Rolled Up To My Parents' House To Find Them Giving Away Free Water For People And Their Dogs In The Excessive Heatwave In America. I’m Proud To Be Their Daughter
That's so awesome, there is a house a few blocks down from my mom's place that has a water fountain on the edge of their lawn by thw sidewalk, and at the bottom there is another faucet with a dog (or cat) bowl under it. It even has a small hole in the bottom so the water drains out so it doesn't get dirty or breed icky stuff.
Your parents sounds like wonderful people. I wish I knew more like them!
Stores In Turkey Open Their Doors To Stray Dogs To Escape Extreme Heat. There Is Also One On The Stairs That You Can't See Well
I cant help but think " it starts with the animals" .
Load More Replies...I visited Istanbul last year. There are quite a few feral dogs and cats on the streets but the local residents take care of them and feed them. I never saw these dogs bothering anybody. Erdogan's decree of euthanizing the dogs does not jive with the character of Turkish people. They were all so kind.
Turkey passed a law the end of July 2024 to get rid of all stray dogs. Horrible photos and videos have surfaced of massacred dogs murdered and thrown into pits. That being said this post no longer stands true. Link: https://observers.france24.com/en/middle-east/20221226-turkish-authorities-kill-stray-dogs-landfills
This only proves there are still good people despite their government.
So glad for the poor dogs. Those tile floors must be cool as well. Wonderful store keepers 💖
My doggo also loves to throw herself down on the tile after a walk when it's hot

Putting small stones in the water will give bees a place to climb out in case they fall in.
Load More Replies...We all should do this...I put water in plates in a garden for bees, hedgehogs, cats....This should be even in the streets.
No Hedgehogs in the US but in addition to Bees and Cats I water Squirrels, Chipmunks, Groundhogs,Opossums, Raccoons, Birds and the occasional Deer, too.

Even though heat waves are among the most dangerous natural hazards, they rarely receive adequate attention as their consequences aren’t immediately visible.
“From my experience, people often downplay heat wave risks,” says medical expert Dr. Nicole Levine, MD, from Health Strive. “Possible consequences are severe dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. These conditions can lead to serious health complications, including organ damage or even death.”

A Very Hot Day Today In The Center Of Rovaniemi In North Finland (Afternoon The Meter Was Showing +32°C). At The Beach, People Weren´t The Only Ones, Who Needed A Little Cooling
These are reindeer, the domesticated versions of caribous found in North America. They roam free in most areas around North Finland.
Caribou and reindeer are the same species, domesticated or not.
You do realize that we Finns aren't used to these kinds of temperatures, especially when in the past the usual temp for Finnish summer was around +20C and +25C was literally breaking heat records here. So stop gatekeeping temperatures/heat, some people aren't used to it.

I thought there was something wrong with the hotel AC as it was not cooling down. Called the front desk and was told that the AC cannot keep up with the outside temperature.
No, it's not, during the monsoon the humidity is quite high. That dry heat business is a marketing ploy

Well, today he left three of them for me (two frozen)! Makes a world of difference in 97-degree weather... Thank you, sir!
The note says: "To mail lady or man. Thank you for delivering mail in such horrible heat! Stay hydrated and shaded when you can. Thank you!! 3 waters all yours."
I don't know if this is true everywhere in the US but in Birmingham, Alabama -- where it gets very very hot and very very humid -- the mail trucks do not have any a/c. Its tough on the mail deliverers.
I am in north Alabama and deliver mail, all we have are these little fans that blow hot air. I keep a cooler with a wash rag in it and as my ice melts I dip my wash rag in it and put it around my neck.
Load More Replies...We had a UK heatwave hitting 40 Celsius. I was expecting a delivery that day. Opened the door, received the parcel, I held out an ice cream and a frozen litre bottle of water to him, he took them, said "Ta" and left. Efficient London interaction! 🙂

Such brutal weather conditions resulted in severe water shortages and dozens of deaths in Mexico and Central America. In Pakistan, hospitals were overwhelmed by the high heat, with frequent power outages and water shortages in some areas. Japan also issued heart-stroke alerts as temperatures reached record highs.
During This Southern California Heatwave, My Local Grocery Store Has Coolers Filled With Complimentary Water Bottles At Each Entrance
Wow that is pretty awesome, especially considering bottled water cost like 4 times what a gallon of gas does!!!
Really?? Wow. That's surprises me. Around here bottled water is one of the cheapest things you can buy. A 24 pack of 500 mL water bottles is something like $2.99 Canadian which is like $2 us. Whereas for us, right now a gallon of gas converted from imperial to metric and US to Canadian would cost $7.50. But I agree with you, it is really pretty awesome of the store to do that
Load More Replies...Ironic that this water, which belongs to everyone, is stolen basically, bottled and sold by huge corporations such as Nestlé.

