One of the greatest things about being in a relationship is having someone who will always have your back. No matter if it’s a dire health situation, an argument with your annoying neighbor or financial troubles — healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and trust, so it only makes sense that the person you should trust with your own life is always there for you.

Of course, when it comes to family and your significant other — things can become rather complicated. As this 34-year-old woman with diagnosed diabetes writes in her story, she has a loving and understanding husband who’s been always there for her through thick and thin. But low blood sugar levels became the least of her concerns as her husband’s brother moved in with an expecting wife.

Having her own husband turn against her after the in-law’s all-craving missus demanded all snacks in the house to be shared — even those for critical emergencies — the author turned to the trusted ‘Am I The [Jerk]’ community to see what others would have done in her place.

Knowing that your significant other will always stand up for you no matter what is important

And sometimes the only way to find out how far they’re willing to go to have your back involves a pregnant sister-in-law

Those who have heard the expression ‘to be caught between a rock and a hard place’ (not to be confused with Aron Ralston’s best-selling autobiography that shares the same idiom for its title), likely have experienced it themselves. It fittingly captures the nerve-wracking nature of a situation where you are forced to choose between two equally unpleasant courses. ‘Should I take sides with my better half or my own flesh and blood?’

Interestingly, it won’t come as a surprise that most professionals recommend always standing up for your partner — doesn’t matter if it’s your own brother or dear mother on the receiving end. Or, as Matthew Fray, Thought Catalog‘s columnist, puts it: “Ranking anything ahead of your spouse is the most surefire way I know to create mistrust and instability in a marriage which often leads to divorce and almost always unhappiness for everyone involved.”

In order to dig deeper into this complicated ‘Who should come first?’ situation, Bored Panda has reached out to Dr. Shauna Springer, one of the leading authorities in the US on close relationships and the author of the best-selling ‘Beyond the Military’ book. Before tackling the big question, Shauna explains that there is more than one way to have your partner’s back. “First, you can commit to refraining from making statements that condemn your partner’s character or threaten the foundations of your commitment,” she explained. By this, she means saying anything that will come out as an ’empty threat’ will only “leave you with an insecure, hurting partner.”

People unanimously agreed that being pregnant gives the person no right to invade another’s personal belongings, even if it’s only a stash of snacks

The second way to make sure that your significant other feels like you always have their back is “becoming a student of their emotional reactions,” Springer says. As complicated as it might sound, Shauna reassures us that most of us do it every day. “Having your partner’s back means being attentive and responsive if it appears that you have unintentionally triggered something hurtful in your partner,” she told. “For example, you should always ask things like ‘Did your mood just shift?’ or ‘Did I do something that was hurtful to you just now?'”

The final advice Shauna gives us should come out naturally if you’re with the right person. “Openly tell your partner that you love them and when you’re speaking with your friends or relatives — always hold their worth high.” Sadly, she shares that more and more people choose to half-jokingly “post news of their partner’s flaws and failings” on social media, a ‘destructive behavior’ that’s taking over.

Sure, it’s the appeal of instant gratification. But Dr. Springer is right to liken this social problem to destructive behavior. Turns out, “high self-disclosure via posts is associated with a general tendency to neglect long-term risks,” as this paper claims. While it might not be a big deal to poke fun at your spouse on Instagram, we’re there with Shauna in believing the best way to maintain a healthy relationship is to speak highly of each other, not the other way around.

Finally, going back to the main question — ‘Who should come first?’ — Shauna points out that there are too many variables to apply the same solution to every situation or couple. “Should you have your partner’s back despite knowing that they’re in the wrong? It depends,” Springer explained. “What you think is “wrong” may be solely your own opinion.”

As she untangles this relationship conundrum further, the best approach to ‘escape’ from this awkward and uncomfortable situation means doing what humans have done for entire millenniums — simply talk. “Sometimes, having a thoughtful and open conversation with your partner about their thoughts may show you a new perspective. You might even change your mind once you have the full context for their views,” told Springer. In the end, she says, that’s “how we stay happily coupled.”

It's not just about the diabetes. She eats a food that's not hers without paying for it or replace it. Without the OP's health issues, SIL is still a thief.

