Barn Hill Preserve organizes guided encounter tours, lets its visitors hang out with sloths, and… swim with otters. That’s right, if you’re stressed out from working long hours or the mundane routine that is everyday life and are thinking to yourself, “What could make me feel more relaxed?” Chilling with Asian small-clawed otters in a pool is the answer.

More info: barnhillpreserve.com | Facebook | Instagram

The participants must be at least 16 years and are required to sign a waiver before their experience. “We are a federally licensed facility in Ethel, Louisiana. Our otter swims are a very limited experience as we don’t provide many,” the President/CEO of Barn Hill Preserve, John “Gabe” Ligon, told Bored Panda. “The swim experience includes a tour of the animal sanctuary which includes African servals, red kangaroos, and a climate-controlled sloth exhibit.”

The otter swim portion of the tour includes time for changing clothes, orientation, and swimming with the otters. It lasts for approximately 1 hour. The average time these cute otters swim in the pool is 35 minutes. The number of otter swims is limited so that this remains a very positive experience for these adorable animals.

However, animal rescue and preserve does much more. “We also provide a home for wild animals, including a large group of free-flying macaws,” Ligon said. “These macaws have lifespans of up to 80 years and possess intelligence that compares with human toddlers. We help these birds learn to fly so they can live out their 80 years in the Louisiana countryside. We hope that seeing these birds fly in a flock, will inspire people to help protect their wild cousins, who are rapidly losing land to human development. Some animals are owner surrenders, while others are planned acquisitions from Federally licensed facilities.”

Coming back to the swim with these painfully cute animals, the activity is only scheduled once per day and only a few days per week. “Guests enter the pool, and the otters are introduced for playtime. If they want to play with enrichment toys on the deck, that’s their choice. Our otters are never forced to do anything, the entire experience is completely positive,” Ligon explained.

Interestingly, the Asian small-clawed otter is the smallest otter species in the world. It inhabits mangrove swamps and freshwater wetlands in the South and Southeast Asia and lives in extended family groups with only the alpha pair breeding; offspring from previous years help to raise the young.

Due to ongoing habitat loss, pollution, and hunting in some areas, the Asian small-clawed otter is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

“A typical day for an Asian otter at the preserve includes waking up to the smell of a fish and shrimp breakfast. Taking a morning swim, grooming one another to dry off, taking a mid-day nap, chasing insects that fly into the exhibit, and taking more naps. Our otters on exhibit have a large behind the scenes privacy house that allows them to enter any time they aren’t feeling social.”

Barn Hill Preserve has been very active in the community as well. “We provide free educational programs to students at elementary schools, some of which have never seen these animals in ‘real life,'” Ligon added. “We participate in an event hosted by the Dream Day Foundation that provides a fun-filled day of no worries to the patients of St. Jude and their families. Last year, some of our staff, including myself, worked to rescue spectacled flying foxes that had been orphaned due to the record heatwave in Cairns, Australia.  While in Australia, we also presented a donation check from fundraising to the Tree Kangaroo Rescue and Conservation Centre for their amazing work with tree kangaroos.”

“We are very passionate about the work we do here. We challenge the public to get active in what’s going on in the environment, the world around them, so we can ensure that wild places for wildlife are here for generations to come.”

Some people loved the idea of swimming with otters

Others were worried about the animals:

After receiving some backlash, Barn Hill Preserve addressed the concerns

People thanked them for the good work they’ve been doing:

There's always a bunch of armchair experts who have to throw shade at any effort to do some good: it doesn't have to be instantly perfect, it just has to be good enough, and it doesn't have to confirm to your narrow concept of what is good and right!

"Our investigations revealed that it is incredibly difficult to breed otters, despite efforts by animal dealers to claim that they are breeding the animals. In order to support demand for otters, there are now organized networks of farmers, hunters, collectors, dealers and exporters who source otter cubs from the wild and export them from Thailand and Indonesia. Smoke and dogs are used to drive otters from their dens. The fiercely protective parents are then shot, electrocuted or chased away so that the cubs can be taken. As a result, three of four otter species found in Southeast Asia, including the Asian small-clawed otter, are considered to be at risk of extinction in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)." https://www.worldanimalprotection.us/blogs/why-swimming-with-otters-is-wrong?fbclid=IwAR0QWJ4ChZL4fvzZFcUrggTLtpzT0iBXCNF_UayhbI9X18yEu1oyynaTP0g

Calling yourselves a "preserve" and using wild animals ad a means of generating income, aka charging people for "encounters' is ethically disgusting. It's not a preserve, it's a place where you swim with captured wild animals.

We also cut off the private parts of pets "for their own good". We do all sorts of stuff like eat KFC too. Somehow the outrage ramps way up when the critter is cute though. For all the stuff we do, this seems pretty harmless and if it gets people to think more about preserving nature then I'm all for it. No wild animals are going to eating these little ones so it's a tradeoff. They get vet care and have no predators, so there's that.

This looks really cute but I do think its somehow sad and odd that we find it normal to have animals in captivity to play with us just for fun. Otters are wild animals. I personally think a wild animal is happier when it gets to act natural.

I have been here twice. We did not do the Otter swim but my experience with the rest of the rescue facility and the staff was great. The animals have large very open areas, the groups are kept small and everyone knows what they are doing. I'm sure the same applys to the Otter swim.

This bothers me a lot. Asian Small Clawed Otters are being targeted in the exotic pet trade, which is partly responsible for their vulnerable status, especially in places like Japan. They have very specific needs and don't reproduce well in captivity. Where did they get their otters? Some of the pictures are pups. Also that looks like a chlorinated pool, which isn't healthy for the otters.

They almost had me til they said "we visit elementary schools to provide educational outreach students, many of which haven't heard of or read about animals." Like what, babies then? It made their "facility" seems more like a cash grab, at least when swimming with manatees it's in their natural habitat. These otters just have a crappy pool, where is a recreated natural environment like Aquariums have to make the otter more comfortable and at least a semblance of their normal life. And you know, the pool would have been okay if they used it only for when the otters are "working" and kept a separated recreated natural enviroment for the otters to relax in.
