Due to climate change, summers are changing. People today are facing more frequent, longer-lasting, and hotter heat waves than they did before. Not only does it mean that individuals are getting increasingly sweaty and need to crank up the air conditioning more often, but it also poses major and even deadly health threats.

To show that extreme temperatures are no joke, our team at Bored Panda has compiled yet another list of striking photos of how heat waves affect every living creature and our surroundings. Scroll down to see how people are desperately trying to cope with such brutal weather, and be sure to share some useful tips you know for combating heat with others down below!

While you're at it, don't forget to check out a conversation with medical expert Dr. Nicole Levine, MD, from Health Strive, who kindly shared some precautions that people should stick to in extreme heat.

That's so awesome, there is a house a few blocks down from my mom's place that has a water fountain on the edge of their lawn by thw sidewalk, and at the bottom there is another faucet with a dog (or cat) bowl under it. It even has a small hole in the bottom so the water drains out so it doesn't get dirty or breed icky stuff.

I visited Istanbul last year. There are quite a few feral dogs and cats on the streets but the local residents take care of them and feed them. I never saw these dogs bothering anybody. Erdogan's decree of euthanizing the dogs does not jive with the character of Turkish people. They were all so kind.

Turkey passed a law the end of July 2024 to get rid of all stray dogs. Horrible photos and videos have surfaced of massacred dogs murdered and thrown into pits. That being said this post no longer stands true. Link: https://observers.france24.com/en/middle-east/20221226-turkish-authorities-kill-stray-dogs-landfills

No global warming effect. Just like humans, bees need water to live. More water when it's hotter, but still this is not a sight related to climate change.

Even though heat waves are among the most dangerous natural hazards, they rarely receive adequate attention as their consequences aren’t immediately visible.

“From my experience, people often downplay heat wave risks,” says medical expert Dr. Nicole Levine, MD, from Health Strive. “Possible consequences are severe dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. These conditions can lead to serious health complications, including organ damage or even death.”

You do realize that we Finns aren't used to these kinds of temperatures, especially when in the past the usual temp for Finnish summer was around +20C and +25C was literally breaking heat records here. So stop gatekeeping temperatures/heat, some people aren't used to it.

Some people truly do not understand the extreme heat of Arizona. I visited Scottsdale AZ for business in July and thought I was going to instantly combust. I thought there was something wrong with the hotel AC as it was not cooling down. Called the front desk and was told that the AC cannot keep up with the outside temperature.

Whereas for us, right now a gallon of gas converted from imperial to metric and US to Canadian would cost $7.50. But I agree with you, it is really pretty awesome of the store to do that

Do they work? Those are notorious for failing after a couple years after the coolant runs out and being completely useless.

You just need to get the coolant refilled.

“In extreme heat waves, you should watch out for symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion, and headaches,” says Dr. Levine to Bored Panda. “These symptoms could suggest heat exhaustion or heat stroke, both of which require immediate medical attention to prevent serious health complications.”

Heat waves and their impact are much worse in the city, where the high temperatures are amplified by buildings, concrete parking lots, cars, and air conditioning units that radiate and emit heat long after the sun sets. The lack of trees and shade also greatly contributes to hotter city environments. This phenomenon is called the urban heat island effect and impacts 41 million people.

I love people like this. We need more people like this

That’s why it’s crucial for people, especially in urban areas, to take precautions during heatwaves. Dr. Levine recommends, “It is important to always keep your body cool and hydrated, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

It might be a good idea to limit your time in the sun in general, as sunburn reduces the body’s ability to release heat. To keep your home cooler, close the curtains during the hottest parts of the day and open the windows at night.

This is the part where you wet them down as often as necessary, they will be mad for a while, but will eventually understand that being damp helps. They may even begin to demand it in future. Cats are far more intelligent than a lot of people realise.

Our power (and thus our AC) went out last week during the heat of the day. We have one battery powered fan that's pretty strong (uses tool batteries). Who got it? The house pets. Got it angled so three species of fluffs got a breeze while the humans toughed it out.

    Beth Wheeler

Smart cats. My AC died 3 years ago and I had to replace the whole HVAC system. I work from home and couldn't go to the office and leave the house with the Windows closed because it would have killed my pets. My office is on the end of the house that gets sun all day. I had to call my boss 1 day and tell her I can't finish I'm getting sick from the he heat. I grabbed ice packs from the freezer and put them on my chest and back of my neck and pointed a fan at me, also had a wet rag on my face.

    View more comments

Don’t forget that furry pets struggle in the heat too. Dogs that walk on the pavement should wear protection from the hot surface and have plenty of water in their bowls. Cooling pads and doggy pools are also great options for cooling down your companion. For more on that, you can check out our previous article, where an expert veterinarian provided additional precautions you can take to protect them.

