Pirellis’ 2016 Calendar Replaces Sexy Stars With Influential Women
Pirelli, an Italian tire manufacturer, has had a habit of releasing an annual calendar of nude and scantily-clad women that many women have been less than happy about. This year’s calendar, however, promises to be a PR coup – instead of their usual softcore-pornographic fare, their 2016 calendar will feature thinkers, athletes, businesspeople and other inspiring elites from the world of women.
Though the women in the photos are in various states of dress (or undress), that’s definitely not the focus this time around. Annie Leibovitz, the award-winning photographer behind this year’s calendar (whom we’ve written about before), said, “I started to think about the roles that women play, women who have achieved something. I wanted to make a classic set of portraits. I thought that the women should look strong but natural, and I decided to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio. This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretense in these pictures and be very straightforward.”

I can see your point and typically I would agree. But women that where naked was necessary. Women are constantly made to feel that we are to look a specific way otherwise we are deemed ugly. The women that are seen naked do not necessarily fit that criteria by societal standards. For example, Serena is muscular and dark you do not see many women like here in the media and when you do it is not a positive image. As a dark black women, I have been told by various people I would be prettier if I were not so dark. People often associate darkness with negativity, evil and ugliness. In addition, women are considered masculine if they are muscular. In this picture she looks gorgeous she is showing off her beautiful dark skin and her muscular body telling off everyone who perpetuate a specific standard of beauty and for me this is empowering. I agree she is powerful with her clothes on. But the picture she chose to take can also be seen as empowering depending on how you choose to look at it.

I love it. Obviously disrobing wasn't a requirement - when it's a choice, it's empowering. I had to look up some of these names - all accomplished women, and what a creative range. Thanks, Pirelli! PS: It's a calendar - just a few months, a few images, so gee, I guess it doesn't TOTALLY express my view of womanhood. Kind of like a Sexy Firemen calendar doesn't need to TOTALLY express manhood.

Interesting exercise. But, however well-meaning, this calendar is not going to be as popular as the others. I have never heard of anyone de-crying the Victoria's Secret undies show - those girls prance around almost naked too.

Look at the pictures behind the scenes: notice how good Serena Wiliams' skin looks there and how bad it looks in the calendar because of the black and white and the rest of the editing they did. Same for the other women. I know this calendar is not supposed to be sexy, but why would you take away these women's natural beauty by your editing? Of course you will answer "It's art" , but what kind of art makes women look worse then they do in reality? All those women were radiating and you made them look tern and sad.
