Assignments come in various shapes and sizes. And while reading and watching is a great way to learn, there are others with a more hands-on approach that you learn better by doing.

Well, one very hands-on assignment has been making headlines on the internet recently. Turns out, a class in this one Texas school was assigned to live out a set of chivalric rules for one full day, and it caused a bit of a stir among a number of people.

So, an English teacher at the Shallowater High School in northwest Texas gave an assignment whereby senior students were given a list of Rules of Chivalry to follow for one day. The aim of this assignment was to show how women were treated as inferiors under this medieval code.

The assignment functioned as a checklist of the things that each student had to perform in line with the Code of Chivalry and then an adult witness had to put a signature next to the objective to prove that it actually happened. Objectives differed between the guys and girls.

And this one hands-on assignment—where students had to act out chivalric virtues—had everyone talking

In the guys’ list, people could find things like assisting ladies to seat themselves or rise from their seats, standing up whenever a lady comes into the room, and paying for them if taking them out for the evening.

Likewise, the ladies also got a list that included things like dressing in a feminine way that would “please the men,” walking behind men, never criticizing them, and cleaning up after their men. And many people were not cool with how sexist this assignment has turned out.

“I really don’t think it was the teacher’s intention to have it be such a sexist lesson,” said Hannah Carreon, one of the seniors in the school. “There were girls that were excited to get to do this finally and get to dress up.”

But there were many who did feel very uncomfortable with it, and the teacher knew that it might get some flak, so she also allowed students to write a one-page essay on the topic instead.

Apparently, this assignment was an annual thing, and in previous years, the teacher would also hand out written disclaimers to parents and teachers explaining the project and its purposes.

The problem was that many found it sexist and were thus uncomfortable with it

Though the assignment had always been viewed negatively, causing controversy, it was this year that it actually caused serious backlash with a number of parents complaining how the topic of sexism in history could be taught in significantly better ways than this. The assignment was thus cancelled.

But it didn’t end here. A picture of the assignment was posted online and began circulating among a number of parent groups, where journalist Brandi D. Addison Davis stumbled upon it. She shared it on her Twitter, leading to even more criticism of the school.

The boys got a rule list too, which didn’t look as bad as the female version

As you’d guess, many online were angry about this, calling the assignment wrong and horrific. Some said that role play is a good tool for teaching, sure, but this particular assignment ran the risk of reinforcing the wrong things, and there are many other ways these historical lessons can be taught.

Others suggested that it could have turned out to be an OK assignment if the roles were reversed the next day, giving a chance for both sides to act out the Rules of Chivalry.

Though the assignment is now cancelled, it still found itself on the internet where people weren’t happy about it

Yet others were in support of this idea, saying that they don’t see the big deal with this—everyone got to participate in history as it was, and everyone is aware of what the right thing is.

Anita Herbert, school district superintendent, addressed the backlash, saying that the assignment was reviewed and despite the historical context, it did not reflect the values of the district and the community.

For all those comments that said it's how they learn history.... if it is that innocent, then assign the boys to fulfill the role of the women and vise versa. Everyone still learns.

i actually think that could be a really good assignment. on day one, do the "stereotypical" gender roles and have students follow those rules. on day two, switch it. then see how the students feel about the fairness of each set of rules.

Professional historian (Tudor-era England) weighing in here. These assignments don't actually reflect behavior in the middle ages, and mix up upper-class and lower-class roles. For instance, only servants walked behind or with heads constantly bowed, and ladies were under no obligation to bring food or drink to "their" men. Again, that's a servant's job. Ladies sewed, embroidered, or engaged in "delicate" tasks. Food service was NOT among those. Clothing and behavior was strictly regulated. None of this "pleasing to the men" stuff. I don't know where the teacher got the "rules" for this assignment, but it wasn't from historical sources. Sounds more like TV, honestly. I'm a Texan, btw. As for "this is what history was like," when I was in school, my teacher held a slave auction where yes, the black kids were auctioned off. There's no place for this in education, especially since all it does is serve to humiliate everyone except for those in power.

My high school did this back in 1990. But only the men-being-chivalrous-toward-women part. Some of the guys couldn't be bothered, but one kid went above and beyond. He was a shy kid, and the assignment allowed him to shine. He had LOTS of girls crushing on him after that LOL.

And we all know where they get this s**t. "Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet." 1 Timothy 2:11-12 "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands." Ephesians 5:22-24

Did I read that right? Look, it is one thing if they had went over it and pointed out where they are wrong and how it should be equal, but full on practicing sexism?!?! I so would call the district on the teacher and my mom would (I am 11) rip the teacher a new butt hole! What kind of teacher does that!?!? What the heck?!?!

While we are at the topic of learning history, how about an assignment of re-enacting concentration camps, the rape of the Sabin women, or Salem witch hunt? I am pretty sure that the tutor who came up with this bullshit would have no problem to write out instruction for all of these.

They didn't "teach" anybody to do anything. The point of the damn assignment was to explain how unfair stuff was in medieval times.

I heard about this and was initially outraged, but I think there is a valid lesson in there, but it is being handled poorly. In a time when girls are still struggling to go to school without being sexualized and it is becoming more and more evident, the lesson should have been adjusted.

