A few days ago, the US government finally announced the second round of stimulus checks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As it turns out, the $900-billion economic relief package will most likely include $600 stimulus checks that will be received by most Americans. Needless to say, the news about the total of the stimulus check money left many folks disappointed, since it's half the amount people received in the spring.

The irony is that if the US hadn't been so negligent in building a proper welfare system, they wouldn't have to spend trillions of dollars now on useless stimulus checks that won't even cover the rent. They are handing out glasses of water to people that are drowning.

Hmmm...I am not sure what to think of this...here in Hungary, nobody got a single penny of financial help...so while I totally understand that $600 is not a huge amount over there, it's still something. At least one can put food on the table or this amount might cover the rent. I was taught not to complain about something you get for free.

No, $600 doesnt do anything. It is like working your ass off at work and the company gives you a $5 gift card when you know full well the CEO is Jeff Bezos. Now, I understand having to spread the wealth (so if the company wasn't rich the $5 gift cards being distributed amongst all employees is all that could be done, that's fine). but $600 for 10 months of this? Not asking to be millionaires, but fair compensation for our cost of living should be in order.

It took the IRS 9 months to send me the 1st one. They kept sending it to the wrong address. Multiple phone calls over 9 months finally got me someone who was a competent employee to send it to the right address. Now I have to wait another 9 months for $600? F**k this s**t.

Yes, because the GOP doesn't want to spend more than $1 trillion on financial support for the people who need it. Trump was talked out of demanding $2k stimulus checks by White House aides because otherwise the GOP, lead by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, would block all negotiations with the Democrats and no one would get any money. Republicans really do not care about people.

You really think a one-time $600 payout will stimulate the economy that much, at least outside of basic necessities like food and rent? And once this payout is filly spent then what? while many will may spend it almost immediately anyone with a modicum of brain will save it as much as they can.

If they want you to spend it somewhere other than rent or Amazon, then they should put a little effort into making it safe for you to leave your house. Did you know that the billionaires in America have seen their wealth rise from $3 trillion aggregate to $4 trillion during the pandemic? It's not free money. It's our money. Tax money belongs to the people of the country. Representatives are hired to decide how we spend our money in our best interest. Unfortunately the Senate majority would rather have corporate liability protection and bailouts for big business then doing things that would actually help real people while they scare their constituents with buzz words like socialism.

The people that are complaining about "socialism" are all silent now, because suddenly they find that "socialism" does have its merits. Until this is over of course, then "socialism" is bad and just an introduction to (dare I say the word) "COMMUNISM." And the GOP is happy to keep that myth alive to their gullible voters.

Just that Trump offered twice the amount before the election and the Dems would not pass his proposal out of spite. Now that Trump is gone, it's back to business as usual (i.e. peddling favours to corporate donors and military industrial complex) and as Pelosi said "That was not a mistake, it was a decision, and it has taken us to a place where we can do the right thing without other, shall we say, considerations in the legislation that we don't want."
