Instagram Support Didn’t Help Me To Get My Stolen Account Back So I Decided To Mess With The Thief In The Only Way I Could
My name is Iwona and I’m a photographer from Poland.
In December 2018 I made a huge mistake by clicking on an e-mail that looked like from Instagram and ended up losing my 80k verified Instagram account.
It was a huge loss because I’m a photographer and this was my business account.
I contacted Instagram many times. I did not get any reply from them apart from the first automatic reply that asks to describe the situation and prove that you are the owner.
My Instagram account was verified using a valid document with my face on it. I believe that it should be the ultimate proof for the support team that I’m the owner of the account. The fact that I didn’t get the account back proves that the support work is very poor.
The only thing I have left is the connection between my business Facebook page and the account that allows me to change the name and bio. So I keep trolling the thief in order to send a direct message to 80k people that followed me because they like my photography work.
The thief uses my account to advertise, scam other Instagram users and to get money from me!
Dear Pandas, give me some ideas of what I can put as the name and bio… or how to get Instagram Support to answer my messages.

If I get a message saying my account needs verification or that my account has a problem, I bypass the email and go through the normal channels to log in to my accounts. It's the same as a creditor that calls me and asks me to verify my account information over the phone because of a problem..I tell them I will call them back. And I only use the number on the back of my cards or statements to contact them..not the numbers that the agent calling me leaves me. Best scam call was the guy with the East Indian accent that said he was calling me from the IRS. I laughed at him saying "The IRS doesn't call people. They send threatening letters and tell you to come see them. Now stop calling my phone before I turn your info over to the FBI."

As much as having an account stolen sucks, people shoudl really read carefully the emails they get. There were at least two language mistakes in the message that caused account theft. No official would contain language flaws. It should have said: Your account will be suspendED not suspending and If you think we maDE a mistake, not make a mistake. Pay attention to details and you will save yourself a lot of troubles.
The problem is that not everyone is native english speaker. And even if you can find those mistakes, it doesn't mean that you will spot them right away. Believe me, at first glance at the picture of the email, i did not spot any. I think they are using the copyright violation as a distraction, as it catches your attention very easily. Pretty good scam, unfortunately :/ The only way to ensure online safety is imo two-factor authentication, which twitter supports (i think).
Load More Replies...The first thing I check on an e-mail is the return address. If it doesn't look legit, it's a scam. The second thing I check if the address looks good, is the grammar. If it isn't proper English, it's fake. Legit businesses make sure their language is correct. If all that passes and it has a link to click to verify something, I type in the company address myself and skip any links. People get in trouble the most from clicking a link!

I don't understand this, you can change the Name and Bio, but cannot reset the password or delete the account? I don't know how Instagram FORGOT PASSWORD option works, but usually that's the easiest way to get back access on any social media or other websites. And please do not fall into another scam where they ask you to pay money and return your account. i feel your pain and i hope you get your account back. But honestly, try forgot password thing if you haven't tried that so far.
believe me I have been trying many ways, of course trying to contact Support but they have been useless. I can't use the option forgot password because the reset password goes to my thief's e-mail or phone number

I've just learned that they have now deleted all of your photos and unfollowed everyone :( have you received any email from Instagram about your account changing name or whatever? If so, there should be a small link somewhere with the words "if you haven't changed your name, click this" or something. From here they'll help you out. You can also go to the log-in screen click on 'Need more help', and log a request specifying that you think you've been hacked, when you last used your account, and any details you think could be relevant. You should then receive an email with a code - you'll need to write it on apiece of paper and take a photo of yourself with it to prove your identity.
You know it's not a scam if they say something as eloquent "Im not want she's money."
Well, this makes me feel sorry for the post's author, but, makes me ever so happy that I deleted my social media accounts years ago. I still get absurd emails though!
If you smell a rat, there probably is a rat present. Always report any suspicious e-mails. If it's legit, the company will get back to you.

