I Followed Squirrels Daily With My Camera For 6 Years And Here Are 50 Of My Best Photos
I am a Dutch/Swedish international awarded photographer specializing in photographing red squirrels. My work has been published widely abroad in newspapers, books, calendars, radio and television, and magazines.
Six years ago, a fox was standing on my doorstep, and I immediately rushed back inside to fetch some meat. The fox would come back daily to get more food, and I used that as an opportunity to do some wildlife photography.
By the end of a second week, the wild animal would come to the balcony where it interacted with various props I used for photography. Soon, a Russian bird visited me and continued doing so daily. Suddenly, my balcony had become a wildlife photographers' studio filled with nature props, cameras, mirrors, etc. The bird followed me, and I followed the bird with my camera, as it searched for hidden food in scenes that I had created. Some photos of this encounter were awarded and published. Eventually, cute squirrels appeared, and they still come daily to my outside studio. Little did I know back then that the wildlife would become my living.
Since last year I have been organizing squirrel workshops at home. These workshops are organized to occur two times a year when the baby squirrels arrive. A maximum of 3 participants can join this 5-day workshop.

"Hello, huh, I would like to order a Big Mac and a large root beer. Can you hear me? Man, I hate this new drive-thru system."
all these pictures look like the squirrels are being paid. All perfectly shot. The poses are so dramatic
Thanks for the wonderful comments.

At a guess, the wood, nut and axe are all fixed together. If this is a regular feeding spot, you just have to wait until the squirrel turns up. Then take LOADS of photos and hope you get at least ONE good one. Patience. Lots of patience.
Load More Replies..."I'd rather use my teeth to open these nutshells. These tiny hammers were made in China."
I glued the axe in the nut and the nut I glued also
Load More Replies...This is amazing. Did he really break them in two? I love all the pictures. Thank you for Sharing with us.
You are darn good, but how did you get the squirrel to hold that tool ???
oh dear he looks like he's going over the speed limit. Better scurry away!
"Hello, is it the police? There is a man following me and taking pictures, please send help."
First squirrel: "Are you sure you know how to use it properly?" Second squirrel: "Of course I do, I watched all the seasons from Arrow and the Hunger Games movies".
Thank you so much for these! Squirrels are my favorite animal and these definitely made my day :)
So beautiful I love squirrels. My late partners name was CYRIL but my little grandson always called him Skirrl which became Squirrel... everyone called him Squirrel till the day he passed away. There are two squirrels engraved on his headstone 🐿💜🐿💜🐿
Ridiculously adorable! Squirrels are precious, and these pictures have made me love them even more! Thank you for giving us these. It couldn’t have been easy.
These are wonderful! So adorable they made my heart happy to look at them. I've always found squirrels to be charming little creatures and these photos prove they are.
I can't imagine this type of shot when looking for something specific like it grabbing the tiny letter out of the tiny mailbox. It's like "Wait for iiiiit, waaaaiiiit for iiiiiit............yes!". Must kill you every time the thing does indeed happen when you take your eye off the subject for just a second to check settings or adjust your position, haha.
I'm guessing there was something interesting/ smelly on the letter or in the mailbox- possibly peanut butter? Does that work on squirrels? even then, though, yes. Yes indeed.

Fantastic job! You can hardly see photos with so much care to nature today. And those must be 6 years making photos with pleasure. Regards!
Omgoodness they are so cute! Such wonderful and fun pictures. Thank you for sharing!!! By any chance, do you have these in calendars? I would be interested =)
Fantastic work sir. Can't even imagine how much effort each one of these would've taken! Would definitely love to see more of your work..
They are alive. Videos can be watched on youtube

Oh my word, what a lot of patience and ingenious ideas. I love every one.🐿🐿🐿
your pictures are mesmerizing, I could look at them all day......truly exceptional!!
Beautiful photos! You should make a calendar for people who love squirrels.
I love pictures of wild animals enjoying nature! Never tamed by Humans. They seem so happy!!!
Awesome pictures. I love to see wild animal enjoying nature, they seem so happy!!!
I love our little furry friends. This is all wonderful but as a fellow artist I'd love to know how you set up some of the more fantastical scenes. Are they so used to you that the two with you in the frame real or did you photoshop your in? In any case, loved them all!
Absolutely stunning. Thank you for making me smile this morning!
I cannot believe how gorgeous these squirrel pictures are, the photographer has a unique joy that shows in each&every photo. Loved all of them
These are adorable and fantastical! These creatures are majestic! But the title of this post is misleading, you did not "follow" these squirrels; which implies a more organic nature by which you captured these images. But that is also not the point of these photos. Maybe something like: I've been photographing squirrels for 6 years and here are some of the most fanciful images I've captured.
Some pictures are beautiful, some are funny, some are "When you go over the top with Photoshop."
Ummmmmm....what did I miss. These are almost all photoshopped. Whats the point.
Squirrels are cute in life. Great job photographing the cutest squirrels. You made us happy!
I rescued a baby grey squirrel that fell from his nest... I still have Scrat 4 years later.. They are absolutely sooo smart and adorable! Very misunderstood animals! You have done an amazing job and I absolutely Adore each and every one of these pictures! Thank you for sharing!I'm in Love with them ALL!💞
Haha. You're also stupid. Do you assume I live in a city far from any nature?. I jdon't. You world and your understanding of it is pretty small hey
If somebody ask me for a specialist in red squirrels I would highly recommend you Sir. Jokes out your work is pure magic, every picture took me to dwarfs and fairies time, thank you so much
These pictures are nothing but GREAT, especially the concept, use of flash fill, composition, backgrounds, colors and magic. I'm a fan!
I like the ones in their natural settings over the ones with human props in them. The items, like the umbrellas and the toys, just take away from the beauty of the squirrels themselves. It's just those ones seem faked or staged instead of natural.. Great Photos though!
Please, stop with the fake stuff. I would like to see genuine photos.
They are real photos. Mostly 1 photo and a time I used 2 of my photos together. Videos can be seen how these photos are taken on youtube

Load More Replies...Taming a fox and training it not to be afraid of people isn't doing that animal any favours. In fact, it's a good way to get the fox killed.
There's always gotta be that one person who knows better.
