For a lot of us, traveling is associated with fun activities, unseen places, good food, and drinks. But what do we think about the actual part of traveling: for example, taking a bus, train, or plane? How happy do we become when we think about that unavoidable part of the trip? A lot of us might refrain from joy when it comes to waking up early and rushing to an airport, standing in long lines for security, and then being squeezed next to other passengers, very often not being able to find a comfortable position. A very similar thing happened to one Reddit user who needed to catch a flight at the last minute. After their trip, the person had to ask people online if what they did during the flight was wrong or if they did the right thing by standing their ground.

More Info: Reddit

No matter how much we’ve missed traveling over the last few years, it’s still painful to think about all those hours spent in a cramped seat on a plane

Image credits: Jetstar Airways (not the actual image )

The author of the post shared that they had to take a flight that was more than 3 hours long. Because it was at the last minute, they didn’t have a chance to book a seat with more room for their legs because of how tall they are. This became somewhat of a problem because a woman sitting in front of them decided to recline her seat. At first, the passenger addressed the woman and asked her politely to raise her seat up a bit so they wouldn’t be pressed. However, the other passenger just said “no” and kept the seat reclined.

Reddit user decided to share their experience after having to sit behind a woman who prioritized her comfort over others

The person first approached the woman politely and asked her to raise her seat up so they could sit more comfortably

Because of this reason, OP decided to go and report this incident to a flight attendant who then approached the woman and after their short talk, she raised her seat up. But this didn’t end just there, as she then turned around and called the passenger “an a**hole,” which made them think that maybe what they did was wrong.

However, the woman refused to return her seat to its original position, so what the author of the story did next was to go and find a flight attendant

This situation which perhaps is also relatable to many others started a heated discussion online. Some people were stating that the author of the story shouldn’t feel bad about asking the woman to raise her seat up because it’s common decency to check if others are okay with you reclining your chair. However, there were users who found the person to be at fault. Despite them approaching the woman gently, their politeness ended when the woman said “no” and they didn’t take this answer. Instead of accepting it, they decided to involve a flight attendant.

What is your take on this situation? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

After the the situation was resolved, the woman was unhappy and even called OP “an a**hole”

Perhaps you wonder if there is a way to finally decide who is right in this situation. According to a magazine called Travel + Leisure, certain etiquette rules and manners also exist in the air. Despite the realization that if the button for reclining your seat exists, you can use it, it’s suggested that it can only be done if it’s really needed. Try to recline in a way that would make you feel comfortable, but not invade too much of another person’s space.

The author of the story became confused after the outcome, so they asked people online what they think about this situation

When you’re on a short flight that is taking place during the day, it would be better to stop yourself from adjusting your seat too much, as people who sit next to you might be using the tray to put their laptops or other important things needed for work. By reclining your seat without any warning, you also risk spilling their food or beverage over them. This leads to another very important tip. Try to avoid heated arguments or fights with other passengers while on a plane because you never know where this might lead and what kind of damage it might cause. Other than that – bon voyage!

This story divided users online into two groups: those who believed that OP wasn’t the one to blame and those who thought that the woman had every right to say “no” to them

I mean, I can see both sides, but if someone reclines a seat back so far that it's hitting my knees, that's when I let my ADHD leg bouncy thing run amok.

I mean, literally though, who would be inconsiderate enough to recline their seat back to where it's touching another passenger? That's weird.

I have scoliosis and it's actually quite painful for me to sit with the seat up. But I would have explained that if it was me. Again, airlines need to add more space, people shouldn't be in this situation

um... whats wrong with the people thinking OP is TA and should have gotten a seat wit extra leg room? Did they miss the part with the last second business trip? For me that means his company probably paid for it and did not have a choice for the seat. And the plane was probably fully booked too. And whats the deal with the woman being "uncomfortable"? Can people not sit normal straight for a few hours anymore? 3 hours is not that long.

Airplane seats shouldn't recline. I'm 5'5 and it's uncomfortable when the person in front of me reclines.

You're 5'5" and don't realize what a relief that 3" of recline can be to someone's back. So when someone comes "within inches of your knees" you go out of your way to make contact with the seat. Seems petty.

I think the key is she did it for the flight attendant, so why is he TA? All he did was explain his situation to someone who might be able to help. Did the flight attendant come back with a gun, nope, they just pointed out that she was an inconsiderate sack of potatoes and she relented. If she is angry at anyone at that point it should be herself, she waffled and she hated it. She hated being seen as inconsiderate, which she was.

His issue is with the airline, not the passenger. People may not like it, but no one is obligated to do anything you ask of them. You can break it down to infinity and argue semantics, but this is really the bottom line.

I think ESH, except maybe the flight attendant. The recliner sucks because she didn't say yes (just because you *can* doesn't mean you aren't an AH when you do). The OP sucks because he didn't accept a No (people might be AH if they don't accept a polite request, but that doesn't allow you to make them be nice). And mostly the airline sucks for putting their passengers in this situation on a regular basis.

