What do you think they teach in high school? Academic subjects, of course. Soft skills - definitely. And in high school, people also learn to joke. Yes, to hone a brilliant wit that reaches its peak in college, and in the meantime, school looks like a training ground for witticisms.
In fact, nowhere is the humor as ruthless as it is in high school. Not always impeccably witty, not always graceful and stylish - but teenagers cannot refuse the opportunity to roast each other. And often teachers become the victims of their jokes as well.
Jessica Kirkland, a Virginia teacher, once tweeted about her students' peculiar humor, and went viral with 551.3K likes and over 35.7K retweets. Almost immediately, hundreds of other teachers came to the thread and actively began to talk about how their own students roasted them.
Bored Panda collected for you a selection of the most witty, subtle and simply funny jokes from this thread, which also emphasize that teachers themselves have an excellent sense of irony, so as not to be offended, but to tell others.

This is the first one I actually like. The others are borderline disrespectful.
In fact, humor plays an important role in the learning process, and this is primarily due to the transformation of the role of the teacher. If earlier, a few decades ago, the teacher was the main source of information for students, now they most often become just a moderator of the discussion in the class. Not a superior, but one of the participants in the learning process.
I had a terrible pre-school experience. One of my (2) teachers full on hated me with all her guts and will. One time she pretended to call the police in front of me only because she saw me with a paper that was on the teachers desk. (it fell and I was picking it up, mind you.)
What a horrible teacher. I didn't go to preschool.
Load More Replies...I actually know someone who puts banana in applesauce!!
I’m volunteering at a day camp and today they were making clay animals and one of the other leaders came outside and asked how it was going and one of the kids (6 years old) yelled, better than your life!
My young ESL kids were trying to bother me by calling me "Spaghetti teacher" since my name starts with an S and ends with an 'ee' sound. I just shook my head, they can definitely do better once their English improves
How dare you show your ankles around children. That's deplorable. What a trollop 🤣
I don't think they literally meant thirsty for water lol.... it's"thirsty" as in the slang term
"Formality level between teacher and students are similar to friends or students considering a teacher as a friend," says Nor Azizah Ahmad of Pendidikan Sultan Idris University in Malaysia, who, together with her colleagues, conducted a special study on the impact of classroom humor on learning success.
Unless your student is 5, that's just rude. Anyone older than that should know better.
How old was the child?? Seems like an easy mistake if they were still in early elementary
"Excessive joke elements can cause students to lose focus in learning and if jokes are well implemented, it can help in achieving good academic accomplishment and helping students to be highly spirited," Ahmad also notes.
Isn’t that what comes with school lunch? A small milk bottle? Or was it just my school?
Ha. I don’t understand how the guys at my school walk around with shorts in winter!
No less important is the presence of a sense of irony for the teacher. Indeed, firstly, a person must remember that they themselves were about the same as a teenager, and secondly, they must not be offended by not always successful and sometimes even offensive jokes, but simply laugh with the students.
Proper comeback would be “ if you love cookies so much why don’t you make them yourself”
By the way, it is worth remembering the jokes from our selection - perhaps one of these students will grow up and become famous, and then this humor will go down in history, like this post of ours with brilliant and witty celebrity quotes. In the meantime, just feel free to scroll to the very end and maybe write your own high school jokes in the comments!
In the 80s my history teacher mentioned a movie he’d seen and recommended, saying he’d definitely give it “two thumbs up.” Without missing a beat one of the kids said, “Up what?”
Okay, BP, let's put the shoe on the other foot and do a story about teachers roasting students!
yeah, no. i can't imagine ever being that disrespectful to a teacher for shits & giggles. most of these seem to be from the US, where teachers are horrifically underpaid & overworked. treat them with kindness, they're literally making sacrifices for your benefit. don't be a brat, stop making their jobs harder than they already are. these kids are all old enough to know better, except for the ones in first grade (7yo) & below.
Three come to mind immediately. First, the time I came back from maternity leave and one of my students asked when I was going to have my baby. I was 40 lbs lighter but my tummy was not all gone yet. Second, when I used to wear makeup to work-"We know when you've had enough of our nonsense when you've rubbed all of your makeup off. Third, a few days ago at an assembly the counselor said, "The longer a teacher has been teaching the more of this they've seen. So old teachers have seen it all." And about half of my class turned around and looked at me. One smart kid said, "You don't look old at all. I don't believe your a grandma." (They all will behave to earn seeing pictures of my grandkids 5 minutes before the end of the day.)