Ah yes the joy of keeping outdoor plants in Texas. Particularly in August but gotta have my flowers
Heat waves and their impact are much worse in the city, where the high temperatures are amplified by buildings, concrete parking lots, cars, and air conditioning units that radiate and emit heat long after the sun sets. The lack of trees and shade also greatly contributes to hotter city environments. This phenomenon is called the urban heat island effect and impacts 41 million people.

Eh, I dunno. I wouldn´t trust a random bottle stuffed behind a sign somewhere at the train station....
honestly keeping a frozen bottle of water on you helps, you can wrap it in like a bandana as an ice pack and then drink the water as it melts
I sometimes stuff a bottle or two down the back of my shirt when cycling home on a hot day. Looks a little strange, but keeps me going.
Load More Replies...That’s why it’s crucial for people, especially in urban areas, to take precautions during heatwaves. Dr. Levine recommends, “It is important to always keep your body cool and hydrated, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Load More Replies...This is the part where you wet them down as often as necessary, they will be mad for a while, but will eventually understand that being damp helps. They may even begin to demand it in future. Cats are far more intelligent than a lot of people realise.
Our power (and thus our AC) went out last week during the heat of the day. We have one battery powered fan that's pretty strong (uses tool batteries). Who got it? The house pets. Got it angled so three species of fluffs got a breeze while the humans toughed it out.
Smart cats. My AC died 3 years ago and I had to replace the whole HVAC system. I work from home and couldn't go to the office and leave the house with the Windows closed because it would have killed my pets. My office is on the end of the house that gets sun all day. I had to call my boss 1 day and tell her I can't finish I'm getting sick from the he heat. I grabbed ice packs from the freezer and put them on my chest and back of my neck and pointed a fan at me, also had a wet rag on my face.
Don’t forget that furry pets struggle in the heat too. Dogs that walk on the pavement should wear protection from the hot surface and have plenty of water in their bowls. Cooling pads and doggy pools are also great options for cooling down your companion. For more on that, you can check out our previous article, where an expert veterinarian provided additional precautions you can take to protect them.
I Had To Let My Mom Borrow My Crocs Because Her Sandals Melted
This is who I hate seeing people (with shoes) walking their dogs (no shoes) on the street/sidewalk. Their poor poor feet!!! If your dog's barefoot in summer and you think it's no big deal, you should be barefoot too
If I can't put my feet on the sidewalk then my dog and I don't go for a walk. Simple as that. He gets irritated but I'd rather he be irritated and antsy in the house than have burned (burnt?) feet!
Load More Replies...Some tourist wore flip-flops on the sand at Death Valley a few weeks ago. They melted/broke and the skin on his feet basically melted off. 3rd degree burns, full thickness. He was only like 40 feet away from pavement. Some people managed to carry him to the parking lot, but it was too hot for a helicopter to pick him up there. Rangers had to drive him to a higher elevation where it was cool enough for the helicopter (a balmy 109F).

Sometimes, If The Heat Is High, Corn Can Be Infected By A Fungus That Causes The Kernels To Expand And Become The Delicious Delicacy Known As Huitlacoche
This is eaten, usually as a filling, in quesadillas and other tortilla-based foods and soups.
I'm sure it's tasty, being a delicacy and all, but the look is really off-putting. My first association are deformed and over saturated ticks.
Also the idea that it is the result of a fungal infection.
Load More Replies...Not heat related. It's fungus, edible one, likes moisture. I've seen a lot of it years ago, on wet, coolish( by comparison) summers.
Which ancient Hispanic mad-lad saw that thing and thought "Imma put it in a quesadilla"
It is. Huitlacoche quesadillas are twice as expensive in Mexico but well worth it
Load More Replies...Among US farmers it was always called Corn Smut and was considered a pest. In MExico its Huitlachoche... its a fungus and its delicious. Some call it the MExican truffle. It does look awful on the stalk, but shave off a bit and put in a taco......man it will change your life
Lastly, we want to emphasize that high temperatures are no joke and can pose serious health threats, especially to more vulnerable groups of people like the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals struggling with heart conditions and other various illnesses. So be sure to be safe in this summer heat, and don’t forget to hydrate!

