I own some plate mail parts myself. Still, most of my armor is made of leather, but mostly for cost reasons. A full plate mail is really expensive cause it is always handmade and has to been adapted. But you are right, you can move pretty good when the weight is distributed evenly across your body. A backpack with the same weight but only on your back is harder to carry.

If you want to use a period weapon go for something heavy like a warpick or faltion or something of the sort. DO NOT USE A CHAINSAW. you will get zombie blood all over you and probably become a zombie yourself
