Someone’s personality is formed by a lot of different things: their behavior, social attitudes, what they believe in and other things. It is influenced by our environment and how we react to it. Most often a personality is constant and we can even predict what a person would like or how they would react to an unknown thing because they follow a specific pattern.

Personality is a complex concept, however, some people tend to simplify it and choose one thing to base it on. It may become annoying, at least according to the experience of redditors who responded to Kandiblu’s question “What’s something that people turn into their whole personality?”

The thread became quite popular with over 58k people upvoting it and almost 44k of them joining in. These are some of the annoying personalities based on one thing that most people found very annoying. Do you agree with them? Which ones that you find unbearable weren’t in this list? Let us know in the comments!

Oooh, I hate this!!! My sister developed OCD at the ripe old age of nine, and it shattered our whole family’s world. I won’t give details, for her privacy, but the short version is that she was hospitalized for being su*cidal three times in the next ten years. She mostly has it under control now, and has told me some of the stuff that she was battling back then, that I wasn’t privy to. Not that she had to. She went from a happy, bubbly, normal 8-year-old girl to a shell shocked husk in less than a year. Perfectionism, even anxiety-induced perfectionism, is NOT OCD!!!! *Rant over*

My daughter was recently diagnosed w OCD. It's soul crushing bc I know she's had it for quite some time. We kept thinking it was anxiety her therapist and psychiatrist as well. It all makes sense now. She's exhausted from her brain constantly on attack. Her compulsion is non stop talking about how sad and miserable she is. She's lost every single friend. It's just me and her dad and her boyfriend but I think he's causing more pain than relief. We're fighting it head on trying everything we can. It's horrible watching my baby struggle this hard and not being able to fix it. The guilt is overwhelming at times. So glad to hear your sister is doing better that gives me some hope.

So true. Ocd or symptoms of it have only little to do with being organized. Needing to check the door even when you know you did it already or really _really_ wanting to touch handrails in a certain order before going down the steps - those are ocd symptoms and even then it doesn't mean you have the actual disorder. You neat freaks, don't steal words from other people.

The one I remember my brother doing was touching the back of dining chairs eight times every time he went past them and I (at the time 8 years old) couldn't understand why he couldn't 'snap out of it'. He never had any compulsions that involved organization- his room was a mess for example, and he never washed his hands obsessively either. People need educate themselves more before they give themselves a 'label' as it makes it harder for those with a diagnosis.

I DO have OCD (actually diagnosed, take medicine, doesn't work all the time) and OCD can be so messy! My bedroom is a mess, but if you move anything, I will flip. It's exactly where I need it. Whatever it is.

OCD should not be glamourized or glorified. Being neat and organized is different from having OCD. We once had a resident with OCD and the poor woman was so broken. She will keep calling her relatives up to 40 times in a day when her obsession would kick in that she needs to remind them to send her check. She always tells us she is so exhausted by her OCD but she cannot help it and she keeps apologizing for the things she did that she has no control of. For people with OCD it is not fun and they are not even proud of it. OCD drives them to the ground.

Doesn't seem like many people know the difference between OCD and OCPD (the latter having to do with needing everything neat and orderly as well as having control over things and situations) They are two very different disorders.

This! I have OCPD and I can't stand it when people tell me to "stop being so OCD". That's not my diagnosis, it's not a personality trait and those with OCD can't just stop their symptoms. OCPD is exhausting enough, I can't even imagine what it's like for someone with OCD.

I have OCD. Contamination and most naturally, "Symmetry". I don't give a damn f**k how messy things are, I need them to be symmetrical. Sometimes if there are guests at our house, and I arrange something, they'll be like "Oh wow your parents are so lucky to have a daughter like you! I don't do it unlike some people to gain appreciation. What some people don't understand that OCD doesn't always come alone. My mind is filled with violent (sometime se*ual )thoughts about the people I love most, and it's slowly killing me inside. OCD is dangerous, not something to be proud of.

This display is neither from OCD or keeping things organized. Don't act like just because they're in a row that this is organization. They aren't all turned the same way. Lol. I'm definitely compulsive about organization and how things look but OCD is about so much more. I don't have to touch doorknobs x amount of times, do things at the same time everyday, etc., etc.

