It’s scary to think that you can learn a lot about a person just by looking at them. You know, based on how they’re dressed and accessorized, how they behave, their mannerisms, stuff like that. It’s like looking into a person’s social media profile. And knowing how to read the signs, of course.

Well, folks have been pointing out the signs in a Reddit thread, listing the behaviors, mannerisms, looks and other personal choices a person has made that reveal more than the person would probably be comfortable with. Or not. I don’t assume.

Bored Panda has collected the best and most spot-on responses and has compiled a list that you can find below (not above or on either side of this page, but don’t let me stop you from exploring your browser), so scroll right on there, upvote, comment, and mayhaps share some things Redditors missed in this list!

A coworker and I were talking about how some students were misbehaving and being incredibly disrespectful to the environment around them (throwing trash or food on the ground, not picking up after themselves, making messes in bathrooms, etc) and I said maybe they needed to spend a day working with the custodians (you know, learning who they’re making life harder for and maybe gaining a bit of respect for those they’re impacting by working alongside them and picking up these messes they’re making) and my coworker didn’t think any of that, her immediate response was “oh yes! Then they’ll see what happens when you’re uneducated and barely employable!” I responded with “Many of our custodians have far more education and varied work histories than you realize.” That one conversation showed me so much more about her than anything else and I have avoided conversations with her since.

So much this!!!! If someone can't express a political view without name calling, citing conspiracy theories, or telling outright lies, I will most likely never speak to them again. I can express my political views without dragging someone else down, and if the person that I am talking to cannot do the same, I lose all respect for them. One of my brothers has opposing political views from me, and we can intelligently debate our sides without resorting to verbal abuse. I still love and respect him.

People treat politics partly as if it was allegiance to a sports team and partly as a reflection of their character. The latter may have some validity, especially if your "political opinion" involves discrimination or outright hate, but the former is just silly.

In general I think Australia is less gung-ho about politics than the US seems to be, but since moving to the country I have noticed there are a few more people than in the city, that find it hard to also listen to your views. I'm very glad for the second two comments. For people who have suffered repeated abuse they couldn't remove themselves from, especially in childhood, standing up for yourself even after you are safe is really hard. As an adult I'm still learning how to speak up for myself and not be a people pleaser, because at one point my survival depended on me just enduring and/or de-escalating it, so that response is pretty deeply engrained in me no matter the particulars of the experience. Be kind and patient with people, sometimes bravery doesn't look the way you expect it to...

Hmmm I think this depends. I live in a big city and ignore almost anyone asking me for money at this point. It’s safer to pretend they don’t exist cause sometimes you interact and someone is now following you or cursing you out/threatening you and I’ve learned as a small woman that it’s safer to just keep to myself and just keep walking. But I also live in Chicago.

But do I care about the tent cities or tents in parks? Not really. There have been many tents popping up in a neighborhood park by me and people are fighting for cops to invade/kick them out and I’m like “eh let them be if you aren’t gonna give them solutions”. My political ideology aligns with leftists where I want safety nets and social programs to support people in unfortunate situations (I also support universal housing or income policies) but someone outside the CTA station asking me for change, I usually just walk by or softly shake my head and keep going.

I don’t think that makes me a bad person though. But hey, I might be totally wrong.

I grew up in a pretty bad situation (tl;dr was adopted and was treated like a non-human, basically) and one of my major defense/coping mechanisms is what I call "Class Clown Behavior". I tell self-deprecating jokes at my expense, I tell self-deprecating "funny" stories about myself, anything to make other people laugh. When I got older, I realized that a lot of the time, even though I do listen to people sincerely, I also sometimes end up telling a lot of stories about myself/things that happened to me. So I made a mental adjustment and have been working on talking less about "ha ha let me tell you about when my mom held a gun to my chin" and I've been trying to be more considerate about my audience. It's hard, but I'm learning!

