This Online Community Is All About People Who Don’t Prioritize Safety, As If They’re Immortal (New Pics)
Like Bored Panda explained in our first article on this online community, r/OSHA is a subreddit devoted to a really noble cause—reminding people to stay safe at work. It borrowed its name from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and is collecting pictures of folks who are really pushing their luck, trying to deter others from trying similar stunts. We're talking drivers who aren't securing the load, ladders that are tied together using hair and hope, and such intricate wire mazes, even electricity can't navigate them. So get out your safety goggles and keep scrolling, the pics are wild!

One of the moderators of the subreddit, -eDgAR-, told Bored Panda in an earlier interview that above all, the online community is meant to be lighthearted, where everyone can come for a laugh at how ridiculous some people can be. "It's not meant to be a place for serious discussions about safety, although, often times comments can actually get into great analysis about the issues shown in posts, which is great," they said.
"We don't get a crazy amount of posts like other subreddits and have seen days with only a handful of posts. If you're one of the lucky first chances are you'll get to the top," -eDgAR- explained.
The Sign I Keep On My Workbench
This sign hung in the Sandia National Labs (high-energy physics) in the 80s; might be the original.
'Cause they looked into the laser with the other eye already.
Load More Replies...But even though this subreddit doesn't take itself seriously, its photos do represent a broader problem. There were 5,250 fatal work injuries in the US in 2018, with falls being the leading cause of death. A year before, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported 5,147 workplace fatalities.
The United States consistently outpaces other industrialized nations in workplace fatalities: here, the average rate for these incidents has hovered at 3.5 deaths for every 100,000 workers over the past decade while workplace fatality rates in the UK have remained under 1.0 death for every 100,000 workers over the past decade, and under 1.5 deaths for every 100,000 workers on average for the 15 earliest member states of the European Union.

Patient: "But... I don't... I don't know if I should. Can't I just come in to see the doctor tomorrow?" Me: "Sir, you might not be around tomorrow if you don't call an ambulance today." **Patient DID follow my suggestion... Heart attack confirmed. 3 blocked arteries. Emergency surgery. ICU... In the steel industry, for example, several workers die every year from a fatal fall, and the occupation is regularly cited as one of the most dangerous in the US. Even though
Sadly, Mike Wright, director of health, safety and environment at the United Steelworkers union, told The Guardian that all of these deaths are preventable. "I've seen a lot of fatalities where you walk in and you think: 'I can't believe this didn't happen 10 years ago," Wright said.

The glass is OK, I'm more worried that the other side of the ladder will slip down the wall.
Load More Replies...According to him, fatalities most often happen in shifts where supervision is lacking in cases where routine safety procedures are ignored, such as workers rushing to fix a broken piece of equipment to return to production as soon as possible.
Wright explained that many fatal falls are underreported because of how coroners rule on causes of death. If a cardiac event was included as part of a workplace fall, OSHA will often refuse to code these incidents as workplace fatalities even if the United Steelworkers union argues the victim would have survived the cardiac event otherwise.

I count 33 boards high, assume the stack is 8'6" wide (standard flatbed trailer) and the boards are 8' long, and assuming they're Douglas Fir at 33lbs/cubic foot, that pile of lumber weighs just shy of 9000 lbs. Standard 4" winch straps have a working load limit of 5000lb. Being 8', there must have been a minimum of 2 straps. You couldn't make a practical headache rack that could handle absorbing that much kinetic energy.

On The Brink Of Decapitating Someone
This would not decapitate them. It'd just kill them with blunt force trauma to the head.
"Oh Yes Lets Lock The Emergency Stop Button"
Seriously, though... When you have weird regulations you have to do something. For instance, when regulations say you need to have an emergency stop button for a hospital's emergency generator outside the hospital... And if anyone touches it at the wrong time 50 people on artificial life support will die.
Makes sense - like locking away a public access AED so it's not vandalised and can be ready for use. But for the love of all things sensible, don't use a lock requiring a physical KEY. You need to find the right person, they need to know where the key is (assuming it's not in a key safe requiring another layer of security), that kind of lock shown is notorious for getting rusty (there's a little hole where you can squirt oil if you need to because the insides can rust), and meanwhile whatever disaster requiring the button is getting progressively worse.
Load More Replies...Actually makes sense. The button gets locked AFTER it was pressed. So no idiot can start whatever it stopped while the maintanance guy got his arms in there
On the bright side, it's a Master lock, so breathing on it will open it.
- Who's got the key?!? - Marion... - Who is Marion?!? - He used to work here couple of years ago...
In this case, unlike the hospital example, I'd rather deal with turning it back on than not being able to turn it off.
Superhuman strength in an emergency wouldn't let that lock deter. Plastic smashes into bits.
And those backup generators must have, per fire code, the emergency fuel shutoff OUTSIDE the generator room. Just like the one pictured... And if the hospital.is on its generator, guess what happens when someone decides it will be funny to press this button... Or, alternately, they press the button and nobody notices before city power goes out?

Field expedients are always more common than one would think. If the pallets are tied together with ropes, or fastened to the forks, this is fine. Note the rope holding the pallets together. We can only assume that there is another one 180% on the other side. If not, you are putting your a**e into the hands of others. Not my idea of safety.

The bar isnt there to protect you. It's to protect against the airflow being blocked by someone placing something in front of the fan. This happens quite a lot with chillers in restaurant kitchens. Somebody pushes a trash can up against it, and then there's no air flow.

this could be a loss due to fire or something. the car might have been been there before the fire. Accidents are almost always due to management issues. Either people don't have the equipment or training to do the job safely, or they're told to hurry and just do it, or there's a culture of not being allowed to stop and say I won't do it, or there's no maintenance plan, etc etc.
