Honor Student Gets Suspended, Banned From Graduation And Almost Arrested For Wearing This Shirt

You’d imagine that a student with a grade point average of 4.4 and multiple scholarships would have to do something pretty extreme to get suspended from school for two weeks AND banned from their graduation, right? Wrong. Because this student from Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina just got suspended, and almost ARRESTED, for nothing more than wearing a shirt. It wasn’t emblazoned with cuss words. Nor did it contain offensive imagery. It was, as you can see below, just a normal-looking shirt, but her high school principal said it violated the Hickory Ridge dress code.

Summer was sitting in the cafeteria last week when the principal told her to cover the offending item of apparel with a coat. Despite Summer complying with the request, the principal, this time accompanied by the school security officer, then sent her to the control room to change her shirt entirely.

“The security guard was within five feet of me,” Summer told WCNC. “He had his hand on his gun. The principal said, ‘I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.’” This time Summer refused and ended up being suspended for “insubordination.” She’s also been banned from all end-of-year events, which includes her own graduation. What do you think? Was the principal right to enforce the rules, or has she gone too far? Let us know in the comments below. (h/t: 22words)

Do you think there’s anything wrong with the shirt this girl is wearing?

Apparently it violated her school’s dress code so severely that the girl, named Summer, got suspended

Summer, who has a 4.4 GPA, has also been banned from her own graduation!

“You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you,” said the principal

“The security guard was within five feet of me,” said Summer. “He had his hand on his gun”

Needless to say, the internet was understandably outraged

A school that has a security officer, actually: a security offer wiedling a gun, and the right to arrest people? A school principal who calls armed security when handling a calm girl? We live in sad times.

It's like this --- we will soon be like Iran and other middle eastern countries where dress codes are enforced for women. I wonder if they would have arrested a guy who's pant crotch was at his ankles and his butt crack was showing?

Comon now.... this shirt makes it obvious that she's female. Once we allow young women to wear things like this around old male principals it's a slippery slope to allowing those same women to expose their ankles. You people just didn't think this through.

I know you're joking, but they used the pronoun "she" when talking about the principal. Obviously old female principals are the lecherous ones...

If it's against in their school's rules, they should warn her first, at least she will know , not banning immediately .

She denied her warning when she refused to go with the principle. Like the school said, she wasn't punished for the shirt, she was punished for the insubordination.

female principal not male. The student worked hard to walk that stage and to not be able to celebrate her success is not just heart breaking, but also it is concerning for your females in the future.

Geez, I didn't even NOTICE those indecently provocative, "boom chicka wow wow" shoulders. In all seriousness, I assumed the problem was that the material was clingy around her breasts... not that that excuses their behaviour, anyway. I used to wear a similar top in a corporate environment without any issues...

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have read all day. You (as in the school and everyone else thinking they can do the same) have got to be effing kidding me. Back when I was in high school, girls were allowed to wear tank tops, even of the cropped kind, and shorts, as long as they fully covered your butt. And guess what? The boys weren't automatically lusting over the girls... most of them anyway.

Okay, so reading the actual story, this student has had enough altercations with school administration over 4 years that they are required to call her mother before every disciplinary action. If every one of those incidents were her being unfairly targeted you would think that if she could not leave the school she would at least avoid giving any excuse to target her. I am highly against sexist, body shaming dress codes, but sadly for now they exist, and this girl was aware that her shirt violated the code, and that she is already being monitored, fairly or not. So, her genius idea is to risk her scholarship by painting a giant target on her back in the form of a shirt that violates a school policy (even if the policy is ridiculous and should not exist)? Seems to me that she was just trying to cause a scene and was surprised when her actions actually had a consequence.

The thing is she is not telling the whole story of at least she is failing to admit her part. To begin with, if the shirts violates the stupid dress code, then just get over it and change it. She decided to refuse and refused to go where the principle asked her, to the point where they had to call security. This is why the suspension, not the shirt. It was her behavior. Certain institutions have dress rules that everyone had to follow, I.e. She oe, schools, military, certain business. It's life and all this drama she is cashing shows how much she really does think it's all about her

There had been several previous incidents/misunderstandings between this student and principle so the student's mother had instructed the school administrators to call her before taking any sort of disciplinary action. She was obeying her mother by waiting for the phone call. Besides, this seems to be about the questioning of authority vs. individual rights. Did she disobey the principle? Probably. Was the response from the adults in authority appropriate? I'm not so sure.