Some tourist wore flip-flops on the sand at Death Valley a few weeks ago. They melted/broke and the skin on his feet basically melted off. 3rd degree burns, full thickness. He was only like 40 feet away from pavement. Some people managed to carry him to the parking lot, but it was too hot for a helicopter to pick him up there. Rangers had to drive him to a higher elevation where it was cool enough for the helicopter (a balmy 109F).

In the summer I go out to walk the dogs before sun up. Cool and peaceful. But heat here in the UK is not like it is elsewhere. If it were we would not be walking except at the nearest beach or river.

Not heat related. It's fungus, edible one, likes moisture. I've seen a lot of it years ago, on wet, coolish( by comparison) summers.

Among US farmers it was always called Corn Smut and was considered a pest. In MExico its Huitlachoche... its a fungus and its delicious. Some call it the MExican truffle. It does look awful on the stalk, but shave off a bit and put in a taco......man it will change your life

From what I see on BP (a biased view at best, I know) parking in the US is mostly open air? Temperatures like this should make parking decks, subterranean ones in particular, vastly popular in Utah, Texas, Arizona, Nevada,... They save space, too, and shorten the walk to whatever building you want to enter a lot.

I live in Utah. Typically, the multi-level parking garages are built in the lower levels of most downtown buildings, reserved garages buildings at some other large buildings. But most parking is outdoor parking lots.

How do people manage in these temperatures when they’re unhoused, or in an apartment without AC? The poor are definitely hit harder by climate change.

I had some similar BS. Had a window unit for years then the owner sold and the new management wanted to renovate so they kept making up new rules, among them a series of reasons I could not keep my AC unit, which I proved false one after the other until finally not being able to deal with the harassment and leaving.

Chip them apart after leaving in fridge, or in the winter. In AZ there rarely is chocolate in vending machines and I personally carry coolers in my car for groceries. DO NOT ORDER anything that melts as delivery trucks do not have AC. I live 4 miles from grocery and anything frozen will melt by the time I get home if I don't bring ice.

That has been caused by something else. Glass does not break just by heat. Fast temperature changes can (t.ex. pouring hot water in a glass standing on a cold surface), but a sheet of glass lying in the sun? no way. Even if the sun slowly comes slowly over the glass lying in the shade it will warm gradually.

Glass will expand slowly and slightly in heat. If one side is hotter than the other or if there is no space to expand into, this will happen.

Yep! Saw it happen to a car with tinted windows parked, on a 103° day, right in front of me. The glass tried to expand, the tint wouldn't allow it, and the window went 'Zzzziiiinnngggg', then exploded. The pieces of glass were still vibrating on the ground.

Something similar can happen on roads, too. Here we call them road buckles. They often happen on roadways, and of course, it always seem to happen on busy roads during rush hour. It's a frustrating situation until crews can get through the heavy traffic to make repairs.

That's not from heat. It's from humidity. Specifically, the air inside the room is very humid, and condensing on the AC unit. A dehumidifier will fix this.

Air conditioning units are basically dehumidifiers that dump the hot air outside instead of inside. Most newer ones have a dry setting too.

Most of them with their clothes on. Why?? Are you not allowed to wear swimwear in public?

It's a Muslim country so you'll almost never see a person in a swimsuit. Man or woman.

Las Vegas Heatwave Was No Joke... We Fried An Egg - Cooked In Less Than 10 Minutes

Took a piece of polished sheet metal to create a reflective surface, and angled it to direct sunlight (it's currently 105°F outside). After 8 minutes - the surface heat of the skillet reached 250°F, and the egg cooked in 2 minutes.

Not impressive. Solar cookers can work in near freezing temps.

Yeah I remember doing this in the 80s as a science experiment in grade school. Efficient solar ovens have been around for decades.

It's called a solar oven, and yes, that's exactly how they work

I thought it got cold there at night and desert areas. I’ve never been so I don’t know the weather patterns. Even in Ohio if it’s 90f during the day it might be 60s-70s from 11pm-10am.

TIL mulch can truly spontaneously catch fire if it's piled to deep. It builds up heat and can really catch fire. It's an easy online search to confirm. :)

Not a heat thing. Chemical reaction. Some variations of styrene plastic, don't play well if they come in contact for extended periods of time, with other objects. Some aspect of the chemical makeup of the eraser caused a chemical reaction and started to effectively eat the styrene of the calculator.

Fake. Image popped up in 2023. Tail lights are made from polycarbonate plastic, which typically melts at temperatures of 288C to 316C (550F to 600F), meaning it was impossible for the lights to melt from the heat.

The curved metal reflector inside the lights could contribute, though