I know it's been said, but we're not equipped for these levels of consistent heat in the UK! I was working in a care home during a heat wave once ,it got to over 40 degrees in there and obviously no aircon. Oh also, they couldn't turn the heating off fully. Hellish working in that.

Temperatures like this should make parking decks, subterranean ones in particular, vastly popular in Utah, Texas, Arizona, Nevada,... They save space, too, and shorten the walk to whatever building you want to enter a lot.
I live in Utah. Typically, the multi-level parking garages are built in the lower levels of most downtown buildings, reserved garages buildings at some other large buildings. But most parking is outdoor parking lots.

I had some similar BS. Chip them apart after leaving in fridge, or in the winter. In AZ there rarely is chocolate in vending machines and I personally carry coolers in my car for groceries. Sandals Melting In Heatwave
Welcome To Australian Summer. Had To Pop My Hook In The Fridge Because The Handle Started To Get Soft From The Heat
Has anyone else had this problem? Had these for most of last year, but I guess they missed the heatwave (was 36°C here today - luckily not the 38°C it was meant to be)
Cute hook. But more importantly, why don't Driscoll brand strawberries come in hear shaped containers in the u.s.???
I keep wet sponges in plastic bags in freezer. Switch out as needed to keep things from softening/melting inside the house.
It is a crochet hook and the handle is made out of polymer clay that had been baked on (set)

That has been caused by something else. Glass does not break just by heat. Fast temperature changes can (t.ex. pouring hot water in a glass standing on a cold surface), but a sheet of glass lying in the sun? no way. Even if the sun slowly comes slowly over the glass lying in the shade it will warm gradually.
Glass will expand slowly and slightly in heat. If one side is hotter than the other or if there is no space to expand into, this will happen.
Load More Replies...Yep! Saw it happen to a car with tinted windows parked, on a 103° day, right in front of me. The glass tried to expand, the tint wouldn't allow it, and the window went 'Zzzziiiinnngggg', then exploded. The pieces of glass were still vibrating on the ground.

Their reasoning is that we'd have to shut all the windows, and it'd get hotter before it got colder. Which I understand. But please, for the love of God! I can stand some more unbearable heat if it means we get good coldness. It's only 3° hotter outside right now.
Turn on the air conditioner with all the windows open; after 20-30 minutes close the windows.
Just like in the car, open the windows for at short period, and it gets cooler faster.

It's So Hot My AC Unit Is Sweating
That's not from heat. It's from humidity. Specifically, the air inside the room is very humid, and condensing on the AC unit. A dehumidifier will fix this.
Air conditioning units are basically dehumidifiers that dump the hot air outside instead of inside. Most newer ones have a dry setting too.

Not a heat thing. Chemical reaction. Some variations of styrene plastic, don't play well if they come in contact for extended periods of time, with other objects. Some aspect of the chemical makeup of the eraser caused a chemical reaction and started to effectively eat the styrene of the calculator.
Extreme Heat Melted Her Car Light
Fake. Image popped up in 2023. Tail lights are made from polycarbonate plastic, which typically melts at temperatures of 288C to 316C (550F to 600F), meaning it was impossible for the lights to melt from the heat.
Mediocre posting. Some entries are just plain BS and a great number of entries are not related to climate change, they are merely the effect of summer heat. I'm not denying climate change, CG only makes the effect comes a bit faster but isn't causing them.
we once brought chocolates on a long car trip in the summer. Surprise, they melted. We took them back home and threw them in the freezer. The melted chocolate froze in the shape of the plastic blister it was in and we had like a giant bar :-D I also had a giantic blob of melted but solid again Twizlers that were still edible. Yes, i am fat.
Keep the sun from hitting the windows at all. Cheap roller blinds mounted outside do the job. But don't get the plastic ones! Get the kind made from bamboo strips.
I'm grinding my teeth reading all the nay-sayers. Come live here and tell me about how the heat has nothing to do with all this c**p. You learn the hard way. Babies and pets die if left in the car if its closed. Its better to be safe than sorry. I wish I could show you photos that were on the news of a man who fell on the sidewalk, could not get up, and burned badly before anyone came to help him.