That's going to far! Arrest? Kicked out of school? What the heck! This little girl is the next generation ! Why! Look at her grades. These teachers and school officials need to retire! No one is thinking about this girls feeling on them putting her down. I would say pull the top up over your shoulders dear. I hate when our kids are put down. I was told when I got my hair cut at 15 I could not sing in the church again! Does this make since! Yes my hair was past my waist but it was my hair. No one has the right to judge another person. As my father in law once told me tell them to pee up a rope! It's no wonder kids rebell so much! We are lucky we still have kids wanting a good education and not into drugs. 😬😬😬😬☹️😤

I would talk to a lawyer to see what can be done to fight back on this. It is ridiculous that any school can get away with this type of behavior. Was it an Ivy league school where the students have a set uniform to wear? Not likely. Having a security guard on the school premise with an actual weapon is something that should be looked into. One of my daughters teachers tried to do this to her and it back fired on them. It is probably the same reason they made this girl leave as well. My daughter was quite busty at her age and the teacher told her she was showing too much cleavage and that she should go home and change. It was a normal V neck t-shirt. The only thing is when you are busty it sort of pulls the neck down a little bit, but that does not make it slutty or provocative. My daughter refused and left the room. They did not pursue it any further. I have to give this young lady credit for fighting back because they have no right to do this with out the parents involvement.

Oh, this happened to me too, back in 2006 when I graduated. I was wearing this shorts that were appropriate lenght, sandals (that showed "too much" of my foot) and a full sleeved blouse on top. But my teacher told me to go home and change (I couldn't, I lived too far from school), or, if not, stay in the back so that the principle didn't see me. And I was one of the top students. That ruined my graduation day and I will never forget the humiliation and crying alone in the bathroom, after being one of the best and most quiet and shy students in that school. Teachers are stupid, throw rocks at them.

There are dress code rules at this school obviously. Like at every other school, my daughters school, oh they don't like theirs either and I may not agree with every one of them anymore than I agree with my own job's dress code, but it's there and there for a reason. Kids will push the boundaries and some parents will allow it and give excuses for them as well. To some readers the actions of the principal and security officer seem extreme, and yeah it might have been, but this particular version of the story leaves out the specifics of all the other "negative" encounters this student had with this principal before. Many problems were mentioned in the article, but nothing about what those were. Maybe, just maybe this student and her mother felt the rules at the school didn't apply to her. When she just sat there and wouldn't move, even though they couldn't get her mother on the phone, it was blatant disrespect on top of who knows what all she'd done before, because the readers don't. We should know by now the media leaves out information that would take away from how innocent they've portrayed her. The principal and security officer may not have been really certain on how she would react and they did what they thought was right, despite how readers assume it was wrong or excessive. So, unless we all know EVERYTHING that occurred between she and the principal, we shouldn't just believe it was only a dress code violation in itself, it appears to be more of the final straw that broke the proverbial camels back. I'm just saying, to a step back and think first before assuming guilt or innocence based on a one sided story. Could be right or it could be wrong.

But we also not not assume there WAS any other actions, as, like you mentioned, none were pointed to in the article. Assuming what is usually is just as dangerous as assuming what is not. It is safer in this instance to assume nothing and use only the information from the article until and unless more information is put forward.

As a mom, I would let my child wear this. It's not a revealing top. It's actually very classically pretty. She looks like a modest girl. This principal would be facing a momma bear for sure. I've seen what other teens wear... this is more of a violation of women. I'm not a feminist, but maybe after seeing all the issues with prom attire and dress codes we all should be!

Given my own personal place in life, which need not be discussed, I much appreciate a mother with a brain. Many parents want to be unrealistic about what their children wear and how they behave. And then, as you touch on, they blatantly send them to things like homecoming ignoring all rules. Well, at least the popular kids get to ignore the rules, but that's a different subject. I think that if parents would discuss sexual values and morals rather that DRESS CODES then things like this would not happen, and likely, crime rates of certain types, most which are, in my opinion, falsified anyway, would decrease.