Agreed. She needs to get her own or, even if you were trying to help them, get them some snacks she can eat but make it clear she can't touch yours for this medical reason. My best friend is type 1 diabetic and she keeps orange juice in the fridge always because it's a good source of a quick sugar. Her little brother used to constantly drink it mostly because he was just a 13-year-old and didn't want to listen and also because he didn't understand the gravity of it. After she repeatedly asked him not to, her parents got her a mini fridge for her room with a lock on it and made the brother pay for it with some of his birthday money to teach him a lesson. Its a shame you have to do that but if someone is just not capable of listening to a basic request, then -especially in this case as you are there helping them!- then either lock it up oor charge them. If they can't afford it then sucks for them. And your husband should be ashamed! He should be the first one to stand up for you.

It doesn't matter if OP has diabetes or not. Those are HER snacks and she can do whatever she wants with them. If her husband cares so much about letting BIL and SIL mooch off them, he can buy them snacks instead.

Can we stop treating pregnancy as a medical issue by default? Billions have been pregnant and billions of people will get pregnant after you. Unless actual health issues are making the pregnancy a high-risk one, there is literally no reason to act as if it's a life-altering disease. (It's also not a get-out-of-jail-for-free card for AH behaviour)

The bigger issue is that diabetes has become so common place, that people have a tendency to take it in stride, and relegate it to "no big deal". It is more common but it is also very serious, the ramifications and the damage that it does are very real. I'm diabetic and the issues I have had with people becoming offended or dismissive when I say I can't eat this or that is truly astonishing. My SIl tried to give me a piece of cake at a family birthday party, handed it to me on a dinner plate and it took up most of the plate, I took it and walked to the table to cut it much smaller and she's still pissy with me about it 10 years later. Honestly, either way it doesn't matter in this case, the food the pregnant lady is eating is not hers, she needs to learn some respect and boundaries!

I'm surprised that people won't consider health issues a priority. Cutting a cake smaller shouldn't trigger a decade-long grudge. Some people would have cheerfully said, "More cake for me, heh-heh!"

She or hubby or her brother can buy her her damn snacks. She doesn’t get a pass to just eat food that isn’t hers just because she’s pregnant. I’ve dated a diabetic, I’ve witnessed what can happen. This woman isn’t some snack addict, she actually NEEDS those snacks to be readily available.

Touch my mini calipos that I keep for my hypos and I’ll bust your hands myself. Diabetes is a SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION. There is so much stigma attached to it especially type 2. It’s not a lifestyle disease it’s genetic in most cases and dangerous if not managed properly. And drinking sugar water is really BAD. Your blood sugar spikes then drops. It’s balanced by moderation and a healthy diet

Hate it when pregnant women (and the people around them) use their condition to guilt trip others into complying with whatever they want. Recently I read about a pregnant woman going to the front of a large queue for people waiting to use a toilet and then getting angry when the person in front didn't allow to go. The person is front had a UTI or some other medical condition and needed to go as well. Same with seating in public transport. So many people have invisible health conditions and some are just tired after a long day of work. It's courteous to give your seat to the pregnant and elderly, but if a person is unable to, it should be a big thing and no one should feel entitled to it.

If your husband isn't worrying about your health he shouldn't be your husband. That's literally partners 101. I imagine this is just the tip of their issues and she has likely overlooked much other manipulation.

I'm a type one diabetic too and I feel a kinship with this woman . I have to keep candy and snacks and glucose rescue shots by my bed and in every room of the house. If my 5 year old kid understands that he needs to leave those alone because I told him I need them for my blood sugar. He often asks if I want a bitebif his snacks because of my blood sugar. If a 5 year old can grasp the concept and those 3 ADULTS can't then she needs to get out of that toxic relationship ASAP!

NTA. Your husband (hopefully soon to be ex-husband), as well as your BIL and SIL, are TAs. I really have little else to say because in my book, when you marry someone, they become your #1 priority over everyone else. If you can't accept that, you are NOT marriage material. Divorce your POS husband because he will NOT change.

