Recently, one Texas restaurant has gotten into the spotlight and the reason wasn’t their stuffed turkey legs, although they describe them as ‘world famous.’ The Turkey Leg Hut in Houston, Texas has launched their new dress code which has stirred quite heated opinions.

“Unfortunately, due to the attire of some guests, we were forced to put this new policy in place as we remain committed to ensuring all guests are comfortable while visiting us,” the restaurant stated and added that “We are not a club.”

Some people say it’s fair enough for the owners to set their own rules, while others criticized the idea of being told what to wear when dining out. So let’s see what this controversial dress code is like and what people had to say about it below!

This restaurant has received national attention for launching a new dress code policy reminding customers that they “are not the club”

"My house, my rules" seems to be an incomprehensible concept to a lot of people. They also do not get that no one is interested in seeing butts, pubic areas and boobs while they are having a night out with their family. It's sad sign when places have to enforce a dressing code to keep inappropriately dressed idiots out.

Ironically, it usually seems as though the folks that can't comprehend the "my house my rules" idea are always the ones that say "well if you don't like it then just move on" whenever it comes to something that they are in favor of.

No revealing clothing? Ok I guess. No house shoes? Weird but ok I guess. BUT: No du-rags? No baggy clothes? That's not a dress code, it's a 'don't be too black' code. I guess this isn't obvious to non-Americans, but this is a common tactic. Think about it: how is wearing a du-rag not 'family friendly'?

I've never understood people who go out with hair bonnets/curlers in because the whole idea of using these is to look good when you go out, so why are you wearing them outside the house? It makes no sense and I'm a black woman.

Went to a fast food place last week with a man at the table next to me with a T-shirt that said "Women are for F*****g," (who sells these? ugh.) Yeah, I was offended, my daughter was offended. It felt a bit strained at the meal. Now this is fast food, I'm not saying anything, but a resturant owner should be able to set a limit on a shirt like that. I would certainly appreciate it. I don't care about what type of shoes, hair coverings, etc. because that is not trying to offend. This was. Anyway just was thinking of a relatable example.

As an American, I have to say that their dress code may have become necessary. I've literally seen people in pajamas at their court hearing. I'm not sure when we lost understanding of the concept of dressing in context, but we apparently have.

Yeah that sounds like severe depression if they went to court in their pajamas. I try not to leave the house when I'm going through an episode but if I absolutely have to I wear a sweatsuit same as pajamas but seemingly acceptable

It could be a little more gender neutral, perhaps, but it's not really setting a high bar when it's basically asking people to be dressed tidily and don't have their ass hanging out.

NO PAJAMA PANTS!! I see so many people wandering around with pajama pants on (flannel with Spongebob or the like) and slippers, shuffling along. I wouldn't wear them at the grocery store, much less a "night out". Good for them for wanting to change their image.

They have hookah, late hours including having a dance floor, live music and trap music, etc. Sounds like a club. Which makes clubwear the obvious thing to wear to that place at night. If they want to become a family oriented restaurant, that's cool but they better not have any of those other things anymore or else what was the point of changing the dress code? Tbh it sounds like they should do "family restaurant" in the day and "club" at night, which literally is a thing some restaurants already do so it's completely not a big deal, they just made it into one because they alienated and called out their clubbing patrons

They're a private, family-owned business. It's their right to instate and enforce a dress code if they want to. It's up to customers to either meet that code or go somewhere else. Sure, they may loose business, but that's their right as well.

Some of the rules make sense, but banning wave caps and do-rags seems kinda racist. It's head wear, nothing obscene or revealing about it. At worst it's a bit casual, but are you going to insist all women have neatly styled hair and all men be freshly shaven? That kind of dress code is fine for a workplace, but not a mid-level restaurant you're paying to be at.

I'm just wondering what some people are wearing there to make them feel they have to post a dress code...are people dining out in lingerie or what, because you know there had to be someone or a few someones that were dressed noticeably different/provocatively for this to become an issue at a hookah bar.

This is very simply a case of "my business, my rules". It's a pretty good bet the majority of current patrons dress decent and enough of them complained that the owner(s) decided a dress code was needed. The ones complaining about the new rules can either step up or step out permanently. They aren't asking anyone to dress up! They are simply asking you not to dress like you are looking to shag, get shagged, or got lost on your way to the shelter...

The one part that bothers me is bra straps. I mean, if I wear a tank top I'm not dressed inappropriately, but my straps will show. I'm small chested but what if I wasn't? Yeah, you'd see a lot more cleavage. Not showing underwear or being in a bathing suit I totally understand, but you can't change a person's body type. I go to family friendly restaurants (have worked in them) and there is nothing wrong with a tank top and seeing the bra straps. That's too far.

I guess if they want to cater only to the over 70 set, they're welcome to do so. They're the only people I can think of who would actually eat food from a placed called the "Turkey Leg Hut". ...///... It's Texas, though. We used to go for brunch in Dallas on Sundays sometimes. As we drove in to town on the 114, there was a strip of massage parlors, porn stores, peep shows, and flat out brothels. We timed it so that everyone was in church when we got to the restaurant and the sex shops were relatively quiet. AFTER church, the parking lots of those places were a crammed full. "Religious" assholes getting their rocks off before they went home to watch football.

I disagree with this. Regardless of the eatery or event that you're going to, you should dress according to the venue that you will be attending. Does a fine-dining restuarant have the right to turn you away because you're not meeting their dresscode with your flip-flops and cargo pants? If you're going to an events dinner, shouldn't you be wearing something according to the exclusiveness of the occasion? Yes, there are some terrible dress codes out there that are completely unneccessary, but you should at least specify which one (such as if you disagree with this one), rather than generalising all dress codes in one go.

These seem targeted to a particular demographic. Someone probably threw this together in haste after a few comments from some Kens and Karens, and did not bother to run it by someone who perhaps has a higher culture quotient. I'm actually surprised they didn't get into hair requirements. All they had to say was that the requirements are business casual. It's hard to understand what family values are under assault by a "du-rag". Let me guess: no BLM tee shirts, amirite?

Lol durags aren't family friendly? Huh?? The only valid thing I see as far as their family-friendly excuse is the shorts and cutouts that don't fully cover the booty. Other than that, they should prpbably just clarify that they want to shift to a more upscale atmosphere and come off the "family" excuse. And just take the flak that comes with that language because that's truly what it is...like, what's more family friendly than being completely relaxed in your house shoes 🤭

This reads as if the owners "found" religion. They won't have to worry in a state like Texas. They'll replace their club atmosphere supporters with bible thumpers so no real monetary impact. The real impact will be more ironic than anything else because the bible thumper business gained will actually be the same club business lost. The only difference is that they'll go, as a fake form of themselves, there after some form of "church".

They're a private business, they are free to impose a dress code the way patrons are free to spend their money elsewhere.

Absolutely! Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to. We need to get back to being respectful of each other, be kind to each other, make other people happy, sometimes at the expense of ourselves.

They do sell tanks tops that will cover bra straps and dont show cleavage. One has to try these things on to find the one that fits properly, not just grab one from the pile and 'whatevs'...

Because butt shorts, revealing clothing, ripped jeans and baggy clothes aren't neat-casual clothing which is the image the restaurant is going for. This isn't about taste, it's about image.

I'm usually on the side of the business, which has to implement rules because so many people lack a sense of propriety. This one, though, does give me "club" atmosphere belief, not a family restaurant. Not a place where people dress nice.

Hmmm. There seems to be an elephant in the room that was not addressed in the article. This dress code sounds suspiciously like it's written to enable the restaurant to make it easier for them to exclude black customers.