No... the principle needed an armed security officer because she was dealing with a problem child that is the next professional victim "Standing up for what's right" regardless of what's actually right. She said so herself, rather than complying she was insubordinate. "Summer says she and the principal have had a number of issues during her four years at the school. The tension has gotten so bad that her mother says she recently instructed the school administrators to call her before taking any sort disciplinary action against Summer." "They can't take me anywhere unless my mother is called," she says. "I stayed in my seat just like a lot of role models that I have looked up to stayed in their seats," she says. 'I mean, you have to stand up for what you believe in."

Ok I watched your link and I will tell you that when a parent feels that they have to step into the situation on discipline issues at a school, it is usually for a good reason. My daughter had issues with the vice principle in her high school and she too was an honor student. Every time we turned around he has after her for some reason or other. She was too smart for him and he never prevailed. I offered to step in but she insisted on handling it herself. A friend of mine pulled his son out of a school because every time something happened and his son was there he was blamed and although they worked to fix things and he improved his behavior they never changed their opinion of him and would never believe he was innocent and if started to affect his grades. Why not use this situation to negotiate better behavior in exchange for the rights to go to the grad and receive the grants instead of suspending her positive reinforcement instead of negative

This is f*****g ridiculous. This girls' future is going to be taken away from her just because she showed off her shoulders? Seriously? Most girls show cleavage, their belly-buttons, and sometimes maybe even their a*s crack - but because this senior student is wearing a top that shows off her shoulders, she is being kicked out of the school and isn't getting her diploma? What the actual hell? Someone fire that son-of-a-b***h principal and replace them with someone who has a brain that functions correctly. To me, that top shouldn't even violate the dress code compared to where I used to go to school. Girls at my old school wore things a lot more revealing, but you are going to almost arrest this girl because she showed off her damn shoulders. That isn't even a legitimate reason to arrest someone. It's a school rule, not a f*****g law. You see how most female singers dress and how slutty they look, but let a girl wear a plain green shirt and everything goes to s**t. Just come on!

And another comment, if they care about fashion so badly and what students wear - why the hell don't you just assign them mandatory school uniforms? Like how private schools do? The whole reason that even started was so students wouldn't be bullied for the style or brand of clothing they wear. I mean, sure it takes away individuality, but if you're so f*****g concerned about having someone REVEAL THEIR F*****G SHOULDERS, what are you gonna do?

I work in a school and if she felt it was OK to wear this shirt then I am pretty certain she has taken a cue from others that it was probably OK. I also know that at our school Seniors tend to push the limits at the end of the year. Our school would have also asked her to change her shirt as they have to have 2" shoulder strap rule. (No spaghetti straps or bra straps width) All she would have had to do was pull the shirt up on her shoulders and nothing would be said at my school.

Good grief - if school staff spent HALF as much time teaching as they spend scrutinizing every student's outfit every day, EVERY kid could have a 4.4 GPA. This is ridiculous. Since when did shoulders become sex objects? If this girl was bending over and the shirt was gaping open maybe I could see A FEMALE teacher asking her to change her shirt for the day, but being called into a room alone with two male authority figures - one with a gun - is harassment and abuse. And not allowing her to attend her own well-earned graduation ceremony - I hope a judge throws that one under the bus real fast. Who ARE these principals who are so focused on the clothing that their female students wear these days - a bunch of Sharia-law converts?

With each passing year, we are slipping deeper and deeper into a totalitarian police state, where outrageous displays of power and control are being allowed without so much as a whisper of protest. Soon, we'll be hearing about acts of physical brutality inflicted on students for violating the dress code or being late...and we will continue to remain silent. Just as we remain passive as more and more of our so-called "representatives" become corrupted agents of those who would do us harm. Our society is like the frog that never notices the temperature rising as it's being slowly boiled to death. It's long past time for We, the People, to take to the streets, and together, with one voice and say "Enough!".

It was exposure of shoulders/bare skin that was the issue. I think they're getting a lawyer, and the ACLU may be getting involved. Maybe if enough parents did this, that principal wouldn't be able to target students anymore.

I thought about this a lot yesterday for some reason. The young girl complied with the jacket and zipped it all the way up. The Principal chose the jacket and gave it to her to comply. Why all of a sudden was that not good enough? Why were they so angry? And if he is a male principal with a male security guard, then why were they angry that she wanted to have her mother there when he asked to take her to an empty room to change in front of him? They said, ‘I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.’” If I were her I would want my mom or dad there too. Two adults were overpowering her.

