@ Rissie - you have no idea what his intent was by putting "lady". For some, it is just another word for "female" or "woman" etc. For some it can also be meant in a patronising, misogynistic or another negative way unfortunately but please don't jump to the conclusion that bad bleep was using it in the way you just described.

A lady? Being an absolute gentleman without getting your intentions is just as stupid. Treating people like equals is not doing the exact opposite of being an asshole. It's treating someone like you would like to be treated yourself. I doubt you would be liked to call a gentleman all the time. Ladies and gentleman take pride in their obvious gender roles by being overly cautious of not hurting the other ones feewings. Pretty sure we're past that.

It's honestly kind of sad how much people suck, especially at public school. My english teacher did make a good point on how it's disrespectful to make fun of public school because of how much work the teachers put in, but (at least where I go to school) they need to figure out ways to control the racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, especially at my school. My school is in the South so like they probably don't wanna risk it, but it's better than letting student's mental health literally crumble from harassment & bullying on something as small as the color of their skin or who they love. Excuse my rant lol, I got a little carried away

It was a FEMALE teacher who called the outfit distracting, and she also said she was worried it would be distracting to the male teaching assistant. Regardless, it was totally wrong to call the student out in front of the class, & totally wrong to send her home.

It's a party dress, does not matter its on top of a turtle neck, its not a school dress code. Can she wear a bra on top of a turtle neck? It will not reveal anything either.

Often schools will have rules about clothing, like skirts being a certain length, how far down a neckline can go, or just "no inappropriate attire." So yes, sometimes a teacher will judge whether an outfit is inappropriate or not. The way this teacher responded was certainly not alright, and this teacher's reasons for doing it were just creepy. I did not mean that that teacher's response was good. I was only saying that restrictions on clothing in school aren't wrong, however HOW teachers enforce it certainly can be (like in this situation. I am sorry if I was confusing. As with all other crimes, violent actions towards women are always the fault of the attacker.

It was a female teacher, the reactionwas wrong, but so was the dress.

Maybe there could be a dress code for everyone or something? Like ALL garments- both skirts and shorts- have to go to the knee. If the girls have to cover their shoulders, so do the boys. And don't use a teacher's gross feelings to justify doing anything. Just have an agreed-upon standard equally for everyone. Would that be better?

In high school we weren't allowed to have holes in our jeans not even in the knees. Idk how showing your knees was inappropriate. I understood if it was near the crotch but it was always in the knees bc that was the style. This was like 2006-2010.

Ninja, I think anything that applies equally would be “better,” for sure. But, that knee rule is so dumb. Everything you’d wear besides pants would just have to be ugly, since stylish shorts just don’t come that long much of the time. I don’t think we should tell kids that fashion is a bad thing or it’s for adults only. I don’t think we should tell them to hide their knees. Or shoulders. Just leave them alone about clothes as a whole unless they’re bullying each other or revealing private parts. I honestly can’t stand kids or teens but that’s why I ignore them. I don’t think it’s right for us to punish them collectively over clothes like this. Honestly the fact that this girl put together a cool outfit is more interesting to me since teens tend to dress really stupidly / attention seeking.

The high-school my brother went to did. Back in the first half of the 2000s. Boys had to abide by a kind of a strict dress code, because the head master believed it saves their dignity, while girls have none by default. Yeah, messed up. Eventually, years later, that headmaster was thrown out.

That is BS! I worked in a school for twenty years and we had a dress code for everyone; boys, girls, white, black, purple, etc!!! The code was the same for all. Things like skirts and shorts a certain length, no undergarments showing, pants worn at the waist, tank top straps must be 3 fingers width. Some students would always try to push the rules but we were fair and consistent with everything being spelled out.

I think they just don't have a dress code for boys in general, regardless of race, bc I guess they think every male is a crazy, objectifying perv, so instead of teaching boys good behavior, i guess they blame the girls. But the fact the male teacher thinks this way is disgusting.

Lol thanks Rex. I’m a dudette btw! One who wore jeans with lightning bolts on the butt and got told not to stand up in class for the rest of the day. I worked at a fashion store and we had to wear the label, so I had a ton of stuff that was just fly. I’m in my 30s now and I really wish I had kept those. They were super dope.

What difference does it make. It’s 5th grade kids. Babies, practically. Babies can wear short shorts. Even teens. If your butt and privates / genitals aren’t hanging out, it shouldn’t make a difference.

In my HS it was. It just said "shorts must be longer than your fingertips"

At my school the only thing guys can't wear at cutoff sleeves....I am offended deeply by my schools dress code.

Yup that is about right...the teacher that I had last year dress coded most girls for very little things...he was a guy.

Nahhh. Nobody wants to see your cheeks flappin’ in the wind in class. As someone who wears crop tops and booty shorts with regularity, there’s still a time and a place. There’s a difference between a normal dress (like the girl’s) and super casual fun clothes. Like I’m not gonna wear shorts and a bikini top to traffic court, or a college class if I were in college. But I’ll wear it to the store / donut shop / out for a walk, etc. There’s a time and place to have your tiddays poppin’ and school ain’t it.
