So, the Original Poster (OP) says that she raised three children, and now, widowed, lives in her home with her daughter, who goes to college. And recently the population in the house has increased – one of the author’s sons and his wife moved in with them, in order to save money for their family budget.

The woman says that she doesn’t mind cooking for numerous household members (this is not her first time doing this – after all, she’s used to living in a large family), but lately she has become tormented by the eating habits of both her son and DIL. The thing is that the spouses not only love to eat – they eat a lot and, more importantly, very quickly.

Moreover, more than once or twice it has happened that the mom cooked some kind of food – it didn’t matter, spaghetti or cake – went to work, and when she returned, she and her daughter discovered that the relatives had either eaten everything clean or left them very little. By the way, this situation also infuriated the daughter as well.

The OP tried to solve this problem by increasing the volume of food she cooked, but her son and daughter-in-law accepted this challenge and coped with it quite successfully. Moreover, in order to cook more, it was necessary to buy more products – and the author’s wallet reacted to this quite painfully.

So the woman decided from now on to plate everyone’s food, and to label the leftovers, too, in order for everyone to have their fair part. The daughter took this idea literally with delight, but the son and daughter-in-law, on the contrary, were massively indignant and both got absolutely dramatic, calling the OP a huge jerk. So the woman decided to take it online seeking support from the netizens.

Well, this is indeed a fairly typical problem for young people who live under the same roof with their parents, and, according to official statistics, there are more such adult children in the United States for the first time since WWII. So all sorts of misunderstandings arise, like with these parents, who demanded that their adult son pay his share of the rent for the time he will be away.

But the situation in which one of the household members eats up all the food in the fridge without leaving it for other family members is no longer very fair (especially if the food is paid for and cooked by the one who ends up with none at all…), and one of the ways to oppose this is similar to what we described in this post of ours. Another was demonstrated by the daughter who decided to discourage her dad from stealing her food by adding citrus, to which he’s allergic (though she honestly warned him about this every time). But what do commenters think in this case?

And people in the comments are sincerely perplexed why the original poster didn’t make this decision earlier, believing such an attitude on the part of her son and his wife is simply a sign of huge disrespect. “If your son and his wife are disrespecting you and your daughter in your own home with their selfish behavior, you had no choice but to do something,” one of the commenters admitted.

Moreover, some commenters are pretty much sure it’s time for this mom to stop paying for food for her son and DIL altogether – it’s enough that she provides them with a free roof over their heads. “You have married adult children and you’re paying for their groceries?” another person added in the comments. “Sorry you should stop doing that too. If they are hungry they need to be buying their own groceries and cooking their own meals.”

Well, to me, these opinions sound quite logical and reasonable. All that remains is for the original poster to really withstand the pressure from her relatives and not give up.
