Have you ever encountered a pet with a “human” name? Perhaps even your own (!) name? Isn’t that just the best? I mean, you’re namesakes with this cute creature of pure bliss and happiness. If only you could swap places and sleep for 75% of the day instead of going back to your 9-5…

Turns out, though, sometimes people take offense to this! In this story, a parent clashed with a SIL, because auntie wanted to usurp their son’s hamster’s name – Amy – for her own soon-arriving daughter.

More info: Reddit

RELATED:

Sharing a name with a carefree pet is definitely cute for most people, but it turns out that some think it’s “embarrassing”, to say the least

A parent took it online to ask whether they’re a jerk for refusing to make their son rename his hamster “Amy”

Soon after they got the hamster and named it (after Sonic’s girlfriend), their SIL became pregnant and decided that her daughter’s middle name will be Amy

After considering the issue, the parent got back to the SIL, saying that they’ll stay firm on the name and she simply exploded

The parent caught flak from family, but their mom probably summed it up best – the whole thing is just childish

Sometimes parents are really particular about names. If you gave me a dollar for every time I heard about two parents dueling it out whose baby name will prevail, I’d probably have… like 10 bucks. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s just enough to get a soda and chips in today’s economy.

And trust me, with a name like Larsas (with apparently only 2 more people of the same name in Lithuania) I’m your trusted authority on unique names.

Which means that I’ve never encountered a pet with my name, at least so far. For me, it’s a source of infinite despair, but it’s a clashing point for others, or so it appears.

In the original poster’s (OP) story, their sister-in-law decided that her upcoming daughter’s middle name would be Amy. It’s set, the name is Amy, so that means that OP’s son’s hamster can’t be named that same. Obviously.

The parent and son duo wasn’t going to back down as easily, especially as the SIL pretty much demanded that the poor hamster’s name be changed. It doesn’t help that Amy is Sonic’s canonical self-appointed girlfriend so you just know that the name has special meaning.

So when OP came back to the SIL, it didn’t go down well. She allegedly “blew up”, saying that it’s “embarrassing” to have a hamster share a name with her daughter. I think she kind of has it backwards – it’s not the hamster sharing, the daughter will be.

It’s only natural, the hamster is the original here, it got the name first.

Image credits: Lo (not the actual photo)

The idea that sharing a name with a pet is embarrassing is also pretty shallow. I mean, are you gonna get upset about every single thing that shares your daughter’s name? What about them being Sonic’s girlfriend? Amy from Futurama? Where does it start and where does it stop?

Besides the admittedly childish argument, the poster came under quite a lot of fire for dropping this emotionally-charged decision on their child. Especially the implied “you upset her” comment.

How could an 11-year-old upset anyone by naming their pet one or another way? The only person upsetting anyone really is the SIL.

If the association to the hamster’s name is going to live rent-free in her head if the name isn’t changed, wouldn’t it already be forever tarnished by this whole thing?

It’s also really silly to think that (middle name) Amy may ask her mom someday “how did you choose this name?” and get a “we stole it from a hamster, honey” reply. Plus it’s only a middle name! The whole situation is just ridiculous, no matter how you spin it.

If you’re similarly having troubles picking a name for a family pet, you could refer to How To Do That’s guide. Some good suggestions are to take a vote or sit in a circle around the dog, calling out a name until the dog comes to a person, meaning that name wins!

Don’t take the guide to heart though, as it suggests taking three suggestions for names, Arya, Skye, and Melania, and mashing them up, getting Skarlanya.

That’s a name for some kind of demon prince or Frankensteinian monster, not a pet.

The poster’s story collected over 16 thousand upvotes in mere days, with a 96% ratio and nearly 9k comments to boot. The community judged the poster not to be a jerk, but many did say that burdening the kid with adult emotions was uncalled for and could have been done better.

What are your thoughts about the story? Make sure to share them, along with your pets’ names in the comments, “human” or no!

