Chances are, you’ve made at least one of those stupid posts on social media that makes you look back on it with a burning sense of facepalm. Well, if you can relate, then you’re in good company. According to a YouGov Omnibus survey, over half of American social media users reported posting or texting something they regretted afterward. One in six regularly rue their decision to post at least once a week, with Millennials being the most common offenders.

The participants who admitted to sharing dumb Facebook posts in the past said they are less anxious about sounding silly online compared to two years ago. They are much more worried, however, about damaging their reputation at work — 22 percent surveyed said they are concerned their questionable actions might negatively affect their careers.

Moreover, the survey revealed that 14 percent feared that sharing misguided images or messages online may hurt their relationships with loved ones. Women were more likely to fret about stupid Facebook posts damaging their relationships than men. Interestingly, when it comes to the time and place these mistakes occur, they usually happen at home, late at night when tired, or after having a few drinks.

It's really both. And add in "fear." I used to get s**t like this all the time from my Conservative relatives before I cut them off. They just send it without thinking, and then when you ask a question-- "Are you sure that's what this is?"-- they get FURIOUS. "I'm just trying to help!" "You never know!" "I'm sure it's happening somewhere!" Their racist tendencies and inability to think critically are ratcheted up by the propaganda about "OMG, brown people!!11!" They think that their fear means it's more important to get as many alarming -- but really f*****g stupid -- "messages" out there. It's the firehose approach.

I’ve experienced a species of this. My mother is Mexican (I’m adopted) and she is 100% a Trump bootlicker for some incomprehensible reason. (We live in SoCal.) She used to send me video clips and news links to try and convert me to his glorious orange wisdom. I told her I hadn’t voted since I was 18 (I’m 40 now) but I was coming out of voting retirement to vote AGAINST Trump (both times, lol). My sister, who is my parents’ biological child and is basically a clone of my mother, will still send me offensive anti-Biden memes. I usually just ignore them, but I finally snapped and replied “Why do you send these? You know I hate politics, I hate Trump, and I don’t think these are funny.” Her reply? “It’s just a joke, jeez!” Then I remember when I turned 10, my mom got me a birthday cake that said “To My Not So Favorite Daughter”. Yeah, it’s not a joke. They’re terrible people. I need to cut off contact. :(

Hated those things-the uncomfortable positions and pain in your knees..... Except when there is an actual tornado, then holy s**t that's terrifying...We did them when REALLY bad/strong hurricanes happened too, the kind where the western wall of the storm is notorious for creating tornadoes. Although the hurricane one was kinda cool, we leaned against the wall talking and watching the storm through the windows-trees we're bent sideways, plus hail at the latter half. The fact that most right wing conservatives live in the bible belt (deep south) yet don't know what this is, is straight up baffling to me. I live in South Alabama in case you were wondering.

"The stories, images and posts that feature prominently in our social media timelines are often the most likely to elicit emotional responses from us."