For all the people thinking "she's paid for the seat, she should get to use it" - I'm 5'7" and I've had the seat the seat in front of me resting against my knees. I've had the person in front of me recline to the point where I basically couldn't use the tray. I've nearly had my laptop broken when I was doing work on a flight with the laptop on the tray and the person in front suddenly reclined their chair, causing it to collide with my laptop and making a loud cracking sound. Sure the person in front has the right to use that space, but I also have the right to use the space that I've paid for.

I have never had problems with people like that, they are always sorry, but sometimes instead of asking their seat simply doesn't recline at all because it immediately stops at my kneecaps, that always touch the front seat, but I also know the rude lady would be put into sitting position because I would just push her seat with my legs

I was recently on a flight behind a woman like this. I'm only 5'1 so I never have any issues with the small spaces in airplanes, but the woman in front of me reclined her seat so far back that even my knees were being crushed. She tried to recline her seat even further at which point, to her annoyance, I pushed back with my knees. She ended up giving me a very nasty look. So I get OP, even if they are way taller than me. Some people really just don't give a fck about the people around them. If there's someone behind me, I never recline my seat or otherwise only a little bit and make sure that the person behind me is okay.

I stopped reading the judgements bc comprehensive reading seemed to be hard for the people reacting. OP already said it was a last-minute business trip and the extra room seats were booked, yet people are saying OP is TA for not booking a seat with extra room in advance, therefore, all those reactions are stupid and inaccurate, if anything, the people saying OP is TA for not booking in advance are TA, because they didn't read what was said C:

6'3" here. My solution to this problem is when I take my seat, I make sure that my knees are pressed firmly against the seat in front of me (not hard to do). I wait until the person tries unsuccessfully to recline and gives up. Then scoot back in my seat and enjoy the flight. If they are particularly aggressive in trying to recline, I let out an audible "ouch!" which normally gets the point across

How is anyone reclining their seats in coach more than a 20 degrees?! I know it's not possible for everyone, but if one musts fly and there's a chance they need more room, perhaps spending the extra money on a higher class may be worth the money to avoid being uncomfortable. Especially on long flights. But this wasn't a long flight.

a 3 hour flight is long? Try being stuck on a 14 hour flight in economy. I'm not tall, but I like to have space, and I get very frustrated easily, since I'm autistic, so you can imagine how that might have felt. xP Sometimes it's worth paying extra for business class if you can. Or even premium economy (which some flights have) that give a bit of extra room.

We both paid for a cheap seat. I personally have to recline for back issues. If you want, need more room, pay for it. The amount seats recline is part of what is paid for. You can't expect someone to get less than what they paid for so you can get more. Sorry

I can't believe how many people in the original thread and here on BP think it's okay to just say no to someone asking for a simple favor. Particularly when everyone is uncomfortable in those coach seats, but a very tall person would be doubly comfortable. I'm only 5 foot 2 and coach is uncomfortable for me, so I can't imagine how it feels to be 6'5, sitting in coach, with an a*****e in front reclining their seat fully. She sounds like a b***h.

Allow me, a tall woman to chime in! This has absolutely happened to me at a few points! Normal sized people end up having less leg room when those seats go back, what makes you think we have room to spare? The world isn't built for us so the least people in the front can do is check. My dad is tall, has bad knees, this woman in front of him on a flight refused to put her seat back even a few inches. Her traveling companion tried but I spent my entire 3 hour flight with my knees jammed to the back of the seat to prevent her. I heard her grumbling the entire time. When this 5 foot nothing woman stood up to grab her luggage and had to crane her head to look at me, the look of shame on her face was glorious and I have no regrets. Yeah, you paid for comfort, but so did we. Again, the world isn't built for us, we already have a hard time, we try not to make your life difficult, so don't do it to us. To sum it up? Check if the person behind you minds!

NTA. This doesn't sound like some that should even be worth debating - making the people around you miserable, just because the features of the plane, traine, car, allow you to? Because you paid for it? Wonder how these people would like me removing my motorcycle's muffler and drive by their house every hour through the entire weekend ... I paid for my bike ... I am able to remove the muffler, have done so countless times (because it's in the way, or to get it repaired when it had finally gotten a leak that resulted in massive misfiring, which I didn't want to impose on people, although I paid for the gas), also it's pretty easy, ... so, you know ... I paid for my means to torture you, and I can torture you, and a deaf person wouldn't mind, ... Seriously? Imposing a major discomfort to someone for a slight upgrade in my own comfortable state is not right, it's about the balance of it. Also, I'm pretty sure I could win a wrestling match against my cat ... I pay for all her stuff, too.

Although the woman refusing to move up her seat was rude, this is a problem the airlines create! This is not a passenger problem. We need to point the finger is the right direction.

Reality is that distance between seats on a aircraft is known as the "pitch". In 1972 an Boeing 737 had 115 seats as its configuration, that same aircraft is now configured with approximately 135 seats. Same physical space, but the pitch has been changed to maximize passengers. Each generation is larger than the last, but airlines no longer look at client comfort, rather solely at profit. The fault is with the airline, not the passengers.

