This Artist Reimagines Studio Ghibli Movies Into Stunning Watercolor Paintings, And Here Are 14 Of Them
Fans of Japanese anime movies will instantly recognize the inspiration found in these beautiful paintings by Louise Terrier.
The French artist, painter, and sculptor takes well-known anime characters from Studio Ghibli (the animation house behind such famous anime films as My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Bakery) and adds her own creative flair to some of the most beloved heroes. The Annecy-based Miyazaki fan says she’s scribbled since the day her parents put a pencil in her hands, and as she writes on her Facebook page, “When people ask me: where do those creative ideas come from? I would say I don’t know! But it’s just a part of me, like my nose in the middle of my face! Even though my studies take the most part of my time, the pleasure of watercolor paintings never leaves me.” We’re very glad to hear that!

Howl's moving castle :) (writing the names for the people that want to watch, but don't know which movie it is)
If you are not very familiar with Studio Ghibli, it is a Japanese animation studio that has produced some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed animated films in history. It was founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki.
To-to-ro-to-to-ro, to-to-ro-to-to-ro! If you've been in the forest's trees, for such a very, very, long tiiiime you just might meet to-to-ro-to-to-ro
Some of Studio Ghibli's most famous films include "My Neighbor Totoro," "Spirited Away," "Princess Mononoke," "Howl's Moving Castle," and "Ponyo”, most of which Louise has recreated in her paintings.
I realize this is supposed to be fan art, but canon Princess Mononoke and Ashitaka don't end up together romantically in the movie. To quote the TV Tropes page for the movie (under the category Characters; Ashitaka, Unresolved Sexual Tension: "While Mononoke Hime (also known as San) does come to reciprocate his feelings, at the end, they realize that neither of them could give up their present lifestyles for each other, and the two part, promising to still meet each other every so often."
These movies often explore themes of nature, environmentalism, coming of age, and the importance of human connections. One of the unique features of their animation is the attention to detail in the background art, which often features stunning landscapes and intricate details that bring the world to life.
That scene is so beautiful I want a garden like that and a little office… or greenhouse
Studio Ghibli's films have won numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for "Spirited Away" in 2002. The studio has also been recognized for its contributions to the animation industry and popular culture, with fans around the world drawn to its unique style and storytelling.