The community judged the poster not to be a jerk, but many said they should never have burdened their child with such an “adult” emotional decision

I’d be honored to hear ANYONE close to me named a pet after me (let some a child, lol) though I personally don’t think my name - Crystal - lends itself well to animals, unless it’s one of those well-coiffured smol dogs, or maybe a Persian cat. On a personal level, I’m not overly keen on “human” names for pets, but ffs, this was a KID and Sonic the Hedgehog’s gf is legit named Amy, so it’s totally okay. Adults naming their dog “Kevin” or “Dave” is a bit weirder, only because I can’t imagine yelling “DAVE! Stop humping that Weimaraner!” at the dog park, but that’s just me. XD

Ha! But that might have been helpful for me in HS. Small school we had 25 or so in a classroom. 4 of us had the same name. Our lockers were near each other too. Ashley. Overused in 86'. Sometimes I think I should get a rat and name him R. Butler.

You know, a friend of mine had a Rottweiler he adored named Kathy, decades before I met him. I’m downright proud and honored to have shared my name with a beloved pet like her. I bet someone out there right now has a hamster named Kathy, and I’m proud to share my name with that little fluffball too! In fact, here’s 100% blanket permission to name by of your pets Kathy that you want to! Doesn’t matter if they’re a dog, a hamster, a spider, a fish, I don’t care. Name them all Kathy. I will be proud to share my name with each and every one of them!

I disagree with those who say she shouldn't have brought it up with her son. I think he deserved to know, because SIL seems the type to make a snide comment down the line and try to embarrass or guilt him. good for him to know it could be coming instead of getting blind sided by his aunt suddenly acting nasty. but I wouldn't have pushed it like OP seemed to. "hey son, aunt wants to know if you want to change Amy's name to something else so she can give it to your cousin, what do you think about that?" and when he said no, that would be that. lol pregnant people can act crazy, that's for sure 😅

You don't put the onus on a child because an adult might randomly be nasty to them. You put a hard stop to the whole thing by setting a boundary with the adult. If they act like an a*s after that, then they've just shown the whole family how civil they are willing to be towards children and you can pull them aside and censure them right then and there. It's never on the kid to fix how an adult feels.

My husband had an affair, I divorced him. He then got her pregnant, and felt obligated to marry her. (30 years later, he's still regretting it ha!) She had the baby, and named her 'Shelby' . after her own dog. She named her daughter after her dog. She was a dipshit then, she's still a dipshit. And they deserve each other.

I had a pet rat who had the same name as one of my friends (by coincidence; I met the friend after naming the rat). When my friend found out she thought it was awesome! Later on I wrote a crime novel in which I *deliberately* named the psychopathic serial killer after my friend, and she thought it was THE BEST THING EVER. So yeah, she's now shared her name with a rat *and* a psycho who murders her victims by drugging them and encasing them in resin while still alive in order to make murder sculptures. I'd say a hamster is small potatoes by comparison. >:D Also this person is batpoop insane and shouldn't be taken the least bit seriously. I mean come on.

I once had a co worker tell me they placed a bet on a horse named Libby because we shared the name. The horse came 1st and they were happy, I was happy too, loved the whole idea. I kept an eye out for that horse but it was a regional country race where he and his family were holidaying and guess she retired before she hit any big races cos I never did track her. Also, Im not into betting so the buzz faded pretty quick. Anyhow SIL is an entitled psycho brat with no fun in her soul.

What I can't figure out is that Amy is going to be the kid's MIDDLE name. Most people aren't called by their middle name, so SIL's carry-on makes even less sense. I'm curious as to what the kid's first name is? I'm sure there will be a dog or cat around the neighbourhood somewhere with that name. LOL!

Fist give the hampster a a prefix, Original Amy. Second, tell the SIL if she doesn't cool it, hamster #2 will share her baby's first name. Also casually mention that you have this or that friend whose snake or other random pets shares the same name as your hampster. Really ruin the name for her, like wasn't Buttafuoco's side piece named Amy. Sorry but the child should have been told but not asked to change the name. That was gross.

NTA. Hamster's name remains Amy. Hamster will die, as all pets do, and then you can gently guide your child away from "family" names.

