Professional historian (Tudor-era England) weighing in here. These assignments don't actually reflect behavior in the middle ages, and mix up upper-class and lower-class roles. For instance, only servants walked behind or with heads constantly bowed, and ladies were under no obligation to bring food or drink to "their" men. Again, that's a servant's job. Ladies sewed, embroidered, or engaged in "delicate" tasks. Food service was NOT among those. Clothing and behavior was strictly regulated. None of this "pleasing to the men" stuff. I don't know where the teacher got the "rules" for this assignment, but it wasn't from historical sources. Sounds more like TV, honestly. I'm a Texan, btw. As for "this is what history was like," when I was in school, my teacher held a slave auction where yes, the black kids were auctioned off. There's no place for this in education, especially since all it does is serve to humiliate everyone except for those in power.

While we are at the topic of learning history, how about an assignment of re-enacting concentration camps, the rape of the Sabin women, or Salem witch hunt? I am pretty sure that the tutor who came up with this bullshit would have no problem to write out instruction for all of these.

I heard about this and was initially outraged, but I think there is a valid lesson in there, but it is being handled poorly. In a time when girls are still struggling to go to school without being sexualized and it is becoming more and more evident, the lesson should have been adjusted.

Talk about chivalry in history class, yes. These lists should be on the projector as part of the early lecture on what chivalry was. Maybe have a couple students demonstrate it, OK. But no, going all day with it it just too much. After the demonstration, continue the discussion of everyone’s impressions and opinions about it. The last part of the class should be devoted to both discussing how far we have come AND how much further we have to go. THAT’S how you teach about chivalry.

I don't see the benefit of having to "act" it out in real life. Can't they just read, watch a documentary in class, maybe let the students wear medieval clothes if they wish for the day, & have a conversation instead of belittling women in the 21st century. That may have been how it was back then but what is the point in the reenactment of these behaviors? I am sure the male & female students will understand gender roles were very different back then than they are today - they're not stupid.
