Barely eight years ago, most Americans believed that being gay is "just the way some choose to live." You know, like choosing your diet or hairdo. And while the tide has shifted, with society being more accepting, more folks are coming out as LGBTQ+ than ever before - some chose to and still do forget that it's as real as global warming or Christmas.

The subreddit Sappho And Her Friend, then, is a godsend which sheds light on cringeworthy instances of LGBTQ+ erasure from academia, pop culture and real life. Who knew that straight people completely ignoring the fact that LGBTQ+ is a thing can be so absurdly amusing.

northlakes20 Report

In a world that claims progress and inclusivity, it is disheartening to witness the persistent shadows of prejudice cast upon the LGBTQ+ community. From the humblest corners of society to the grand stage of global politics, there exists a myriad of reasons, however wrong, why some individuals remain staunchly ignorant when it comes to accepting and embracing diverse sexual orientations and gender fluidity.

While significant progress has been made over the years, including a growing number of individuals, particularly Gen Z, feeling more comfortable and open about their LGBTQIA+ identities, there remains much work to be done. Unfortunately, even during Pride Month, which spans the entire month of June, incidents like the recent vandalism of the LGBTQIA+ community's flags at Stonewall National Monument in New York City, the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement, serve as a reminder that challenges persist.

"Pride Month — and the pride parades — continue to be deeply important in the continued solidarity, fight for human rights, and visibility of the LGBTQI+ community. Additionally, and equally important, is the label 'pride'," Samantha Stein, a licensed psychologist based in San Francisco, told Bored Panda in an email. In 2019, Pride celebrations in San Francisco included 289 parade contingents and held "the largest gathering of LGBTQ+ people and allies in the nation."

"Over the years, it has continued to increase in size and scope, and I haven't seen or heard of any displays of prejudice there since the 1990s," Stein said. "In some ways, it has lost some of its original power: many of the young people from the Bay Area who attend are not aware of the history and courage of the original PRIDE celebrations. That said, we can view that as a positive change since they haven't had to be!"

June, for those of you who don't know, is a month of celebration that aligns with a significant event in the history of the Gay Liberation Movement known as the Stonewall Uprising. In the early hours of June 28th, 1969, a gay bar called 'The Stonewall Inn' in New York City's West Village was targeted by a police raid. Such raids were common at the time, but on this particular occasion, the patrons of the bar resisted and fought back, leading to what became known as the Stonewall Riots. These protests continued for several days.

Reminds me of the controversy surrounding The Little Mermaid. How the actual f**k is her skin colour a problem. She's a MERMAID. And before you say 'oh but original Ariel was a redhead' It's a fictional character, and if they had changed just her hair colour - there wouldn't have been an outcry. People try and pretend it's about hair colour, but it's not-so-well-hidden racism.

The original isn't even a redhead from what I can find. In the original Hans Christian Anderson version only her eye colour and the texture of her skin is described. "Her skin was as soft and tender as a rose petal, and her eyes were as blue as the deep sea, but like all the others she had no feet. Her body ended in a fish tail". No mention of skin colour at all. No mention of hair colour. So technically the only thing the new version got "wrong" was eye colour.

I think people focused on where the writer was from and said something about there being mostly redheads there so he write about a redhead. But in the 2023 movie, no one seems bothered by the fact that Arielle has sisters that are all different nationalities. But we know what the real issue was for those that made it an issue.

I was thinking about this issue. The reason why white people are light skinned is so they can absorb the vitamin d from the sun better. With the Ariel issue, I think it would go 2 ways. Either she lives so deep the sun can't reach in which case it doesn't matter at all what color skin she has, she isn't getting any sun anyway. Or she spends most of her time in shallower water, in which case it would make sense for her to be darker skinned since water magnifies the suns rays (ever got a sunburn swimming? Ouch!) Of course all of this is assuming mermaids have the same biology as humans. Which is doubtful.

I believe most deep sea fish are darker colored due to lack of coral or other brightly colored plants to serve as camouflage. They also tend to use bioluminescence or be largly transparent.

Fish are very high in vitamin d. Assuming mermaids aren't vegetarian, there's plenty of vitamin d just swimming around the ocean.

Evidently the person who mentioned Ariel’s hair color has never seen an African American with reddish hair. We can all have any color or texture of hair, as our DNA comes from all our ancestors, not just the ones we know about, and we carry a huge number of dormant genes that can be epigenetically triggered (mostly through extreme stress). Since we can all trace our genetic background to ever smaller groups countless thousands of years ago, we could express traits of our unknown ancient relatives long dead and turned to dust.

In the little mermaid it's more of science problem IMHO. Dark skin developed to protect the skin from the sun. A mermaid should be white as a sheet as merpeople aren't exposed to UV-Light. It just makes absolutely no sense. I wouldn't think twice if prince charming was black.

But like...her having a tail and being a mermaid does make scientific sense? Or her getting cursed and losing her voice while suddenly acquiring legs? Why don't those parts not matter but when it comes to skin tone it's suddenly all about the real scientific accuracy? To me it sounds like a way to justify racism, sorry.

Hannah, Pamela24 hits the nail on the head. No problem with her having a tail and there being a sea witch and talking animals but oh no her skin colour isn't backed by science. Can you see the issue?

That was a pet peeve of me when discussing the Rings of Power. As a Tolkien fan, I hated that show, but when people started going about melanin to justify their dislike for the show I knew it was thinly veiled racism. I had no problem with black elves. My problem was that there was only one of them, elves being a very homogeneous race, save for hair or eye color. So all elves should be black, or none. Same with dwarves. But that was just one of the myriad of problems with that show.

Have you ever gotten a sunburn swimming? Water magnifies the sun's energy. Unless she is living so deep the sun can't reach. In which case it doesn't matter at all what her skin tone is. Many organisms living in the ultra deep ocean are dark.

Sorry to bring it up and p**s you off but like it's an issue and related to the original meme so why not. People trying to hide racism and homophobia though claiming 'scientific inaccuracies' in fictional stories but then have zero problems with all the other scientific impossibilities. It's kinda weird how random strangers just stop someone and tell them stuff like this or "I thought that you two sisters look so cute together" or something like that. So weird

I mean, aren’t gay clubs synonymous with cis-hey bridle intentional misspelling) showers anyways? I can see the mistake here, given the queers are often marginalized in their own spaces for the sake of some weird tokenism. I bet the grossed out girl has a GBF (🤮) she thinks of like an accessory.

TBH, I’m heterosexual and as a child, there were many times I shared a bed when I slept over at a friend’s house. Hell, I also did it as an adult when traveling with a group, and hotel rooms were scarce. Wasn’t considered an unusual thing back in the day. Friends and siblings often slept in the same bed. Big whoop-de-do!

Boys also sometimes do get periods. It's not like coming out as a trans dude magically summons a fairy godbro that "bibbiti bobbiti boos" away your uterus and such. Even though that would be kinda awesome now that I think about it.

On one hand, it's true that teenagers can have (and have) moments of uncertainty. On the other hand, your role is being an adult who cares, gives support, love and guidance. Maybe she actually doesn't know what she wants, or what she is... This was your moment to say "I just want you to be happy and a good person, and you to know that I will always be on your side". And you missed that magical moment. You should run a little to take this train, since you're absolutely on time, just run!
