Woman Skips Her Mother’s 5th Wedding To Attend A Long-Awaited Job Interview, Gets Called A Jerk For Missing The Big Day

If you think that relationships with children are a hot topic only for those parents whose kids have not yet grown up, you are definitely mistaken. Even in adulthood, relationships with offspring need to be kept and maintained, if possible, by letting them understand that you love and respect them.

Especially if, in childhood, you were so passionate about yourself that the kids were often left to themselves. Such mistakes are not uncommon among parents who are raising a child from their first marriage while trying to create a new relationship for themselves. As a result, the kid may develop resentment, which later backfires on the parent.

A good example is the story of this 26-year-old British woman, whose post in the AITA Reddit community has already gained more than 7.5K upvotes and about 600 various comments. The story concerns the relationship of a woman and her mother, who, by the way, has not yet created a stable family for herself.

The original poster was extremely happy to finally get a job interview invitation

The original poster had been unable to find a job for several months so she was extremely happy when she finally received a job interview invitation at the popular ASDA supermarket chain. For the OP, this job meant financial stability and self-confidence, so it is not surprising that she attached great importance to the upcoming meeting.

The daughter also received an invitation from her mom to her wedding – actually her fifth

And so, when there were about two weeks left before the already scheduled interview, the woman received an invitation from her own mother to her wedding. Okay, let’s get right to the point – her fifth wedding. As the OP herself points out, over the span of her life, her mom has been in over 50 different relationships and only 5 lasted more than 2 months.

As a child, OP was distressed as she had many random men coming into her house frequently

Of course, as a child, it really distressed the OP that random men now and then appeared in her house, and the mother herself sometimes neglected the upbringing of her daughter. The father, as OP recalls, left them when his wife cheated on him with six guys, and the girl didn’t have contact with him until she was 18.

Finally, her mother was married four times and it’s probably not worth mentioning that all four ended in divorce. In other words, despite the fact that mom assured her that this time she’d certainly found the very proper man she plans to spend her whole life with, the daughter, for some reason, did not believe her too much.

The woman finally decided to skip her mom’s wedding for the job interview

On reflection, the OP decided that her own financial stability was still more important for her than another one of her mother’s love interests – and politely refused the invitation, saying that she would go to the pre-scheduled job interview. Of course, her mother was so upset – and all relatives from the maternal line also considered it necessary to express their disapproval of the “ungrateful” daughter.

However, as the woman admits, she nevertheless got the coveted job, and now she has enough money to rent a one-bedroom apartment and be financially independent in order to build and maintain her own life

People online not only tried their jokes out but also gave the OP several smart ideas

The commenters at first were mostly witty, saying it’s not a problem that the OP missed her mother’s fifth wedding as she might catch the sixth. In addition, it turned out that many people have faced similar problems in their own lives, and some of them did the same as the author of the original post.

There were also serious comments addressed to the OP in order to help her reconcile with her mother. For example, an idea to call mom, invite her and her husband to a joint dinner or even arrange a separate meeting on the occasion of their wedding anniversary. Assuming, of course, that OP’s mom’s marriage will last at least one year…

As always, feel free to comment on this situation and let us know what you would have done if you were the OP. Or perhaps you have some ideas of how she could improve her relationship with her mother. In any case, comments are not only welcome, but greatly appreciated.

So, mother only let her daughter know with two weeks notice, despite the fact she must have known the wedding was going to take place for two weeks prior to that, because legally mother has to give 29 days notice before the ceremony for the marriage to be legal? Mother has already made her priorities clear, and now, so has the daughter. Good for daughter.

Honestly...if it were my mom I would've stopped attending weddings after the 2nd one...and if she was lucky I would only attend the after party if she had an open bar.

OP already had the interview scheduled.... I'm sure she immediately told mom when it was. And then mom scheduled her wedding for that same day.... I think mom was consciously or unconsciously trying to sabotage OP's shot at independence.

