“I Want To Cry Just Thinking About What Happened”: Person Called Out For Their Hygiene

If there were a competition for the most scrutinized part of our appearance, hair would easily be a top contender. People always seem to have strong opinions on how it should look and the best way to care for it.

One college student on Reddit learned this the hard way. After admitting they don’t always wash their hair with shampoo, they were ridiculed by both their teacher and classmates. The harsh criticism left them feeling completely shattered. Scroll down for the full story.

The college student casually mentioned that they don’t always wash their hair with shampoo

The teacher, upon hearing this, publicly ridiculed them in front of the entire class

Experts weigh in on how often you should be washing your hair

Maintaining good hygiene is important for staying healthy and preventing the spread of germs. But that doesn’t mean you need to wash your hair every day, or even use shampoo every time.

“I have always said, ‘It’s fine to go a few days without shampooing,’” says Alli Webb, professional hairstylist and founder of Drybar. “For hair that’s normal in terms of oiliness and medium weight, I sometimes tell my clients to go as long as they can without shampooing.”

The reason for this is that shampoo traps oils, and using it too often can dry out your hair, making it prone to breakage, explains Angela Lamb, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Breakage can be especially common in certain hair textures, like Black hair, which tends to be more fragile. This could also apply to the OP of the Reddit story who mentioned their hair is extremely frizzy and dry.

“Hair produces a natural oil called sebum, and shampoo is an emulsifier that captures and traps excess oil, dirt, and product residue, which you then rinse out to clean the hair,” says Lamb.

Sebum plays a vital role in keeping both hair and skin healthy. It makes up 90% of lipids—fat molecules—on the skin’s surface, locking in moisture and shielding against UV radiation and other environmental damage. Overusing shampoo can strip away this protective layer, affecting the hair’s overall health and resilience.

Experts note that only certain groups need to wash their hair daily. “Those with very fine hair, people who exercise frequently and sweat a lot, or those living in particularly humid climates,” says Carolyn Goh, MD, assistant clinical professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

For most people, washing with shampoo every 2 to 3 days is perfectly fine, and in some cases, you can stretch it further. “But no matter how your hair feels, don’t go longer than 14 days without washing,” Lamb advises.

People in the comments were quick to defend the student, noting that each hair type has its own care needs

Some users even urged the student to report the teacher

You will find most hairdressers advise against washing your hair daily as it strip's your natural oils. It's recommended to wash your hair 1-3 times a week, depending on hair type.

I have to. I've straight, flat and very thin hair (it's a family trait, not related to health issues or bad diet) and if I don't wash them every day (or every second day when air is more dry) they look oily and lanky. But I know that's a problem specific to me and most people don't wash them every day.

I used to either wash or condition my long curly hair every day then realised it is a massive ballache and not good for my hair. People can be very naive and ignorant. That said, when I had short hair, I did run my hands through it a lot (I have Trichotillomania - a condition where I compulsively pick hair out so my hands were on my hair all the time until I grew out a grey patch in my favourite spot). If you are not hands on with your hair all the time, it won't need washing for days.

What kind of class was this? The teacher and students are clearly idiots. Washing your hair daily will turn it from dry to greesy pretty quickly and easily. If it were me, I would go to see his head of faculty or the college main office to complain. No teacher should be calling out students either directly or indirectly in front of others. How they handled this entire situation is not only inappropriate, but their comments and personal opinion on what classes as good hygiene were inaccurate. I would tell someone how you made you feel. Some people make mention that there is a lot of blame culture these days, and that's only true because more of the population than ever are educated on what's right and what's wrong and they call them out when they are indeed wrong. This teacher was wrong, and needs to be told so in the appropriate manner. You don't have to go to the faculty head or college office and make it a massive complaint. Just tell them how it made you feel and how it affected u

It seems like there is even a movement going of washing yourself muliple times a day. That is extremely bad for your skin and hair. You should use soap and shampoo sparingly. I washed my hair daily for years, my mom is a hairdresser and used to jokingly make fun of me because hardly anyone she knew did that. I've finally got down to 2 times a week, sometimes 3. My sister in law is also a hairdresser and washes her hair every 9-10 days. In other words, that teacher doesn't know what the hell she's talking about.

I have fine hair that used to be oily from washing it too often. Now I wash my hair once a week it's thicker and less oily. I wash twice and condition, not only curly hair doesn't need washing every day. If you are exercising/ sweating a lot each day your hair could probably need washing or rinsing more often. The teacher is a fool who needs to be reported for singling this person out.

I have oily hair so it depends on the time of year. Winter, I wash it every 2 or 3 days. Summer, every day. My wife has fine frizzy hair and can go 4 to 5 days without washing it. Otherwise she'd look like a blow dried pomeranian!

