One could argue that the U.S. education system has been in crisis for some time now, consistently scoring lower down on world education rankings than you might expect. But this viral post from a teacher from Texas has highlighted just how desperate the situation is for some teachers, and it’s not just down to a lack of funding.

Julie Marburger, a sixth-grade teacher at Cedar Creek Intermediate School, is at her wits end in the profession that she previously had such a passion for. “It has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to have a classroom of my own,” she wrote. “And now my heart is broken to have become so disillusioned in these short two years.” She has already made the decision to quit teaching, and eloquently outlines why in a desperate and passionate post about the shortcomings of parents, administrators and government support.

Her post has resonated with many people, being shared almost 400,000 times over social media and prompting an outpouring of support and sympathy from fellow teachers who are also struggling to cope. Julie believes that teachers are leaving the profession “in droves” and there is a major crisis looming in the education system unless something changes soon.

Parents also need to be a part of the solution. Instead of blaming the teachers for their kid’s failings, Julie thinks that they should perhaps look closer to home. “People absolutely HAVE to stop coddling and enabling their children,” she said. “It’s not fair to society, and more importantly, is not fair to the children to teach them this is okay. It will not serve them towards a successful and happy life.”

I completely agree, I've worked in education for 8 years and its getting worse and worse. Many young people are loosing the affinity for shame, respect and curiosity. I know many people might read the use of the word shame and reel back in horror but shame is your conscience telling you when you've done something wrong, which is necessary in the pursuit of knowledge and the development of your moral compass, which is very important, especially between the age of 8 - 18. Perhaps their should be more information for parents to learn what they can do to enhance their children's education?

Why the hell would they be interested in shame, respect or curiosity when their role models are Logan Paul and the Kardashians

there are lots of schools like this, but there are also lots more that are the opposite. Don't give up on your dream, maybe just try another school? You seem like a teacher who cares, and the right kids (the ones that want to learn) are out there needing you.

My daughter got in trouble not too long ago. My husband works out of town and my father decided to go with me. He was complaining the whole way there stating that the teacher didn't want to do her job and yada yada. I looked at him and said "Let's give the teacher a chance because I really like her and she's a good teacher and we know how my daughter behaves and she's not an easy kid." He agreed and after talking to the teacher, we realized how much she cared for my daughter and all the steps she had been taking to keep her out of trouble. I will continue to take the adults side until proven differently. It's a hard job and most teachers have 8+ hours with these children. Are there bad teachers out there? Yes, absolutely. I had one when I was in the 4th grade. Parents need to realize that their children aren't angels and a lot of time they deserve the grade given. Look at their returned assignments. Check in with the teacher... TALK to the teacher.

It is strange that in USA teachers have to spend their own money to buy teaching supplies. Here in Finland the school buys all the stuff that the teachers need in school. And if the school budget is low then it is low - the teacher still does not need to spend his/her own money if they don't want to.

To make matters worse, our "leaders" have decided to take funds away from public schools and give them to private schools! It's only going to make it worse for teachers in a public setting.

Oh, well now they are showing up to job interviews with their parents (which is an immediate "not hiring this person" where I work), so I suspect they won't have any problem convincing Mom and Dad to "fix it for me" yet again. What will be funny is when DarlingChild ends up with their butt on the curb and jobless, like the group of fresh-out-of-college employees who wrote a letter to the CEO of some company in the US (I don't remember which company) stating that they had all discussed the dress code and didn't believe the dress code was doing anything good for the work environment. They had all take a vote an unanimously decided it should be changed to jeans and T-shirts instead of slacks and collared shirts. The CEO called them all together for a meeting the next morning, walked in to the assembled group and said basically "Thank you for your concerns. You are all fired. Leave immediately."

yeah teacher are suppose to teach discipline, kindness, morality, sex ed, the subjects and do their homework and assignments. Are you kidding me? if a teacher has to teach everything what is job of parents? pack lunch? She is 100% right, parents spend less time with kids than teachers. If you cut sleeping, cooking, household chores and other work, a parent spends less time with kids than teachers, whose 90% of the working time is to pay attention to the kids. Teachers cannot punish a kid and suppose to calmly try to make them understand what they did wrong. i want some parents to try that everyday with 140 of them and then complain about teachers.

I know several teachers, as well as dating one and this is MILD compared the s**t that they've had to put up with. I'm all for showcasing that teachers aren't getting the support the need BUT to be fair this lady seems to have is easy compared to the teachers in the St. Louis area. As far as I can tell it is lack of support from administration AND from parents. Teachers are NOT there to raise your kids, only to teach them

I don't know and i don't care from where this teacher is... It doesn't matter. The thing is teachers need to be respected for all the hard work. They are human beings that sometimes can't control 25 or more little devils; sometimes they are overwhelmed and they fail, and that is because parents FAILED at being parents. I've seen parents laughing and saying "he's just a kid", when the kid asked for cash, they didn't had, so the kid just took the VISA from the parent's wallet. I was ashamed just for being there at that moment. If your kid is disrespectful with you, no wonder he is disrespectful with his/her teacher. The first 7 years from a kid's life are the most important; as a parent, you need to teach him as soon as possible respect, friendship, the difference between good and bad. If he respects himself/herself, the kid will respect you, teachers, relatives and other adults.