I don't see what you could learn about a persons character by the state of their home. For example, people with adhd will often leave things in organized piles of clutter. That doesn't make them inconsiderate, it just works better for them. I think it's fair to judge how they treat other peoples belongings though.

Folks In This Online Thread Point Out Random Giveaways That Say A Lot About A Person (40 Things) Imho how open they are open to eating other types of food from other cuisines. People who only eat only one type of food (ie only Chinese food and nothing else) are generally very stringent and not as easy-going or open-minded as the person who is open to trying out all types of food. It honestly reveals a 'lot' and is a random thing.

Also. How a person walks. Do they walk fast or slow, with confidence or nervously, straight or crooked, aggressive/forceful or passive or demure or relaxed or without a care in the world, are they trying to look a certain way or are they just being what they are. You can tell a lot about a person just by how they walk.

I disagree with the note on walking, at least to a point. For years, my walk was described as "overconfident, cocky, condescending, etc" by people I don't necessarily know closely. In reality, my "swagger" came from compensating for a limp I've had since childhood due to one leg being half an inch shorter than the other. Sometimes, a walk is just a method of moving from point A to point B.

THANK YOU!!! Admittedly, hands are my favorite non-sexual part of a body and I have spent way too much time looking at them. There's so much you can tell by a hand and my friends just don't believe my thesis about it. Hands are the gateway to knowing someone.

Over. Easier to grab and no disadvantages unless you have cats or small children.

You have such a good point there, especially with the cats. That's the best argument I've ever heard to put it the wrong way.

I’ve legit had someone (an adult) tell me they put it on under because they are right handed. I told them most people are right handed, and most people put it over. They were speechless and changed their ways after that.

And what does it reveal about people who have such strong views on this that they're willing to debate it with strangers online?

I like french peasant food.

Simple, delicious and as a side note great when you're broke lol.

College days had quite a bit of Flageolet beans, ratatouille and homemade french bread.

Why would you judge someone hobbies? Unless they are a serial killer , I see no need to judge other peoples hobbies.

Bit of a late reply but I love this! I'm in my 40s and have a pet rock, haha.

What does that signify tho?

artof_fiert replied:
You were lonely, dont trust yourself with a pet / you want more pets but cant afford that, and you needed someone to travel with. Basically, you need friends.

WTF is with artof_fiert's rather cruel "diagnosis"? That's BS, IMO. I have two cats and a puppy and a vivarium of isopods, I've had pets my whole life, I have just enough friends, and I STILL have a pet rock. :p I think it means someone is imaginative and knows how to have fun and how to make fun of themselves just a little.

Music tastes. It usually is a pretty good representation of their worldview.

OK, I like Dillenger Escape Plan, Tom Waits and Cindy Lauper.

What does that say about me?

normVectorsNotHate replied:
Ehh not necessarily. I don't really pay attention to the lyrics of the songs I like at all, I just like them for their beat.

Secure_Chipmunk_1466 replied:
I feel the same way, but some songs if the lyrics just weird me out too much (Think Stacey's Mom), I won't listen to it.

Edit: Actually, I will listen to it, just not put it on my playlist.

While it is true for *some* people, I do not think that musical taste is a good representation of a person's worldview. Case-in-point: Rage Against The Machine. In recent years, there has been plenty of "wHeN dId ThEy BeCoMe PoLiTiCaL" opinions about them. I think, in general, judging someone on their musical taste is quite superficial.

There’s not really good or bad. You can just see if like they really value looking good, if they like working out, if they’re more chill, etc.

I've got 2 pairs they are the same exact trekking shoe, waterproof bc if I have to cross something like a puddle of mud I just go for it. One has a cane (not sure if that's the right word but it extends a bit covering ur ankle) and the other no, same model same brand.

Fox players like to take charge and overwhelm.

Falco players like to combo and play it safe.

Marth players like to have control and maintain it.

Sheik players like to weave a web and punish.

And any other characters are for legends that play for fun.
