If you've noticed your bar of Toblerone looking rather small and a far cry from how you remember it in your childhood, rest assured, you’re not the only one. In fact, consumers around the world are increasingly paying more for a growing range of products in ways that don’t show up on receipts.

Think of shrunk portions, thinner rolls, lighter bags, smaller cans — in this way, companies try to offset rising labor and materials costs without scaring us all off. But are they really succeeding? Also known as shrinkflation, the phenomenon has surely been noticed and well documented by people don’t find it fair to pay the same for a lesser net weight.

One such online destination, a subreddit called “Shrinkflation,” is dedicated to sharing some of the most deliberate and annoying examples of paying more for less spotted in practice. Below we wrapped up a collection of posts from there.

Shrinkflation is a form of retail camouflage in which consumers pay more for a growing range of products without actually realizing it. By shrinking usual product sizes and net weight, companies and businesses aim to cover rising labor and material costs without increasing the prices.

According to Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and lawyer who has authored a number of consumer protection laws, including the regulations under which the Massachusetts Lemon Law operates, consumers check the price every time they buy, but they don’t check the net weight. Dworsky has been tracking shrinkflation for more than 30 years, and he shares the results on his website Consumer World.

“When the price of raw materials, like coffee beans or paper pulp goes up, manufacturers are faced with a choice: Do we raise the price knowing consumers will see it and grumble about it? Or do we give them a little bit less and accomplish the same thing? Often it’s easier to do the latter,” Dworsky told The Washington Post.

That is actually fraud and worse yet they tampered with the scales which, depending on the jurisdiction, is a federal level crime. Report with documentation to the agency in charge of weights and measures. The local popo wouldn't give a damn.

That is actually highly illegal and, if in the US, should be reported to the weights and measures division of the government

That's just theft. If you live in the states you can report them to the weights and measurements department or whatever they are called in your area. Could be an honest mistake but probably not.

No, that's fraud. The supermarket needs to correct their scale and you should take this to a consumer protection agency such as the Better Business Bureau or FTC

M O'Connell

Considering the frequency with which supermarket scales are checked and the fact that this crummy kitchen scale isn't even able to be calibrated it is likely at fault here.

They probably set their scales off on purpose . So even if you're looking at it as they are weighing it, it's fraudulent.

Yeah.. that can't happen.. lol.. unless maybe a different country, but in Massachusetts, all scales are checked regularly, it's illegal for ANY market.. even BY ACCIDENT to do that. They even have to check the different tares, for different containers and wrappings. Either this is BS for views, or theft .. as Something stated.. or in a place that doesn't have strict laws.

I ONLY read b******t. It seems ur fish was gutted and cleaned to BE eaten properly right? The fish GOES into the scale like he comes from the docs. Any cleaning that people ask employes to do is obviously at the client cost, or just do ir urself at home. See ya sherlocks

No. They did not buy this at the docks. They bought it at a grocery store. When it was weighed it had already been cleaned and and cut it and ready to be cooked and then eaten. You are incorrect, Sherlock.

Considering this is butcher paper wrapped and not mass market wrapped I'd run an experiment by going back and buying 5 or 6 things and bringing them home to weigh/photo, leave them wrapped and go to a TV station with the evidence. Let them run with it and drop a hammer on the grocery store.

Does your market fry the risk for you? I worked in a chain store, and we would weigh the risk first. Print a label, then fry. The weight does go down after it's fried. Also, FYI, IF they are willing to bread it for you to get at home, weigh and price BEFORE they bread it for you!

Also, some (probably all) chicken comas with "water injected". They inject a salt water (saline solution) to keep the chicken "plump" while shipping. Then that adds to the weight of the package (so they can charge more).

I make handmade shower products for Etsy, and I'm always worried customers might do this. I always label 2-4 grams less than I make it. But soap dehydrates and shrinks as it ages, so even if I give it a month and a half to "cure" before labeling, it still might shrink more in a years time. I seriously have this anxiety every time I label stuff that's slightly smaller than normal because, hey, it's handmade and consistency is hard to nail.

Walmart does this. I discovered that I'm not only paying for the packaging on a family size package of chicken thighs, it's also injected with so much salt water (industry calls this "plumping solution") that once it's been cooked, a package that claimed over 5 pounds of chicken yielded just under 2.5 pounds. I understand that meat loses weight during the cooking process... but not that much.

At my fish shop, the price is for the whole fish ... even though what's in the package is typically the fish minus its head, fins and innards. We have dogs that we raw feed, so we get the stuff that's normally discarded wrapped up, too. The $0 "scraps" package's weight plus the non-scraps scraps package's weight add up to the weight marked on the non $0 package. Been this way for at least a decade.

As someone who worked at Sprouts, this person got two pre cut fillets. Those are for people who only want the fat middle part of the fish.(which is another story, but in one word:waste). It's much more cheaper to order the fish cut at that moment. Why wouldn't you want the fresher option? * I'll say in my experience* Sprouts calibrate their weights every week because (I forgot the name of the company) comes in to check those scales monthly. So this person's scale can actually be the culprit. I did read the reddit comments and he said he weighed water to prove that his scale was accurate. Which I think isn't the way to do that. That's volume. But at the same time...dude 2 oz? I bet hes known in the meat department to be "that guy". As in "Oh no. Here comes that guy again." 😂

Dworsky also argues that when small bags of candy have been downsized, you are not likely to eat two bags instead. "But for orange juice, cereal, paper towels, toilet paper, peanut butter, whatever — consumers just have to buy it more often."

Although products don’t shrink by half and the changes are usually barely noticeable, these little differences add up to your pocketbook. If you're getting 10% to 12% less of a product, that's equivalent to a 10% price increase, and if you’re a regular consumer of that product, you will start feeling the difference pretty soon.

On the other hand, we can try to see the positive side of shrinkflation and argue that we may indeed be saving some calories. In the context of the obesity pandemic, this may be a small but important step. When six-packs of bagels go from 24 oz to 22 to 20 oz, the chances are you will still be buying the same number of packages but end up eating a lesser amount of food.
