I stopped at Pizza Hut, had to get out and go in because they don't have a window. Stepped up on the curb and fell. Landed on my left knee and somehow managed to to twist around and hit my right ankle just above my bulging tendinitis. When I was able to touch it felt a depression. Could hardly drive home cause I could hardly push my foot up or down. Had to go to the ER. Put a splint on a used a knee walker (don't recommend). Saw ortho and they put in a boot and a regular walker. Have all the fixings for Thanksgiving but can't stand to cook. We had crackers, frozen chicken, and other snack food. Pretty sure it's torn/ruptured. And now the oven won't heat, discovered that last night. No service call till Monday.
Have spent quite a few in ER , kids always seem to get sick on a holiday.
This reminds me to make sure I have plans to be ANYWHERE else but available to avoid getting invited by the 'we know everything you do outside your home' neighbors.
This year, I am very grateful for the fact that Thanksgiving tends to be a much more relaxed holiday in Canada than south of the border. Also for the fact that we already celebrated in October, when it was rather easier to feel grateful and optimistic about the future of the world.
On Thanksgiving Day in 2000, my dad went onto our roof to help put up our Christmas lights after we'd eaten (my family normally ate a Thanksgiving "lunch", so it was late afternoon.) He slipped and fell off of the ladder and hit our concrete driveway, sustaining catastrophic brain damage. He lived, but the brain damage was so massive that he was bedridden, in diapers, had to have a feeding tube, trach, and was near-vegetative for the next 21 years. We took care of him at home (I was his primary caregiver.) Thanksgiving as a holiday was pretty much permanently ruined for my family. And I couldn't even "feel thankful" that my dad was "at least still alive", since he had repeatedly expressed he never wanted to be kept alive that way. My mom ignored his wishes when he could have been allowed to die with dignity. Instead, his two daughters changed his diapers for two decades. I hoped every day that his brain damage was so severe that he had no awareness of his situation.
This makes me grateful that we don't celebrate with extended family. It's the five of us. We sleep in, put on the MST3K marathon, start cooking, serve charcuterie at lunch, and full meal at dinner, with board games on and off throughout the day, and a big walk after dinner. It's always a cozy day. The day after is even better because we usually all have that day off too. It's the same as Turkey Day but no need to cook. A day of games, laziness, and leftovers.
That's how my family is. Just my parents, siblings, and my sister's fiance. We used to do the big holiday when my grandparents were alive, and sometimes I miss it, then I read stories like this and I'm content with my little 6 person holiday

I don't understand the yank obsession with travelling for a mid-week "holiday". Stay home and make a phone call. And as for the obsession with turkey, screw it. Buy a rotisserie chicken, save yourself the hassle. Make stuffing with chicken stock, onions and bread crumbs, bake it in a pan. It tastes the same.
Ah, yes, a holiday where we do something that doesn't entirely make sense, because that's the way we've always done it. Funny how Americans are the only people in the world with one of those.
Load More Replies...When you get excited about something, looking forward to it all year and it end up being a mess, then you're upset. Yes, there are worst things in this world, but people are still allowed to be sad over a turkey.