Yeah, it doesn't seem *that* bad - students can opt for an essay instead, and that's a huge step. The question of context matters a lot too, though. Are they taught that this is NOT acceptable in modern day and why? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Swapping the next day would be a big impact too. And, I do suspect this assignment is problematic for trans and nonbinary students, but they could also allow students to choose which gender to start with... if there are any out-of-the-closet queer kids in Texas. There are issues here, but I think a lot of people are overreacting, too.

The assignment could have been tweaked quite a bit. If they just maybe put respect and maybe a little for effort it would have been okay. But knowing women had to do all of that is just disgusting. Women should be treated with more respect and shouldn't have to clean after a man. Unless they were actually incapable of doing it. (EX: Broken leg, arm, or other part. And/or Paralyzed)

I hate to go real dark real fast, but my immediate concern was that the boys would try to use this to their advantage. Being the paranoid little idiot I was, I would probably be scared that I'd be raped that day because of the whole "submission to men" thing.

it's just so annoying that there has to be a whole dress code that is manly for girls. The teachers are always like "cover up" or "that's too distracting" etc... like no. teach boys to be respectful and educate your son. It isn't the girl's fault that your son can't stop looking. Women shouldn't have to cover up, just because someone can't be respectful. Also the dress code is just dumb in general. For example no wear spaghetti straps, no wearing ripped jeans, etc?? like, what???

Talk about chivalry in history class, yes. These lists should be on the projector as part of the early lecture on what chivalry was. Maybe have a couple students demonstrate it, OK. But no, going all day with it it just too much. After the demonstration, continue the discussion of everyone’s impressions and opinions about it. The last part of the class should be devoted to both discussing how far we have come AND how much further we have to go. THAT’S how you teach about chivalry.

Whoever came up with this failed their history class, because this random list has absolutely nothing to do with the actual concept of chivalry in the middle ages. You wouldn't have found any noblewoman dead anywhere near a kitchen, for example.

I don't see the benefit of having to "act" it out in real life. Can't they just read, watch a documentary in class, maybe let the students wear medieval clothes if they wish for the day, & have a conversation instead of belittling women in the 21st century. That may have been how it was back then but what is the point in the reenactment of these behaviors? I am sure the male & female students will understand gender roles were very different back then than they are today - they're not stupid.

This is an activity that can show how things were and how things should no longer be. They can do this as a role reversal after. This has potential! I think this has benefits for showing both sides, well, both sides. But imagine if it were for Black people. I think if this were done, it only can be done in role reversal. But I think they're really only beneficial for a group that shows they need this. You can't give this project to a room of people who are apart of a feminist group. If the students in the class are really progressive and have a deep undersranding, then it would be meaningless.

personally, it would be a good assignment if it wasn't as sexist as it is. yes, I see that he didn't intend for it to be sexist. But think of the males who might take advantage of how the females are instructed to behave. Then how can a female properly say no? Although, I do believe that it shouldn't be practiced. Aren't we supposed to focus on the great gender equalities that should be the great changes that are happening, like the gender equalities happening rather than recreating what has happened in the past? Also, what about the students with no gender?

I have a thought in my mind ... a day, just one day, where the old sexist weird standards are applied - and let the teachers wait for the students to come up with how effed up this is. But then, again, some teacher will find this and not find any wrongery in it, and therefore would deprive it from any effect, but just enact some fifties-lookalike and fifties-thinkalike week and, on friday with da Boyz, will mourn the patriarchy they just had a little glimpse of being on the winning side of it, and totally missing the point of the entire thing. This takes a stupid teacher ... I visited 7 schools - never were these rare.

People who say this is assignment is sexists...Duh! That's the point! It would be even better if they switched roles the next day. That way they all understand from both points of view. If males use it to their advantage, then that's a different problem. It's like reading about the holocaust and giving people ideas that it's ok to be racist. This assignment can be taken as "wow! That was messed up! I can see why women are still upset till this day about not having the same rights as men." "Or wow! I see why feminism got started."

If you don't learn history you are doomed to repeat it. I'm assuming afterwards the teacher would have discussion or write ups about the experience, or switch the rioles the next day. I'm sort of shocked at how negative the reaction was. Of course it was sexist! I'm assuming that was the whole point.

Sorry, I cannot understand it to be made into such a huge drama. I actually think this is a pretty good way of showing kids how far society has come. Most kids take all the freedom we have for granted, not knowing it didn't used to be this way. So making them go through a day in these roles would give a huge understanding. And the chance to then talk about how it made them feel. And then give a lesson of how we got from there to our society now. I don't see this as sexist. I see that it's a way of showing the huge step. And maybe even letting them find the little small things we still do that come from back then and where society still needs to work on

No it wasn't. They weren't instructed to be submissive to girls. They weren't instructed to walk with their heads down. The problem is that girls were taught to be submissive There is sexism against them though, like the part that stated they had to pay. Still, I think that the girls' expectations were worse.

All the teacher was doing was trying to show the student what it was like in MEDIEVAL TIMES. The teacher does not live this way herself. They aren't teaching to be submissive to men because we all know that's not how it works. People get so offended and can't take two seconds to realize it's a history lesson. Y'all are really overthinking it. It was a simple lesson.

i actually think that could be a really good assignment. on day one, do the "stereotypical" gender roles and have students follow those rules. on day two, switch it. then see how the students feel about the fairness of each set of rules.

And/or Paralyzed)

it's just so annoying that there has to be a whole dress code that is manly for girls.

Martha Meyer