I was voluntery karate instructor. I spent an hours to prepare my classes, woke up every Sunday morning early, spent 2 hours to drive to the dojo and back and try to share my time and passion. When I begin to learn karate 12 years ago, I was charmed by the respect, behavior and values of the martial art ... that's what I tried to teach my students. Last week I decided to quit, because I obviously didn't achieve my goals ... Half of my students ( between 7 and 14) look at me and don't bother to say "hi", as same as their parents, leave in the middle of my class with no excuses ... their parents walk on the tatami with their shoes and make a calls inside the class. That's not the martial art's behavor and I don't want to be part of this any more.

(High school student) I hate when people do this at my school. They stick gum under the desk and are sometimes rude to the teachers. My mom is a teacher and she's a bit afraid of the parents. Now I see why. The teachers don't get paid enough to put up with this.

I'm all to familiar with this environment, even though I live in Bulgaria and I'm a student. I simply study my co-students' behaviour. You would be surprised how much my class teacher(or how's the word for it? How do I call the teacher, who manages the class?) tolerates every day. That woman's got a nerve! As for my co-students... I'm simply stunned how little self-control 15(some are even 16) year olds have these days. I mean, am I the only one in my class who knows what the word "Quiet!" means?

I really understand you. I am from Europe too and i used to be the same in school (that was 16-18 years ago). Now i am in Canada. A while ago I went to take a course and i don't know how i managed to keep my calm and not yell at the other girls (30-40 years old) to keep their mouth shut. When they were talking and laughing, the professor just stood there, smiling and not saying any word. I was ashamed...

My husband is a teacher and it is this exact thing everyday except he is teaching 11-12th grade so they should absolutely know better. It is NOT the teachers job to raise your child. It is the parents responsibility to teach their child respect for others, they should be checking their homework and if the child is not doing what they are supposed to do it is the PARENTS job to discipline them. If your child is failing it is no ones fault but yours. I know not only my hubs but many of my teacher friends talk about the ability of parents to go online everyday and check how their student is doing, are they turning in homework, passing test and quizzes yet almost NONE of them will contact the teacher to see why their child has a poor grade. They wait until the child is failing for the year and then they want to blame anyone but themselves. And the admins are no better. If they would actually back their teachers would be able to do their jobs effetely.

Continue because I ran out of space-All the admins care about numbers because that gets them more money....but not to pay your teachers...to pad their pockets so teachers are forced to "teach to the test" because their jobs are in jeopardy if they don't. its BS! I tell my husband all the time he should look for if not a teaching job somewhere else then a totally different profession even though he is a 3rd generation teacher. Something has to change and its NOT the teachers.

As a part-time secondary teacher, I can tell you that people care less and less about education, I also put my own money into teaching, my time that I could be spending with my daughter just to give the kids a brighter future. But in return, they did not even care, some also played on their phones the whole lesson, and I have nothing to do. The students were disrespectful to me and parents were angry at me for their kids' low grades, I remember when we're young if we had a bad score it all came down to the child. Sorry about this rant, but I just wanted people to know how hard it is.

And just making sure your child doesn't end up injured isn't raising a child. Besides, it's good for children to get bumps and bruises, to learn the limits of their own bodies , and to solve at least some of their own problems.

For those of you who think she is being petty, and the pictures show "normal behavior", B@##$%&T. That is not normal wear and tear, that is willful destruction of property committed by spoiled offspring of STUPID parents. And to the comments regarding discipline do you honestly believe that parents who have little to no involvement in school activities would take kindly to a mere teacher telling their 'precious genius' that they had to behave??? REALLY? I know several teachers and they all have concurred on this. Parents that are blaming her for not being in the right profession, not caring enough, not willing to become a manipulated slave to a classroom of BRATS, and not knowing how to discipline and keep order...STUPID. And this realization will come to you when your precious darling is still living under your roof into his/her forties because he/she can't hold down a job, having to work for people who expect certain behavior that they just can't be expected to do. GOOD LUCK

Same situation is happening in indonesia. I thought it was only here in Indonesia that teachers got scolded by parents for teaching their kids manners!! Some teachers here even got physically beaten in class for confiscating mobile phones used while the teachers are teaching. Physical abuse by students to teachers, can you imagine? One teacher passed away due to the harshness of the beating. Teachers are less and less appreciated. Go somewhere where your talent is appreciated, darling.. teachers who care as much as you do is a rarity these days.

Most likely the children who destroyed their classrooms. I have found the amount of installing confidence is unbelievable!! I'd say nowadays but even my parents had the same issue. They said they give their children freedom, but, in fact, they just don't give a f*ck about parenting and want the school handle the whole thing. And, of course, if the educational institute can't handle their special snowflake children it's their fault not that they don't do anything even resembling to parenting in the time the kids spend with them.

This is why I don't teach. I have had former education contacts call and beg me to come work for them but it will never happen again. The stress is too much, and the lack of support from anyone in the office is incredible! I hold a BA in Elementary Education, a BA in Special Education, and a MEd in Reading, and I am also bilingual in Spanish. I quit 12 years ago to homeschool my own children, and I will never return. Sometimes I need a little cash, but I prefer to work as a dishwasher for a day labor company than to substitute teach, even though the rate is $125/day where I live. My sanity and physical well-being are more important to me than money.

