Right. A little technological overkill. Most people have a microwave. So softening butter should not cost anything but a few moments of electricity.

all the naysayers missed the joke! in my house, we use tub butter, and usually let the container sit out for a few minutes before it's used. the rare times stick butter is used, we take it out up to half an hour before it's needed.

Not to mention how impractical it is. It will only melt a tiny bit, causing the same effect as a warm knife. Making the butter slide off the knive in stead of spreading it on your bread...

This is not true. Butter should only be stored outside the fridge if the temperature is below 70 f. Even then, you would need a well-sealed container to prevent it from possibly leaking on the counter. Unless you live in a very cool climate, keep it in the fridge.
