Not all heroes wear capes, and no one exemplifies this more than the brave souls at your local fast-food joint. The job itself is basically a blessing and a curse where employees try to navigate the complex world of customer service with a cheerful smile. There are the long hours, low pay, and lazy management that make it a tough and thankless experience. But at the same time, wholesome colleagues and side-splitting "special instructions" customers add to their orders work as the perfect mood booster workers didn't know they needed.

There’s not a dull day in the life of a fast-food worker, and people who proudly wear their green and yellow t-shirts know this from personal experience. We’re talking about Subway employees who work hard to provide you with a portion of the good stuff and should get the respect they most definitely deserve.

So today, we’re diving deep into the aspects of a sandwich artist's life, the good and the bad, courtesy of the 'Subway' subreddit. Although the community seems to be still growing, it provides a safe space for people to talk, share, love (and hate!) everything to do with the sandwich palace. We've gathered some of the best posts from the group, so continue scrolling to check them all out! Be sure to upvote your favorites and let us know what you think in the comments.

Psst! For more goodness from the 'Subway' subreddit, look no further than Bored Panda's earlier piece on this feature right here.

No no no, no. We have a flow chart with that managerial position listed so we HAVE to hire a manager! Almost verbatim what we heard at a company once. 3 supervisors were doing perfectly but they 'had to' hire for that position. Idiots

But that would mean showing appreciation of employees and that's not in the business model, we prefer our employees feel miserable and trapped until we decide to terminate them.

And that's why I quit after 12 years at the same place. Only reason I never got promoted to management is because the owner didn't like me.

I work in a medical lab. We have had to put signs up with "unacceptable behavior" including cursing, yelling and even biting. I think lock down has made people forget how to act in public. Or maybe they were just always a**holes and I dealt with it better.

This is awesome!!! Too few people understand that to fairly criticize something as being done badly means you should be able to do at least that level or better. If it's beyond your ability then maybe it's beyond anyone's ability, modify expectations to reality.Or just make your own freaking sandwich at home.( It won't taste the same because you aren't going to coat it in sugary/salty sauces.)

Ever heard the story of this one McDonald’s worker? First manager had her enter @ five in the morning, worked till it opened, leaves, second manager has her work the rest of the day, she cancels for school, suprise nobody shows up for work, she single-handedly handles the kitchen up until closing time, then second manager has her stay after to repack the boxes etc. (idk. One of the workers decided to reward her. The gift was a small bag of candy with about 5 small candy bars. And she worked the next day. That, my friends, is why she quit McDonalds.

I'm sure he was fired, because goodness knows a herd of Karen's came to get food after a day of screaming at young children in parks, and refusing to wear masks at Trader Joe's..they would have can in the next day and screamed at the manager, demanded corporates number and called the newspaper.

As the moderators state in the community description, the 'Subway' online group is dedicated to customers and employees of Subway, the sandwich chain. "Looking to talk about subway trains?" they ask, "You probably want r/subways", illustrating just how often Redditors mix the two forums together.

With over 26k members aka sandwich artists following the community, the group seems to be still growing. However, it already has some clear guidelines for fellow Subway enthusiasts to consider before sharing something with others. For example, posts must be strictly Subway-related, and spam is not tolerated. Redditors should also avoid revealing identifiable information, "that includes posting addresses, store numbers, or telephone numbers."

Thankfully, Subway-related memes are allowed — as long as they follow other rules. "Minimal effort, spam, and off-topic memes may be removed," the mods added.

Wow, those are two ungrateful sisters that deserve some serious high fives to their faces! Anyone that can put 63 sandwiches together in an hour, knowing FULL WELL that there were other customers to help the whole time (regardless of staff size during said hour) deserves so much more than these petty entitled JUICE POUCHES (bc I don't say douchebag). Like, a HUGE tip, a sincere verbal thank you/show of gratitude, & probably a positive written comment to the bosses. I'm just saying.

For our earlier piece on strange fast food orders that drive employees mad, we reached out to the team looking after the subreddit. One moderator, who preferred to stay anonymous, was more than happy to share their thoughts about the group.

Unfortunately, the origin of the group seems to remain a mystery. When we asked about the initial inspiration for the sub, the moderator explained that they were not yet around at that time. However, one person from their team has been present since the beginning, but he was not the original creator, who left the subreddit years ago.