Teachers deserve nothing but the same respect that EVERYONE deserves in their professional capacity. Yes, they work long hours, but so do a lot of other professions, and yes they work "off the clock" but this is not uncommon in a lot of professions. Perhaps it is just that the pictures are not really justifying the frustration she is feeling, in my opinion. If she isn't feeling any amount of success though maybe she needs to change herself and how she teaches/manages her classes. My sibling is a teacher, some years she has a good group, sometimes it's a lot harder, but she adapts and deals with it year by year. Maybe this just isn't the right profession for her, not everyone can teach, the emotional roller coaster of working so closely with kids is part of he job description.

What a heartbreaking thing to read. As a mom of a 17 year old...i could not have raised my son to be the intelligent young man with the bright future he has ahead of him without the support, wisdom, guidence, and compassion of the teachers in his life. And i will be damned if I don't support them. I know my son is not perfect, none of us are. And whenever I would get a concerned call, letter, or email...i would listen to both sides and ensure the teachers concern would be addressed at home with my son! I wish this teacher all the best...and I thank you for the time you have taken to invest in the children's lives you have touched!

It's unfortunate, but a lot of times like this it's the location/district not the kids in general. There are many schools out there that are wonderful and have a lot of successful students come out of it. Where I grew up we had the class clowns of course, but most of us were there to learn and we all had parents that wanted that for us. Most of us went on to college or the military and live productive lives. My parents would never have tolerated me or my brother acting up in class. I'm so sorry any teacher has to deal with that. You're teachers, not parents and parents should have your back!

It’s a hard fact for most people to believe but it’s trye: Most of today’s parents are very, very stupid, very, very bad people. The worst of society breeds the most frequently. Not some, not part - MOST. Most parents today did not plan to be parents, are not smart EVEN IF they have received an education, and are socially and culturally stunted people. They are not mentally or financially equipped to raise children and they do a phenomenally poor job at parenting. Not some, not part - MOST. And their kids end up even nastier and dumber than they are. It’s genuinely disgusting.

I have my students inspect their surroundings at the beginning of each day or period and notify me immediately of any dirt, broken items, etc. They do so again at the end of the session. This gives them ownership and a sense of control and responsibility for their environment. I don't release the students from the room until it is cleaned and tidied. I brought a broom from home (budget cuts--janitors only allowed to sweep once a week). I awarded the privilege of sweeping each day to someone who showed positive character that day (I searched for anything showing cooperation, restraint, good choices from my "problem" students). Students actively vied for this responsibility each day!!! I also had the students pull the full bags out of the garbage bags and tie them, so that the janitor only had to put in fresh bags.

So there was maybe a time when the kids in your room was a bit messy, you brainstormed and adapted and made your room, your life and the kids lives better. Nicely done!

I am trying to sympathize with the teacher (my family comes from a long line of teachers), but I can't help asking ... Have you tried being a care giver at a nursing home? We are consistently ranked as the number one most abused profession (physically and verbally), we spend most of our days washing and feeding the elderly, and are frequently paid only a few dollars above minimum wage. People take advantage of the health care industry like no other profession.

This is my 30th year of teaching but my 7th in a new district. I felt much of what you wrote about and the kids are not the same as when I started teaching. Not all parents fault but when you catch flack from the parent and administration doesn't back you up it is hard to take. After 23 years in my old district and what I considered a "bad" principal I said I was out of there and moved to Alaska. The district I teach in now the parents see the value of an education and back the teacher up. In 7 years here I have only been yelled at once by a parent and the principal call them out on it. I teach 7-12 and my students tell me all the time how much they appreciate me and what I have taught them. I suggest you not quit teaching but find a new district maybe even look for a year to find one that has good administration. I find being in a school that is not in need of improvement in the old no child left behind has been a joy as well. Good luck I hope you can find something that fits

Most of my teacher loved me. I had one bad teacher that really didn't give a s**t about teaching and just sat at his desk and said... Read and thats about it and some times he read, thats it and it was my history teacher in High school back in 92. Most of my teacher were very good teachers. But now the students and the parents are very disrespectful. They are having the same problem in Mexico. They took the power away from the teacher and gave it all to the students, and its becoming havoc.

I go to a special school. It works like a boarding school meaning we live eat and learn there. The amount of disrespect from my fellow students is apalling... Yelling in class drawing on the tables and phones out. Now the rules are getting tighter and more strict so it effects the ones behaving too. I feel so bad for the teachers just trying to do their job, being belittled every class.

I quit teaching after eight years because of these very same reasons. I was no longer allowed to teach, discipline, or hug children. I was not able to manage my lessons or classroom activities. Everything was questioned. Teachers were always in the wrong. I needed liability insurance to teach! Now, get this, it was in the 1980’s! For those who blame this teacher or dismiss what this teacher has to put up with to do her job, you have obviously never been a teacher in the same situation. God bless those who possess the temperament to excel in this sometimes thankless profession. I quit because like a doctor’s pledge to do no harm, I felt I could no longer do the best I could without support from administrators and parents. The worst students knew they could get away with everything because the adult in the room had little or no support from administrators or parents.

I have been a secondary teacher and the head of the economics department for the last 12 years in an international school. In the last three years only, at least ten teachers resigned due to their beliefs that students are spoiled, cannot be managed and show absolutely no respect, and of course parents siding with their kids. its easy for a teacher to justify his failure by blaming others. i believe that not everyone is meant to become a teacher, yes you might end up with ONE disrespectful kid in a class, but if the whole class cannot be managed, while other teachers can, then it's obvious you are not meant to be a teacher. I rarely had any discipline issues, wether you're teaching primary or secondary classes, they're all kids and its your job to earn their respect. And once you can manage your classes there is no reason for the parents to take anyones side.