The security officer is also completely breaking penal code. having his hand on his firearm is brandishing, he has no right to affect a citizen's arrest because she broke no felonies in his presence, and a security officer isn't a cop. complete b******t.

What kind of clothing people consider offensive is a very subjective matter. For some, a short skirt is offensive but they might be ok with a tight tshirt or vica versa. This is why I think school uniform is a good thing. Everyone is on the same page when it comes to what is allowed or not and endless discussions about clothes being to tight/short/revealing could be saved.

Yes, but then you get into the discussion of freedom of expression as covered by the 1st amendment of the U.S. Constitution (you know that piece of toilet paper we talk about when we're mad). Most people in the U.S. consider personal expression an important thing, and simply can't agree on what it means.

I think it is called emotional constipation. Believe it or not, men don't go into a state of rabid lust at the sight of a shoulder. Some people should get over themselves. Thank Heaven it wouldn't happen in England. We are much more reasonable about life.

This is whàt happens when you live in a country that hasn't shifted it's opinions since about 1803. It must come as a shock to realise female s have breasts. I think a psychiatrist would have a field day. It would never happen here in England. I like to think we don't go around as if men can't control their bits art the sight of a shoulder. This young lady apparently and sadly needs a very good lawyer in order to keep her RIGHT to attend her own graduation that she has worked hard for. The principal completely overstepped her her bounds and became the school persecuter, using an armed guard in order to frighten this student into submitting to an unlawful order to change her shirt. The principal (dictator) should be fired, or demoted for such a cruel act. Authority cannot be handled by some people.

Totally Ridiculous...its a shirt, she had it on. It covered all of her "private parts" properly! Yet, Is the principal enforcing males with their pants below their waist? But why didn't the principal explain the situation to the young lady and give her a warning (tell her what was not acceptable concerning the green top she was wearing) and let her go home to change or have a parent come with another top to change into! You don't take an Honor Student and ruin her future because the top didn't meet some obscure criteria! I bet...if that was a male football player with his pants hanging below his buttocks with his underware showing...the outcome would have been much different...but it should not! If the young lady has a 4.4 gpa., and she was aware school's dress code, one small unintended excursion from the rule, should have been handled with much more heart by asking the young lady to wear a over-coat for the rest of the day and to review the exact wording of policy. FIRE THE PRINCIPAL

I have a few problems with this. She even said in the interview that she knew she could get in trouble for it. She willingly broke the rules, regardless of if those rules are fair or not. Given what she said in the video, I wouldn't be surprised if she was doing it to "take a stand". If she wants to play the rebel, she's going to get the rebel treatment... and that's not a bright future. She did refuse to go with the principle. What other people have allegedly done doesn't matter, and your grades don't matter. Even if what she's saying is true about drug users and sex offenders, there are probably circumstances as to why they are allowed to walk... just like there are circumstances as to why she isn't.

Maybe follow dress code, follow the rules set in place by your school? If she had followed dress code none of what happened afterward would have happened, sure it is extreme to ban her from the graduation ceremony, but if she had followed rules this mess wouldn't have happened. I'd also like to point out that just because she's an honors student doesn't give her special privilege to not be suspend, not be dress coded, and not get in trouble; if she really was smart enough to have a 4.4 gpa then shouldn't she be smart enough to follow rules?

Seriously, this is too much... I think the principal was waiting for the right time to ban her from her graduation, using the shirt as an excuse, probably because the principal had enough of her 'insubordination' or due to a personal reason or bias. This reminds me a lot of when Austria waged war against Serbia, using the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand as an excuse to have a legitimate reason to do so.

That principal should be fired, and the officer should be dealt with as well. Keeping a hand on her gun as if this girl and her shirt were a threat? Shameful and terrifying. My high school had an officer on guard, no gun, and he performed his job professionally. He actually assisted me in a sticky situation with another student who was ACTUALLY a threat. He didn't need a gun to control the situation. I would say this story is laughable if it wasn't so sad. This girl more than deserves to walk at her graduation and accept her well-earned scholarships. Shame on the school.

"Arrest you"? Seriously? Is this really a proper way to deal with a student supposedly violating any school rules? And bannig somebody from school events? What is this gonna teach her? That'd just make a stubborn person angry and willing to test the system more and more; and a soft person would just get into depression from bitterness and unfairness of life. We should not be judging the shirt here, but the principal's behavior and its consequences. Being equal before the law is the key to a civilized society, so if there are rules, you must follow them. But this must be explained to the kid. Give her a warning and expect her to dress differently tomorrow, why trying to deal with it at the moment. After all, she was not naked or something.

