The Exploration Of Our Inner Melancholy In Surreal Imagery

About seven years ago I faced depression for the first time in my life, and around the same time I picked up the camera. Photography allowed me to escape into a different world, the one which I was creating, a place and a story that was lead by me, not that I was led by. However, after a few months of taking images and learning the fundamentals of photography I reached a point where I fell into the arms of melancholy and quit taking images. It wasn’t until I had battled melancholia and came out on the other side that I could continue doing what I was deeply passionate about – photography.

For the past year I have been working on a series of images depicting surreal and melancholic scenes that are inspired by the inner world of dreams and psychology, where I invite the viewer to interact with the internal world of solitary figures that symbolize our own unconscious states. The images are inspired by the years I went through depression where my goal is to reflect human experiences that will allow the spectator to reflect on their own journey.

One of the most important lessons I learned from going through melancholia is to not fear it, but find out what it wants from you, learn from it and see where it will bring you. Being trapped in the arms of melancholia it is easy to only see the darkness surrounding oneself, but one should never forgot to try to see the light in the mist of the depression. Nothing comes to an end, only to a new beginning.