It offers a perfect space for workers to vent their frustrations, seek advice, and find comfort from fellow employees about the difficult situations they face daily.

"When employees talk about their grievances, other employees will chime in with their own, or ways to help! Employees in the sub, past and present, are generally pretty supportive of other employees," they added.

I went into a Taco Bell and they were being weird like this. The kid at the front saw me and turned beet red. "I'm sorry ma'am." I said "Nah..I get it. You shoulda seen the s*** we pulled at McDonalds after the dining area closed when I was your age." Sometimes you've got to let off steam.

I worked overtime and we were technically closed. I had headphones on and were singing and dancing like crazy to the Last dance of Mary Jane. I turned around and in our entrance stood the most shocked fireman I have ever seen. He came to pick up an order and hoped that we were somehow still open. He was not quite prepared for it to meet instead me...

Ask any food service employee, and you’ll know that some customers have a way of annoying the people who serve them to the max. Specific actions and behaviors commonly associated with patrons that sandwich artists absolutely despise range anywhere from not knowing what they want beforehand to texting on their phones while ordering and touching the glass every single day.

And guessing from the abundance of posts in the community, weird orders customers make are also at the top of the list. They are quite a common category in the group, but thankfully, they often serve as a perfect source of entertainment. Or, as the mod told us, "It’s fun to see what people get requested, and others to share theirs in the comments!"

I was working fast food as a nineteen year old and a lady made the mistake of cursing me out just as my mom walked in. I honestly thought for just a second, that there was going to be murder done. My mom walked up to me and asked me what this lady's issue was, I told her . Karen, not realizing that my mother holding absolutely no charge of the establishment, had every right to kill over my scared self, looked smugly at me as my answer was truthful, that we had run out of her desired foodstuff and that my suggestion was not acceptable. My mother looked at her and said " was she rude to you?" " Well, no, but" " let me tell you one thing, this is my DAUGHTER. My only DAUGHTER. If you speak to my DAUGHTER like that again, you will be trying to tie my shoelaces through your nose because I'm going to kick your a s s so hard, got it?" I just took off my apron and prepared to leave, expecting to be fired. Nope. I was assured my job was safe, after my boss stopped laughing!

In Highschool, I worked at a diner, this huge (withholding name of religion) family came in at 7:59pm every Sunday. At least 15 people, they were very aware we closed at 8 pm on Sundays. The entire staff would, take the orders, serve the drinks, and cook the food, as a group. And serve it. Most of us off the clock, but together. And for the work we do, our boss would buy us pizza, or whatever. Because said nasty people, who did this every week? Refused to tip, argued everything on the receipt, and didn't want to pay service tax. We felt they needed more religion.

The should be a standard information for all places where food is served that after a certain time no more food will be served, the people who work there have more then enough to do without the a$$holes that think they are entitled to food at the last minute. The same with shopping on a Sunday, just why? There are so many hours in the rest of the week you can go shopping, just give the people that work retail a day off, they more then deserve it. As soon as being open on a Sunday doesn't pay off anymore, there will be a week deserved day of for those that work so hard to keep the costumers happy... But that's just mho ;)

In my country (Hungary), as cashiers are wired into some online system, you can't do this in stores, because if they let you pay your stuff even a minute after the official closing time, the store will be fined. So in this particular situation if you can't pay your order in one minute, there is nothing the employees could do.

    View more comments

The moderator also revealed that customers often criticize the fast-food restaurant chain, and they do not hold back. "Besides complaints about the app glitch posts, it would be customers blaming us for pricing, even though it is not the employees' fault. There have been a few cases of some customers harassing others in comments as well."

One man must be suited for the journey into the back freezer, one man must be suited to kill the pickle princess to make pickle slices, That man is this guy. Idk lol

Sammie 19, some people truly can't understand our situations (i.e., being poor). I live on Social Security as my only income. I also have Medicare. My SS BARELY covers my rent, utilities, and medical co-pays. I have a heart condition that requires a specific med. it costs $600 a month. That's almost HALF my SS. My Dr was giving me free samples; however, his pharmaceutical rep recently stop leaving these samples. Needless to say, I can't afford to buy itZ the manufacturer of it has a program to help get it at a reduced cost, BUT ONLY for people on "commercial" insurance plans. They don't offer this reduced rate if you are a recipient or f Medicare! How fûcked up is all this?? I worked my entire life for this. I'm heartbroken! :(

Sorry, I just wanted to add, I can't recall ever...since SS and Medicare...having a $100 balance in my bank account. I struggle to keep a positive balance! A $100 after everything is paid? I would feel rich!! Sorry fellow pandas for the rant. Thank you for allowing me to vent! I'm sorry if I offended anyone! :(

But even though patrons complain about the food or the quality of the service, they still return to their favorite joints over and over again. It’s hard to argue with the fact that fast food is delicious, convenient, and comforting. This is probably the reason why 36% of American adults consume a portion on any given day.