I keep refreshing her account and the name and bio keep changing to either "stolen acount" bla bla bla, or a random username its so confusing
I checked her account and I was so sad to see all her hard work stolen away from her!! She made a new account but it's so sad!!! BTW it was very creepy because I went on her old verified account and there was a message from her saying "to all my followers this account got stolen so follow...." So I follwoed her new accoutn, I go back on her old one and the bio changed!! I refresh and see the pic and bio changed again!! the troll was ONLINE I WAS SCARED
Sounds like they only have bots working the CS responses. Bots suck and won't get you anywhere. Contact executives directly and make them feel the pain to get something done. For Instagram, try their COO (Chief Operations Officer). Her name is Marne Levine. Look up her contact info on social media.
First, try every day for a month in a row to report your account as hacked, until some day a good support help you. If that do not work, make the account for deletion if you can post from your business account , break all the rules, https://help.instagram.com/478745558852511 , you can post you sell a weapon and report the post , so the account get closed, or change name to the president , then report it You can't impersonate others or provide inaccurate information.
Instagram account security is flawed in so many levels... When I first tried creating an Instagram account I found out someone was successfully using my email address (no idea how the account got "verified"), but I was permitted to flag and verify that the email was mine while the account wasn't, so they were unlinked. No idea how the other person solved her situation. But, I really think it might have been some sort of honest mistake, because I never received emails from Instagram from when the other person account was created and the same crazy stuff that happens on my gmail (it's firstname.lastname@ and I always get emails from firstnamelastname@ and think she might be getting several of my MIA mails) might have happened. But, having provided official document with picture when getting the account verified and now the same document is disregarded is crazy AF
We can all help you if we go and report this Stolen account as a scam or "Pretending to be someone else". It should get deleted by Instagram . The more people report, the better!

If I understood this right, it said that if the email was changed, then it had to be changed by using the original address it was set up with (aka your email.) If you still have access to the email account, you may be able to go and find the original do you want to change your email from instagram and take back control that way. Im sorry if this was no help, they have a fairly extensive help page, if this dosen't work there may be something else on there that will.
Technology is changing and the thieves are changing with it. The level of detail they put into these scams to make it look like a legitimate account is insane. The simplest thing you can do to protect yourself is look at the email address its coming from. So say you get an email looking exactly like a Bank of America alert, but the address saya billybob@basic.net delete that c**p fast. The email address should always match on "official" business
I did Tweet, no reply :) Instagram is a huuuuge machine I guess they just don't care about it. But they should because now a verified account is out there and can scam others and it's happening more often. I did many mistakes when it comes to protecting the account. But honestly I never thought that someone might want to steal it. I hope that this article will make others more aware

I can't vouch for Instagram, but customer service is part of my job here in a video games company. Account thefts are, sadly and surprisingly, more common than they should be and I helped restore tons of accounts to our users. I can't give too much internal details, but this is usually how we handle this. 1) User inquires about the stolen account; 2) We send them a reply, which is NEVER an automated one, but we do use pre-written templates to speed up our work. Here we ask all the information we need, and regardless of the information you think we should have about you, we still NEED you to send us what we ask for confirmation and technical reasons. 3) The user sends the info we asked, if incomplete, we will reply again with the missing info and push the user to send us the remaining info by providing all the guides neccessary; 4) Once we have your info, we forward it to the department that is authorised to handle your information for real, (to be continued)
Daria you handle support like you should, my sister-in-law also works in support team for her company. But you need to know how that looks on Istargam. You can use the "ask for. help" button if you can't log in. There are some fields to fill in. After you fill that you receive an automated reply. They inform you that you will receive one. And then you reply describing the situation. What happened next? in 50% cases nothing. Sometimes they would send me another message asking for more info (always the same text- either automated or a peron only chooses saved anwsers) or they send me a link to Instagram and Facebook support where you can only find info how to send them the e-mail again. You do not pay for verification. You can send them a photo of your ID with your face and date of birth on it. And this is it. But they never ask for it to verify if you are the owner. Probably there are no people working for Instagram support. Bots only

I don't understand why people don't use login verification when their account is so important to them. It's just like having a safe with all your valuables inside that can be opened with a paperclip.
I'm so sorry this happened to you! My 14 yr old daughter is also a photographer and her account has been copied many times. The thief uses an exact copy of her page, bio, everything. It's so frustrating for her because she has to get all her followers to report the copycat's page so it gets deleted. This has happened 4 times now in the last 2 years. So ridiculous. Stealing is wrong, people need to get better hobbies.
All the emails I get is @poppunkbecca(my user) see posts from..(ppl I follow) or @poppunkbecca you have 10 new followers and 20 likes or "Your account logged into "iPhone x" and if you click on it it has the IP address which depending if its an actual hacker it can be in the UK if they actually live in Korea