Leo Anderson

Are you sure it's the same plane? While it is possible for airlines to fly a fifty year old plane it's not likely. And the fuselage of the 737 made today is probably much longer.

And that is called Airplane Etiquette. It's literally how you are supposed to do it. People seem to forget all about plane etiquette because we live in a world full of rude people now days. My grandpa would be shocked at peoples behavior today, as he was a pilot. Lost him in a training flight when his plane malfunctioned sadly. But I flew with him all the time as a little girl. (Actually, his plane went down on my mom's birthday, shes 60 now and still doesn't celebrate on that day, and I was suppose to go that day, but mom held me back for her birthday) No one acted like this then though. It's also a lack of compassion for others, and sad to see people act this way.

Stupid Engineers. They are the AH's. When the seat reclines it should just slide the a*s forwards. Consume users own knee space to go horizontal, not steal from another. Problem solved. NEXT!!

It's not their fault either. When airplanes are originally designed there are far fewer rows of seats (and the windows actually line up with the rows) When airlines purchase the planes, they either order them without seats, or remove the factory seats and put in a dense cluster of smaller seats so they can cram more people on. Blame the Airlines, not the aerospace engineers.

Love all the people goin "you should have gotten a seat with extra leg room." A. Not everyone can afford that B. It's not always an option and the comments about "time convenience" is ridiculous. They were on a BUSINESS flight. That means they probably didn't have a choice to take a later flight because they were needed somewhere at a certain time. C. I think people are forgetting to take one last thing into account. The flight attendant clearly seen the chair as an issue. If not, they would have told OP "sorry, there's nothing we can do about it, they're within rights." I would know, because I've had it happen to me. So if the flight attendant decided the chair was too far back, it probably was. NTA

Whenever I'm in the position of needing accommodations in public, I tell them my situation and suggest some solutions. If this were me, I would ask her politely to either move her seat up or trade seats with me, then tell the flight attendant that my knees are being crushed and ask if they can move me or get her seat off my legs

I totally agreed... I truly think the guy was a bit entitled, as a woman I always notice in flight that "men" have that of think "I am asking so you should abide" .... If I was the guy I would have asked to change seats with her due to the fact that she has the right to lay her chair as much as he had the right to do the same.. my question is, does he usually lays his??? If I was that lady and a flight attendant tell me to sit up straight I would call her an a*****e and not the guy... And for all the people that say "i would kick the seat in front of me, well I doubt you guys actually have a real long flight, if you do such a nonsense you can be placed under arrest and it's also a very ignorant move to do... For all the folks that are defending the guy saying "he did not have a choice at the time of booking" , we all have a choice about everything, maybe not the one we like or can afford, but still is a choice... However, in the end he made it the way he wants, for the needs. Entitled

Seriously, how can anyone side with the lady pressing her seat down on someone's knees?! My ex husband was the exact same height, and it was seriously painful when someone reclined their seat too far. We're not just talking about mild discomfort, but actual pain. Sorry, but I was raised better than this, and all the people calling op an a** are just callous, selfish narcissists! OP, in future, just keep your knees against the back of the seat to prevent them from reclining too far. Once they've settled and given up, relax.

That was a poor approach. A person who bought a ticket has purchased the right to use the seat as it is designed. Would she have been obligated to let the OP use the underseat space in front of her if he asked? Would she have to get someone's permission to lower her food tray? A better approach would have been to say to the woman: "Excuse me, but the space in my seat is very cramped when your seat is reclined. Is there anything I can you to encourage you to raise it? Can I buy you a drink or a snack?"

I think the people in the YTA camp think he's an arsehole because he didn't accept the other passenger's answer. He complained to the flight attendant who made the passenger raise her seat.

A few years ago I was flying from LA to Tokyo and the small woman (maybe 5') in front of me leaned her seat back. I'm 6'3" and I couldn't even open my tray. Fortunately she soon had to go to the lavatory. When she came back I had positioned my knees so that she couldn't recline her seat. She tried several times but I was stubborn and an a*****e. It's a long way from LA to Tokyo.

I up vote you to cancel out at least one down vote. Probably done by people who aren't tall. Who have no idea what it's like being a tall person in a world not built to consider us. Pay for a seat with extra leg room? In all the flights I've had, the planes only have maybe 10 seats at best and are all usually taken up when I go to purchase a seat, I've gotten lucky maybe twice. So yes, we do resort to being "petty assholes" when nobody listens to us repeatedly ask nicely to move the seat. We paid for a seat just like the person in front did, there's a good chance the person in front isn't as tall as us, so why not divide the space? We don't really have any to spare, why take up what we don't have? Traveling is already a miserable experience for tall people, why make it worse?

Is the option to recline part of your ticket that you paid for? How about airlines remove 25% of seats but up goes the price to account for it.

Surely the option to recline is part of what you are paying for when buying your ticket? Suppose they could halve the seats, DOUBLE the space and the ticket price.

