50 Gross And Disturbing Pics Of Things And Places That Just Scream “A Smoker Used It”
Interview With ExpertIt’s estimated that about 1.3 billion people worldwide use tobacco products. That’s about 16.25% of the entire population that suffers from this addiction and risks developing many health issues, such as breathing problems, heart diseases, infections, dental problems, and even cancer.
Another effect of tobacco that non-smokers might not realize is that it builds up on surfaces like walls, furniture, clothes, and carpets and can remain there for many months. To raise awareness about the consequences of tobacco products, Bored Panda compiled a list showing what smoking does to public spaces, people’s homes, and possessions. Prepare to be shocked, and don’t forget to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, assistant professor of health policy and management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who kindly agreed to answer a few of our questions related to the effects of smoking.

The Ceiling Tiles In The Da Nang Airport Smoking Section vs. Non-Smoking Section
This looks like the smoking room at Qatar airport. When I walked in, I didn't feel like I needed a cigarette any more. It was disgusting.
So did you quit afterwards? Your lungs look worse than this…
Load More Replies...My parents smoked like crazy for years. Mom died from it. The stickiness of everything. Even inside computers, cabinets, etc. You touch it and the smell doesn't get off of you either. I refused to visit my mom if she smoked when I was there, but whenever I left the room. Sad how the smell now reminds me of my mom.
One of my mom's best friends died of lung cancer from smoking. Once it turned out to be incurable, she went back to smoking. She said it could only kill her once
Load More Replies...Can confirm. In the building I lived in late 90s, my manager was a chain smoker. He died, I became manager. Me and the building janitor cleaned his apartment. The colors you see in this photo are pretty close to the before and after of the inside of his apartment door (also walls) before and after cleaning with 409. I knew the door was dirty, but I honestly thought it was a tan door until I cleaned it and was shocked to find white paint underneath. He didn't die of lung cancer but his lungs must have been awful.
That is absolutely disgusting. I wish they would permanently ban indoor smoking sections and instead have smokers smoke outside away from the building.
And even if buildings have a sign that you must be 15 feet from the entrance, folks ignore that distance, plus, people still have to walk past them. Employees should be forced to smoke out back, where customers are not subjected to the irritation of the smoke.

I Think Someone Might Have Smoked Here
When I was a young person, I worked in a Burger King briefly. One day it was slow and the manager gave a couple of us the task of cleaning the office. I started wiping down a wall that had some stains on it and realized the office was not painted yellow, that it was all smoke residue. So gross.
I wonder how the stuff on the wall would have looked differently with all of that smoke residue.
All of those paintings covered in a film of brownish yellow filth.

All that smoke going into a nonsmokers apartment through air vents. Second hand smoke.
Depends on the country/ house. None of the houses I ever lived in had vents. So, no contamination from neighbours.
Load More Replies...Ugh, we have an apartment across from mine that has 2 smokers in it. They're also hoarders and barely leave the house, and in the 5 years I've lived here, I've NEVER seen an open window in their place. Their blinds are like this, and the poor guy who shares a wall w them had to smell their funk all the time.
Would cleaning the window remove this? It's like with the glasses (shown above), does washing them make a difference?
The window looks clean enough to see the filthy blinds. The brown color gradient is wow.
Load More Replies...The proper term to describe what is happening in these photos is thirdhand smoke. Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, assistant professor of health policy and management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, explains to Bored Panda, “Thirdhand smoke is the residue left over from cigarette smoking that sticks to indoor surfaces, even after the smoke is gone.
When someone smokes tobacco, even after they are done smoking and the smoke has cleared the room, chemicals and toxins from the smoke could become embedded in clothing or furniture, or could mix with dust and land on hard surfaces, like countertops.”
Cleaning A Chandelier From A Smoker’s Home. I Already Cleaned The Bottom Piece, And It Looks So Much Better
I experienced this. I thought the light cover was brown to look antique-ish but it was actually white. Also plastic, which came up when I was criticized because I could have broken the glass.

If it looks like that inside, there must be similar scenes inside the walls. In the air vents. Etc.
Indeed, "sealed up" is not "removed". What if you drill a hole in a wall or want to remove a wall or something?
Load More Replies...Dad seems to think he'll get a decent value on this house and complains I've ruined the cheap, unsealed floor in my room...but doesn't realize how much the smoke damage will reduce the price. Floor is particle board with wood appearance veneer, being unsealed means that any bit of moisture that's gotten in between the boards has expanded the particle board and wrecked the veneer. He once called it hardwood lol

“This is different from firsthand and secondhand smoke, which refers to the smoke itself that’s inhaled, either directly from a cigarette (firsthand smoke) or from being near someone smoking a cigarette (secondhand smoke),” Jamie further tells us.

The last change was about a year ago. The air coming through the vents made me want to gag. If you smoke in your car, I highly recommend checking the filter every few weeks. Never let it get this bad. Alternatively, don't smoke in your car, and this won't be an issue.