I feel like the pictures she showed just depicted normal behaviour from children (probably the way it's been for decades) but yeah some parents can be ridiculous. Many students are unmotivated because they don't get enough pressure from their parents. Neither the kid or parent cares. And indeed, people are getting progressively lazier, but it sounds like you might be a bit too sensitive to be a teacher. I've noticed that the strict teachers at my school that don't tolerate any s**t don't really have many people acting out because the students know they won't tolerate it. But the new or young or sensitive teachers are constantly disrespected, even in my high school. You need to assert yourself and be stricter with them

I so agree, I have a degree to teach science in primary school. I done it few years ago now but while being at university I had to do practice in schools, teaching classes etc and that one year of training to be a teacher I saw lots of stuff that put me off even trying to go into teaching full time- now it all seem so much worse. Discipline seems to have vanished- schools push blame on teachers and kids do whatever they want cos parents can't be bothered to parent any more.. sad.

These students are our future? Egads! Respect seems to be the word missing from not only the students and parents but the admin as well. I remember eons ago when I was in school and we acted up we would have a visit from our principal, in both elementary and high school, and when she or he spoke...we listened and we did what as we were told. The teachers had the support of the admins and our parents backed up our teachers. But that was at a whole different time, whole different world, it seems. But isn't r-e-s-p-e-c-t still in the dictionary? smh

I teach kids and although I agree that parents need to be more active and aware of their child's academics, some of the pictures show normal kid behavior and, to me a lack of this teacher being the "alpha" in the classroom. A teacher, no matter what they teach, must set rules and apply them consistently. A good teacher needs to be able to stand up to parents without emotional collapse or getting angry. With that said, teachers need much, much more support from the educational system and respect from our society.

need to play some devils abdicate here. im sure this teacher has a absolute horrible time. But it looks like she can't control her classroom if this is the level of damage and neglect being done. While it is WHOLELY on parents to be the ones to raise their child correctly. you can't use a shot gun approach to teaching. By which i mean you can't use the same practice with every single class. certain groups of kids will end up being more outrageous and unruly than any before and because of that you have to adjust how you teach in order to maintain order. i had to go to summer school once where the teacher who was teaching that 1 class had no fks to give what so ever. gave us 10 pages of homework a night and 15 in class while also making us write down 10 pages of notes in 8 minutes. if you asked her to slow down she would say "no" i wouldn't doubt if everyone in that class ended up failing. not saying thats the case here. but if we dont adapt thats what happens.

I never started teaching after I finished my degree. The last student-teaching assignment I had corked it for me. I was in a fairly ordinary school, but the principal had discovered that the school got more money if it took kids with severe discipline problems. There were fist fights every day, blood on the floor, the usual stuff...but one parent finished it. .... Her daughter (16 and in Grade 8) staggered into school late (as usual) one day and collapsed outside the principal’s office. She was overdosing on heroin and got to the hospital in time to survive. She came in the next day, in the middle of class, screaming at me, threatening me physically, and demanding to know why I hadn’t told her her daughter was on drugs. ... It turns out that she was really angry because she had thought one of her “boyfriends” was getting into her stash. .... That was it. I was finished. I never applied for a full time job. It was the last straw.

I wish there was an easy solution to the mess that is our school systems. There are good and bad schools, good and bad administrators, good and bad teachers, and good and bad parents, so there is no way to point to one group and identify them as THE problem. There needs to be a systematic restructuring of the entire system. Better funding can help, but it won't get to the root of the problems without putting that money into an overhaul of the system.

I'm shocked at some of the comments people have written! I'm a teacher and I get treated like c**p. An 11 year old kid called me an a*****e a few weeks ago and there were no consequences. The other day, I had to go home because I had a horrible migraine from stress, after a kid ran around throwing things in my classroom and refused to go to the office. These are only a couple of examples but it's the climate and culture that we are dealing with today. Some of us have to take anti-depressants just to deal with the job. I know it sounds outrageous, but it's reality. The kids' attitude is "why are you asking me to do something? I don't want to do it and it's my right not to do it." Every time you call a student on something, you know you are going to get called in to the principal's office because the parent complained. You can't win... I know better than to believe my kids when he comes home complaining that he got in trouble or that it's not his fault because bla bla bla.

If the schools would let the ones who want to learn do so and suspend the clowns and troublemakers, this would not be a problem. They won't do that because of the all important attendance equals money aspect. Who cares what the kid does as long as he/she makes the head count so we get all the money we can get.

I know of this all too well. In some of these parents' minds, their children can do no wrong. It's all the teachers fault and their child shouldn't be punished because little Tom, D**k or Harry would NEVER do that. Grow up, parent's. The teachers aren't to blame. Any punishment dealt is well deserved and should be respected, as should doing homework and the classroom area and the teacher. It's awful how these men and women are treated, whilst trying to teach bratty, spoilt children who have never heard the word "No.".