I don't have OCD, but I also don't have a word for when I have to pick that piece of lint of someone's sweater, or else I won't be able to focus on what they're saying, or things like that. My brain stops working until I do that one thing, so I guess that's a compulsion?

I also hate this. as someone who suffered for years from hoarders OCD and irrational attachments, I had to switch schools due to the teasing and teachers being unable to deal with any type of neurodivergency. my room was full of junk, I would cry over everything, and it was just hell for me. I'm so glad I got medicine and therapy for it. every time something wasn't perfect, I felt physically sick. OCD is not a blessing or a quirky fun thing. OCD is an illness.

I have OCD and it’s hella annoying for me if I don’t do certain things I freak out and I have to quadruple check to see if I actually did it I also am quite airheaded and forget things I’ve done or said in the span of like 3 seconds. In turn I have constant anxiety about things and developed depression at the good old age of 11! If I don't think I closed my door this morning before leaving? I have a panic attack in the middle of the grocery store! If I don’t think I took my dog outside enough after like 15 times before I left? I’m running home to get him. This. Is. My. Life. Not everyone will have the same symptoms but for me I I don’t give a damn about being organized I just wanna be able to sleep.

I also get frustrated by this mischaracterization of OCD. OCD is an anxiety disorder that can be quite debilitating. OCD is in lay terms either: a) A compulsion that some activity MUST be done (and often involves repeated activity, such as hand washing or checking). The reasoning for the person with OCD is that something very bad will happen if these rituals aren't done. The other part of OCD is: b) Obsessions, which are repetitive thoughts about something (s) that are anxiety provoking. This is not a "crush" on someone in which you're thinking about something romantic. These are repetitive disturbing thoughts that won't go away. What I've just described is the lay clinical definitely of OCD. It's not being a neat freak or obsessing about some type of love interest. I have OCD. This is my life.

No kidding! Liking organisation doesn't make you lose sleep or peace of mind. It doesn't make your hands red raw from too many washings. It doesn't make people stare at you because you MUST do certain behaviours or rituals. Get over yourself.

If this person was a truly suffered from OCD, all the labels would be facing upwards, read from left to right...the chocolate bars would be in one bin together, either alphabetized and/or colour co-ordinated. This is NOT a true OCD. Just organized a bit

This is not OCD. OCD is checking the stove 45 times before leaving the house and not knowing for sure it's off. OCD is turning on and off the lights for a half hour so it clicks the right way and the bad things won't happen. Locking unlocking doors, washing hands until they're raw and not being able to clean up for fear of contamination. This is OCD.

There are people with ocd that aren't organised because most ocd patients want perfection and in order to get that perfection, they postpone which can cause disorderliness. For example, cleaning. So not all ocd patients are organised

As someone who does have officially diagnosed OCD with other friends who have it...we learn on each other for support. And we certainly aren't proud of it [our diagnosis]. OCD is just like it says: a disorder. It’s a glitch in the brain that causes a person to take some things to extremes, not just being hyper-organized. Examples: using a bar of soap to wash your hands, then throw it away and open a new one for the next wash because you just have to; flipping a light switch off, then on again, then off again just because you have to hear the click the switch makes.

I have OCD - contamination based, not ritual based. It makes me very particular in the control and safety of food and prickly as heck over food storage, to the extent that if we had access to a supermarket I wouldn't touch any food there as it would be stored in the same room as poisons. It bars me inside the town in summer as every route out is lined with poisonous wildflowers. It's controlling and terrifying, and nothing like this cutesy aesthetic that people put its name to.

I have OCD, I was diagnosed after I had my daughter and it got si bad that I couldn't have conversations with people because the intrusive thoughts got so bad. I had struggled with it since I was 16 and was too ashamed to seek help because I thought something was wrong with me. But when I finally did and got diagnosed I realized that OCD was totally different then what I thought it was. People who don't have it really have no idea what it is.