That all is just stupid, the person that is tall and the comments... 3h a long flight? Lol hahaha 😂😂😂 i have done flights that have over 11hours, have had issues with the stuck in other countries, have crossed, basically, all the seas and continents and some of the reddit comments saying "you should not back your sit all the way" is probably people that believe 3h is a long flight and unlikely have done international with more than one stop... I have done it all, have even had issues with drunk people, with rude people at the point a marshall had to imprisoned a guy for have kicked my head as he decided to put his feet on top of my seat and head... In real long flights (not a silly 3h) people will lower there seats all the way back, and even if you do not want to do it you will have no choice as you will have no room to you... I also have changed seats to let people be together and refused too when I seen someone untitled... O.P feel entitled to me

It's weird very few people blame the inherent design instead of two humans that clearly cannot get comfortable in said design. No one is an AH except the airlines that expect us to pay extra to sit comfortably or jostle for a semi decent position. I just flew 7 months pregnant and my tray table couldn't clear my belly! Not because of the person in front, either, there's just no room. I just didn't use it and made sure to get a front row seat with more space next time. Also, I did recline as my sciatica flares up badly when sitting upright for long periods. Can we just admit flying is generally terrible for everyone? Tall, short or otherwise?

The airline crams the plane full of seats that they know are uncomfortable. Then they monetize the illusion of being comfortable. The consequences are that customers blame each other for the situation. Meanwhile, the airline has distracted the consumer from the real problem - unrealistic profit margins for the airline made possible by creating a situation where the customer suffers. We should revolt against the airline & show that we are not going to be distracted by corporate manipulations.

I wish a passenger would invade my space like that. OP said he couldn't even put down his tray. Nope too far back. He even asked her politely but she was still being rude. Trust and believe that seat would've gotten off of my knees if it was me. He only asked her to move it just a few inches so it wasn't pressing on his knees after all who wants to pay a lot of money for a seat on an airplane only to have a rude customer invading your personal space and basically being in your lap the entire flight. Everyone is uncomfortable on those flights!!! Everyone gets the same amount of space. What right does this person have asking a stranger to give some of theirs up? I have to tell you I'd rather be flying with my knees touching the seat in front of me than endure the upright position for 3 hours with my chin in my chest! You wanna be mad at someone, be mad at the airline!!!

Unless a person is able to fly 1st class they can count on being uncomfortable for the flight. I feel for the tall passenger, I really do, but I would have kept my seat reclined as well. Although, I would have been nicer about it. When those seats are in the upright position it feels like my head is being bent forward. Everyone gets there assigned space and no one has the right to ask another passenger to give up some of theirs!

But she is demanding he give up his space. After he asks politely. She could have compromised and even though they both still would have been a bit uncomfortable, no one should be so entitled to make another completely uncomfortable just so you can be completely comfortable. That's selfish.

Bless him for being polite about the situation. I'm a whole sack of petty. We all know that the airlines are douche bags for their design of cramming as many seats as possible into limited space and then charging you for every extra bit. Want/need extra leg space... That's extra. Plus size... That's extra. Single mom flying with three kids and want to sit together... That's extra. Anyone who's flown knows this. I would have happily stayed silent and used every opportunity to dig my knees into her back or kick her seat on the way to the bathroom. She wants to be comfortable... So does he. She paid for the exact same space as him. Everyone mentioning "he could have paid for the more spacious seating" and "she could have had back problems and needed to recline." well... Then she could have paid for the more spacious seats too. I'm sorry (not sorry) there is surprising amount of selfish inconsiderate people and she's TA for being one. There could have been a compromise between the two

NTA If someone asked me to put my seat up a bit, I would because I wouldn't be comfortable knowing I was causing someone else discomfort. Technically, the woman did nothing wrong to begin with but her "AH" comment was her being an AH, in my opinion. It sounds like this guy didn't have the option on his seat. He did what he needed to do in order to remain courteous and pain-free. Just my opinion but there seems to be such a lack of empathy and compassion for each other anymore. It's really sad.

She reclined her seat to the point that her seat touched his legs,. That’s where the problem starts for me. Tall, short or inbetween, I don’t care….she should have at least been coiurteous enough to get the seat off of his legs, But, I also have to laugh about them referring to 3 hours as a “long fight”. This isn’t about who has what rights….it’s about human decency, which seems lacking in far too many these days,

Same hight, same problem on flights. I've learned to push my knees up against the chair in front of me for the first 30 minutes of a flight so they simply can't recline, or instantly scream out in pain when they try. And, yes I have had an airplane seat slammed into my kneecaps before. Very painful experience, so if people think I'm an a**hole for doing so, I honestly can live with that.

You could get up a lot, grab the seat back to help you get up, lean over, maybe belch each time, and do the same thing when going back to the seat. When the person in front of you asks you not to do that, just say "No."

Like one commenter said, it's about courtesy. If giving up a little bit if your extra comfort eases a major DIScomfort for someone else, why wouldn't you accommodate them? The guy was even asking nicely. On a side note, if someone reclines their head into my face, I just might have to suffer a "sneezing fit".