The dress codes for many American schools are ridiculous. At my school, you can wear skintight shorts as a female, and muscle shirts as a male. But one day we were held back from class so our principal could tell us he didn't want to see bra straps. Those are SO provocative, I know. Is this how they imagine students' minds? "Wow, that girl who obviously has breasts is wearing a bra? That's SO arousing! I have to go to the bathroom and masturbate because my hormones are preventing me from focusing!"

This feels like we are not getting the whole story. I don't think the dress code is the problem. It is the enforcement. 1. Did she actually break dress code? 2. The security officer is the appropriate person to deal with it. 3. The suspension is because she was insubordinate, not the outfit. Was she actually insubordinate.. that's a little hazy as well.

These dress codes are insane. And the reaction from teachers, principals and freaking security officers is even more insane. Talk about an overreaction. It's summer time. It's hot. It wasn't revealing, and anybody who got 'distracted' by it must have a dirty mind. Why is it apparently so horrible that teenaged girls have *gasp* bodies! I actually wore a somewhat similar top during high school. Mine was (thick) white, eyelet. With a ribbon drawstring. If anything, it was more 'revealing'. Nobody had an issue. No boys lost their minds and flung themselves at me like a pack of rabid dogs. A few girls mentioned they liked my top, that was about it. School needs to fire its principal, the security officer, and pardon the poor girl. Or at the very least, give them a good reprimanding. If it was such an issue, just discreetly pull her aside and say 'we think your shirt in inappropriate for school, please don't wear it again.' Not that it even was inappropriate.

That isn't appropriate for school. shes just trying to look sweet and innocent but in reality that outfit isnt appropriate for work or school unless you are a stripper. it is cute and everything but there are other things you can wear to school besides a crop top. as for the other allegations like the officer had his hand on his gun, being banned from activities, etc id like to hear the schools side of the story for that.

I went to a Christian high school and now a Christian University, our officials and teachers weren't even that super strict. Suspension is only for serious violations like vandalizing, and crimes in general. It's clear the principal has a vendetta and has a personal problem with the girl or her parents and that's very unprofessional and abuse of power in general.

I'm confused... Littlebit offtopic and not really that important at all, but I thought GPA was used to compare different grading systems... then how is the US (?) GPA ranging from 1 to 5, and the European (or at least Dutch, where I'm from) 1 to 4?! XD Confusing, really. But damn, I'm reading more and more on these dressing codes, and wow, these schools have their priorities all in the wrong places. Just wow.

GPA measures a students average grade. 0 is absolute failing and 4 is 100%. Having above a 4.0 would show that you not only aced all your work, but did a lot of extra work as well.

OH MY GOD a STOMACH!!!! God I see a stomach and I just wanna get porkin. I mean, hell, i can't even go to a pool. All those stomachs around, I get to droolin' so bad I can't handle it. But the school's issue was the shoulders, which is so much more intoxicating. I mean show me a good set of shoulders and I go absolutely bonkers. Seriously woman, if you think a bit of stomach is going to cause a REAL issue, get your head checked. Frankly, the ONLY reason find it more attractive than they should at school is because there are rules against it. If such rules did not exist, it would not seem exotic, and therefore would be no less enticing than hair.

"Here have a gun but don't you dare show some skin!" Serious bs... I'm guessing in a few years time, we will have to cover ourselves completely because showing a bit of your shoulders is sooo bad... Guys won't be able to resist touching you and what not... Or you know, how about teaching men that even if some skin is showing, that doesn't give them the f-ing right to touch you... Guess that's too hard though -_-

If she knew before she went to school it violated the dress code then why was she so surprised when approached about it? We all ahve to suffer the consequences of being defiant and disrespectful of rules. That is what is wrong with this world today. Rules have no meaning and people do not think they should be held accountable for their actions. If she worked so hard to get that grade point and receive scholarships why take a chance so close to graduation? Do not blame anyone else...you made that choice!

