In sad news for Marvel fans everywhere, it appears that one of the franchise's most recognizable characters – Spider-Man – may no longer be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Understandably, people are pretty upset at the news. Spider-Man has always been popular and we have become accustomed to seeing him alongside other Marvel legends like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch.
However, Spider-Man will now go solo again as he bids farewell to his fellow Avengers. To cope with the loss and express their disappointment, people are turning to memes, and they are as emotional as you might expect. We here at Bored Panda have collected a few of the funniest and most tragic examples which you can check out below, as well as some background to the story. Scroll down to check them out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments!

funny, cos sending a bomb into a civilian population is a great metaphor for what this announcement has done to the internet
So basically they just lent Spidey for exposure? How dare they do this to us!
The reasons why this happened are rooted in an extraordinarily complicated story over the rights to the web-slinging hero, with Sony eventually stepping in to 'buy' Spider-Man for a paltry $7 million from Marvel in 1999. Quite the bargain in hindsight, wasn't it?
It could've been even better, with cash-strapped Marvel offering the rights to nearly all their characters for $25 million. However, as told to the Wall Street Journal, the execs at Sony dismissed the deal by saying: “Nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters. Go back and do a deal for only Spider-Man.”
Sony has nothing to lose here... marvel had started to centre the mcu around Spiderman. Sony would just continue making spiderman movies and cross him over with venom and even Miles.
So Sony took only Spider-Man, and went on to make a pretty successful trilogy between 2002-2007. Thereafter things started to get a bit stale however, as subsequent attempts to reboot the franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man) were seen as relative flops.
This is where a partnership with a now resurgent, Disney-owned Marvel was discussed, with the two studios eventually reaching an agreement in 2015 to share the character.
Imagine Deadpool flirting with Aunt May and Spidey's furious about it. =-D
Spiderman, Deadpool and Venom is the combination that could save all 3 characters from drowning in ridicule.
I always think what would Stan want. It was his creation after all. He should be able to decide, instead of these moneymongers
Oohhh, now I'm going to be watching what happens next with all of this - just to see if I can detect any Stan Lee karmic payback!! <3
Load More Replies...Removing Spiderman is an insult to Stan Lee's legacy, He created Spiderman specifically to fit the 'Marvel style', you can read about it in his autobiography.
The decision was a hit with both critics and fans, a clever piece of business that benefited all parties and got people loving Spider-Man again.
Spider-Man has become a staple and popular member of the MCU, appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
However, the sharing agreement has now broken down, with Disney wanting to change the terms to reflect the massive popularity that Spider-Man has regained as part of their MCU.
Sony won't budge from the original deal however, which has outraged fans - some have been using the hashtag #BoycottSony, saying they won't watch future films by the studio because of the Spider-Man announcement.
spider man 3: home alone. we can't get any other characters in, so it's just peter setting up booby traps while aunt may's out of town.
Well Disney wanted 50% plus Sony has venom and spiderverse which did well in box office. I think Disney was greedy
They will easily make 800m which is better than what marvel was offering
So what next for Spider-Man? Well, Tom Holland is still contracted to Sony for at least one more film so there is definitely more to come.
They will go back to the Spider-Man only format we saw previously because Sony will be forbidden to reference any MCU characters they don't hold the rights to. Will the Sony-only films be as good as the recent hits we have become accustomed to? Only time will tell.
Omg how did all of them have a picture in the movie that is perfect for this meme. After the first Spider-Man’s body was found the next one just knew they weren’t going to last long. But Tom Holland has always been my favorite Spider-Man even before he was Spider-Man.
A TOOOTAL coincidence that he’s played by Tom Holland, I’m sure.

What is that sort of stick? Is it a sweet for spiders? It looks like a churro to me but I'm sure it isn't.
Yee, that's def one of Disney's churros, love those.
Load More Replies...No!! I love Tom Holland as Spidey, this is so unfair, its all about money what about the freaking fans
(Me hiking up the mountain after realizing Tom Holland is leaving the mcu) My mom: Where are we going and why are we going up here Me: *mumbling incoherently* a soul for a soul. *more panicked whispers*
*clutches chest with a gasp*. . . .my heart. . .it's. . .breaking.
*uses infinity gauntlet to thanos snap anyone who thought of ending the deal*
Why are people hating on sony? Disney is the one that is getting greedy for something they don't have rights to.
I think its because Sony's Spiderman movies haven't made nearly as much profit as the ones under Marvel/Disney. https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Spider-Man#tab=summary. Splitting the profits with Disney 50/50 would mean more money than retaining 100% of what they normally get. Seems like a bad business choice on Sony's part.
Load More Replies...if death opens that door he's gonna find a whole lot o fangirls and trust me they dont need any magical suits to kill anyone who DARES hurt Mr. Holland/Mr. Parker
For some reason, this just sounds right, but it's not in the right context - What is that quote from "The Incredibles"? "Money, money, money, we can't keep doing this." No Sony, you can't. But, also, Disney does the same thing. For corporations, it's all about money (feeding the machine) and for the majority of the people it's about money (not having enough and/or getting s**t on by the feeders of the machine).
everyone needs to stop yelling at the bullied. that's all disney is at this point. the bully
The government wouldn't allow this because disney would have a monopoly
So, you're saying sony spiderman movies but using pics from into the spiderverse, the best spiderman movie? the irony
People seem to forget that only "Into the spider-verse" has grossed less than 700 million. Spiderman 3 (which is the most hated and made fun off) made more money than Homecoming.
I know I'm going to get downvoted for this, but I actually want this to happen. But only if they can't get spiderman back another way.
I wish more people would see that it's not Sony's fault but Disney's for beeing greedy
I totally agree, and I'm saying this with deep sadness in my heart. Spiderman is Marvel, but Marvel is under Disney now. In a perfect comic nerd utopia, Marvel would not need Disney, they wouldn't have needed to sell their icons in the first place. But as things are now, we have to witness this paradox of legal rights in conflict with what's right. But Disney is so misbehaving, it's breaking my heart.
Load More Replies...Does it bother anybody else that Disney has a near total momopoly in entertainment?
Oh noooooooo, Disney doesn't get to own every goddamn thing, what a travesty this is (also Sony did spiderman better with spider verse dont fight me on this)
Spider verse was a practically perfect Spiderman movie. Personally I hate the whole successor to Tony Stark thing they were doing in Far from home.

Load More Replies...How this is a shock to anyone is beyond me. Disney is just trying to capture more and more content. In effort to not be ripped off, Sony said no the proposed "50/50" deal and suddenly Sony is the bad guy?? C'mon ! Disney is straight up throwing a fit for not owning yet another franchise and Sony did an awesome job with Into the Spiderverse. People just want a scapegoat.
And btw..the best way for this to be resolved in Sony's favor is if the actors that play the Avengers walked out on their contracts and films and refuse to resume any projects until Disney caves. Disney can try to reboot it with a whole new cast of characters, but I have a feeling that current Marvel fans will rebel against any reboot.
Guy's... I just realized. Iron Man owned Area 51. He most likely gave it to Peter. Sony owns Peter. The government owns Area 51. Sony owns the government and is using their technology to hypnotize people into thinking their Spiderman movies are better than Marvel's.
