Colourised Pics Of Russia’s Female Snipers Who Terrorised Nazis, Including “Lady Death” With 309 Kills

In June 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union with the intent to conquer and enslave its people. In response, over 2000 Russian women enlisted as snipers in the Soviet army. Digital artist Olga Shirnina is now bringing history to life with vividly colourised photos.

The female sharpshooters who entered the brutal and sordid front lines of WWII became a terror to German soldiers. The most notorious of them all, however, was Lyudmila Pavlichenko – also known as Lady Death. She reportedly killed over 300 Nazis in less than a year of combat, and later went on to train younger snipers. “We mowed down Hitlerites like ripe grain,” she once said, undeniably also referring to her comrades who lodged extensive kill counts of their own.

The newly colourised photos are the work of Russian photo retoucher Olga Shirnina, who goes by the nickname Klimbim and also works as a German translator. Shirnina shows a clear captivation with Russian history, and has also colourised photos of Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin, and Nicholas II.

Russian sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, also known as Lady Death, reportedly killed over 300 Nazi soldiers in less than a year of combat

Roza Shanina, her comrade, killed a total of 59 Nazis at the tender age of 16, and was dubbed “the unseen terror of East Prussia”

These women, and over 2000 others, were snipers for the Russian army who enlisted after Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941

“We mowed down Hitlerites like ripe grain,” Pavlichenko once said of the terror the female sharpshooters inflicted on the invading armies

Lady Death later went on to train new snipers after facial wounds from shrapnel took her off of the front lines

Newly colourised photos by Russian digital artist Olga Shirnina make these historical accounts appear shockingly lifelike

Ziba Ganiyeva, of Azeri and Uzbek descent, joined the Russian army at the age of 18, and crossed the front line a total of 16 times

Yevgenia Makeeva, pictured here to the left of Lyudmila Pavlichenko, reportedly killed 68 Nazi German soldiers

Roza Shanina was mortally wounded in East Prussia in 1945 at the age of 20, and her well-kept war diary was later published

Nadezhda Kolesnikov and Lyuba Makarova fought on the Eastern Front during the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War era, from 1941 to 1945

Hi Alina! This is not an endorsement of Russia or any other political party. It is also not a comprehensive history of any of the subjects pictured, but is a brief window of context in reference to their time spent in the Russian military. We've amended several sections of the text to reflect our respect for the sensitivity of this issue Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts.

I think this articles intent is not to glorify war or any specific armies/nations. I'm certain it is meant to serve as an interesting factoid that hasn't gotten much coverage since these very young women bravely stepped up and excelled at what their national duty was, whatever that may be. I just wish that these women were around in russia now to fight the Chechnyan government that has now opened up the first concentration camps in the western world since Hitler did. They have a total of 5 now that are solely targeting gays and their allies. The leader has now come out saying that the entire gay population will be eliminated before the holiday of Ramadan begins at the end of May. These "prisoners" are being tortured daily and beaten to death. Some that make it out, due to family payoffs, leave only to be killed by family members as government encouraged "honour killings". Truly disgusting and going without mention by any mainstream media.

Oh my God. Please provide at least one link to the site, an article, wherever the information about which you are talking is located. Show on Google map at least one of the five concentration camps. Free your brain from lying, fraudulent news

These pictures are surely interesting, the accompanying text is a no-go though. There is nothing to glorify about World war two, in fact, there is nothing to glorify killing people – even if it are soliders who fought on the undoubtedly wrong side, they were still humans. Besides, it is a well-known fact that snipers were among the first to be killed and the innocent happyness shown in these propaganda pictures will not reflect the madness of war these women had to endure. Look at the text again..."wasn’t going to happen", "telling their stories", "notorious", "executed" "lightly wounded"...this is propaganda, even so many years after the war ended.

Why are people so overly sensitive and soft nowadays? This was a WAR, bloody, vicious, merciless war. Millions of people died, both civilians and soldiers, there was not a single family in the Soviet Union which did not lose at least 1 man or woman in this war (my family included). If someone invaded my country, I'd take a damn gun and fight to defend it, not preach about how uncivilized it is to kill someone when you're defending your land. Thank these brave women and men who did not let Nazis take over.

Thank you for this article ! My grandfather was in the Soviet ski troops and it is always heart warming to see America give kudos to the Soviet effort in this brutal war. 26 million Soviet people gave their lives for us to live in a free world. Please do not forget to honor the Soviet soldiers on May 9th.

These pictures are beautiful. Such a huge contrast of thought to see these young girls who very obviously are exactly the same as girls today (smiling and glowing and innocent) and then read of the horrors they lived through simply by being born into a time of war.

Why use the term TERRORIZE? I think they were participating in war as an act of defending their country against invading forces, which simply does not fit the definition of terrorism .

The West betrayed the Soviet Union. The West betrayed my people the litvaki of White Russia. They were almost all murdered thanks to the Vermin Petty bourgeoisie of the West. Liberalism and pacifism did not solve and will not solve the problems of capitalism. By and large Wehrmacht soldiers who did not overthrow capitalism especially those lawyers doctors and other Yuppie scum who often joined the SS deserved death. Save the criticism of the USSR and its leadership for after you've put your collaborators in camps or executed them like the comrades in East Germany did after 1945. Spare me the sanctimonious and hypocritical insults to the memories of the Red Army and my ancestors.

To Bored Panda. Even today Russians do not use term WWII, and do not acknowledge the fact that this war was started in 1939, short after Hitler and Stalin became an allies. Invasions, occupations, annexations: Finland, Poland, Western Ukraine (Galicia and Bukovina), Bessarabia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Bored Panda, what’s next? Are you going to advocate “a clear captivation with history”, by promoting Josef Stalin’s buddy Adolf Hitler?

WOW, that's not a bit rude. Just because someone is German does not mean they agreed with what SOMEONE ELSE did in the past. Look at what some Americans have done, or are doing! I believe you would call this stereotyping. Hans is correct in saying there is nothing glorious about war or taking a life. Our soldiers come home with nightmares and PTSD. They come home to a nation that turns their backs on them (army wife). There is nothing glorious about a veterans life either. I am proud of my husband, but most wars are politics flexing their muscles.