To keep things fresh, I'll take side of principal here. If the information is true, then, in my opinion, he was right but acted hysterically, to say the least (a security guard, seriously?). See, a dress code is a rule that students or workers are obliged to follow - if they do not, they can change their school or workplace. Same applies to any rule. We're speaking of a last year student, i.e. someone who had no trouble complying with the dress code for several years. So, why the sudden change now? You can (and often should) fight for the change of the rules, but as long as they are in place, you need to follow them. And no, her grades were not more important. Being a good driver does not allow you to speed. Being an responsible adult is not a valid defense against drug possession charge etc.

Joking aside, look: We have become a ltigious society. Somebody is always suing somebody else for something. A lot of people in public positions have adopted the "cover your a*s" mentality. I think she went too far this time, because I can't imagine anyone objecting to the top except the principal -- unless somebody complained, which the article doesn't mention. Even then, the principal has the call. She has reached the level of her incompetence. Maybe she can run for President next. Incompetence is rewarded in D.C.

I'm torn. On one hand we can debate all day whether or not the dress code is appropriate or not. But that is not the point that matters. She was in the wrong according to the current policy, therefore asking her to change/cover is an acceptable response. HOWEVER, at no time is the ultimatum or the armed officer ever appropriate. So, if the question is, was the principal in the right to enforce the dress code and ask her to cover/change, yes. But if the question is did they show far too much force by way of mimicking a totalitarian society that they seem to have conjured from works such as 1984 or V for Vendetta, the answer is also yes.

she complied at first with the jacket... having the principal then decide that is was not enough sounds like a principal with a target or problem with the teacher.. having a armed officer 5 feet away and being told to change right then is intimidating... we are getting prudish as a nation... when I went to junior high back in the 70's I wore tube tops to school without a problem.. and I was busty... how is politely stating that I am not allowed to go anywhere with you without my parents knowledge being insubordinate???.. what is is called when administrators try and force a young woman to go against a pre-established agreement previously made with her mother??? isn't that bullying??

The problem is that she's not wearing a bra. That's where the rule should be set. Walking around with those things jiggling all over would be impossible for the guys not going bonkers. And if she was wearing one, the strap would need to be hidden in order to look good. Voila! But worst for her is that little thing called 'gravity'. Ok, the minute I saw that she was an honor student, I had to wonder if her style of dress was not innocently selected after all. Having graduated as a straight A student myself, and coming from a class of high achievers, I remember many a time when my honor student classmates (male and female both) purposefully dressed in "edgy" attire in an attempt to "test the system" or make some kind of point. I knew this because I heard them plan it, then make a scene when it all went down. While this student's shirt isn't necessarily over the top, it's just enough to start a dialogue with the possibility of an incendiary outcome. My point: too many people are eager for attention, be it in the form of classmates' admiration, a parent's protective revenge, or the outrage of strangers on the internet.

Another reader, Shari H, posted a link the more detailed account. This girl has had a long history of confrontations and problems with this principal, to the extent that it's required that her mother be consulted prior to disciplinary action; in other words, it's a chronic problem with her and this school. The girl claims she understands and respects the dress code, yet she deliberately and knowingly violated it with an off-the shoulder shirt that she KNEW would violate the dress code. Now, if she thinks the dress code is sexist and wrong, and she's wearing the shirt as a protest, well, that's kind of useless to begin with, but then why would she say that she understands and respects the dress code? Sounds to me like she's manipulating the readership and portraying herself like some kind of Rosa Parks of school dress codes when in fact she makes a habit of trolling authority figures. http://www.wcnc.com/news/education/dress-code-series-of-events-lead-to-honor-roll-students-suspension/

If your dresscode rules this extreme - better use school uniforms.. easier for everyone lol. Don't know what person you must be to act this way just because of a top showing shoulders.

Shari H

Yeah! It's ridiculous to hold a straight A student to the same standards as their bottom of the barrel students! how dare they punish this poor girl for her insubordination. They should make a caste system where your grades indicate how many rules don't apply to you!

Speaking as a Momma, to a daughter who's almost 30, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this young lady's top. I've seen young girls go to school dressed like street walkers, except the street walkers wore more, and nothing happened to them, so why her? Clearly this so called principal has more issues than Vouge.

there was nothing offensive about her blouse, they could have even asked her to pull it up higher on her shoulders, please I have very short skirts and midriff blouses being worn to school. They really need to learn to pick their battles at this school. I would be bringing up this before the school and demanding an apology to the young girl.