Everyone sucks. Her son will actually realize that yeah, this does affect him, when his uncle, aunt, and new cousin all avoid him and this turns into a big gaping chasm of A Thing which affects every family holiday. Honestly, she should have kept her trap shut when she realized they were naming their kid Amy (be real: how many of us would know the name of a nephew's hamster?) warned her kid not to bring it up, and flat out lied that the name was now different, and then everyone could have gotten on with their lives. Now the OP thinks her brother and SIL are ridiculous and that she's somehow damaged her kid by asking him to rename a hamster, they hate her right back, and it will stay that way regardless if they name the kid Amy or are forced to change it.

I wouldn't even have mentioned it to my son, I just would have laughed at SIL and told her to go f*ck herself. I'm just so incredibly tired of this moronic bullsh*t. NO ONE OWNS A NAME. Share it (with a hamster probably no one will ever know exists) or change it. Do you know how many "Amy's" probably live in your ZIP code alone? You're an idiot.

NTA and your mom is right - childish (on your SIL and brother’s part). The whole idea of wanting a child to change a pet’s name is ridiculous. Your initial joke about already having an Amy was reality and appropriate. The troubling part is that two people about to have responsibilities for a child can’t appreciate the joy of another child in their lives instantly saying “That’s Amy” for a pet he waited and worked so hard to get. I hope their hearts soften. It sounds like you did what you needed with your son. Dear Auntie or Uncle would have hit him with it at some time.

NTA. We see this type of post occasionally here on BP. I have decided that the imagined conflict between family members over pets that were named first and unborn babies is insane and unwarranted. There is a recurring theme these days (since 2017+-) of entitlement or exclusivity of people. I believe we are all special and individuals. I also believe we are all people and inside we are all the same. Don't we all just want to be happy, healthy and loved? AND, it's not even going to be the child's first name... No one can take a joke anymore...

My childhood dog was called Amy, it's a great name. And it was a great opportunity for the kid to see how a reasonable adult a) copes with an unreasonable adult and b) how a reasonable adult sorts out a misunderstanding with a child.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Granted, I was pissed at my SIL after she gave her daughter the name I had already choosen for my second daughter (but hers was born first, but she knew that I wanted to name my next daughter this specific name), but it never even crossed my mind to ask her to change her baby's name because of that. And in this case, it's about a hamster! He won't be around long (which is sad), but it's name shouldn't be an issue to begin with!

Does this mean that there can no longer be ANY animals named Amy ever? And what if they have more kids? Or what about any pets already named Amy? Does the Sonic "universe" now need to change Sonic's GF's name or they have to break up? I mean, where does this end? She's being ridiculous, and honestly, OP did more than I would! You should never have involved the child AT ALL. You and SIL are the adults in the situation and you should have handled it between you...after that if SHE tried to bring it t up with him you should have stepped in and put her in her place, THEN explained to him that she was being unreasonable. Everyone demanding your son accommodate her are refusing to acknowledge him as a person with feelings of his own equal in value to hers and need to be reminded of that. You failed to protect him from this, but you can continue to support him by putting a swift and definitive end to this idiocy by taking a hard stance on it and brooking no argument from anyone involved.

Sometimes people get very irrational while being pregnant. I have been pregnant myself. I'm not stereo typing or anything like that. But sometimes people really do get rational when hormones are not balanced. You just have to be careful in handling things with somebody going through this. It's it's Hard. What she said was absolutely ridiculous for your kid to change the hamsters name. It's a hamster not a dog. On top of amy is a middle name that she was going to use. So not a dog and not a first name. Personally, I think it's cool through the hamster and the little baby to share her name. The little girl probably think it's cool too. Just maybe she should just have a heart to heart with the sister in law and show her that the kids would think it's the coolest thing, Even though she is definitely not named after the hamster, Just cool that they share the same name.

SIL is TA for tellingly no you to force your child to rename his pet that he named prior to her finding out she and brother are expecting a girl. Quite frankly instead of trying to get your son to rename his pet you should have told SIL that she should change their expected daughter’s middle name as Amy was already taken before she knew she was having a girl! Also you should apologize to your son for trying to get him to change his pets name after he chose that name before knowing Aunt was having a girl and wanted that name🤬

If she can't deal with a hamster, let's see how she deals with Amy Starr, Amy Reid or Amy Anderssen (the ladies are cute, too but very unlike the hamster NSFW). Or if we want to go really, really dark, try Amy Fisher, Amy Bishop or Amy Archer-Gilligan.

