Skin Tones: London Photographer Captures Portraits To Celebrate Diversity

I first got the idea to do a photography book in 2012. I wanted to do a project focusing on the beauty in different shades and photographing people from around the world. Coming from a family where everyone was a different shade, I have always found the variation in skin tones very interesting. However, I had only been doing photography for a very short time so I didn’t take the idea any further.

In August 2016, I unexpectedly lost my mum. This was completely devastating. It made me realize how precious life is and how important it is to chase your dreams while you are able to. This book is dedicated to the memory of my mother.

I chose the topic because I wanted to show that beauty comes in every shade and promote a message of being comfortable in your own skin. I also think this message is extremely relevant given the recent increase in xenophobic attitudes. We live in a world where it has become commonplace for world leaders to use hateful rhetoric to divide society.

About 50 people have been photographed for the book. Most of the models I have found through agencies, but a few I have scouted through social media or on public transport. I have shot models, dancers, waitresses, bankers, students and many other people. I have tried to capture as much diversity as possible in the book and ensure that all skin tones are included.