Someone else may have commented this, but it reminds me of the movie Last Holiday with Queen Latifah. Her rant about the airline she used was spot on. Her character was able to purchase a better seat, but most airlines overbook, so most people don't have that option either.

I try to get an exit aisle, but they're nearly impossible. I fly Southwest with open seating...and yeah, if I don't get the exit aisle (I have 38" long legs) the person in front CANNOT put their seat back. The aisle seat doesn't work because flight attendants do NOT allow ones legs in the aisle for safety reasons. I apologize to whoever is in front of me and look to move rapidly if they're put out, but often the flight is so rapidly filling up that's not an option. It sucks to be tall like this (and I'm a woman), and if anyone DOES try to put their seat back, they just end up with knees pressing into their back. I wish I could shrink...turns out, that's pretty much impossible. 😂

Airlines need to either stop cramming seats in or disable the recline button. Since we KNOW the first one isn't going to happen, that only leaves the second option. If someone reclines into me, they're just going to have to accept that my long legs have nowhere else to go and my kneecaps are going to be embedded in their back for the duration of the flight. I'm not trying to be vindictive. It's just a law of physics: two objects can't share the same space at the same time.

It's interesting how positively surprised people seated behind you react, if you announce to them that you would like to recline and if it's ok for them that and that much. I can recommend to try that before slamming down regardless if the person behind you is eating, using their laptop or very tall.

Had a similar situation on a flight where I was in first class. The woman in front of me reclined her seat all the way back. The seat must have needed maintenance because it literally was in my lap. I couldn't stand up to use the bathroom and there was no way I could work in the space left. I politely asked her to put her seat up just a bit and the guy across from me who saw the situation asked her to do the same. She had a snit that lasted until we got to baggage claim. Her perspective was she paid for first class and should be able to be comfortable, but then so did I and having her hair in my face didn't quite meet the first class experience. I don't even think it was her fault. The seat should not have been able to recline that far. Poor plane maintenance contributes to these on-flight issues.

NTA. Guarantee if the person in front of her reclined their seat to the point it's hitting her knees she would got full tilt to the point they'd probably have the perp removed to shut HER up. I'm picturing you sitting on the floor, leaning against the door. When the flight attendant tells you to return to your seat then tell them there's no way you can sit in it with her reclined. Seriously. 3 hours? You can't sit upright like a decent human for 3 hours? If you have to recline for a 3 hour flight, how do you manage to drive ANYWHERE? I can't imagine how much of an A** she'd be on a 13 hour flight.

Lol this situation happened to me but with quite a bit more drama involved. The man in front of me reclined his seat- banging into my knees and then started telling ME to stop kneeing him in the back. His wife got involved for him actually. I explained I wasn't doing anything - he had reclined his seat into my knees and she looked at my legs. After talking to her husband again she asked me how tall I was?!? lol! I told her and she told me that her husband was just as tall and I asked her if I could possibly be faking having my legs where they were and pointed to them. It was ludicrous. They were clearly drunk and started screaming and yelling and the guy thrashed his seat back-and-forth and he already had a confrontation with the 1st attendant when we 1st boarded. It was outrageous and so stupid! The poor attendants had to get, like, 3 people involved. And THEN! Unrelated to the couple, the person sitting next to them went off on the person sitting next to us later. Mess!

I've been on many flights where my knees only have an inch clearance to the next seat. I'm 5'2"! I've always been extra considerate for the person with long legs behind me. But I've witnessed many people that act privileged. On the flip side, because I'm usually smaller then most, people always assume I don't need the arm rest. By the reasoning some have used, tall people should on buy tickets for the front where there is more legroom. By that reasoning, does that mean shorter people should only ride in couch? Your sense of reasoning is flawed. If we can only buy certain seats based on height, many people are going to be standing on the tarmac. Never mind the tyraid of individuals screaming discrimination.

The woman is 100% the a*****e, and people arguing otherwise are either being disingenuous or are incapable of rational thought. He was polite and unassuming in his attempt to resolve it with her (after all, plenty of flyers don't realize that reclining can inconvenience those behind them) and she selfishly blew him off. When he brought it to the attention of the flight attendant, THEY SIDED WITH HIM. Why is that not compelling enough evidence all by itself? If company policy were what people are saying (ex. "the seat is able to recline that far and she paid for it, therefore she's allowed to and no one can say otherwise") then they would have sided with the woman. The attendant considered that level of recline an invasion of his space and acted accordingly.

Seth
Community Member
2 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Also, regarding the people arguing OP is guilty of a breach of etiquette (ex. "It's not asking nicely if you don't accept no") I'm certain you haven't actually thought this through. Do they think he should have gone straight to the attendant? I doubt it, because in that case they'd say he's the a*****e by not trying to ask her nicely first 🤦 Imagine if you were waiting in line at McDonald's with your young child, and the stranger in front of you is standing on their foot. If you politely ask "excuse me, you're standing on my child's foot, could you please step off?" and they say "No" are you socially expected to accept their answer just because that's the rules for asking nicely? What a crock of absolute nonsense. I can't imagine being that self absorbed and thinking so little of others.