Are you kidding me? The girls in my school have worst shirts than she can ever have. The clothes of ignorant gurls at my school required a dress code for wearing a shirt that reveal their bra and skin but yet they would wonder why staff had a problem. this girl not near the stupid level of those stupid girls. It nice clean look that show nothing. shoulders is no big deal...atleast she not showing her other bodyparts like what most girl do.

I feel so very sorry for that young lady and her parents. Even if this insane dress code was defensible, it lost all credibility when it involved SUSPENSION. This appears to be a tactic to keep her from graduating and thereby ruining her future before it even starts. This makes me really sad. I hope the school changes its' mind quickly.

There is no need for this! This principle is going to hold back a 4.4 grade student because of a fine blouse and the girl defending her blouse? The principle needs to have her contract looked at. According to NBC Charlotte, Summer has had “a number of issues” with her principal over the past four years, and because of this, Summer’s mother has asked the school to call her before taking any disciplinary action against her daughter. The principal was unable to reach Summer’s mother, so Summer went about her day.

Seriously woman, if you think a bit of stomach is going to cause a REAL issue, get your head checked. Frankly, the ONLY reason find it more attractive than they should at school is because there are rules against it. We all ahve to suffer the consequences of being defiant and disrespectful of rules. That is what is wrong with this world today.

It never stops pulling downward, and eventually that pair of neat beauties will wind up sagging around the waist. Someone needs to teach her about Sir Isaac Newton. ;D

The guard pulled a f*****g gun on a calm girl who's only "crime" is exposing her shoulders? What in the ever loving name of f**k?

The guard did NOT "pull a gun" on her. Read the detailed article, and keep in mind that you're only hearing her version of things, and that she's had a long history of conflict with the principal. I don't think I trust that she's telling the whole story. http://www.wcnc.com/news/education/dress-code-series-of-events-lead-to-honor-roll-students-suspension/

US schools have security OR cops on campus w/ guns, B/C of school shootings. Schools have dress codes, follow them. They exist everywhere.

I think the top wasn't that extreme and the punishment was excessive. Truthfully, I think she was punished not for that shirt, but because she was a female that "refused to obey" a male authority! I believe it is a gender bias issue!

Follow the rules and enforce them equally, they gave her a choice and she chose the wrong one now she have to deal with her decision. not too smart after all.

Life is full of dumb rules and s****y consequences for failure to abide. Might as well learn it young. All these dress code stories have a common thread: parents who think their special kids should be exempt from rules everyone else is expected to follow. You're not doing your kids any favours. These kids should see how fun military schools can be

Did anyone else notice she's wearing high rise jeans with a crop top? The fact that she is trying to hide it bothers me. I'd need to know the whole story on this one to make a proper judgement because the picture is deceiving.

So, she was given the chance to change the shirt and she refused? Damn straight she should get suspended. Imagine if you were at work and the boss said "Uh, you're really not dressed appropriately. We did ask that all customer facing staff...[specifications of dress code here] so please could you change." "No, I won't change." says the staff member. "Uh, why don't you take tomorrow off. And the next day. Tell you what, we'll call you when we need you."

Do you keep a change of clothes with you? She was given a jacket, and zipped it up. Problem solved. But it wasn't enough for Herr Principal.

She was not suspended for wearing the shirt (BTW, she had the top pulled down to expose shoulders, back, and a little cleavage.....not the way it looks in the picture.) She's suspended for refusing to go to the office. I heard her on the news just now saying "I stayed in my seat, the way other's have stayed in THEIR seats." Uh....hope you aren't comparing yourself to Rosa Parks.

I think the truth of the matter is: The School Principal couldn't handle it because the top she was wearing made her look sexy and it turned him on.

No, Silly, it is what is beneath the shoulders. Being a school administrator is so hard, with all the furniture shopping you have to do with that extra tax money they give you.

Why does her mother have to be consulted first? Could it be because this principal has a history of harassing her daughter?

Apparently the principal is a Muslim loving c**t who can't handle a little bare shoulder. This girl should not be suspended for anything and the principal should be slapped upside the head with a two by four.

You have to respect the rules wherever you go, and do not impose yours and then surprise you because they have not accepted them.

Yeah you have to respect the rules - unless they didn't make sense - but: if I would be the girl, with this top I wouldn't think that I break any rules. If your dresscode rules this extreme - better use school uniforms.. easier for everyone lol. Don't know what person you must be to act this way just because of a top showing shoulders.
