The Brits started it when they kidnapped US citizens to press-gang into the British Navy, which was considered an infringement of maritime rights. The longstanding issues about territory re: the US northern border were ongoing. The Brits in fact interfered in what is considered US territory (now the Great Lakes states essentially) to prevent further expansion of the former colonies. If you ask the First Nations, they'll probably agree that *both* sides were expansionist a-holes. Madison declared war primarily, however, due to maritime violations. The annexation of Canada has to be regarded not just as a single cause of war, but an ongoing issue set against the context of British fears of US land power after the Louisiana Purchase, and US fears of re-domination by the Britis. FYI, I grew up on the US-Canadian border, so I learned *both* histories. British meddling in territory treaty-ceded to the US ring a bell? Get your own history straight.

Since the original comment used "we" to mean Brits past and present, I used "we" for Americans in the same sense. And Brexit isn't too impressive, either, just a quick FYI from the world.

My condolences... I've just stopped speaking to people who voted for Brexit so I don't know if they're still in denial and think it's going well (like @Devil's Advocate) - or have changed their tune. Thankfully most of my friends are remainers.

Brexit is going very well, thank you, even the remoaners have pretty much given up moaning after the pandemic highlighted everything that's wrong with the EU. Even the USofA understands you can't rule that big an area with only one set of rules, and come on the EU has even managed to now piss off SWITZERLAND, the most laid back country out there!

What did the British achieve, exactly, besides leaving half the world poor and dependent on foreign aid and loans? Watching Americans and British people--two colonial powers that built their wealth on the exploitation of others--argue over which is better just shows how similar the US and UK (and much of the rest of Europe) are. Cut from the exact same cloth. Crazy that anybody here thinks this silly bickering makes their country look better.

Well if you want to argue with a published historian who only presented on the American Revolution at a conference in August, lets have it. Actually it was a series of reasons, from a dispute over certain taxes that dates back to 1722, which spiraled into opposition to other crown taxes. Further disputes arose over the colonies wanting to elect their own governors like they did their own legislators and they wanted their colonial representative (each colony appointed one to represent their interests in London) to be in Parliament and to elect proportional representation from the colonies to Parliament. Things started breaking down in 1771, which hit rock bottom in Boston in 1773 when Crispix Attucks (A Black Man immortalized in the Poem "First to Die for Freedom" and several other were killed by BritishTroops. In 1775 the first battle broke out over attempts by the british to seize colonists arms in violation of the 1689 British Bill of Rights, in fact Lord Howe only obeyed this order

reluctantly because he did not think they were in the right, despite the Crown argueing that the Bill of Rights did not apply in the colonies. This action would later horrify many in the UK including Edmund Burke who defended the Colonist armed insurrection, and thinkers like Adam Smith as well. After Concord the British were pushed back into Boston and the Colonists laid seige to Boston, shortly other skirmishes arose across the colonies fearing British overreach. And then from there everything went as most people think. However until 1778 the colonies tried to make peace with Britain on terms of

full rights as Englishmen, full representation in Parliament, and more. After 1778 they gave up on that idea. Yes the declaration of independence was in 1776, but they still had hope for reunification after that. In 1783 the treaty of Paris was reached and British left their last hold out point, fully humilated on the world stage. Don't argue with a professional historian here