That's where he messed up, he asked. I'm 6'5" and my knees go about a good three inches passed the seat in front of me when I'm in economy/coach. So essentially my knees are pushing through your seat already. Plus the back pocket seat has a metal bar that sits where my knees press against the seat. I typically tell the person in front of me that I'm 6'5" and I'm sorry they got stuck in front of the tall guy but won't be able to recline because my knees are pressed against the seat. There's nowhere to put my legs but in your back. Most people are accommodating but some people will spend the entire flight trying to lean back. I'm like WTF, I'm back here and that hurts. You're literally hitting me with your seat but I'm TA because I couldn't get an exit seat or a seat with more leg room. I can be a prick and start shifting because you will feel all of my movements. You sitting upright an entire flight is nowhere near the amount of pain a tall person feels on a tiny flight.

My BF is 6.5 tall, we similar situation with a woman who reclined her seat and the one for her toddler. This was on a 12 hour flight btw. When we asked if they could at least put one of the chairs up because it was hurting his knees really bad. She declined very rudely, told us "She was human too" and she even reclined her chair even more and kept bouncing against it... (Also hurting herself tbh because she was bouncing her back against his knees 🤷‍♀️) I told my BF that he could try to put his legs on my side, but the divider thing couldn't move (broken) so he was stuck... The toddler was also bouncing, but I'm smaller and he's a kid, so I didn't mind. When we asked a steward for a solution, she said she couldn't do anything. Their were seats in the back (middle section) who were empty, so we asked if maybe we could move (or af least my bf)... She refused and placed 2 other passengers on these seats so they could lay down. Okay humans... 👌 We blame the airline tho. It was a Karen 🤷‍

You can't compare a tall person to a fat person. Only his legs are in the way and that's only if someone reclines. A fat person takes up room on both sides. It really comes down to compassion. Either you care about other people or you care about yourself.

First of all the airline is full of greed and hatred of tall people. They put in extra rows of seats to make more money at the expense of decent , reasonable standard legroom. Then they just assume a taller person is ok to discriminate against by charging 200+ dollars extra to not be tortured on a flight. Not all airlines are like this, but certain ones are.Economy on Japan airlines has plenty of room, but if you book on Japan and they Co op with AA for your domestic flight you can end up wedged knee to hip in complete pain before anyone reclines. They charge extra for an exit row so you can ride without suffering? What makes them assume tall people make more money and should have to pay extra? To a tall person this is NOT about EXTRA comfort. It's about being able to travel without having unnecessary pain inflicted on you because of the greed and prejudices of others, namely the airline.

Honestly, the commenters who said the tall person should have booked a seat with more leg room are illiterate or have never had to book a last minute trip. I never recline my seat anymore. Some flights my knees almost touch the seat ahead of me and I am 5 ft 4 in. Never mind if the seat in front is reclined.

IDK who TA is... but I would have asked the lady to trade seats with me... and if she had said, "No," to this as well, I know I would have spent the next 3 hours getting up and down and pulling myself up by her chair back, which, ordinarily, I am extremely careful not to do, as I hate when it is done to me. Under these circumstances I would NOT have run to "mommy flight attendant" resulting in her shaming the woman into acceding to the request. I would hope, that had I had to ask the FA, I would have asked her to incentivize someone to trade seats. (Preferably somone with a crying baby...lol...j/k) The problem with the comments -labeling either party as an as*hol*-, as I identify it, is that neither view is very compassionate. This seat situation is a microcosm of everything that is wrong in our country today... too many uncompassionate as*hol*es!!!!

I think the tall individual had every right 2 involve a flight attendant. When u ask some1 nicely, & they r 2 dumb 2 follow common sense, 2 raise their seat up, so u can b comfortable- there is nothing wrong with it! Those that thought there was something wrong with it obviously did not consider the person's situation. Boy, selfish people run rampant. I would b on the side of the tall individual.

I am not "tall". 5'9". When the seat in front of me is pushed back it: tilts the tray & spills my coffee, it often cracks my laptop (lost 3 that way) and depending upon the plane, smashes my 8x surgically repaired knee. AIRLINE SEATS SHOULD NOT RECLINE.

Unbelievable! Once the “reclined” passenger was made aware of the person behind her situation, just for the sake of common decency, scoot the seat to the point it wasn’t crushing his knees. Would it have been that inconvenient for her to ask him to let her know how far was enough? That’s called a compromise. But I forget sometimes where I am, so oops, that’s our selfish, zero empathy, it’s all about me society. Humans really suck! And I am baffled at the amount of comments that said the tall guy “should have spent the money and booked a seat with more legroom”. Are you serious?? Can you read?? Maybe before you comment, you should have a big person read it to you and explain what it means. If these are the people in the majority, this planet is doomed! Calgon take me away! Being in hospitality for many years, it never ceases to amaze me on the rudeness, lack of any decency or even common sense for that matter, the selfishness, do ANYTHING to get out of paying for services. Nauseating!