OH, that's a definite possibility! I wonder how much notice the rest of the family got, hmmm? And now mom has the family going after the OP for ruining mom's "big day", so you know mom lied to them big time.

No, you don't get to expect people to attend anything after #2. If you've been married five times, barring a spouses untimely death, you are in love with the idea of being in love and having a party day dedicated to you, that's it. I'm convinced that some people are serial marriers because it's the only way that they can get a whole days worth of attention from people.

My mother does similar things. Before I cut her off, my technique was repeating the absurdity back to her multiple times. "I may have misunderstood, Mom. It sounds like you're asking me to skip a job interview that I'd already scheduled." "I understand you're getting married again, Mom, but are you really asking me to skip a job interview where I may end up [job title] for your fifth wedding?" Doesn't always work, but it's interesting sometimes.

I’m sure she’s used to dealing with the narcissism since she’s grown up with it her whole life. Most people who exist with a narcissist I learn to develop techniques to cope with them and their abuse. The flying monkeys are another story and they tend to pile on the abuse by proxy. This girl needs to learn to recognize how her family members are the tools of abuse by proxy from her mother. - https://abusewarrior.com/toxic-relationships/narcissistic-abuse/a-narcissists-flying-monkeys/

So this woman... 1.Cheated on her husband with 6 Men 2.Neglected her child for other Men 3.Gave all her attention to other Men instead of her own child 4.re-married 5 times And has the Audacity to get mad after her Child decise to skip the 5th wedding for the safety of her own future? This woman sounds like a selfish narcissist who should never have been a mother. What's worse is that her family is putting her in the wrong?! That's crazy! Especially considering how her mother gave her like 2 weeks. You put at least 1 month space in between the Wedding date and the invitation. If her mother really cared she would have understood that this was an important day for her daughter too. She did the right thing.

The divorce from this girls father was because he caught her Mom cheating SIX times... sixth marriage should be on the sixth of next year... Girl had her priorities absolutely in right order. At age 26th, not only does the daughter not need her mom's blessing for her own wedding, but neither does the mom need her child's blessing to marry. You let a parent/guest know the date, the rest is up to them to attend. Did not attend our son's wedding in California. He ended up with just 2 witnesses and the Minister. ( live in Mn). The other son gave a 23-day notice. he did ask if that date was open for us first. Mt guess would have been , that if he wanted us there, he'd plan another date. If not keep that date as his brother did 4 years earlier.

I really doubt they would have been willing to reschedule, unless it was for a specific position that OP met every single requirement for. Most companies will just go on to the next candidate. Some will reschedule, but then hire the next candidate before OP's rescheduled interview. Plus, with the mother's unbelievably narcissistic history, why would OP want to risk losing the opportunity of a good job? Seriously, a FIFTH wedding? That's a no from me for sure - I'm going to the job interview.

I have to wonder if this is real. I certainly believe she has a mother who would get mad because she didn't go to her fifth wedding. What is very hard to accept is that there are other relatives Mother dear has dragged through her other 50 prior relationships who took Mom's side. They know what she is like. How can they not be on the daughter's side? Come on. Is the whole family nuts?

A lot of groups (family, friends, workplaces) give in to one person who demands all the attention. It's called the broken stair. People step around them, accommodate, placate just to avoid being the target of their abuse. Also, the mom didn't appear in a vacuum. Her whole family could be pot stirring drama llamas.

AITA, if I don’t trust any AITA post, and always see the polarisation in them? Let’s take a topic people usually agree with, and now put some drama in, and see if they still agree if I add a little something that is important to others aswell. I feel apathetic after too many posts of similar design, and this mistrust has erased all empathy I might have shown/felt in the past.

OP didn't mention a reception, but I can't imagine she would want to be there at all. Honestly, if it were me, I wouldn't want to either. From the history OP gave, mom doesn't really care about her daughter at all, mom just wants all the attention on herself.