I would pass them out to homeless... When I was homeless, once a week in the area my brother and I were staying in, the Starbucks employees would give us a little baggy of expired pastries! Went to a retail customer service training seminar once, maybe 20 people. We were supposed to do role play to work on dealing with difficult customers. My coworker was told to be a difficult customer so she chose one common to us. The 'cellphone lady', asks questions of you but doesn't get off the cell to hear the answer. The presenter stopped her and told her it was wrong to make up something unrealistic. Disagreement ensued. Seminar was ended early by presenter.

Would not believe how annoying it is to take a drive thru order while someone is talking on their phone. It like talking to someone who don't care. And but you are suppose to be nice and make shore you get their order right. I've even had them get mad at me for asking them if there order is right.

My favorite is people so busy with their phone, they don't see/hear the window open or see me standing there trying to hand them their coffee or even their card back 3 seconds after they gave it to me. When I worked at dunkin I started standing there not saying a word to see how long it took them to wake up because I got tired of having to get their attention 50 times a day. The longest one I had was I think 5 minutes.

When I ran a snack bar I made people who stood at the register, talking on their phone without ordering, an offer- put down the phone or I'm taking the order of the person behind them. I honestly could not give two shits if people are unhappy with me, so it worked quite well.

It's the syrup the soda fountain machines use, its mixed with carbonated water as it's dispensed. You have to open the end of the box and attach a hose to a plastic bag inside. The bag can fall out making it easier to break. I broke one once it was $60

Just out of curiosity, what's the appropriate procedure there? A written list, or just keep verbally informing the staff about the next sandwich?

It depends on the current situation, like how busy is the store and how many employees are working the bain. When you are greeted, simply ask: I have 3 subs to order, how should I start?

For those that don't know, the appropriate way to order anything is for the server to know how many orders there will be to start. " I need to order 2 sandwiches" and then they will ask you for the first one and while that is being prepared another worker will probably start the second one.. " I need to order 60 sandwiches." And then they will tell you that a minimum 24 hour notice needs to be given to allow for prep time.

Watching them make the sandwich will show you when to say the next ingredient. Start with size, bread type and variety of sandwich. Need 3 subs? Get that out as well…then proceed with the maker as it’s prepped. Easy. This is how I trained my regulars when I was at Subway. Made my life so much easier.

I've had employees want the full count up front and employees want to do one complete then the next complete. It depends on the employee, some can make great sandwiches fast but need to hear the info one bit at a time or they overload and freeze up. Others need the summary of the order up front, then details as each sandwich is made, kind of batch loading. So I tend to state number of sandwiches then let the employee take the lead on getting info and clearly answer the questions asked.

I came to work and saw this, cleaned out everything as best I could while working. When my co-worker came in and I asked him to finish the dishes while I rang up customers, he went back to the backroom, came out after a few saying they were done. I finished up and went home from the graveyard shift and before the manager came in. She called and asked who did the dishes. I said my coworker finished them. She said "You do them from now on...he just rinsed them and put them away. I found tuna salad all in the scooper still." I said "Make him do it properly then...why am I getting in trouble for his crappy work ethic."

A big, fat NOPE, for me!! I would turn around and go home. I would then call the manager and say, "I can NOT PROPERLY open the store when the as*holes on the previous shift, did NOT PROPERLY close the store! I will NOT do my job, AND, their jobs, as well! Call me when you get this problem corrected. If I don't hear from you, you can mail me my final paycheck. Good bye!" Do not tolerate this now because, if you do, it will become the norm, not the abnormal! I wish you well in your endeavors!

It's a catering order. They had to go in early to make it. When it gets paid for, all sandwiches get put on that hour, not the hour they were actually made. Had to go in at 4AM to start that order.

