My husband and I both found ourselves with lots of time on our hands during quarantine. We made a lot of efforts to ensure that we didn’t spend all of our time Netflix and chill-ing, and I saw that many people were called upon by museums to recreate famous pieces of art. I thought it would be a fun way to occupy our time, but we had a hard time deciding what kind of artwork to emulate. However, we have tons of costumes from movies and TV shows―we’re both nerds who love to cosplay for cons, etc. So we decided to put those to use, starting with Spider-Man. If you have the threads, it’s pretty easy to look like Spider-Man. The rest sort of snowballed from there, finding inspiration from the content we love or simply whether or not we had the outfits that would work.

Lockdown during the pandemic gave us a unique opportunity to do whatever we wanted - within the confines of our homes - without having to worry about balancing our time with work. We were very fortunate in that way. So our creativity skyrocketed during that period of our lives.

Not only was I able to finish my first novel, but I started two others and began to make custom collectibles for our collection and others I sold on Etsy or gifted to people during the holidays. We had seen people coming up with all sorts of delightful ways of coping with isolation online and wanted simply to join in the fun.

The most exciting part of shooting these recreations was finding creative ways of reenacting something completely unattainable. For instance, how could we include C-3PO and a fleet of tie fighters? Our dog Ender and some printed cutouts, as it turned out. Or how could we show us staring into a hatch door with a lit torch? A box and a selfie stick, naturally. This one, our LOST recreation, is still my favorite.

She really looks like Ingrid Bergman! Though maybe being black and white helps.

The most challenging part of these photos, however, was lining up the shot. We just had us and a tripod. And neither of us is a photographer. So getting the angles to match was deceptively difficult.

Unfortunately, now with everything open and the pandemic labeled as “over”, our time has to be split once again with all those chores of survival. That leaves much less time for our favorite quarantine activity of recreating movie and TV stills. Hopefully, however, we still have a few in our future.