I’m shocked at what the “haters” are saying to this Teacher! I am 59, when I was in school, and I mean all the way through college, I was expected to be polite, listen and be respectful to my teachers (even the ones I didn’t care for!,)!! There were serious repercussions if my parents EVER received a call or note regarding my misbehavior! A call from my tennis coach got me in serious trouble, and it was what I needed! I don’t see families today holding their children or themselves responsible for their actions. There’s no reason for that teacher, or any other teacher, to put up with BS from the student, parents and administrators! I hope you find a school that has a backbone and that you will be able to continue to do what you Love and dedicated your life too. There are good kids out there who need good teachers!!

I think part of why more and more kids act up, especially in high school is because we should really have schooling more directed in their interests. Some schools do this and they have a much better environment. But a lot only do very traditional teaching where your only options are just do honors/ap or do regular generic classes. Some students are happy with it but for a lot these arent really that helpful. Once we know how to read and write, theres only so much benefit to generic subjects. And in all realness, not EVERY student is going to go to college. If the curriculum had more diversity, you will have way better students.

I completely agree! When I left for college I refused to do teaching because of kids. Today it is parents and school administrations of both boards and individual schools. I can tell you exactly when it began. The day Harris and Klebold in April 1999 shot up their school. US Public schools died that day. What was bad disintegrated to a disastrous nightmare. It continues to worsen by the day. In 20 years our schools and society will be completely laughable to the remaining world. We USED to have the best educational system on the planet, we're not even top 20 anymore. Students WILL never change without GOOD role models at home AND school. Parents do NOT parent any longer. Discipline is laughable. This happened because society TERRIFIED decent parents threatening arrest and seizure of children IF they did discipline. It's TIME to allow parents to BE parents again, WITHOUT abuse. It's 100% possible. Our world did it for 1,000s of years. If the US is to survive, things MUST change.

Parents have A LOT to do with the way their kids behave in class. My sister and her partner took my nephew's education very seriously, and he didn't get away with failing to turn assignments in. He failed a test a couple of years ago, and it shook him out of his complacency. Since then he's been studying hard and getting marks in the 90% range, so I guess that would be A+. When I was going to school we were expected to be polite to teachers, and my parents were not fooling around when our education or behavior were concerned either. We would be grounded if we skipped school. I thought for awhile that I should go into teaching. Glad I didn't.

For all those people who have written that messes like the ones photographed is "just the way it is with kids" are obviously young and had very lenient parents and teachers. When I was in school, our classrooms did NOT look like this at the end of the day. Books were NOT stacked like that. We were NOT slobs, because we weren't allowed to be. If my parents were to receive a telephone call from a teacher saying I wasn't doing my work, there would have been hell to pay. And every other student at the time was treated the same way. That may be why I finally finished school with a B.A., B.F.A., M.A. and M.F.A. People who excuse their children for outrageous behavior - and YES, throwing paper and trash around and destroying property IS outrageous behavior - should be fined - or at the very least be required to come in and clean up after their kids.

I've worked as a teacher and this woman just seems to lack the personality to be teaching. You need to become friends with your students but draw the line of authority at just the right point. The fact they damage other peoples property is because she drew the wrong lines. Children don't want to be cooped up in a classroom 8 hours a day, so of course they'll act out. (resulting in damaging your stuff) And you have to give them a chance to act out, but within certain boundaries. If they don't do assignments, try to give them time and your personal attention during class to help with their assignments. It's hard to find a balance between teaching and the relationships with your students but that balance does really exist. It took me some time to find it too. Regarding the 'parents need to teach their children some manners' rant, she's absolutely right. But as a teacher you also play a role in this because (most) students probably spend more time with teachers than with their parents.

Yeah this woman is crazy. A single piece of gum, a shelf slipped off its supports, a pair of headphones and an ipad dropped on the floor, and two misused books is totally normal level of damage for CHILDREN over A SCHOOL YEAR. Also, a piece of paper that's been pulled off the staples? Kids line up against the board, the paper catches on their clothes. They're children, not soldiers. I've worked in schools, and teachers who have a realistic idea of how kids behave don't act like this. They don't tally up minor incidents as personal slights against them. I completely agree that parents should side with teachers on matters of behaviour and the work required. This should never be in doubt. I do think her classroom photos are pretty unremarkable though - a badly made bookshelf collapsed, a book with it's cover torn off is probably the worst of it. I imagine it's the lack of support that the real issue. Those parents commenting that she spends 8 hours with them (school days are only 6 here) so it must be her fault, are the types to blame everything on someone else. Teaching maths, etc is her job, teaching kids how to behave and be respectful is the parents' job.

The teacher is right: we don't have a problem with schools, we have a problem with parents not raising their kids right. We have a problem with parents applying the same entitled attitude they have as consumers onto their supposedly oh-so-smart and perfect kids. We have a problem with parents never telling their kids no or that they did something wrong and never making them earn their absurd amount of privileges. With parents parking kids in front of screens all the time, never or rarely reading to them or have them do something that doesn't overstimulate their minds like TV. With parents who all insist that their kid must be exceptional, that it simply could never be that their child is normal. With absentee dads who impregnate women and leave them high and dry to do it all alone. We have a problem with young women who weren't raised right themselves going into the same cycles of dysfunction. To all the good parents out there too, rich poor or whatever: I salute you.