Also, fir everyone wondering, they didn't make 185 sandwhiches in one hour. This is obviously a catering pick up. It probably took them all morning to make them and they were ready for pickup by 10am. They were then tabulated at the time they were paid for. I'm not implying it's not impressive, I just don't want anyone thinking their workers are literally Superman, but at making Sandwhiches. Like that bad guy from Wordgirl...

They can't be put into the system until they are rung up or processed most likely, so large orders like 63 sandwich lady, are made and put in all at once. Seems the most logical, but have not worked at subway so correct me if I'm wrong.

Not as scary as you think. Looks like bread dough, left in the proofer overnight. The proofer is sort of like a sauna, for dough. It provides a warm, humid environment, for frozen dough to thaw, and the yeast to work, so the dough can rise. But in this case, it was left in to long, and over proofed, meaning it rose too much and became a gloppy, gooey mess. And it won't bake or taste right, so it can't be used . Sucks to clean up, and sucks for food loss. But I've seen much worse. EDIT, somebody said it's something else, called a retarder. But same basic concept, for the most part.

Everyone saying it's not baked fresh. This is the same way Walmart or any major grocery store makes their bread. I was a decorator at Walmart for 10 years. The dough comes in frozen and shaped. You put it on pans and let it thaw and proof (rise). Then you bake it.

I want regular mayo. They said they didn’t have regular mayo. I then pointed to the sign, where in print, it listed mayo THEN light mayo. They said that the regular mayo was only used to make the tuna salad. I said then you DO have regular mayo? And he was like ???? We do. Thank god it was a buddy behind the counter or I would have exploded. Thank you to all the sandwich artists out there: we do love you!!

I had an aunt who went with us to McD's for breakfast. She asked for just an English muffin and they wouldn't sell it to her. They're counted, you know. 1 muffin =1 sausage= 1 egg= 1 cheese slice. No substitutions.

I worked in a fast food restaurant for years and I still don't understand why people complain about customers coming 3 minutes before close. That's of course if they are paid as long as it takes to clean after closing. Our place didn't have any kind of "kitchen closes 15 minutes before closing" rule, so we took customers until it was exactly closing time. If the food had to be made after closing, then it was made after closing. Everyone got paid exactly until everything was done and ready to leave. I've heard and read some stories about people not getting paid for cleaning after closing time and then I absolutely understand the annoyance about last minute customers.

Uh, no. We chose the toppings. TPTB are the ones who decided to do away with the V cut in favor of a side slice; to reduce the amount of meat & cheese to be only 1 slice thick; to discontinue the good bread & favor of the tough crust/dry inside, flavorless bread they use now. Subway *does* suck.

I'm guessing they meant "don't ladle sauce onto the sandwich since that turns the bread to mush," and not literally "there shouldn't be a drop of sauce on it." If it *is* the latter, then grab a few frozen ones from the back & toss them in the microwave.

To make it just add the green shaker (I can't think of the name of the food in it) and then add a hefty sprinkling of cheese to the top of it, bake it for a bit (it's been two months I don't remember how long) and then once it's done add more cheese, bake, and there you go! That's all it is!!

Probably not. When we had to climb on the counter to change signs in different places I've worked, we took our shoes off, too. Much less dirt and germs, than having nasty restaurant shows with old food on the bottom, on the counter. BUT we had socks on. Not bare feet. And either way, we always sanitized the counter afterward.

I guess this is a new thing that all Subways will eventually be switching too. “ In the USA it will be mandatory if your store is in the USA it doesn’t matter if the owner wants it or not after all the stores in a market has the slicers installed the distributors for that area will start transitioning to the meat logs for turkey, ham, pepperoni and salami. And stores will no longer be able to order pre sliced meat and will only be able to order the meat logs. And since a store has to order the food through a subway distributor the only choice to not slice meats would be for the owner to sale the store or turn it into a local non franchised sub shop.”

And you can't legally use it if you're under 18. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) prohibits workers under the age of 18, in non-agricultural occupations, from operating powered equipment considered hazardous, including food slicers and meat grinders.

Turn. The. Front. Of. The. Labels. So. They. Face. Out. Honest to God. This is not rocket science.

They get put in there the way they are grabbed. Nobody is making enough to go out every 10 or so purchases and ensure labels are facing the right way. Even if loaded perfectly they will rotate. Also sometimes intentional because the lights cause the label to fade and if customers see a fade label they think suffering is wrong with the product