I empathize; you know that "talk" your folks give you? My mom kinda díed before we got to that point. My aunt whom I lived with assumed I already knew: my cousin saw it as another thing to bully me over and her friends did too. It took one of my teachers calling my aunt before anyone told me about the wonders of deodorant cos I couldn't smell myself. Even now I'm self conscious about my possible body odor.

Even as a white girl with fine straight hair, I can't wash mine every day. It's prone to get greasy. Before I stopped washing it everyday I could go 36 hours max before I had to wash it, it would get that greasy. Now that I have changed my routine and usually wash my hair 4 days a week on average I can go 2 days between washing if I had to

Thinner, finer hair can get oily faster than thicker or curlier hair which tends towards dryness. White people are more likely to have thinner, finer hair than many people of color. (There are exceptions to this on both sides, of course.) So, even if a white person needs to shampoo daily, that doesn't mean everyone does.

This post is FIVE MTHS OLD. That said , your teacher needs to be reported. I wash my hair once a week. Shampooing to much is unnecessary and can damage and strip your hair. You are rinsing it with water which is fine. FFS is there an update on this ? I am so triggered by this teachers unrealistic unethical behavior. Where did this take place for a teacher at the university ( collage) level to be able to speak like this.

This teacher likely equates washing hair with just generally washing, and if you say you don't wash your hair daily then it MUST mean you're not showering or bathing at all. Even then, unless your career leaves you covered in dirt, human stuff, animal stuff, or grease, a daily shower isn't particularly necessary. It can wreck your skin if you can't afford the time or products required to replenish your natural skin oils from being constantly washed off.

I wash my hair once or twice a week .That again depends when I am at home,I don't need to go out so my remains clean . While during college days it gets dirty naturally as classes are held almost everyday . What I feel is most shampoos are harmful for our hair.Too much chemicals do harm your hair.I find soap as a better alternative or a medicated one .

It was suggested at one time to wash your hair every day. I think maybe the shampoo people thought it up because shampoos were coming out claiming to be safe enough to wash your hair every day. They assumed that you would also wash your hair since you shower every day. Many don't shower every day, but wash themselves to keep clean.

I have curly hair. It was straight when i was born, the progressively got curlier. My mother and my sisters have stick straight hair. Mom had no idea how to manage it, so she just had it cut short. Wasnt until i started running track in 10th grade that i kearned from my tesmmates how to manage it. Learned about "the kitchen" and how knotty it can get, hair oil, etc. I cannot wash my hair everyday. It will ruin it. And every 4 months, i straight up pour olive oil on it. Now my sister has straight hair and if she doesnt wash it often, it looks oily.

Only people that work in dirty conditions or sweat a lot need to.

I have waist-length hair and I wash it twice a week, it's too much to manage otherwise. My hair isn't greasy/dirty and it doesn't smell.

My husband has dreads and washes his hair twice a day. He sweats throughout the night so washes his hair in the morning and he is a concreter so has to wash his hair after work.

OP, try cowash. It's a conditioning wash, not really a shampoo. It helped my out of control frizz and dryness. I use the I Am Me brand, Wal-Mart here sells it, as well as beauty sullpy stores like Sally Anne

I wash my hair every two days (unless I had a day like today where it was super hot and I was all gross and sweaty after work) and less when I’m not working (weekends/holidays) I’m a teacher.

print out a bunch of articles about proper hair washing and put them on the teacher's desk, on top of reporting them

I don't wash my hair every day but did anyone caught on that OP doesn't use shampoo either? Doesn't rinse in between but doesn't use shampoo is a recipe for smelly oily hair. Yurk.

That was not what was said in the article. They stated that he couldn’t find a good shampoo and that they sometimes only rinsed it with water. Thus only somtimes.

A lot of "hygiene rules" are based more on cultural expectations than on actual hygiene needs. For many people, it is absolutely not necessary to wash your hair that often.

Many of my girlfriends didn't wash their hair everyday because it wasn't good for. Different hair has different requirements.

Good hair routine: condition every day, wash once a week, supplement Biotin and Collagen. Luscious locks of flowing hair

Word of caution for some of us regarding the Biotin and the Collagen. Either can make for a horribly uncomfortable digestive system!!

My dad won’t let me go to work unless I wash my hair every single day. He doesn’t recognize that it’s not good to wash it everyday.

I haven’t washed my hair for at least ten years. I rinse it regularly, but haven’t used shampoo or needed conditioner in that time. It’s not greasy, it’s not dirty, and it’s definitely not noticeable. Professor is both an aßhole, -and- a flaming ignoramus.