Given the s****y pay and the lack of support from the administration it mystifies me how anybody would want to be a teacher in the US in the first place. (And, yes, what I am going to write now is mean, but since I just recently got another example at how ignorant and disinterested many American kids are about even the most basic history, I actually don't understand why they bother to go to school at all. The US might as well go back to the early 20th century: Learn to read and do basic math and then start working in a factory at ten for a tiny wage. The Trumpists would probably even approve)

You as the Parent, NEED to be an ACTIVE partner & role model, for Your Child, his or her future depends on it!!! When I tell people I've never spanked or struck or yelled @ either of My boys ( Most do NOT believe Me, nor do I judge anyone on how they raise their children); I still taught My boys respect, right from wrong & that LIFE has responsibilities, even as a child! Not everyone wins, Life isn't always Fair, nor does LIFE just hand You EVERYTHING! As well, RESPECT goes A LOOOONG way! My heart goes out to this poor Teacher who wrote this post, as well as ALL the Teachers who have had such VERY sad & awful experiences Teaching! I thank You, for going into Teaching for the right reasons & for ALL that YOU do!!! I only pray, that You may find a school, where You might be able to continue to teach because believe Me, the Education System NEEDS Angels like yourselves!!!

Who were Support Aides, working in the classroom, with My son, to find out what happened! Did I think these Teachers did this to purposely hurt my son? In Retrospect, NO! I think they were soooo stressed out, it happened in the heat of the moment & I can appreciate that! I can say in all honesty, I have NEVER hit my son, but, he's MINE, I LOVE Him but. I completely was aware of how difficult it could be, dealing with My son, when he was in meltdown mode. Long story short, as parents, I think We seriously NEED to be honest with ourselves & about our children! Teachers, the majority of Teachers, do it for the love of children & teaching! When a Teacher takes the time, out of her busy schedule & usually on her own time off, to call a parent, to try to work with you, About the difficulties your child is having, do You think she's doing this because she has NOTHING better to do? She/He is doing it, because they care! They want your child to succeed but

I eventually pulled My youngest son out of the school system as it was BEST for him!) But, I kept saying to the School Board, 1 Teacher, who We were so lucky to have had taught My youngest son in JK, Kindergarten & the 6th,7th & 8th Grade, who never had a problem with My son! Outburst were minimal & I kept saying: "WHY, Oh WHY, can You not have this Teacher, spend half an afternoon, with the new teacher who would be teaching My son, to speak with Her to find out, what was She doing, that was making My son's day & in itself, the whole CLASS, function sooo wonderfully, next-to-zero meltdowns, & Share it with the new teacher?" They NEVER took up this suggestion & it was sad; sad for the NEW teacher, the class & My son. Life could have been sooo much more simple & easy for Everyone. As well, My son has been severely assaulted by Teachers, in 2 different school, by 2 different Teachers & then, I was lied to about what happened! I was VERY lucky, that I had close friends, who were Support

I am a Registered Nurse & a Mom. I developed & taught a Nursing College Course & taught Adults & even then, the hours that went int course develpment & many hours after, spent mentoring those who were having some difficulty grasping the concepts, has given Me SUCH great respect for Teachers. Then, I became a Mom! My oldest son, had Central Auditory Processing Disorder but was a really well-behaved student & I LOVE & thank ALL the teachers that taught him. My Youngest, has SEVERE AUTISM & was 'HELL on WHEELS: @ school. However, I was VERY< VERY active, in supporting his Teachers, keeping constant communication, many days, going back & forth to the school, up to 8 times many days, in a 4 hour period, to calm My son & work with the Teacher! As a mom: My daughter was having a rough time in school, dealing with rude, insulting classmates. When teachers wrote up students for foul language, bullying, etc., admin would blame the teacher--what were they doing wrong that caused or allowed the behavior? [I know, because I taught in the building.] My daughter developed an extensive, colorful collection of lots-of-letters foul language to respond to the jerks. These awful kids deserved the strong response from their peer [my daughter]. However, her language was absolutely not acceptable in the school or work environment. I made certain that my daughter understood this. I told her that in the event that she got in trouble for her language, "I ain't got your back". I would defend her reason for needing to stick up for herself, but I would never claim that it was ok to use her foul vocabulary, even if the words were too big for the jerks to understand.

Teachers in the US lose valuable instruction time disciplining students, explaining etiquette, redirecting destructive behavior, dealing with foul-mouthed, rude students. Parents are frequently defensive when their child is corrected or disciplined. It's very frustrating, but we have to find creative ways to guide our students toward proper good citizenship behavior.

To those saying its "only gum" it's "just a book" kind of c**p. Yeah it is JUST a book or only gum so WTF should it be out of order, in the wrong place or damaged when it's absurdly easy for the kids to remedy? These items and this room is HEAVILY and frequentlyi used. They must last a very long time and should be treated with the utmost respect to insure the items are there and useable for the multitudes that come after them. Additionally there is ONE teacher with a c**p load of things to do for those 20+ kids if you aren't cousin humping moron that math alone means basic housekeeping is absolutely something the kids should be expected to perform every day without failure or complaint. "Pick up after yourself" should absolutely be mandatory in any and all curriculums. It's fundamental to learning.

It is very sad for society that education is undervalued by a lot of parents and their kids - and so they disrupt classes, damage school property and don't support any efforts at discipline. 13 years ago I was one of 4 parents who attended a school- funded Positive Parenting for Teens for all Grade 8 parents (200+ kids in Grade 8 !) The Guidance Counselor told us how she had contacted more than a few parents of Grade 8 students found smoking in the toilet block and would get a 'so what' response ... no wonder the kids think they can do what they like. Firm but fair parenting and support for educators is our responsibility as parents !