Seeing The Smoke Pattern On The Floor Coming From The Apartment
Even though people aren’t inhaling smoke directly or from being near it, thirdhand smoke still poses a threat to those around it. “Some of the chemicals found in third-hand smoke are known to cause cancer,” says Jamie.

Lordy, my fingers used to look like that. Smoked for 25 years and gave up 20 years ago. Best thing I ever did.

What It Looks Like To Wash 20 Years Of Nicotine Off Walls And Ceilings
I had to do this as a kid. Cleaning the house of an old man who passed for an estate sale. I literally had to throw buckets of water at the wall, then quickly mop it off the floor. It was the only way to get it clean
Is it weird that I think the pattern on the ceiling is pretty?
My husband and his sister had to clean their parent's house after their dad died. He said it was disgusting. The walls were filthy like this.
Did this at my great grandma's house. She was a heavy lifetime smoker. No matter what we did we could not get the walls clean. The sludge never ended. I'm pretty sure whoever bought the house had to tear the walls down to the studs and replace the drywall. Not to mention the carpet. Pretty sure that was not salvageable in any way.
Looks like surface tar too. You can get in there with harsher chemicals to pull even more out. TSP is quite dangerous and if any pandas ever use it, please take all precautions seriously, but know that it works.

Just imagine the inside of this person's lungs, throat and mouth!! I never had to deal with oral cancer, but throat and lung were rough going for everyone.
However, brief visits to smoker’s homes or public spaces where smoking is allowed shouldn’t cause a lot of worry. Researchers calculated the daily dose from inhaling or ingesting chemicals from thirdhand smoke, which comes to an insignificant amount if we divide it over the years, explains Dr. Hugo Destaillats.

The Inside Of A Smoker's Computer
I had to install a board in a computer that was similar to this and I actually developed a rash all over my hands and arms. So gross.
I visited my dad on a regular basis when he was alive. Every time I came I cleaned his screen and removed tons of nasty cigarette smoke. I kept telling him (somewhat jokingly) that if he quit smoking his lungs would get healthy and pink within a couple months. He would (jokingly) say "I don't need pink and healthy lungs!" He did eventually quit and only died years later from heart problems.

Now I'm wondering how many "amber colored" glasses I've seen at thrift and antique stores are actually just smoke covered!
Something that’s a bit more unsettling is the fact that the chemicals from thirdhand smoke can’t really be removed from homes or surfaces without renovations. “Good ventilation, hand washing, frequent laundering of clothes and soft furnishings, and thorough cleaning might help reduce some thirdhand smoke residues, but none can remove all the chemicals from third-hand smoke,” says Jamie. “To avoid potential harm from third-hand smoke, the most important thing is not to smoke indoors or in cars in the first place.”

Load More Replies...The best way to try and clean the residue off is by using an acidic cleaner. Walls should be repainted with two or three coats of paint, but only after being washed, as nicotine can still seep through the several coats. Things like carpets, wallpaper, curtains, and blinds should be replaced; there’s no hope for them. Ventilation ducts, filters for air conditioning, and heating systems also shouldn’t be overlooked in the cleaning process.

It is. If it was smoke, the ceiling would be absolutely filthy. My Dad was a smoker, and every year Mom repainted the entire interior of the house every year. It was the 70s so of course we had that horrible acoustic "cottage cheese" ceilings. Every year someone would come in, scrape the old cottage cheese ceiling stuff off, and spray new stuff on. Every year my Mom did this. No idea how she put up with it. I have severe asthma, from a very young age, and my Dad still smoked. To give him credit, he tried everything to quit, and finally managed it in 1986.

Yet, the ceiling and walls aren't yellow. We're just looking at another example of white plastic yellowing over time.
Who said that the comparison shot was done in the smoker's apt? And who said that the walls are pre- or post-cleaned? The plastic yellowing argument doesn't hold up here.

okay, I smoked for the majority of my life but I never understood how someone can smoke inside their own home. I already hated the awful smell of it on my clothes, why would I ever expose my bed or a couch where I sleep on to it? And the look of it is just as horrible as the smell.. just gross. I'm so glad I quit smoking two years ago and I hope (fingers crossed!) I will never go back.
Most of these are nicotine stains. But about 15 aren't. Some are vinyl colouring, paint, dirt, sweat, UV damage to plastic and paper, stains from fireplace smoke, deliberately applied wood stains, water damage to decking, degrading varnish, and stains from dirty water.
These people were not only heavy smokers, but additionally didn't clean almost at all. My grandpa smoked indoors, but was very clean person. When someone visited, he only smoked outside, but also aired and cleaned really well before. There was a faint cigarette smell, but not much staining at all.
Sadly I think in a lot of cases it gets this bad when people get older and less mobile. When your mobility starts to go, you still have the need to smoke, but less ability to go outside or keep on top of cleaning