It really comes down to the reaction to *not* having things organized - and in that, also remembering not everyone with OCD has an organization obsession; crooked pictures and well organised objects are not the hallmark of OCD, intrusive thinking is. That's not even factoring in OCPD - which is trademarked by perfectionism - people who "lose their minds" or get ragey if things are not done a certain way or perfect are very likely displaying traits of OCPD (hallmarked by... the need to be in control, if memory serves me correctly), not OCD which is characterised primarily by a sense of impending doom or dread. An even better thought, is to leave the diagnosis' to professionals and not to flippantly brand someone as OCD because they like to be organized.

That's true, looking at the photo, you could be upset if they weren't organized and put together and feel better if they were sorted out. Someone with OCD wouldn't be able to live with the Snicker bars not being aligned and would probably be frantic if you ate one and therefore making one of the above an odd number. For example you can only eat one if you replace it immediately. Although cleanliness can become an obsession too, OCD is a mental illness.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a mental illness. It’s frightening, invasive, exhausting, and it can steal your very thoughts from you. It is not a cute personality quirk. Please consider that before you use “OCD” to describe yourself or someone else. Thank you. <3

I have OCD and I can assure you my room is a mess, however I panic trying to choose what I'll eat because I fear that if I choose the "wrong" option my friends will die, I spent months not being able to get out of bed because of how much fear I was feeling and because of all my obsessive and intrusive thoughts... oh also now I accept ocd and deal with it, its not who I am but it is a part of me, and I dont feel ashamed of it (you don't need to be ashamed of it as well, remember not to misunderstand the comments when people say that ocd is not something you should be proud of), however it hurts to hear people using OCD as it was just being perfectionist and stuff, it just diminishes all the pain people with ocd have to deal with

Thisss. I've had it since I was 7. I always hear people say they're OCD bc they're clean and organized. Um yeah try being a child that stays up til 3 am trying to get the water faucet to stop dripping, going through the house 45 times to check if all the light switches are off, people looking at you funny bc you have to step over the cracks correctly.

Years ago, a doctor asked me if I had ever been diagnosed with OCD because of a nervous habit I had. I said no, but it would explain a lot. So, I use OCD as an excuse when I behave compulsively. But I really don't have it.

I kind of get crazy about organization when I'm at my job. Like everything on my desk should stay how I like it and do not touch or move anything. Their is a certain order or routine that I like to follow. However, when I am at home, that organization flies out the window. Not that I'm a slob, but it's like my whole personality changes. Don't know if that's ocd or not but its not something that bothers me so I guess it doesn't matter...

I have OCD, was diagnosed after havung my daughter but I struggled with it since I was 16 and felt a lot of shame about it. I am so not organized. People who don't have it really have no idea what it is and how hard to deal with it can be at times. Having unwanted intrusive thoughts can cause a lot of anxiety.

While most people found these things they mentioned annoying and in some cases they even expressed fear seeing someone so obsessed about just one thing, the people who always bring up the same topic in every conversation might not be doing it on purpose.

Bored Panda reached out to Denise Marigold, an Associate Professor and Chair of Social Development Studies at the Renison University College in Waterloo, Canada to learn more about this.

35 Things People Embody So Deeply That Their Entire Personality Revolves Around It, As Shared In This Online Group I’m Norwegian. When I say that, a shocking amount of people assume that I’m American with Norwegian heritage. There are so many americans making their «viking heritage» their whole personality, butchering the norse faith and fighting with actual Norwegians over the correct way to make a traditional dish and the spelling and usage of «skål» (cheers).

It’s so f**king horrible to watch. It’s like being mocked.

I'm half Irish, and there's people I've spoke to that are in the US and found out they are maybe like.. one tenth Irish, but they make jokes like "haha us ginger leprechauns" .. I don't really mind, but please. You're American, not Irish. Same way that I wouldn't say I'm fully Irish or fully Romanian, I'm half and half, yes, but I'm British. Edit: I don't wanna say don't be proud of your heritages, I certainly am, I've been learning Romanian and Irish, make Irish and Romanian foods, etc. But I would never say I'm FROM those countries, just that my ancestors are.