I would’ve laughed if she called me an a*****e. Yes, I understand wanting to recline her seat, but she isn’t alone on the flight. Everyone is stuck on a cramped plane, getting screwed over by the airline companies. Just try to be kind to each other.

Personally I would love to see reclining seats banned or a new law demanding more legroom ( and I am a big fan of the " Knee Defender " ). But, until there is a change in the rules, the passenger in front is within their rights to recline their seats - so grin and bear it or try to sneak a Knee Defender in place before they have a chance. Or, better still, only fly when you can book extra legroom seats...

Have none of you calling him ta ever heard treat others how you want to be treated? I'd have gone to the person in front of her and have them $50 for some instant karma. B***h is lucky she ran into someone so timid. Second she turned and called me a a$$hole I'd have went off her for the sheer entitled nature of expecting the person behind her to be on with her head in their lap. On a recent flight from LA to Paris the woman in front of me pushed it so far down, I think she broke it, and I have really long legs, it was awful. To make matters worse I had paid extra for more leg room but when I got my boarding ticket they’d changed my seat. I then had to push my seat down to even breathe, which made me sad for the person behind me. The Airlines are the problem. They should redesign the lane and the seats.

I think the going to the FA to *get* the passanger to move is TA part. He was in his right to ask, she was in her right to decline. She could have been a little more descript so he didn't feel there was an attitude for example, in which case he may not have needed to even speak to the FA. She doesn't need to explain herself of course, but people generally respond better when a reason is given, there was a social experiment proving this some years back. But overall everyone blaming the airlines really have hit the true problem in all this.

NTA! She was getting in your area and thought that was fine. There's also the reason they make everyone stow their tray tables and RETURN their seats to the upright position. This is not a comfort issue, it's a safety issue for both of them. I guess the OP could have just been rude and knocked the seat in front of him every few seconds. I bet she would have moved her chair back to the upright position. If there were enough turbulence, the OP could have had two broken kneecaps and a chance for a large settlement because no one considered the safety issue!!

3 years. They both could've died of old age already. The thread in Reddit sure was dead when it was dug up from its grave and brought here. But yes, the ones who recline their seats all the way so it touches the person behind are AHs. Some airlines have removed the function from the seats on short flights as a solution

Yes, YTA! You prioritized your own comfort over someone else's, and felt your entitlement was of more value. YTA in every way possible in this scenario. Airline seats don't recline more than a few (or less) inches, so you basically requested she not recline at all. If she wanted a seat that did not recline, she could have saved herself some $$ by picking a less expensive one. It should not matter to her what your situation was. She did not pay for that privilage (nor would she want to). She paid for a seat that reclines.

As a very frequent flyer I can guarantee that this is not true. Plane seats are not supposed to recline more than a couple of inches, but maintenance being as poor as it is many over extend. I have been in the seat behind and also in the seat that doesn't work properly. It happens a lot, and more so in the past few years where the airlines fly their planes without full maintenance all the time. I have been on flights where people had to be moved because it was not possible to put the seat in full upright position for take-off. A lot of in-flight irritation could be eliminated if seats were better maintained. Also no one 'pays for a seat that reclines.' With the exception of the seats in the very back, all plane seats recline. You pay for your seat and your space and so does everyone else who equally has the right to be comfortable in the space that they paid for. If you are not able to tolerate a few hours of sitting up in coach seats, paying for an upgrade is an option.

Well, the only other option to her "no" would have been him standing in the aisle for the majority of the flight, looming over her. Because he certainly wouldn't be fitting in his seat. OR, he propose he and the woman swap seats, so she can recline and he gets a normal, non AH human in front of him. Though I suspect the new person behind her would likewise complain. How about we not be AHs to each other? And don't recline unless it's an overnight flight and everyone is trying to sleep?

I think the way to handle it would be to just use your knees to bounce and jiggle her seat the entire flight, till she lifted it just so she could relax and not be jostled. And if she bitched, tell her- 'I am trying to make myself as comfortable as I can, just as you are... so, here's your choice- we can spend the rest of the flight trying to make each other Un-comfortable, or both of us compromise slightly- you by lifting your seat high enough to not leave my knees to room, and me by being careful not to jiggle your seat when I have to move a bit to ease a muscle-cramp. I'm easy with either option; pick the one you prefer.'

I think it's absurd that so many people didn't read the story through and just insulted op. More importantly, how is being polite rude??? Last minute flight, no time for proper accommodations and no op was not trying to be comfortable at someone else's expense. OP only asked for a bit more room because of the pain caused by the woman's seat pressing on his knees. Regardless he would not be comfortable but having your seat so far back that it's pressing on someone's legs makes the woman's response rude and an ah. How dense can someone get?? Is being so self absorbed a good thing these days? This isn't sexism, racism, ageism, phobia of any sort nor is this self awareness, it is and has always been plain rude and very karen. Air plains are uncomfortable for many reasons , physically hurting someone should not be a discussion, anywhere. OP NTA, simply tring to get by on flight, escalation not his fault.

