The holiday season is the time of year when you, for better or worse, reconnect with your family. One young man, however, just experienced both ends of the spectrum. When Cydney Prescott was celebrating Christmas, he got to feel the resentment of his relatives and the absolute power of his mother’s love. Needless to say, the latter won.

You see, Cydney’s extended family held a ‘meeting’ to discuss his being gay. While it’s hard to even imagine what one could talk about in such a… gathering, his mom was having none of it. She interrupted the homophobic folks and cleared the room, letting everyone know that she won’t tolerate such insulting nonsense. Not one bit.

Cydney immediately told the internet what happened. In just a matter of days, his tweet has received nearly 300K likes and 3.4K comments, many of which were applauding his mom and her unconditional love. The man passed the good words to his hero, and she couldn’t be happier to hear about it as well!

Many LGBTQ individuals say that coming out to their family is one of the hardest things they had to do in their lives. However, disclosing your sexual orientation to family members is becoming increasingly common among sexual minority youth. According to one study, 79% of sexual minority youth had disclosed their sexual orientation to at least one parent, and two-thirds of youth had disclosed their orientation to at least one sibling and one extended family member.

And although being LGBTQ is becoming more acceptable in the Western world, some still can’t react positively to it. People may find it difficult to take on new information about someone because they don’t fully understand what it means to be LGBTQ. Johns Hopkins pediatricians and adolescent medicine specialists Renata Arrington Sanders and Errol Fields shared a few steps parents (and other relatives) can take to keep kids happy and healthy.

“Time and time again, we hear the same thing from patients: ‘Once my parents are behind me, I can handle anything else the world throws at me,'” Dr. Fields said. “You’re their anchor, and your acceptance is key. In fact, research shows that LGBTQ adolescents who are supported by their families grow up to be happier and healthier adults.”

But that doesn’t mean you have to be an expert in all LGBTQ things. “There’s no right or wrong way to express love,” Dr. Sanders added. “Just be present and be open.” Even when you’re not sure what to say, something simple like, “I’m here for you. I love you, and I will support you no matter what” can mean the world to any kid.

Of course, getting kids to open up can become quite a challenge. Dr. Sanders and Dr. Fields said the best way to do this is to build trust and start small. Be curious about their lives. This includes getting to know their friends and what they like to do. Think about asking them how their day went and if they learned anything interesting in school. Arm yourself with patience and don’t be discouraged.

Sometimes it’s OK to be stressed, confused or surprised. However, don’t give up. “Some parents feel so overwhelmed that they just throw up their hands and say, ‘I can’t do it.’’ It’s a lot for parents to process, but don’t leave your kid in the lurch,” urged Dr. Sanders.

“Remember, your child is having more difficulty with this than you are,” Dr. Fields said. Teaming up with a pediatrician, a counselor at school, close family members and even community organizations is a great way to keep at it.

I'm glad his mother had the guts to choose her son's happiness over considering the relatives' views. I've heard of parents telling their LGBTQ+ kids to accommodate older relatives. It tells them that what the relatives think is more important than their child's happiness. Kudos to parents who tell bigoted relatives, "You'll never talk to me ever again? Is that a promise, heheh?"

A meeting for...what? Discuss "conversion therapy"? It is so sad that for quite a few people love is not what matters most.

Indeed. I lost a younger brother because he thought protecting his rapist father to save the family rep was more important than supporting his sibling (me). Well, he lost out in the end, I think, and I'm probably better for it to be out of that one's picture. Him and his creepy wife.

My friend Dashon is the only person in his family to graduate from college, he and his husband own a business, and he's not religious but drives his grandma to church every Sunday and then the three of them have lunch together. His grandma stood up in the middle of a service and turned to walk out. The pastor called her out. She stood in the church and said, "You're having an affair, you live fat off our offerings, and yet you target my grandson. I'm through with your trash." Dashon said half the church followed her out.

As an African-American I have experienced more than a few battles within my collective - It is hard enough being a minority without having to fight for the right to exist as a gay man or lesbian woman. The super macho-manly stereotype of the Black man has emboldened some to hate all that speaks to the reality of simply being a black human being..Just as we tell racist whites, racism has no place in America, so too, must we say to ourselves - homophobia has no place in the black community.

The best coming-out story I've ever heard: A lesbian told a group of her relatives and one started to say, "But the Bible…" She shut them down: "You have the wrong idea: I'm giving you information, not asking your permission."

Great mum! A friend of mine has a daughter who is lesbian and she thought this was a personal insult to her when found out. She reacted in a very bad way and some ten years later she still does not truly understand why their relationship is not the best. Our job as parents is to support our children to become fully-fledged adults who know how to lead a good life, whatever that means to them. We do not own them, we all have to accept our children for what they are.

If I have a son or daughter when I'm older and they get made fun of because they're LGBTQIA I am going to get so mad and go off on whoever's bullying them about it. If it's my own family....yeah no...they're getting dropped. I'll protect my children as much as I can. Being a bisexual teenager I've dealt with homophobic males and their BS comments so I'd get what they were feeling.

Then there's my mom when she found out about my girlfriend. 'Well, I hope you got THAT out of your system!' Spoiler alert. I didn't. Haven't been brave enough to act on it since though. This is where I'm 'lucky', I guess, to be attracted to men as well. I'm in the middle of a divorce though so that didn't exactly work out either. I don’t think you know what a millennial is... the poor grammar caused eye twitching in me for sure, but I got their meaning. Poor language for the the sake of poor language bothers me. But this is not a millennial thing.. I just turned 30 which places me smack dab in the middle of the age group and I have often no idea what the slang is these days. This is generation Z that Generation X and Baby Boomers keep referring to as Millennials. I wish you guys would stop. I go on the social media faaaar less than any gen x or boomer I know and linguistically, I am the only one who bothers with proper grammar. So enough with the Millennial hate. I’ve seen soooo much negativity the few times I’ve been on Facebook nursing or cuddling my sleeping children with nothing else to do. So much fighting back and forth. It’s sad. 😕 What does generational conflict accomplish? Don’t even get me started on the political blanket statements.. sigh. Have a happy new year. Love and tolerance to everyone.