Those of you who commented and put any blame WHATSOEVER on the teacher, you are freaking IDIOTS and YOU are problem. Those of you who said, "she's petty, they're just being kids!" YOU are freaking IDIOTS and YOU are the problem! That is exactly what we, as teachers, are talking about! It's not OUR JOB TO RAISE YOUR KIDS to HAVE SOME DAMN RESPECT and MORALS. You want it to be our job? Then we get to decide what they learn and how they're disciplined and you shut the hell up. Period. No? Then teach your damn kids how to be civilized so other people want to be around them! And there shouldn't be a single negative comment on here from ANYONE unless that person has managed a classroom of 25 kids, 5 days a week!

Things were like this before. It's a problem that's been in our society for too long. Yes, teachers work to help your kid and they are responsible for some part of their education, but by no means does that mean that teachers are responsible for your kid NOT TRYING. Teachers have a hard job that pays little. Give them a break.

I have been a teacher for five years. The learned helplessness of students these days is unbelievable. They know they will be passed anyway on so why do the work? In a day and age when ISS is "fun" and oss is a vacation, students have no culpability. Parents and administration should really man up and support teachers if we are to do our job well. The pay is a joke. Athletes get paid millions and we can't even make it on our pay, after two degrees!

They did not come any smarter than Oscar Wilde. He spent enough time in America to know. He also said he was amazed at how the American parent obeys their children. In America the young are always ready to give to those who are older than themselves the full benefits of their inexperience. I read years ago of some big wig American Senator stating that America wants the best education system in the world. He quickly followed that up by saying, 'not the most expensive in the world but the best.' That to me sums up the diabolical system in the US. One other question i ask many Americans is, why is it that those Americans that can afford it, why do they send them to Oxford and Cambridge here in the UK. Even your very own Mark Twain many years ago castigated the American education system. quote-scho...d05bcc.jpg quote-schools-should-be-the-most-beautiful-place-in-every-town-and-village-so-beautiful-that-oscar-wilde-84-75-52-5ac7e90d05bcc.jpg

It's interesting to hear the teacher's side of it. My son always knew that we wouldn't approve of him behaving badly in school or not respecting his teachers. Maybe that's why he was the top student in his classes all the way from grammar school through high school. Kids are so spoiled today. They seem to expect to get the corner office right out of school without paying their dues. Something is seriously wrong in our society.

Both my boys succeded one has passed on, but the other has a great job well known for his choosen profession and has 3 girls who are being bought up as they were , to respect others and you wish to be respected

Parents think that good parenting means telling your kids that they are super special, our lil genius, Daddy's lil princess, when it only sets the kids up for failure and social maladjustment. I think parents do this out of guilt that they don't have enough time to spend with their kids, so they lavish praise rather than knuckling down with their kids and knowing what is going on with their education.

I will always side with the teachers, always! Teachers sometimes understand kids better than parents. Teaching, i imagine is akin to the saying "you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink" kids are the same, they chose not to do the work. Then the parents blame teachers for missed work? I don't understand that at all. The evidence is right there. I think teachers are heroes for what they do. Underpaid, no respect from anyone. I think teaching kids is one of the hardest jobs in the world. And some parents are raising a bunch of dumb a*s kids. Humans are doomed. Thank you for speaking the truth. Hopefully the message will come through. Although I've read some comments from parents (trolls) thinking this teacher is in the wrong. To them i say f*#k you.

Children these days are not being taught to respect their own things/toys/electronics, let alone other peoples. I've already determined a dollar cap on my own sister's kids birthday presents, because I know they'll eventually break it. The best lesson my parents did to make me appreciate my things was take them all away and threaten to even take the door off my room. "Even privacy is a privilege." Sobered me up real quick.

Parents blame teachers. Teachers blame parents. Everyone blames administrators. But God forbid the kids be held responsible for doing assigned work?! WTH? I'm old, I guess. In my day? If you don't do the homework, Junior, then you get the consequences. And if the tax rate can't be raise dto provide resources for schools, whose fault is *that*? I honestly don't think most of the blame should be on parents or teachers. Parents and teachers just need a better connection. Parents in general shouldn't blamed not teachers either, but both need to make sure the child is getting good education and is behaving properly. I mean if I was a grown-up parent, I definitely wouldn't blame the teacher before asking the teacher wat is going on. And what am I guilty of? Procrastinating.

I don't think much has changed in the way children behave in schools. I am looking at the classroom and thinking back to how my old classrooms looked and it seems about the same as it was 20 years ago. Not going to say teaching is a great job when the cost of your student loan payments mean you are just barely more than minimum wage, but kids have always been d***s since the dawn of time and parents have always been biased about their children. They hate to clean and you need to clean with them and actually teach them how to do it for them to do it even half right and parents hate when someone else says their kid is a problem. Teaching has always been a s****y job, I have never understood why anyone would want to be a teacher. Sounds like a nightmare.

That's not totally true in my experience. Every one of my friends had the same situation as I did: if I got in trouble at school, I was in trouble when I got home, no matter what the situation. The teachers and principal was always believed over the children, if for no other reason that to teach us a life lesson. Life isn't always fair, and your real "job" in life is to figure out the "game rules" and get to winning, but being cruel to others or cheating was never to be tolerated while trying to win.