35 Things People Embody So Deeply That Their Entire Personality Revolves Around It, As Shared In This Online Group Work. Some people just make it their whole life and I don't get it. Work to live, don't live to work. My workplace's normal business hours are 8:30 - 5:00, but I'm constantly hearing people say s**t like "when I was working on it this weekend" or talk about how they work so late, it makes me cringe.

She explained to us that it’s not unusual for people to focus their attention on one thing, like a goal or interest. The professor explains why it happens, “When you get absorbed in a goal, it can be like a flow state, where everything else can disappear while one becomes pleasantly engrossed in what they are doing.”

When you get into something with high concentration, “Other thoughts and feelings that are irrelevant to the topic get automatically inhibited. This can be adaptive because it facilitates goal progress and freedom from distractions and conflicts. When people do this well, they get a lot of enjoyment out of it.”

Depending on the level of absorption, this kind of state may be either beneficial to a person or interfere with their normal life. Dr. Denise Marigold reveals what positive and negative results it can bring, “Absorption in a goal or interest may also serve as a way to get relief from unwanted thoughts and feelings. If people are doing this to block out awareness of unwanted thoughts and feelings, they also tend to lack awareness of the effects their behavior has on others around them (e.g., how boring and lonely it can be for others to be around them when they have gone to their obsessive ‘happy place’).“

35 Things People Embody So Deeply That Their Entire Personality Revolves Around It, As Shared In This Online Group Some fans are kinda scary. Their whole life becomes dedication to a celebrity’s. And it’s not just their personality, they make everything around them about that person. Posters, music, merchandise, weird things bought on the internet—supposedly with relation to the subject of their obsession—and so on.

I can’t imagine being close to somebody before and after their transition into that life. It seems like it’d be scary…

I think the title should really say "obsessive fans". You can be a fan of a celebrity without being frightening. I am a fan of David Tennant. I've never met the man, but I do enjoy whatever I see him in, and it will influence whether or not I watch something if he is one of the stars.

35 Things People Embody So Deeply That Their Entire Personality Revolves Around It, As Shared In This Online Group Being sick/ sickly. I've always had very poor health, and in high school and early college, as my conditions worsened, I didn't like that I couldn't live a "normal" life, so I kind of leaned into it. Always joked about how sickly I was while secretly hating myself for not being able to "keep up" with my peers. Some maturing and some guidance from my mother has helped me to learn that, yes, poor health sucks, and yes, I can't always do the things that healthy people can, but that doesn't have to control my identity. Doing far better now, learning what my true limits are and how to work with them!

But it is your identity. Being chronically ill changes who you are. The person i was before being ill, her hobbies, her hopes and dreams, her aproach to life is dead. If you are 24/7 ill, feeling your pain and weakness it becomes part of you.

Some people might get annoyed that there is nothing else to talk about with that person because they will force the same topic on you. You will have to deal with that by assessing the situation and your relationship with that person.

Dr. Denise Marigold suggests that “In some relationships you might feel comfortable being completely honest and direct and saying something like ‘It’s nice that you are enthusiastic about that! Unfortunately it’s not something I can really get into. Because it’s hard for me to engage in that topic and feel connected with you, I find myself losing interest quickly.’ If you feel the need to be less direct, you can still aim to validate their interest while steering the conversation towards other topics you can both engage in.”

So if someone is really focused on a particular interest, it’s just their happy place and they feel comfortable and passionate talking about it. Also, if you get bored of talking about it or listening to it, there are nice ways to try and explain to the person without making them feel like they are a boring interlocutor.

35 Things People Embody So Deeply That Their Entire Personality Revolves Around It, As Shared In This Online Group HERBALIFE. having to literally explain to people that it’s an MLM is so frustrating. They prey on small towns, create “nutrition shops” that sell $9 shakes when it’s literally just Herbalife and is helping the owner barely break even.

Happened in my small town, then out of nowhere 3 other “branches” popped up in the revolving small towns. (Which basically means the owner conned 3 more into joining so that they can get their profit). There’s a documentary out there called like One in a Million or something that breaks down the pyramid and how little people at the bottom are actually making. They also show that the shakes are nothing more than liquid laxative, so of COURSE you’re losing weight.

Also, keto.