This is absolutely intolerable & horrifying. Husband, his brother, & SIL need to be shown graphic color photos of what can happen to a diabetic who doesn't get their needed snacks, medicine, whatever. Ulcerous sores on the feet that can lead to amputation. Eye damage leading to blindness. Kidney damage leading to dialysis. Cardiovascular issues causing heart failure or strokes. Diabetes IS a life & death issue. OP needs to save herself & get a divorce, take the house & kick them all to the curb. And I really wish she would get help with her eating issues, a good nutritionist could work wonders for her.

I'm a bit confused here. Is this diabetic woman just chowing down on sugary snacks when she feels her blood sugar getting low? This isn't a great idea and in fact doesn't at all solve the problem. Why isn't she under medical care and on medicine? She states she "doesn't eat lunch or dinner properly". What does this mean? When you're a diabetic you HAVE to eat correctly and eating junk food is not one of them. All this does is tax your body further. She should go to a doctor, learn to take care of herself better (she doesn't say what type of diabetes she has...if she's overweight, it can be brought to very manageable areas losing that weight. ) She's in a very unhealthy loop and seems like she's blowing it off. Snacks are not medicine. Her husband is a jerk. I'm sad for people when "that thing" finally happens and you find out the hard way that your Loved Ones will eat you like a pack of wild dogs. I hope she gets the energy to get on a better track.

Can we stop for a moment and ask why this woman is not eating properly even though she knows her life literally depends on it? The SIL, BIL and husband are all TA for their behavior. However, she needs to get with her endocrinologist FAST to figure out why she is unable to maintain her sugar at proper levels and why she is not eating properly. Snacks are not the issue here. Poor diet and health are the real issue.

While I am still on OP's side here, the fact that she didn't tell SIL "Hey, I need these to keep from going into a diabetic coma, so please don't eat them" before moving them wasn't exactly being an adult about the situation.

I was wondering about that too, but from the sound of it, the SIL would probably laugh it off & still insist *she* needs the snacks more because she's pregnant, therefore "special". And I have to wonder about the OP's "issues with appetite". A diabetic really needs regular meals - if she would eat a proper lunch & dinner, she would not need to rely on late night snacks as much. Seems to be a lack of education & training going on.

Why is OP still married to this AH. He doesn't take her diabetes seriously. She could go into a diabetic coma from low blood sugar and die. And he doesn't see it as a big deal that she doesn't have food readily available to raise her blood sugar because her SIL ate her snacks. OP needs to kick her husband and the two freeloaders to the curb and file for divorce already.

I walk around with sugar packs in my bag and keep always something sweet on my night stand. The OP is a fool. Just buy more snacks SIL likes. Keep them in the kitchen just for SIL. Keeping her own so-called diabetic friendly snacks hidden away. It's called being an adult or a decent human being. This is not a hill to die on. BTW, OP is harming herself not eating regular meals and then eating sugary "snacks" aka junk food.

Why cant SIL buy her own snacks and have them in the kitchen? "so-called diabetic friendly snacks", you mean the sugar a diabetic needs when their sugar runs low to not, you know, die? She said that she has a problem with aptite and therefore get low bloodsugar more often. She doesn't eat her snacka for fun, she does it so she wont die. You know what an adult or decent human being does? She doesn't take what isnt hers, especially without asking.

Sounds like the husband has no clue about his wife's medical condition and how it works. I suggest that on the off chance he's just really thick she get her doctor to talk to him. If he refuses then it proves he just doesn't care and she should find a lawyer and get out of this toxic relationship.

Im type 2 diabetic who is staying with my MIL. I thank them every day for letting us stay, and try to buy food and other supplies as needed. I would NEVER ever expect them to supply my dietary needs, and since my MIL is Celiac diet is very important to both of us. How dare your SIL demand anything from you, and your husband is being an idiot. If HE wants them to have snacks he can buy them himself.

As someone who's suffering from low blood sugar levels I totally feel her. I don't have diabetes, but my sugar often drops to levels that cause me to lose consciousness. Not fun. I walk around with sugar packs in my bag and keep always something sweet on my night stand. It's not about craving - trust me, plain sugar can be so awful to eat sometimes - it's about making sure you're safe.