The same leftwing liberal society that is teaching kids to do what they want because it feels good is the same one pushing against reserved values. Teachers who belong to the unions that are putting left wing politicians into office and then complain about left winger influence are redundant. Start pushing for moral conviction and values and we might have some talking grounds. Until then, teachers are the problem they are complaining about.

You're a teacher....? Who says things like "you a*s wipe" and " you piece of s**t?" Yeah, not buying it. If so, you're likely the worst teacher in the entire world.

How sad. My son recently completed pre-kindergarten and he had horror stories about one classmate's misbehavior. I hope that kid got help, but I also hope my own kid isn't influenced by bad examples. I worry so much about making sure he's a good person.

You should walk out before the end of the year and leave the principal with a situation on his hands. Don't be nice if you are getting out of education. You won't need the reference anyway. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I taught for over 21 years in a good district, and still had to raise the parents as well as their children. It is insane.

I agree with her statements & certainly those are very real problems that teachers deal with on a daily basis. But these pics, tho...seriously? You're quitting your career because of a broken bookshelf & some gum on the windowsill? Really? I was expecting to see a ravaged classroom & serious destruction, not a few slips of paper on the floor and some decorative paper falling off the wall. Thank goodness she doesn't work in a movie theatre! Popcorn everywhere, spilled drinks...and those are from the adults!

That may be why I finally finished school with a B.A., B.F.A., M.A. and M.F.A. People who excuse their children for outrageous behavior - and YES, throwing paper and trash around and destroying property IS outrageous behavior - should be fined - or at the very least be required to come in and clean up after their kids.

honestly thats just how kids are and if you have them spend that last 20 minutes of school cleaning each day then your classroom probably wouldnt look like that and also students are focused on work all day everyday so they get lazy! my teachers would scold us or let us out later if we left the class like that! keep in mind that they dont want to be there anymore then you do and theyre probably not even aware of how theyre treating your classroom

this s**t happened all the time in my old school. the students I was around were awful people and made lovely people cry. (the lovely people were teenagers.) our school doesn't even have detentions anymore so there are no ways for teachers to punish students. (except I got more than 15 detentions in my final year because the principal hated me. I got into a fight with a boy who sucked up to her.)

On the other side, they were horrible teachers (one got fired for screaming "Shut up!" at a kiddo). They lacked the passion this woman seems to have. This person should't be teaching.

YOU are freaking IDIOTS and YOU are the problem! Period. No? In a day and age when ISS is "fun" and oss is a vacation, students have no culpability. Parents and administration should really man up and support teachers if we are to do our job well.

Teacher I am with you. I have worked in retail, where disrespectful kids and their "doting" parents are a real headache. I've never been tempted to slap a child, but said child parent? Well lets just say there were days where imagining that was what got me through some encounters without screaming.

If someone destroy your bookshelves. I would give them "F" grade no matter what. They have no respect for u. I will be damn meanest teacher and give them a big lesson. If they still dont care then send them all to detention as their punish no matter what until they are starting to listen and to do their homework, goes on and on. if student(s) make some good excuse. I will give "F" grade and dont want to hear "But"... Nothing more. I know all students are getting smart and defense and want their parent support which is wrong! Parent ought listen u over their kids! Take many evidence photos are your key powerful! To parent will feel so foolish and dont know their true colorful of kids!

Ms. Harburger I agree with you when I went to school & my parents or any other parent that I know of heard their children were doing this they would take some action & would end it before it even got started real good I mean a screeching halt (NO FURTHER)back then though they could displine their children and not get in trouble themselves which is not the case now & that is definitely what is wrong with the children of today yes sure they can ground them or send them to their rooms or take the car & cell phone away from them this does absolutely no good therefore I'm with you 100% and wish you the best in your life and I'm surprised you have taken it this long

This breaks my heart. She's absolutely right. This didn't happen when I was in school.

Totally agree, I work in higher education and we have students who don't even bother to flush the toilets! One time a staff member asked a young girl and said it was not her home and walk away! *facepalm*

Kids learn that Mommy and Daddy will rescue them, not that they have to earn anything? WTH? I am way too old for this world.

The pictures she posted didn't really forward her argument . . . unless you're stunned that a particle board bookcase from Walmart would fall apart and a border would come undone from a bulletin board . . . . two books under a chair and a couple of paper scraps on the floor (???). Anyway, good on her. Time to depart.

Parents these days are too sensitive. They think that everything negative said about their child will end the world. And kids are too spoiled and protected, and they dont have tough enough skin. People are raising the annoying liberals of next generation by letting them think that nothing bad can happen to them and that they're perfect. You think millennials are bad now? You haven't seen nothing yet.

Dude you need to read up on what a liberal is. Conservatives are what got us into this mess as they slash school funds and give more hand outs to the wealthy. Like your flake prez tRump. Drains the swamp by filling it and slashes more funding. Great job, idiot.

Giving up and surrender is a really good thing sometimes, when you happen to be in a situation where nobody wants your help and just harrasses you. By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that her students see her as a role model?

Indeed there have been more than a few clickbaity articles on the site recently. But this is not one of them. Here we are presented to a real problem and reminded to actually raise our kids.