The amount of people with a “not my problem” attitude astound me. I was not raised that way. If I was that woman I probably would have even apologized to him. “I’m so sorry of course I’ll raise my seat up”. Because he asked her to raise it a few inches not all the way. Which people also seem to overlook. Those seats should not even be able to lean back into other peoples space like that. If this ever happened to me they would feel every single move I made.

I used to be 5 feet 7 and 3/4 inches. I have shrunk to 5 feet 6 inches. Guess what? That lady would have been crushing my knees too. I would have been unable to use my tray, unable to get to my things stored under the seat in front of me, including important medications. My opinion is that one does not recline the seats on airplanes unless absolutely necessary. My opinion is that most seat recliners are inconsiderate, self centered a******s.

Not to mention we don't know both sides of the story and everyone knows planes are uncomfortable for most people, not just tall folks

Entitled

Sorry, but I was raised better than this, and all the people calling op an a** are just callous, selfish narcissists!

Technically, the woman did nothing wrong to begin with but her "AH" comment was her being an AH, in my opinion. It sounds like this guy didn't have the option on his seat.

Mess!

I would have done the same, got the attention of a flight attendant. The flight was a last minute business trip. That could not have been me because if I ask nicely and they rudely said NO... best believe, she wouldn't have gotten a lick of comfort OR rest. Lol

Being stuck in the middle sardine seat really sucks! I always try to avoid the middle seat like the plague.

I don't see OP or the Terrible Reclining Woman as AHs. What I do see is a couple of whiny entitled b*tches that America seems to be producing at an alarming rate. OP lost me immediately be calling a whole 3 BIG HOURS! on a plane a long flight. Suck it up Buttercup! And if this women's selfishness surprises you, definitely time to get out of the house more because the world is currently being run by people like her.

NTA. Comfort is one thing that we all want to have, especially cramped into those tiny excuses for seats. She is a---h--- because she lacks kindness & decency. You asked nicely for something that is reasonable-space for your legs, & to put your tray down. You did the right thing by referring to the attendant for help.

I don't fly I haven't since 9/11 happened, but, I never put my seat back in the first place, but if I did and somebody very tall was behind me it wouldn't hurt me to move my feet, nor would it have hurt her to just put hers up a bit. Im appalled at some responses... these are the same people I'm certain who don't give up the seat on the bus for pregnant women, don't give up a seat or carry bags for elderly and park in handicap spaces or use their public toilets. I'm so sad at the lack of what was once common manners. People are becoming so entitled and did it ever occur to y'all that she did it when the flight attendant asked so she needed someone of appointed authority to make her play nice with her neighbor then handled it like a child who got told on in school.

Nauseating!

On a recent flight from LA to Paris the woman in front of me pushed it so far down, I think she broke it, and I have really long legs, it was awful. To make matters worse I had paid extra for more leg room but when I got my boarding ticket they’d changed my seat.

What if, instead of a tall guy and the woman in front of him reclining her seat, it was an extremely obese dude and a person sitting next to him? "Ma'm, could you squeeze into your seat? See, I'm ridicuously fat".

It is a very bouncy ride fur those in front of me that lean back. Especially as they take a drink!

Sooo.... tell people should have to pay more to fly on the same plane just because they were born tall? Seats shouldn't recline. Period. Someone being fat is different in most cases. You can't change being tall. But you can change being overweight.

Flight attendant made her move so there's that. I personally wouldn't p**s off someone sitting behind me for 3 hours if I could help it

I am in the same boat, however I can't book more room because I fly with work and they won't pay. One guy wouldn't raise up even a little just threw his seat back hitting my knees. His bald head was right in my lap. I just happened to sneeze right on his bald head. Hahaha. I also don't bother holding in a fart when this happens.

I would have made sure that her flight was not a restful one for sure. Knee jerking, coughing, throat clearing, a little singing; she would have gotten the full treatment for 3 hours.

I love the fact that people dropped a YTA on dude, dumbfucksplaining that he should've booked earlier. When he made it crystal clear HE DID NOT HAVE A CHOICE!!! Morons: he had to get from point A to point B for his job! SHE's the one who dropped an "a*****e" on him for asking nicely. I hope you knotheads are stuck in a similar predicament in the future.

Apparently reading comprehension is no longer taught in schools or everyone just failed their English classes. I see this everywhere, where people fail to comprehend the situation. But I refuse to dumbsplain to anyone. But I will tell people their comprehension skills are s**t, to read it again, the whole thing! Lol.

I'm petty...not sorry either. I would have kept ramming my knee into her chair and just kept saying oops. Or getting up and bumping her chair forcefully...and again "my apologies ma'am" sooner or later she would have gotten the point.

With some of the pictures we've seen on this site of people draping their hair over the back of the seat and shoving their bare feet into the row in front of them, this guy was getting off easy.

If the seat is actually physically touching you she's invading space and she's the a*****e. What the f**k. She had no right to physically touch the passenger behind her with her seat. I can't believe people sided with that b***h.

You are sharing a space with others, it's not a private vehicle. I think people should keep their shoes on during flights but as we're sharing a space it's not really my job to police that.