Back in the day we would have called this either a tempest in a teapot or making a mountain out of a mole hill. That hamster has a life expectancy of 18 months to three years. Human beings live on average into their mid to late 70s. I am pretty sure that unborn child is NOT going to be scarred for life sharing a name with a rodent only expected to live for a few years. It's disgusting how petty this woman is. Just my opinion. "I'm laughing at the 'superior intelligence.." James T. Kirk (portrayed by William Shatner) Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan (1982).

My name is shared by a beautiful pitbull, even though it's a different spelling. It's currently a popular name in science fiction. When my friends named their dog the mother of the family was afraid I'd be offended. I told her only if they picked it because it fit a female dog.

This is so ridiculous it feels like it should be made up. She needs to change her baby's name then!! The kid chose "Amy" first and sorry she has no right to make him change it. I can't believe the mother would even ask that's pretty messed up. She essentially took her side initially by asking her son to partake in this ridiculous request. In his eyes especially.

XD

Just one advice when picking a name for a pet: Imagine yourself somewhere outside, calling for your dog, cat or horse. Which sounds will they recognize most easily? And in the pouring rain, what name will you find comfortable to yell for 10 minutes?

I've met a few people with the name "Amy". SIL can get over self. Nothing special about the name just to be an @$$ over a pet sharing the name that was around BEFORE the baby or knowing the gender. Thank goodness I was reasonable during my pregnancy. Good lord. SIL needs to grow up.

my friend has a mouse named chrissy and my name is christie. she even told me she named her mouse after me cuz im her best friend and ive done so much for her. do i mind sharing my name with a mouse? heck no! im honored shed name her little ball of floof after me. im even more honored that she thinks so highly of me shed name her pet mouse after me. her mouse is absolutely adorable too. it loves going into pockets. if u have a hoodie b careful wen leaving her house. i cant tell u how many times i had to turn around and walk back bc i found chrissy in my pocket. she likes hoods more so i tend to forget about the pockets lol. she also likes the sound of flip flops so if ur wearing flip flops she will chase after u. she also has a HUGE personality for a tiny mouse. my friend even managed to house train her and she understands wen u r talking to her. she will listen to every word u say then respond accordingly. chrissy is now 3 years old and the vet fully believes she will outlive the average lifespan of a mouse bc of how healthy she is

That hamster will live forever, rent free, in this woman's mind, regardless of whether or not she names this kid Amy. But I am already feeling VERY sorry for this little girl. Seems to me she has a "Karen" or at least a "Karen in Training" for a mom.

So, working from her mindset (apparently), she's NOT ok with her daughter having the same name as a pet in the family, but ok sharing with someone like Amy Fischer? Does this mean that there can no longer be ANY animals named Amy ever? And what if they have more kids? Or what about any pets already named Amy? Does the Sonic "universe" now need to change Sonic's GF's name or they have to break up? I mean, where does this end? She's being ridiculous, and honestly, OP did more than I would! I would have given it one pass to the kid and that would have been it. New moms/parents r starting to get as entitled as Brides these days!

So congrats all you Kevin's out there! You share a name with a trilobite. Not to be confused with a troglodite. That's different.

Tell SIL that you'll make your son change the name, but you know someone you hate at work with the same first name as what she wants to name her daughter so she has to change it. You cannot look at her daughter without feeling those negative emotions. If she gives an excuse, give her back that same excuse why your son shouldn't change the name.

I would totally name my kid after a hamster. I mean, Indiana Jones was named after the family dog.

My first cat shared a name with my dad's other daughter (I was 5 at the time, and the cat came before the sister). My stepmother apparently went off on my mom for allowing me to name her that. Mom had no contact with them that wasn't court enforced, so I'm curious how she was supposed to know that they wanted to name the daughter she didn't even know they were having that when even I didn't know. I just liked the name. Mom didn't tell be about this until well into my teenage years and after my precious girl was gone, but I'm still confused about the WHY of the situation.

I have cousins with the same name ...and it is also a popular dogs name. .. my own husband as a kid had a dog with the same name as me.
